This event is the highlight of my summer, for reals. From having to follow the twitter account around may to spending hours in the queue waiting to get tickets and watching the highly desired 4 day passes disappear. Oh but this is a taste of the convention you see, lines are a plenty. You will be spending a lot of time in line, but that is okay. Be social able, make friends with the enforcers, the geeks next to you and the video game designers. Go to panels that sound fun but avoid ones put on by drunk women. Enjoy the cosplay, and the games, and the crowds. Its only a few days and then you'll be going through withdrawal something fierce. This was the first year I tried the computer free play which was really fun! Also, watch your stuff. I had a really expensive camera stolen from my bag while I was playing a demo, which broke my heart. It won't deter me from going through all the highs and lows next year.

After attending Pax Prime for the past few years, I can finally write a decent review about this fun gaming convention. For those who aren't familiar with Pax Prime, this is basically a fun gaming event held at the Washington State Convention where people gather to try out / play new games, check out various panels, cosplay, and best of all, do some swag hunting. Tickets usually range around $45 per day at face value (or more in some cases, like a Saturday if you buy it off someone) and each day = new badge. Pax is a 4 day long event, with Monday being the shortest due to the hours. At Pax Prime, one of my favorite things to do is hunt down the cool swag that's given by the various vendors. Usually, free swag includes: t-shirts, lanyards, computer / gaming related items, pins....etc. With the exception of this year con (2016 = so so swag), past years had been pretty awesome in terms of getting freebies like usb, keyboards/computer mouses, headsets...etc. If hunting down swag isn't your thing, attending panels for your favorite games / interesting topics = a great way to spend time at Pax. In addition, the Expo hall (4th floor) houses most of the gaming demos of major companies (Nintendo/Sega/Microsoft...) and the 6th floor is Indie game land where lines are shorter for game demos. Some of the key takeaways I have learned over the years: -Stalk PAX twitter account for hints on when tickets are sold (or read Reddit for tips / advice) -If you're a diehard gamer/swag hunter, get in line at the minimum, 2 hours before opening (at 10am) -Be strategic and memorize the path of where you want to go if you're madly rushing through the crowd upon opening time -If you hate waiting in lines for the major game titles, spend time at the Indie games! It's awesome when you can chat with the developers themselves and have ample playing time when no one is waiting after you -For popular panels/panels you reallllly want to check out, go at least 1.5-2hr in advance and line up before start time. For me, I missed out on a Final Fantasy panel since the line was capped at 1.5 hours before the event started. -Make sure to download Twitter and follow Pax related accounts that will give you updates on lines, Pax parties, events, giveaways, etc. Also, downloading the Pax app = great way to have a map of the convention place on hand and the program of all panels -If you want to kill time/bored at the con, I recommend participating in the various tournaments (on various gaming consoles/tabletop games) or making use of the freeplay stations (PCs/gaming rooms) -For food, go venture out and explore Seattle. Anything within the convention area = pricey and crowded. Go at least to like 3rd and walk that street for food. The further you're away, the better the food options and minus the crowd. Pax is definitely fun and I would recommend it to all that love gaming :D

I did two days at PAX this year and that was enough. I spent about half the time at panels, and half the time fighting my way through throngs of people around the rest of the buildings and trying not to get stabbed in the face with pointy prop weapons. PAX is also now spread across seven buildings, so having prior knowledge of that part of Seattle (and where surrounding food places are) is REALLY useful. The panels were interesting, and I found myself wanting to go to more of them than I could. But they're REALLY woefully disorganized, and it's frustrating. Because of how scheduling works, there are hour-long panels that start every half hour. Why? That just means people are walking in and out of panels while the discussion is going on, and since you might need to travel between buildings which also takes up precious time. And then because they're hour long panels, if you go overtime then you run into the next panel, and then you're also late for the next session--assuming you hadn't already ducked out at the half-hour. Also, moderators should also be more vigilant with the Q&A sessions--if you have limited time for questions, don't let the first person at the microphone ask three questions AND follow up questions, when there's a line of 15 other people. That sucks. And then of course on Monday they didn't even let people into PAX until 10:20, when everything was supposed to start at 10. People had been lining up since about 8:30. I'm honestly surprised that nobody got trampled on the escalators up to playtest Hyrule Warriors or whatever. The staff (enforcers) were super cool and helpful even up until the last day, and I'm sure they had to deal with a bunch of crap over the weekend. Several of the panels I wanted to go to got canceled (one because NOBODY on the panel knew about it and so they didn't show up... fail) and they did well to keep us informed and entertained with giveaways and trivia, and they just made the experience a little less frustrating. The expo floor was okay, but I'm not a huge fan of being armpit-height with dudes that decide they're going to be unwashed and shirtless. That's so not cool. I'm also not a huge fan of lining up for 2+ hours to play a game where you might play for something like 7-10 minutes. That just seems like an inefficient use of time to me. The Indie Megabooth was really cool though; lots of fun devs who were willing to talk to you about the game that they had made, and you could play demos of really fun, compelling games for way longer. There were some amazingly wonderful parts of PAX that I had a great time at, but those were tempered by the crappiness of scheduling and just being ragefully overwhelmed and packed into seven buildings with 60,000 other people. P.S. The League of Legends playoff room totally freaked me out. 200+ people watching 10 people play one round of a game? What? :/

PAX is like nothing I've ever experienced before. It's part nerd homecoming, part family reunion, and a whole lot of crazy fun! People line up and they chat, play games, and generally have a good time. There's no douchbaggery*, everyone does their own thing and it's awesome. Panels, concerts, swag, celebunerds (Wil Wheaton, Jonathan Coulton, and Paul & Storm - OMG!), and all the games you care to play and then some! It's the kind of place I dreamed of as a theater geek high schooler, a place where you could be as nerdy and goofy as you want to be/are and you're not judged for it. It's the kind of place where men in kilts are encouraged (yes, please!) and costumes are the norm. After three days you feel like a zombie, albeit a happy one, in need of a week long nap and a vat of vitamin c. It's so incredibly worth it! Counting down the days to PAX Prime 2011! *with the exception of the Washington State Convention Center Staff, I'm pretty sure they get off on screwing with people.

They've got tons of pinball machines, but the thing I absolutely LOVED were the booths with the pinball machines built right into the tables. I've never seen that before and immediately thought it was such a cool idea. Definitely the kind of spot you stop into for a drink and then end up hanging out way longer than you planned. Overall just a really fun little bar with a lot of character. I'd absolutely come back.

That's not something paying customers want to hear. I ended up ordering a drink for myself while the guys were looking at the menu because they were doing a food hop, and us girls were doing a bar hop. During that time, the bartender came back to our table at least four times within about five minutes. Instead of being attentive, it felt pushy and aggressive, especially since they were still deciding what they wanted. I've been here a few times before, but after this experience, this will definitely be my last visit.

Food, drinks and of course a bunch of games to play. Difference here is they seem to host ESports and other games beyond arcade games which is cool. This particular visit was kind of like a Classic play some games and laugh along the way rather than expect to find gem games of days gone by or even present. There is a good assortment of light gun, classic fighters and of course DDR which they were real generous with - 6 credits on a swipe which is like 9 song/sets! There is a bar but it's kind of basic compared to the afformentioned Dave & Busters, which makes that part of their identity. Also the person selling me the game card was fast on talk, and slow on the explanation of how things work which could've been better. It was nearing close so I wasn't going go through the whole rundown. Fun time here if you're looking for something to do in the area, but a Barcade or Dave & Busters will do the job all the same.

Not only do they have bowling but they also have board games, arcade games, and pool tables all for the enjoyment of students. I came here just for their bowling but it looked so fun I might just come back for their other activities. For bowling they allow you to play by the game or by the hour. They also allow you to book all 12 lanes for a private event. All of the prices are on their website and they were all pretty reasonable. They also have discounts for faculty, staff, and students. We played three games with two pairs of shoe rentals and the total came out to be about $30 with a UW staff discount. Our lane malfunctioned once but one of the workers was swift in helping us resolve the problem so we could continue having our fun. The facilities were pretty clean and overall we both had a great time. Most people were students but even as a visitor I still felt welcomed. It made me feel old being in the college atmosphere around all these youngins but at the same time I felt like I looked like them and probably could've fit right in. One thing that made me feel old though: the worker at the front asked for my ID and my mind defaulted to my driver's license and the worker replied, "Oh, I meant your student ID." Ouch.

That said, there are only 9 holes and they're pretty small, so it goes by quickly. Drinks are all on tap and feature local/Washington breweries, which I really appreciated. I love supporting local! We came during their February deal and it was such a great value -- $45 for a pizza, two pint glasses to take home, two drinks, and unlimited games. Honestly, that made the experience feel totally worth it. Duffleboard was fun, though it looked a little outdated.
