SIFF took over the old Cinerama a few years ago, and renamed it the SIFF Cinema Downtown. Huge theater with ample, comfortable seating and mostly good sight lines (with some exceptions at the front of the upstairs balcony). Seating is usually assigned and reserved, so I recommend buying seats in advance (unlike the other SIFF theaters, which are mostly not). I also recommend membership in SIFF, which gives discounted admissions for a year (and 5 free popcorns!). read more

I want to support this because I think it's an amazing addition to the community and I know it was recently saved! I think that more than anything, movie theatres in general are struggling. The high prices of tickets and concessions? It's just difficult. I know it's a little less if you have a membership though ($17 per movie rather than $20). It was nice to go see Star Wars in theaters of course! I know this is a crazy thing to complain about, but it was almost *too* loud. The opening scene of Revenge of the Sith is just a major fight scene, and I felt like I was right in the middle of it audio wise. Even my partner said it was abnormally loud. Maybe things have changed since I used to go to theaters more often! Regardless, the speaking parts were all at a normal volume. The music and fighting though, borderline unbearable in some moments. The concessions are fine, they're known for their chocolate popcorn. The regular popcorn was good too, and I prefer if because I love savory snacks! I think it could use a greater selection one day, but in this economy? I'm just happy we got to go see a movie! Hope to go more often so I can offer a more well-rounded review. read more

Came here for the first time during SIFF 2024. The theater is beautiful and new and modern as expected of a brand new theater. Huge screen and good sound quality. The best thing about this place is of course the chocolate popcorn, which currently is the SAME price as the regular popcorn. As a first timer, I went for the full chocolate popcorn and I regretted it because it was too much after eating 2 cups. I would fully recommend the mixed popcorn because you get the salty from the normal popcorn and the sweet from the chocolate popcorn. Surprisingly the chocolate does not melt because it just coats the popcorn and it makes a harder outer shell coating. So you don't have to worry about getting your hands all covered in chocolate ( which was what I was afraid of at first). Recommendations: if you need to read subtitles in a movie, don't sit in the front because the chairs lean back(whether you want it to or not) and when you lean back, you can't really see the bottom of the screen. The balcony is nice but the chairs up there do not lean back, and if you sit in the front row of the balcony, you'll get a Blocked view by the balcony handrails if you are a shorter person. read more

Absolutely unacceptable. I paid good money and there were no women's restrooms--only gender-neutral. I had to hold it the entire time rather than stand in line with a lot of men and use a stall beside men. It completely ruined the experience. Thankfully, the Warwick Hotel across the street afterward was very respectful and accommodating. I will never return to SIFF. My first review was actually removed, really???? I was SO happy to hear that SIFF saved the Cinerama we loved so much. It's such an iconic theater in Seattle, I was so sad to hear it was closing. SIFF thankfully kept the amazing outside theming and artwork on the building, changing only the sign along the exterior corner to have a SIFF logo instead of Cinerama. The interior of the theater looks similar too, with the classic red seats and purple drapes (unless that will change in the future), and yes, they have promised they will still have the chocolate popcorn - woo! They have done a great job renovating and preserving this place without making it feel too rundown. I think they had good popcorn and a cool selection of local drinks. We tried the chocolate popcorn, but personally I can't really eat a whole bag of it. It was good to try it but I think it smelled a bit better than it tasted - more of my preference than a comment on the quality. Definitely recommend trying a small bag once! My main complaints were that once you entered the lobby, it was chaos ordering concessions. We went for Dune 2 so it was busy and there were no clear lines or directions. Lots of folks were line jumping and that was pretty annoying because we were all trying to get concessions before the show started but it took almost 20 minutes to even order. Definitely recommend showing up on the earlier end. Also, the seating, if you're not familiar with the theater, was confusing. Several of the doors for the balcony areas aren't marked so you have no idea where to go. Up more stairs? Down the stairs? Some signage or direction would help! Overall we had a good experience and I don't think there was a bad seat in the whole theater which was pretty cool. I'd definitely come back for more movies, especially special events. So happy SIFF has re-opened Cinerama! The place retains of much of the classic experience (chocolate popcorn, anyone?) while also improving on it. Buying tickets is easy - you pick out your seats which helps for those who get anxious about standing in lines. Selection of concessions is wonderful - local wine, beer and ciders plus popcorn and other things you would expect at a cinema snack wise. I got the mixed chocolate and traditional popcorn which was fresh and a great combo of sweet and salty. The screen is huge and the sound is good; seems like every seat in the house has a good view. I took off one star because the seats seem comfortable but as a 5 foot 2 person I could not actually sit with my feet touching the ground, because the seats automatically recline, so I either had to kind of wedge myself up so it didn't recline or be basically laying down which made me worried about the person behind me and made it unable to consume popcorn. Maybe I will get better at balancing in the seats though as I will definitely be back! read more

This theater has so much potential. I recently went to see Mickey 17, and the screen and sound are great. They have a decent snack selection that isn't insanely overpriced, and I would probably go back for the mixed popcorn alone. But the chairs are absolutely dreadful. As a member of the very big butt club, I often look up reviews of seats in advance to see if they are plus size friendly. I had seen some reviews that the chairs were comfortable and reclined, so I thought it would be okay. I was wrong. The seat fit me comfortably enough, but the recline was SO uncomfortable. (If you are looking for fully reclining chairs with a footrest, these are not it; only the back reclines.) My companion and I thought the seats may be broken and tried a few different ones, to no avail. There is zero resistance to the recline and it was an awkward angle for my body. I ended up straining a [previously injured] muscle in my neck/shoulder trying to keep the seat back. I was so visibly uncomfortable that my companion suggested more than once that we could leave before the end of the movie. A few other things to note: 1) We arrived at the theater right as it was advertised to start (~7:30), and we stood in the concessions line assuming there would be trailers before the movie started. It may have taken us 10-15 minutes, and by the time we got into the theater the movie was rolling, so I'm not sure that they play trailers. Because the movie had started we couldn't easily find the assigned seats we had purchased. Thankfully, there were plenty of open seats and while we were a little closer than I'd consider ideal it wasn't awful. 2) They have refillable, recyclable plastic cups for their fountain beverages. They were pretty vigilant in asking you to leave the cup before exiting the theater--which I'm all for, and wasn't expecting. read more

Had a great time watching Wicked at SIFF Downtown! I wish I could have experienced the Cinerama in its glory days, but glad I could take part all the same. The theater itself is really impressive, with tons of comfortable, spacious seats. One thing I don't love is that you don't have much control over the recline. If I lean back casually, the backrest gives way. I would prefer it if they just remained upright. That said, video and audio are both great - with the latter backed up by a banging Dolby Atmos setup. I'll also add that both the chocolate and buttered popcorn are outstanding. The former almost tastes like a delicious breakfast cereal. I also enjoy being able to grab a Topo Chico, which is pricier at $4 but glad it's an option. read more

Cinerama is back!! But I guess we're not allowed to call it that anymore. I haven't been in ages - I think the last movie I saw there was 300, so that sets the context. It's probably the most popular singleplex around. It's been refurbished with really nice seats and seating is in two sections - main floor and balcony. The picture quality is great too. Being a singleplex, the box office and lobby only open 30 minutes before the showtime, so for today's screening of Wonka I had to wait a bit in the cold before I could purchase my ticket and head inside for some Chocolate popcorn. Another nice thing I really like about the theater is that the film audio is playing over the ambient speakers and in the bathroom so if you need to take a rest break while the movie is screening you don't miss the plot because you can still hear the movie, which is something I'd wish I could have in every multiplex (although not sure how that would really work). First of all, I'll explain that I have been a regular attendee of SIFF for about 20 years now. I love the main film festival that happens every spring, it's great fun and a lovely experience to view films with an audience that is truly appreciative. This weekend, we got tickets to see several films during the weeklong Film Noir festival (2025). It had been years since I had last been to the Cinerama, as I will always call it, despite the fact that its official name is SIFF cinema downtown. I was excited to see what it looked like now, and to try the "famous" chocolate popcorn. The films were great, wonderful, clear prints, and well attended; with a bunch of people here and there dressing in the era of the 1940s and 1950s. It always adds a sense of fun to the festivities. However, I'm sorry to report that the theater seats leave much to be desired. They're a decent size, and the seat cushion itself (under one's behind) is comfortable. But the back rests... I don't know if they used to have more "stability", but now they all seem to fall back into a reclining position whether you want to or not. We tried out several seats to see if we could find some that would stay upright, but no, they all seemed to be similarly lax. This includes the balcony, which I went up to to check out in the hopes that their seats might be less used, and be able to remain upright; but no such luck. Neither my husband, or I liked this at all. For myself in particular, I didn't find it very comfortable, and in that position, it also has a tendency to make me sleepy. Well, I don't go to the movies to sleep! So needless to say, I'm very unhappy with the state of affairs with these stupid seats. I know that.SIFF just took over the theater about a year and a half ago, but I really wish some wealthy patron would come along and replace or fix the seats! Honestly, except for times in the future when there's something I am "desperate" to see, I will likely be avoiding this theater. I will note that I got the combination popcorn, which is supposed to be half buttered and half chocolate. It was good, but had a little bit more of the chocolate than the buttered, and I would've preferred it to be the opposite. However, it's definitely tasty. I will say the chocolate popcorn is very similar to the taste of Cocoa puffs. Oh and by the way, the entire theater smells of chocolate. Now, I love buttered popcorn, and I admit, I rather missed the aroma of salted buttered popcorn in the theater. But that's just a personal note on my part. I had to exert effort to stay vertical enough to see the screen. The restrooms are problematic. The quest to avoid gendered labeling, while admirable, is confusing and could use better signage to direct people who don't want to see urinals in use to the more private restroom, which is on the other side of the lobby. read more

I've driven past this theater so many times for as long as I can remember. Never seen a movie there but have heard so much about it. Honestly, not sure what the hype is all about. Lobby is fairly small (got have my popcorn) for the amount of people the theater holds. Everyone was crammed in like sardines trying to get their bag of chocolate popcorn. Yes, I said chocolate popcorn. Not sure if that's a normal thing they have or if was because I attending the Wonka movie. Popcorn was really good. Definitely different having chocolate mixed in but wasn't disappointed. Theater itself was larger than I expected. Seats were comfy minus the fact they reclined to easily. At first, I was nervous I was reclining too far that I would annoy the person behind me but noticed there was a lot of room. But when I did recline, I started to fall asleep because they are comfy seats. Screen does appear to be larger than other screens but that could be my eyes playing tricks on me. Sound was comparable to other theaters Again, having driven past this theater a million times, I'm glad I can actually say I've attended a movie there. I love movies, and I adore the vibe of Cinerama but the steep ticket prices don't inspire me to come here often. Speaking of tickets, they don't offer child or senior pricing which makes this theater not cost effective (or friendly) for families or retirees. That's right, everyone pays $17.00. Not sure if they offer a military discount. One slim pro is the price is the same for matinee and evening shows...? Paying online? You'll get charged $1.50 as the added Convenience fee. The site boasts an "epic movie experience", but the experience is maybe a step up from average. Yes, the Dolby sound is great for action-specific films and the seats are relatively comfortable (and they lean back!). I do appreciate that they utilize reserved seating, but besides that there isn't much that makes this theater stand apart from other options or to back up the "epic" claim. Tips: -No outside food or drink -Concession closes during/before the last film ends. That's right, even if you're there for a 6:00pm show, don't expect to snag some popcorn for your trip home on your way out -They do have a bag policy (on their website)/may search your bag. Just an FYI if you're running late for your film, don't be shocked if they ask to check -Street parking or nearby parking garages are your best bets. Theater doesn't offer parking validation. Seattle is packed to the gills with film nerds! It's my kinda town. When I told my friend I was losing speed on my vacation and that I was leaning on seeing "IT" part two, she suggested Cinerama! Brilliant idea! The nerdiest of them all, owned by super nerd Paul Allen. Word on the street is that he grew up watching films here as a kid and he saved it in it's down fall. There's only one movie playing here at a time. You can still hear the dialogue in the bathroom if you have to pee during the movie. "IT" is 3 hours. I had to pee but I definitely scared some tween as she popped in to use the loo. She screamed. I'm going to have to ween myself from too much red lipstick. After the movie I sat in a stall with a flickering light. I could have sworn a red balloon was going to pop in. You can buy tickets online or in person and you can select your own seat. The seats recline comfortably far back. It's 17 bones. The assigned seating is a breath of fresh air. Saves you time to get snacks and use the facilities ahead of time. I smelled all the goodies and I was still too full to eat. BIG MISTAKE! They make a salty, sweet, chocolate popcorn concoction here that looks like the best thing I've seen in a theater!! It's called "mixed"! Yes, please. There's also Seattle staples like Caffe Vita Coffee and Theo Chocolates. There's even beer and wine. I was happy to see a vegan hot dog choice, fruit and cheese plates and some artisanal cheese puffs! Oh my! The menu has the perfect list of snacky foods. Next time for sure. I also enjoyed that there are a number of costumes in the glass cases in the lobby. They must've known I was coming cause they had Cabaret's Sally Bowles, Morticia as Gomez Addams and even the Adam West' Batman costume. I'm totally in love with Cinerama from the treats to the seats! The films are shown on a 97 foot curved screen using a laser projection system. You can purchase assigned seats online and in person. In the lobby you can find rotating exhibits of original costumes from various films. If you're looking for something different, the concession stand offers chocolate popcorn. I would recommend sampling it first. For me, it was a little too much so I stuck to regular popcorn. However you can order it mixed. read more

While I'm glad to see SIFF bring the theater back into business, I experienced a few major complaints that ruined my experience. My seat on the balcony had an obstructed view due to a large guard/railing in front that blocked 25% of the screen. I had to crane my neck and lean in to see the entire screen, which was very uncomfortable and strained my neck. Also, there's no ladies restroom! I was stuck sharing a restroom with 3 men who were already exposed at the urinal. Everyone was so uncomfortable that we all rushed through it, and no one stayed long enough to wash their hands! Additionally, the seats in the theater creak and groan when you lean back into them, which is embarrassing for the sitter and disruptive to their neighbors. I think I'll be avoiding this theater from now on. read more

I still miss the original Cinerama with the wider screen and wacky chairs, but it was showing its definite wear and tear. Thankfully, this has been retained and not torn down for yet another condo tower. Paul Allen's Vulcan company renovated this downtown Seattle theater with all the modern amenities...plush seats, wide aisles, decent sound system, and amazing concessions. There was even the movie audio playing while I had to leave during the film to use the restroom! Me and two family members were in line with the rest of UW Alumni awaiting the doors to open view the 11am showing of the new Star Wars film back on 12/16/17. Well organized getting the line through and out of the freezing cold! The concession stand had notable items like Uli's sausage, Theo chocolate, chocolate covered popcorn! The counter was well staffed with friendly folks to deal with the crowds, leaving plenty of time to scout out seats. The seats were comfortable with plenty of aisle space, cup holders, and not feeling like you are stuck in a middle seat of a plane. Usually I watch films in North Seattle (Oak Tree, Thornton Creek) or Shoreline's Crest, so I'm not as particular as some of the other folks with not so positive Yelp posts. I'm from old school where rickety chairs and sticky floors were the norm...trust me Seattle has lost quite a lot of movie theaters since the early 1980s. If it wasn't for organizations like SIFF and Vulcan stepping in, there would be even more losses. We made this a holiday day out in Belltown: found lot parking, doughnuts at Top Pot with the monorail passing overhead, enjoyed the Cinerama, had lunch at La Vita e Bella, and mochas at Uptown Espresso. Didn't even have to wrap and put a bow on it. My kind of holiday gift. read more

So my experience at Cinerama was okay... the people tending the concession area are nice, the fact that you can buy assigned seating is helpful, and the quality of the video and sound within the theater is a combined delight. I'm nooooooot entirely sure I'd opt for Cinerama over, say, Cinebarre though. Cinerama only shows one movie at a time, for example (because, uh, there's only one theater area)... so there's not always going to be something of interest showing. Also, the space within the front of the theater (for concessions or such) is fairly small. If there's a really popular movie, you have to time it well in order to not get shuffled up in the crowd. Ticket prices also strike me as expensive, but I'm willing to pay a higher amount *if* the experience feels worth it. I'm just not convinced it *was* at Cinerama. Also, the chocolate popcorn is... well... overrated. I'm sorry, but it is... in my opinion, anyway. I get the appeal. I do. The entire theater smells like the chocolate popcorn, which is basically like smelling warm coco puffs. Taste wise though? I mean... eh. I'm not going to fall all over myself to get this popcorn. All in all, a fine experience... but the cost, minimal concessions, and just general lack of movie choices are enough to put this cinema in the middle of my list for if/when I want to see a movie while in the Seattle area. read more

Let's say this wasn't the largest, best quality movie screen that's available in the world today, which it is. And let's say the seats weren't super comfortable and reserved with literally not a bad seat in the house. And just for argument's sake, let's say the sound wasn't beyond amazing. Cinerama would still be well worth the admission price for the smell of the lobby. I have NEVER in my entire life smelled ANYTHING remotely close to the aroma of fresh popped chocolate popcorn. I just left Cinerama. The chocolate popcorn is amazing- not too sweet and definitely no fear about chocolate melting all over your hands/clothes. We split a medium and it was more popcorn than we could eat. Yay, popcorn for days! It was a little disappointing that they were out of vegan hot dogs, as my husband really wanted to try one. We split a delicious pretzel and dipped it in a self serve cup of spicy, deli mustard. My husband was happy, because I am pregnant and found the last few bites of the pretzel very salty. That is 100% my taste buds and not a reflection on the pretzel itself. He was able to devour the rest of the pretzel, without much convincing. Parking can be a little tricky. Pay to park is 2 hour max. Luckily, we made it on time. Total cost: 2 tickets (at door), 1 medium chocolate popcorn, 1 pretzel, and 1 large drink= $54.00. We also paid $6.00 to park. I believe if you book online, there is around a $3 extra charge. It is pricey, but worth it for an occasional splurge. We sat in the first row of the balcony and had ample leg room. I can't help it! I'm a total movie nerd and I LOVE this theatre. I lost count of how many shows I have watched here over the past two decades, but it's always a great experience. I have moved, each time a little farther away from the city, but I still drive 30-40 minutes to catch a flick here. Maybe it's nostalgia or maybe it's just an awesome movie venue. After the latest upgrades of plush seats, Dolby Atmos surround there is no better experience. Did I mention local concessions? Sure there are fancy theaters on the East Side, but who wants to hang at those pretentious places? Cinerama manages to keep its nerdy soul and remains cool without trying too hard. read more

SIFF Cinema Downtown - Cinema Near Me - Seattle, Washington

I have great memories of this place from way back in the day. Its held up really well and I sort of like the big movie theatres. Obviously a plus to be able to grab your fave seat ahead of time and the popcorn is a draw for some of my friends. Being a long time Seattle peep, this place is sort of iconic to me and will always have a special compartment in my heart. read more
