I grew up in a place where berries didn't grow wild, but things like avocados and oranges were in abundance. Now that I have discovered this pick-your-own berries and subscription farm, though, all of this has changed. Today was my second visit to the delightfully lush Lazy River Farm down south, in Kent. Lazy River Farm is right now teeming with raspberries and blueberries that you can pick for $1.50 per pound. This is about one-fourth the price I pay for frozen berries at Whole Foods. But please don't make me calculate the cost of my gas in this equation since I am so happy thinking about how I am fiscally savvy to be picking my own. Plus, it's really, really fun! Visit Lazy River Farm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 9-5. And be sure to follow all the instructions on the posted signs because these farmers are serious about their wonderful berries.

We purchased three varieties of beans, garlic, onions, corn, zucchini, tomatoes, plums, radishes, blackberries, chives, the aforementioned lettuce, and probably a few things I can't remember, for $39, to split among the three of us. We stumbled across it recently, and it was honestly one of the best random adventures we've had in a long time. We were back within 2 days with the rest of the fam to keep the fun in the sun going. I couldn't believe how much there was to do for the price! If you arrive before noon, it's just $5 for a day pass ($10 after noon), and the kids can easily spend hours there. Animals to pet (both in enclosures and free roaming!) Berry picking (bring a bucket!) Nature trail Multiple play areas Bounce house Water features to cool off in What really made it special, though, was the owner. She is one of the kindest people we've met. She even keeps clean swimsuits and towels in the shop that families can borrow for free if their little ones unexpectedly want to play in the water. You can tell this place is run with so much heart, and I truly hope they get the recognition and support they deserve. If you're looking for an affordable summer adventure, this is it. Blueberry picking at Higher Taste is a can't miss summer event in our family. My kid calls it the…read more"blueberry tunnel". This isn't a fancy "farm" that's more of an amusement park (looking at you, Carpinitos). It's just a huge patch of blueberries! It's also a nice size to bring a little kid, you won't need to walk long distances. I recommend moving around because different areas of the patch have different blueberry types. We easily picked 7 lbs in about an hour and froze them for the future.

There are many shady areas to pick from and a nice cool shady area in front of their little inside store for the pickers that need a break. I brought the toddler nephews who weren't much help picking. But the staff treated them like they were their own family. The kids played and I picked. It was a nice afternoon activity with a built in fresh snack. The grounds were gorgeous and extremely well maintained. Gorgeous flowers everywhere. Bonus: The owners never use pesticides on the berries. The Buckets are sanitized after each use and the staff show you the best picking areas when you arrive. We will definitely be back.
