The owners were super nice and always willing to help out even though we really didn't need any help because everything was there that we needed. We were at site 31 and it was clean and well-kept upon our arrival. We backed up to a tree line and had privacy throughout our stay. Other campers were respectful and the campground is definitely pet friendly. We didn't use the pool because it was early in the season but everything was clean and manicured. There's a great playground for kids although we didn't have any kids with us. You are close to great restaurants kayaking and hiking trails. There's no doubt this is a popular spot for the week of July 4th. This is my second year coming…read morehere and not a single thing has changed between the two visits. That's honestly the beauty of it. It's run by a family of siblings and their nephew and they are all extremely hardworking and friendly folks. Let me preface by saying it's a smallish campground that offers plugs for RV's to set up shop as well as a handful of one floor ranch-style cabins that contain the bare minimum. Not to say that's a bad thing-- besides, the point of a camp getaway is to feel unplugged and enjoy the experience/nature around! The RV's are set up pretty close next to eachother and as for the week of the 4th, there's a lot of families in soccer chairs/grilling/playing games and such all day outside. Across the board: - Extremely warm and inviting hospitality from Susan (one of the main kitchen workers who also runs this place) and her family - Solid view and access to Sebec Lake - Communal basketball court, cornhole, and bathrooms in the center of the marina but all of these are up on a semi slanted hill and in a patchy and rocky area of grass. But that adds to the fun-- bringing you back to old school days. Nothing glamorous but definitely could be worse - There's a hill you can walk down to see the dock and while doing so you'll pass a dirt volleyball court tucked away - There's a restaurant to order lunch and dinner, as well as a little office that serves as the check-in place and mini gift shop of trinkets if you will The restaurant: - The food is decent. Nothing fancy but also a good option if you don't feel like running to the store. There's really no other "takeout" food options nearby so it's either you cook your own food at your place along Sebec Lake or you go by the marina for food (whether you're staying here or not) - There was 20 of us (yes 20) and Susan was so friendly and ON TOP OF IT with our food and drink orders. The food was definitely better than we expected and it came out in a reasonable time, especially given there was 20 of us eating at once (although I'd suggest you call ahead for something like pizzas since those take more time here) - See menu photos for pricing. It can be pricey but again, there's nothing else really around (i.e. we ordered a fisherman's platter and it was $45) - Plenty of tables and chairs to comfortably eat and hangout - Solid selection of drinks and alcoholic beverages for sale in their fridge - Overall it's very open and has lots of natural light in the restaurant Our cabin stay (which might not be the case for all the other cabins but it could be): - It's definitely got everything you need to get by - Shower, toilet, sink, mirror, and towels provided. Although, the bathroom has no vent so you either have to leave the bathroom door open or open the window to air it out which wasn't too effective from a timing perspective but it did the job for us! - 3 bedrooms supplied with a full sized bed, a dresser, nightstand, and lamp - there is no A/C and it was 90° almost every day this week so it felt like a sauna but particularly at night it was really hot trying to sleep so be sure to bring multiple fans!! - Kitchen utensils, plates, glass cups, fridge, sink, old school TV, couches, dining table provided as well All in all it's a campsite that has a lot going for it in Sebec, for a cheap cost if you're looking to experience a getaway/go camping in an authentic fashion. :)

There is a free " shuttle service" to either 2, 3, or 5 miles up river. River was slow and safe. We brought our own tubes but they sell them as well. We used the free kayaks too! We got several great suggestions for things to see while in the area, and Jeff even loaned us a state atlas with some routes marked for a wonderful drive through the surrounding countryside. None of the sites have sewer connections, but the owner will do a "honey wagon" visit for just $5, and he'll also do the dump as you leave! There's no TV unless you have satellite, and I'm not sure how good that would be due to the large trees all around the park. But, our stay was so pleasant that it didn't matter.

So you hike Katahdin (see my Katahdin / BSP review). Get all sweaty and nasty. Get beat up by the mountain. You could camp out at roaring brook (many people do this)... OR, you could drive 40 minutes to the Big Moose Inn. Check in, some very nice ladies / staff / help... You feel at home right away. It's a rustic, Maine type place... Moose and bear heads hanging from the wall. Comfortable couches and furniture in the lobby. You can sit outside on a warm summer night. Then you take a well deserved (hot) shower. You won't be able to do this at Roaring Brook. Put on some clean clothes; go down to the bar, order a Baxter IPA (tall / large pour). It will taste sooooo good. And all the food at this place was awesome! They have a bar menu and restaurant menu. Everything is good. Quesadilla, burgers, salmon, tri-tip... EveryTHANG. You belly up, get a nice meal in you. Go back lay down in comfortable bed. Watch a little TV. I was lights out by 9-pm... Slept soundly - like a rock! Next moanin' they have complimentary breakfast with hot breakfast sandwich and typical contintental breakfast stuff... Then drive the Golden Road back. Helluva trip.

Bring your bug spray... the skeeters are legit. Spent WAY too much time in the Boatsman Bar but loved every second of it. All the staff is super nice, and fun as hell. Terrible with names but the Chef is a riot, and a phenomenal cook. Greg the Rafting manager is great people (apologize for the 4 hours I talked to you about rafting, probably repeating every question haha) and his team makes the river is a legendary experience. We had Jake has a guide on the mighty West Branch Penobscot and loved every exhilarating second. Though I am sure Jake would have preferred we paddled a little harder when he asked... All in All recommend the hell out of this place. For every bad experience you may have at a small establishment, you get rewarded with a really great one. This is one of those places. The site was raked but because this site had rain water everywhere, I think it is wet. We were screamed at by an owner while in the arcade that it was closing time. I visited Phil's, for the first time, in May. Stayed for a couple days to do a check out hike for…read moremy upcoming trip through the 100MW. On that trip I was the only guest. Phil gave me a tour of his place and provided some valuable tips. Coffee was ready in the morning - I appreciated the company (from both Phil and Woody). Used the grill that evening and spent time reading in the "community center". I felt totally at home and had a chance to destress from life. My sister and I returned at the end of June for our hike. Cabin was ready when we arrived. Phil was as engaging as ever. He dropped us at Abol Bridge in the morning. Unfortunately my sister fell and tore her ACL on the hike. Phil provided instructions for how to get her out and even, personally hiked in to look for us. After she got off trail, he helped me plan a two day solo hike. Really awesome place! I now think of Phil as a friend. I'd highly recommend.

My friend and I used Phil for our section hike of the 100 mile wilderness. Phil was wonderful to…read moreus. He gave us so much useful information about the trail, campsites and a resupply. The food drop was essential so we didn't have to carry 8 days worth of food. I can't thank him enough for making us feel so safe and secure. He sat down with us and went over our maps and made sure we didn't have any questions. He dropped us off at the trailhead. When we finished a day early he made sure we got picked up and we didn't have to wait long. His rates are very reasonable and he really went above and beyond for us. His cabins were so clean and comfortable. The shower was clean and had hot water. There is hardly any cell service in the 100 mile wilderness so using my Inreach was critical to staying in touch with him when we finished. He was also nice enough to text my husband with an update when my device wasn't working well. When we finished he offered us both use his personal phone to call our families which was a really nice gesture. I highly recommend Phil Pepin and his services. This stretch if trail is very remote and difficult. He knows the ins and outs of the area and that was very comforting to us!! Thanks Phil!!!!

I find it a bit silly that a state park in rural Maine built around a 5,000+ peak would model its park rules after Denali National Park, centered around the tallest mountain in North America. I think rules this restrictive only serve to make our parks less accessible to people who aren't affluent white liberals but...enough of my soapboxing. We came here to climb Mt Katahdin. And, for once in my life, when I say "climb", I actually mean it! We did a technical rock climbing route on the peak called "The Armadillo": https://www.mountainproject.com/route/106020335/the-armadillo We stayed at a luxurious lean-to at Chimney Pond. The rangers there were very helpful and friendly. They made the drudgery of the various oppressive rules almost...fun? I highly recommend staying at Chimney Pond yourself, climber or not. The views here feel nothing like New England. They feel more like Alaska, north of the arctic circle. Katahdin is only a little over 5,000 feet but it has big granite walls of rock unlike an other mountain in New England. (yes, including Mt Washington) My only complaint is that I got an insane amount of insect/arachnid bites on this trip. If you're staying in a lean-to, it might be helpful to have some sort of bug net! so many rules, so magical

After my trip I would absolutely say difficulty should be changed to hard to expert, the trip down from Hamlin peak was two miles down the mountain and extremely time consuming. Had a fantastic time at Peaks Kenny with the fam in June. Small park with a nice lake. Well…read moremaintained and very attentive Park Rangers. So much so that we got a knock on our camper door only minutes past quiet hours started telling us to turn the movie we were watching down. We visited Bissell Brothers Three Rivers both days we camped, which is sadly not something we'll ever be able to do again. It was about 20 minutes up the road. We also ate at the Quarry in Monson during our stay. Very very windy roads, be careful of wildlife at night.
