Jon did a good deed by restoring and returning a bike I dropped off recently at St. Louis Park's clean-up day, where the City will dispose of your large unwanted goods. I gave them my 30-year-old Trek 730 that had fallen into a bad state of disrepair because I hadn't ridden in so long and hadn't maintained it. I had regrets afterward, because I had loved that bike, which fit me just right and had taken me many miles. I had thought it was probably too far gone to be repairable and figured it might have gone to the scrap heap. But I contacted the City of SLP, anyway, to ask. A few days later, their solid waste manager contacted me and said the bike was being reconditioned at Jonny Rock and that I could get in touch with them. This I did, and Jon contacted me when the work was done. There it was, my old bike, completely restored and ready to ride again. Three years ago I brought my bike in for a tune up, and I mentioned the front tire had a slow leak and I asked to have the lining replaced and/or the tire, whichever would take care of it. After I picked it up, I noticed I wasn't charged for it and a week later, the front tire was flat again. I never got around to bringing it back until last week, and just asked to replace the tires and front lining. When I picked up the bike I explained what happened last time and asked if there was a warranty so I wouldn't have the same issue again. The guy at the register said no, there wasn't. I said I understood if there was a puncture or something that I caused, but just for the tires themselves, even a limited warranty? No. I guess I didn't know that was a thing. I wasn't trying to be a jerk, but the guy acted like I was. I dropped it, paid for it, and then he made a personal comment, saying I should go find an Air Conditioner and sit in front of it. It was hot and I walked a half mile there in the sun and I sweat a bit, always have. I felt this comment was unnecessarily confrontational and completely unprofessional. This is a no-frills shop, which I personally love. I have a fancy knee scooter (Knee Rover is the brand) that I'm using to get around after a foot surgery. It has both front and rear steering, and dual rear disc brakes. The brakes got out of synchronization and the scooter became, well, pretty dang dangerous to use. I took it to Jonny Rocks and they made all the adjustments needed and I got the scooter back within 24 hours. read more

Awful customer service, owner was so inappropriate. Incorrect time and as well as price estimates given from salesperson. Communication gaps between employees, but by far the most appalling is the attitude and poor service from the owner himself. We will never go back. My boyfriend and I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to inquire about a front break repair my bike needed. The salesman/bike shop worker we spoke with seemed very knowledgeable, had great customer service skills and gave us a time and price estimate of 1 day and up to $30-40 for the brake job. He assured he would call me if they found anything else wrong with my bike and get my approval before fixing. We were thinking of going to a different shop for the repair but since they could get it done right away and price was decent, we decided to just go forward with getting it fixed there. Unfortunately the one day they quoted came and passed and no call from the shop. The second day was almost completely passed and I decided to call. They said they hadn't even started on my bike and "would be first one up in the morning" even though they were still open a bit and could have possibly done it that evening of the second day, they didn't. This was the first sign that things just weren't right. The next day which was the 3rd day, I called mid-day, the guy on the phone said they had not even started on it. I told him I was given a 1 day estimate and asked what was going on. He informed they were wrong to give me a one day estimate and said I would be up next, no apologies. A few hours later he called to tell me my bike was finally done. We were leaving town for a bike ride that weekend so I was glad they finally finished it just in time for our trip but it was too close to leaving for comfort and I wished they would've been more accurate in their estimate upfront or anywhere throughout the contact I had with them. Unfortunately the time estimate wasn't the only thing they did the bait and switch with. The guy told me my total on the phone and it was almost double what they had quoted me up front, and included work on my bike I did not ask for or authorize. Maybe this isn't a big deal if you trust the people at the shop working on your bike, but this was my first visit and I was clear that I did not want to fix everything or upgrade everything that may be needed, I just wanted the brakes done to function one more season before upgrading bikes. The most frustrating part was that the only reason we dropped my bike at Johnny Rock was that their time and price estimate was what we were looking for. As it turned out, they lied. It was 4 days, and double what they estimated. Had I known what they would truly take for time and charge me, I would have taken my business elsewhere up front. By far, the worst aspect of the entire experience was trying to converse with the owner about the discrepancies. He was a total jerk to me on the phone and to my boyfriend in person who went to pick up the bike. When I tried to explain how their shop's shitty estimates messed with our trip schedule and what we had planned to pay, he had ZERO interest in understanding, listening, empathizing, or validating what happened. He interrupted me before I could even get a chance to complain about the experience and ask for validation. He had an extremely rude demeanor almost right away and when I asked him to please listen he only became a bigger jerk and ran over me with his sentences and exclamations about their work being worth it and the tune up costing what it should. We spoke on the phone a few times and in the last call he hung up. My boyfriend who never typically takes issue with anyone for any reason, felt this shop owner was a real piece of work. He said he will never bring his bike there, he was sorry we brought mine there, that hopkins bike shop will get all our future business, and that he will spread the word to his friends and family who all bike as well. I think it is important to take the time to write the truth about shitty service as well as praise great service. We loved the first salesperson we dealt with in person, too bad the rest of the experience was as bogus as the owner's attitude. He forced us to pay the full price for the overcharge, offered no discount despite what happened and ultimately treated me like crap. I had a really positive experience with Jonny Rock Bikes. I was in a cycling accident (user error) and was unsure if my bike could be salvaged. I got my bike back exactly 1 week later and am really pleased with the way I was treated. Shop staff are super personable and nonjudgmental - volunteered to unload and then reload my bike from my car. I also think their pricing is very competitive. When I dropped my bike off, I was given a quote which turned out to be more or less accurate. I would have been an easy upsell for a couple of items I pointed out when I dropped my bike off, but was reassured that they still had life in them and didn't need to be replaced until later on. I was impressed with that. All in all - I will return for tuneups and parts as needed and will definitely recommend to others. read more

My child is learning to ride his first bike and I have attached the training wheels to help him learn to balance. I have adjusted them to be slightly off the ground so he can get used to the feeling of balancing. My issue: The wheels simply won't stay in place for longer than a single ride. I notice that as my daughter rides and the wheels take his weight they slide up and then he risks falling on that side. Listen. I don't know anything about bikes. But because of an impending move and loss of a car, I needed to purchase a bike as my main form of transportation. I went to Jonny Rock Bikes because it was literally two blocks from work. I'd been to three other bike shops and was less than impressed. I went in, stated that I knew nothing of bikes, and said I had limited funds. Dag. I was treated with such respect and was given such good information. I was treated so wonderfully and I purchased a bike perfect for my needs BECAUSE of my experience at this shop. The guys running the shop were very friendly in helping my girlfriend and I get our used bikes (from Craigslist) tuned up and ready to use, which they did for a decent price without doing a bunch of unnecessary upgrades. The proprietor allowed me to fill my tires and pointed out how I wasn't doing it correctly which was nice - however he blew his chance at building rapport by inquiring about how much I paid for my bike, where I got it, and indirectly stated that I could've gotten the same quality item at a lower price from him. Later, via email, he declined to work with me on price for a pump which retails online for $45 (he sells them for $60 in his shop), and gave a sob story about how amazon kills price margins for small business (which incidentally may be true, but not the point). We often bike along the nearby trail, and we had stopped a few times to buy small accesories. It was fine. But recently my wife had a flat and she stopped by to have it fixed. They refused to patch, insisting on selling anew tube: this is par fore the course. But the bad part is that they insisted in selling her a whole new tire, even though the one she had on that wheel was in perfect condition. They insited 'it had holes in it'. Smelling a rat she insisted in taking the old tire home, where she and I double checked that it was indeed in perfect condition. read more

On my first biking outing of the season, I started out on the nearby trail, only to realize rear brakes not working. I was near the shop, so went in. They quickly assessed the problem, gave me a price to fix it, and I was on my way in less than 15 minutes. Really nice, very reasonable service. My friends bought a bike there for a grandchild, and felt JR really went out of their way to provide a good, inexpensive bike. I was very grateful for the quick repair work. read more

Avoid at all cost, do not shop here. I wanted to trade some bike parts and tires for a chainring and some bolts. Maybe a single speed crankset. Not only was the owner rude. He told me he didn't buy low end junk like the stuff that I had. The stuff that came off a $499 diamond back. When I then asked him if he had a 36 tooth chinring, he pulled out a box off dirty and rusty rings. I then told him that they would not be my go to lbs, and they had the worst customer service I have ever encountered. He then said I don't buy sh@t like the stuff you brought. Mind you I was looking to trade, which they told me they do but I found out only on high end parts. Mind you they sell low end bikes that they take on donation, fix them and then charge way to much for. Don't shop here read more

I wanted a steel road bike for commuting downtown. I ended up picking up a new build of a Handsom Devil from Jonny Rock Bikes and I absolutely LOVE it. They did a great job on the build - drop bars, cyclocross tires, comfortable gearing, etc. I've had it in for a tuneup once which they did a great job on too. I recently had my Trek Madone/Ultegra road bike serviced and tuned at Jonny Rocks Bikes. This was my first time there and this was without a doubt the best tune I ever got. The bike is about five years old and I have previously tried all the other big name local bike shops but Jonny Rocks has by far been the best.
