We stopped for a quick family dinner on a Saturday afternoon. We didn't have reservations but they had one table they said was available. There were several empty tables but I suppose they don't seat walkins within a certain amount of time of a reservation. The waitress was pleasant. She took our order and the food came out rather quickly. The appetizers were good. The beer cheese and pretzel were good. The pretzel had an odd texture. More bready than most pretzels. The spinach artichoke dip was good. Everyone at the table enjoyed their sandwiches. I had the fried cod. It was good. The only criticism is that with the tomato placed on the fish, part of the shell got rather soggy. Still tasty. The chicken panini was a hit. The crab cake sandwich was a hit as well. We had an enjoyable date night at Penn's Tavern. They have a nice assortment of cocktails. The Margarita was average. I ordered the Parmesan crusted chicken. It was delicious. We've tried Penn's Tavern three times. The atmosphere was okay (we sat inside). There was only one other table seated so I don't understand why the service has been so consistently very slow. Caesar salad was nice. Crab cake sandwich that was excellent last time tasted less palatable this visit. We didn't expect the BBQ pork to have the heat that it did, and that wasn't a 'plus'. One of our family left about two-thirds of the BBQ on his plate, and even when commented on, server said only "yeah they put some spice in it." We won't visit again. Sorry! read more

Historic old tavern dating back to 1703. Came last Saturday with friends before 5pm. The restaurant was empty. We asked for a table in the back patio. The woman seating people informed us we needed a reservation. She was on a power trip. We looked out back and there were plenty of tables. We asked another woman at the desk and said we would be quick to eat and drink. She said no she was bitchy and high on her "position" THERE WERE AT LEAST SIX TABLES AVAILABLE ON THE PATIO. This is not hospitable or welcoming. Women seating people need to be fired. Who turns people away like that? You are turning money away. Then I kid you not, what looked like possibly a male manager or someone from the back came out holding a phone that was ringing incessantly, asking the girls working there, who wanted to take the phone call while they all said, not me not me laughing all the while the phone was ringing. Good luck getting a reservation with those employees! Drinks were good. Crab cake sandwich tasted like a can and wasn't good at all. Spinach dip was excellent and flavourful. Fish reuben was just ok. The building and setting are the best part. We walked to the back to check out the river. THE PATIO WAS FULL OF EMPTY TABLES. You can be "friendly" but those women seating people need lessons in how to be hospitable. read more

Absolutely amazing! A quant and rustic building off the side of the road along the Susquehanna River. Almost could miss it from the drive, but something you definitely must not miss! Loved the decor of this 1700s building, the history of the building and then there's the amazing staff and unbelievable food! Must try the beer cheese fries app, and then get anything else...the 6 of us stopped for a unreserved lunch and all had something different, and no one had any complaints! Minorcan Mike's Chicken - phenomenal, the Surf & Turf burger kept my son quiet for about 5 mins as he barely stopped eating to take a breath, the shrimp tacos had nice serving of shrimp and was delicious, the Prime Rib Press was to die for, the Cuban was spot on. All came with local grown potatoes cut for everyone's fries. Cannot beat them! Then the staff, we were quickly greeted and seated in an area of our choice. Drinks immediately and food there after. Very refreshing to have this great of an experience for a 1st time stop...and we will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu! read more

First of all, this restaurant is beautiful! Its history is impressive, and there's even a ghost story or two to be told if you're so inclined! The service Saturday night, even though they were extremely busy, was prompt, pleasant, accurate, and helpful. The food was delicious, our party of six had fish tacos, shrimp tacos, chicken, and also salmon dinners, we all loved them! Oh, and they also offer numerous cocktails, and beer options. I called the night if and asked to be seated by the fireplace. We went to one of the Christmas markets and were now trying to find a cozy atmosphere. They said that they couldn't be sure that they could accommodate us in that room. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to fins that they provided us the table directly in front the fireplace. The setting was so what we needed. One of the staff members even offered to show me around. Opened up with an old fashioned. Food was what was to be expected at a tavern. I thought that it was pretty damn good. We ordered the fish and chips, the salmon, and the chicken sandwich. All of which hit the spot. Our server was the absolute sweetest. When I arrived I was told the German menu is only available on Thursdays, (it was Sunday) then when I ordered from the menu, I was told that that side of menu is for evening dining (it was 12:30). How about using a menu just for your specific times and days and not give a full menu then tell customers it's not available? Waiter wasn't attentive, and the food was not up to par. This is a lovely old tavern from 1710 right on the river - beautiful views and excellent food, with super service. Fish tacos and Shrimp Po'boy both delish. Lots of great beers on tap! They have seating inside, on the spacious deck or on the lawn. read more

Excellent food and atmosphere. We had German food on Thursday and returned today for Country fried steak (CFS). We are from Texas and the CFS was one of the best I have ever eaten. For the German Food-we had weiner schnitzel, cabbage and German potato salad and it was all amazing. I am not a German food aficionado but I would definitely recommend. As for the atmosphere- today we sat inside and enjoyed historical ambiance and fireplace. Whereas the last two visits (both for the German food menu), we were able to sit on the patio and enjoy the beautiful view of the Susquehanna River. This restaurant feels like it might be the setting for one of the tavern scenes in Game of Thrones with its decor and stone facade. It is a beautiful historic stone house which has been converted into an amazing restaurant and is right on the banks of the Susquehanna River. Since I came out at night in the dead of a Pennsylvania winter the outdoor area wasn't available and I didn't get to view the river. I have to come back during the summer during the day to give that experience a try. We came after work at 6 pm on a Saturday night and luckily we had called ahead because the restaurant was full but the hostess saved us two spots at the bar. The waitress was amazing no nonesense and a joy. Completely honest and a little bossy but all in fun. The staff was extremely friendly and personable and some of them came over to chat with my colleague who had been before and had apparently made such an impression that they remembered her. My friend and I shared the hog wings with sriracha ranch, bacon and beer cheese fries. Those two items alone would have been enough for an entire meal but we still went ahead and ordered entrees. I had the prime rib accompanied by Brussels sprouts while my friend had the French Dip prime rib sandwich. The food was delicious and very flavorful. It tasted even better because we ordered the river room sangria to wash it all down. Drink and food portions were all extremely generous. I definitely plan on visiting again to try this place in the summer and to get some hog wings. Be sure to call ahead during the week if you plan to eat here on a Friday or Saturday night since this place is extremely popular and rightfully so. read more

Ok, went back and had the surf and turf burger. Just take it off the menu. It was absolutely horrible. Burger was very small, hard, dry and completely bland. We were at a kinda nearby soccer game and this place sounded good. It is on the water. I guess it is in a really old structure. The layout is a little weird. We sat at the bar. It looks like they have a decent selection of beer and alcohol. They have four German entrees. I got Sarah's sliced steak. It was pretty good! It had some kind of pineapple dressing on it. My wife got a burger. She ordered it well done but it came out medium RAW. The bartender was nice and got her a new one. That was ready just as I was finishing. The fries were fine. There were a couple of dessert options. I did like my food but between the cost and my wife's burger for this visit I can only give three stars and don't think I would go out of my way (which is the only way to go there) to go there. read more

FOLKS you are missing out! 1st off super historic & old building that does NOT make you all creeped out or feel unsafe or all dusty! 2nd its locally owned by a man whose family has been in the area for generations - support your local restaurant owners! The hostess, his wife who we shall call "Lady Seminole" , was very friendly and forthcoming with information on the property - you could sense her passion for the business! Food was good. all 3 had sandwiches (as lunch choices are Apps and Sandwiches and salads) I would recommend each day trying to have 1 main entree type dish as a special. Sandwiches were good. I had the Cuban and although it wouldn't pass muster in Tampatown - it was very unique and tasty for up north chow! But - the thing that SOLD ME on the food was the FRENCH FRIES. Y'all, these may be the best fries I have ever had. Gordon Ramsey would be proud! Can't wait to go back for DINNER!!! read more

This is one of those hard to rate kind of places. The ambiance both indoors or out is amazing. If you are into craft beers they have a nice selection, not amazing but good. The service was solid, no complaints. The negatives was the quality of the food. I had a burger, which was cooked as requested but was so greasy that grease literally flowed down my arm...I've never experienced that before. On top,of that the "lettuce" was just shredded iceberg, which is okay, except it was discolored. My wife had the fish and chips and the fish was WAY over cooked. I live 45 min away. My general take is, if I lived close by I'd eat there again. But I'm not going to make a special trip to return. read more
