I recently bought a bike here and I had a great experience. The staff were very helpful in helping me choose a bike that fit my needs and fit my price range. I really appreciated the fact that they weren't pushy about buying a bike or upgrading. They made sure to fit the bike properly to ensure a good size and they offer a discount on any accessories the day you purchase the bike. This location doesn't have the biggest selection of bikes and there was some confusion when it came to picking up my bike and I had to call them a couple of times, but overall I was very happy with service and I love the bike that I got. My husband purchased a bike a week later and also had great service and they were prompt with getting the bike ready. As someone who doesn't know much about bikes, Penn cycle was informative without being pretentious. I would definitely recommend them for anyone looking to buy a bike. They have plenty of bike options whether your looking for kids bikes or hybrids. It's worth a look! read more

However, Erik's bike shop definitely has more options available with their Specialized, Bianchi, Raleigh, and Pure Fix brands offered there. The workers are friendly. David helped me and he is really good. However, I do feel like the service is much better at Erik's bike shop. I bought a Trek here and absolutely love it, but decided to upgrade my bike and I went over to Erik's and got a Specialized instead. Went and bought a nice bicycle seat. Had the stem and old seat with me. I asked the girl if it will be okay if they put the seat on the stem for me. She said no problem. Came back less than a minute later. Charge $12 for labor. It seriously took under 1 minute. You think something that simple they could just be a courtesy. I was really shocked. This is the original Penn that spawned the chain. It's located in an unassuming, almost house-like building and the sign is so small that I usually drive past it (yes, I am aware of the irony of driving to the bike store). This is not my usual neighborhood so I've only been there a couple times on my way to a friend's house. The same guy has been working every time I go in and despite obviously being a super bike nerd, he's still helpful and friendly to the non-pros. A lot of times you get this condescending record store-like attitude at bike shops but this guy goes out of his way to avoid that. I went in the other day to get some tires re-mounted and they did it right quick. Dude even put on the Packer game for me while I waited. Despite the bad rap that the chains get (and often deserve) I've had nothing but good experiences here. read more

I've had my bike serviced there before and they seemed to do an OK job but the customer service was lacking. There always is a long wait before anyone acknowledges you. A lot of the sales clerks are young arrogant skater boy types who really need to learn customer service. The place is small and there isn't a lot of selection. I went back in there again and the customer service was better - I think they have a fair amount of turnover given that most of the jobs there don't pay a lot. Pro: whenever I go into the store, someone always promptly says hello and asks if I have questions or need any help. Con: the first time I came in, a man told me the bike I wanted was $150 off and made a huge deal about what a unique sale and opportunity it was and that I shouldn't pass. I finally agreed. I probably spent an hour looking, testing the bikes and picking out accessories in the store. As he rings me up, he tells me it's not on sale, he read the wrong information. I was so bummed, I decided not to purchase anything yet. I call back a week later and tell them I do want to buy the bike. They said they would build the size I wanted, and to pick it up before they close. I come in to pick it up and they tell me they just sold it to someone else. I was devastated, and disappointed. read more

Love Penn Cycle! This was my neighborhood bike shop growing up. Would have my 10speed tuned up here every year, got my first mountain bike (my high school graduation gift) from here, and yesterday while in town visiting my mom, I brought my kids by to have the bikes their grandma got them, tires filled with air. My two year old, who's potty training, had to use the bathroom and a store employee noticed and kindly escorted us to the employee only bathroom that she could use. When we returned, my daughter's bike tires had been filled with air and the tire coming off the rim had been repaired, all for free. 25+ years and I continue to be pleased with the customer service provided at Penn Cycle! Fewer bikes to look at than other bike shops, and they didn't seem to care about customer service - at least the guy I talked with. I had to go get someone to help me because most of them were busy standing around. There was one salesperson who seemed to have a work ethic, but he was of course busy with other customers. It felt like a bait-and-switch when he brought me the much more expensive model of the bike I was asking for. My wife was also looking for a bike. She told him what she wanted while I was on a test ride, and he just stood there saying "yup" and "uh-huh" but didn't show her any bikes. read more

Had an awesome experience! We purchased a used starter bike for my 4-year-old son earlier this spring. After several months of riding the bike chain kept falling off. John and the mechanics immediately took in the bike and did a thorough inspection. Due to an accident either before or after we owned the bike it was determined that something was wrong and the bike couldn't be fixed. John and his staff offered to replace the bike for FREE! Within an hour we had a new used bike that was fully tuned up and my son was riding later that day. Penn Cycle really stood behind their product and went well beyond my expectations! I drove into the lot with one other car there which was leaving as I walked in the store. My interaction started good, I was greeted quickly but it soon went down hill. Mr no personality was...argh...just not a good experience. Too many other bike shops to spend money at to not have a good experience. I'm not sure what just happened but I'm extremely disappointed with the experience I just had. I road bike alot but I'm new to mountain biking so I started my research online and decided I wanted one of the trek Marlin models, since it said you could use it on and off trails. I walked in and said that very thing to the short haired gal behind the counter, except I had forgotten the name of the model. Rather than helping me, perhaps by suggesting some models, or saying anything actually, she just stared at me like I was speaking another language. she made me feel like a complete idiot. So, rather than stand there in silence, I said I would look it up on their website. Without another word from her, I akwardly walked back to the showroom to find the bike on my own, and she went back to staring at the computer behind the desk. Then I realized.. what am I doing here trying to find the bike I'd like to purchase with no help whatsoever, so I turned around and walked out. I looked at the lady from behind the counter as I was backing up, and not once did she look up from the computer as I left. I won't be stepping foot in your store again. It's a shame too because you're the closest bike dealer to my house. I'll travel twice as far to another shop that actually has customer service. What a joke! read more

I stopped by on Sunday Easter and the shop was closed. However, there was a store manager who saw me, opened the door and offer to fix my tire. He took me to the back side, showed me how to do it, fixed the flat for free and game me a free spare as he knew that the flat was caused by another employee not inflating the tire properly. My bottom bracket was almost toast and I was able to get the part and called around and most all of the bike shops around had a long wait time of two to three days. But when I called here they said bring it in and we can put in the part today! So I zipped over and a half hour later I was out the door with a new bottom bracket installed! Service is sliding. Went in looking for a bike, found a model I liked but they didn't have my size. Ok so they called a different store to check what the computer said they had, the other store was busy and said they'd call back in 5-10 min. I waited 15, no call. So I left and told the Penn ave staff to call me when they heard back. They said they'd call in about 20-30 min. Meanwhile I went to Erics Bikes, tried a Specialized that I liked, they similarlly checked a different store but got the answer and did the transaction in about 5 minutes. So I bought from Erics and will pick up the bike tomorrow (could have gotten it today). I have yet to get a call back from Penn cycle on that bike they were checking in inventory for me. read more

I'm a former Penn Cycle customer who has gradually switched to (and just spent $3,000 on a new bike and accessories at) Erik's. I used to be a Trek guy - which is why I went to Penn Cycle in the first place. But the people at Erik's are so much friendlier and more helpful, I even switched my bike brand allegiances and bought a Specialized Roubaix Elite at Erik's. In my numerous experiences with both stores, I find the workers at Penn Cycle to be disengaged and mostly disinterested in my business while the Erik's workers are very helpful and happy to see me. Wonderful customer service! We went to Penn Cycle after purchasing used bikes on CL. Robert, in service, was amazing! He was more than happy to tune up and get all the bikes ready and safe to ride. He didn't make me feel bad about getting used bikes. He just wanted to be sure we were all safe. He even used one of his own personal bike parts to make sure we had a brake that fit my daughters bike. Robert is the reason that Penn Cycle will be our go to bike shop. Ask for Robert. Against my better judgement I decided to give this place one more try to purchase my wife's bike. I didn't realize they closed at 6pm on Saturday but I quickly learned it. My wife and I walked in probably around 5:50. We scanned the bikes and we're ready to buy the one she wanted. Of the 3 associates and 1 manager standing at the front of the store nobody offered to help us. All of a sudden the lights began to turn off. I thought they were having electrical issues but no. They were closing! They literally shut the lights off on my wife and I. At that point we decided to leave. My wife went back in and spoke with the manager to inform him we were planning to buy a bike but nobody offered any service and on top of that they shut the lights off. He said he thought we were being helped and didn't realize. I still don't understand why that means you turn the lights off. Obviously this small business doesn't seem to care about the customer and making a sale. read more

Disappointing service. I brought my Specialized road bike there to have the front shifter adjusted, service tech recommended replacing both cables which I did. When I went to ride my bike that evening not only had the seat been raised a good 2 inches from my placement, the shifters worked worse than when I took it in. Upon calling to report this issue the service manager did not recommended a solution or offer to take a second look. Not going there for any of my bike needs. read more

My bike shop...After a summer riding (3000 miles) I took my bike in for a yearly tune up (2/6/17). They took it back to the shop, examined it and sent us home. No repair, parts, adjustments needed. Just moved to Minneapolis last summer and wanted to support a local business, so last fall, I brought my bike here for service. When we got it back, the handles were 2" shorter on each side and the chain clicked when switching gears. I rode it twice, hated it, but it was too low on my priority list with the move to deal with until spring. Brought it back last month and asked them to fix the chain and put the standard grips back on (I figured they put on the stubby ones thinking they were doing me a favor). The guy who helped us put my bike on a mount, shifted the gears, heard the click, and said that is how "mid-range" bikes are. I've had the Trek for 14 years, serviced it regularly, and never had the click before I brought it in to these guys, but it wasn't a hill I needed to die on so I let it go. I needed the standard grips back on, though. The ones they'd installed hurt because they weren't long enough for my hands. The guy tells me they never would have installed new grips without charging me. I agree that's strange, but yet, there are the new grips. We go back and forth, he essentially calls me a liar but says he'll put on standard sized grips, and I leave with a chain that clicks and new grips the same size as the old grips they replaced. The guy who helped me was mean and made me feel bad. Unless you like having to prove the equipment and condition of your bike (I recommend taking pics of each part), this isn't a place to go. I'm heading backwards to Erik's, who (in St. Cloud, at least) always did great work for cheap. read more
