I learned about this business from a friend in advertising. I liked that I could send them ftp uploads instead of wasting a CD. The best thing about them is that they can laser cut acrylic to mount your prints on but they don't remember to sand all the sides. There's a small art store inside with basic drawing supplies for graphic or interior designers. They can do fine art reproductions and cater to industrial designers. read more

We came to Penpoint originally based on the price. My boyfriend is an artist and to test out giclee prints we went with the cheapest. The least expensive giclee printing I found in Los Angeles (really almost half the price of most). Marv, George, and Laura (yeah that's right, first name basis by the first visit- how adorable is that?) are the sweetest people. Seriously they are just genuinely nice. They got our work finished in less than a day! We didn't even ask for it to be done early. Every other place I spoke with took at LEAST 2 days. I came here to have my book printed and bound. They said they had done chipboard once but didn't recommend it, they don't do hardcover, they only take your cover file (for perfect binding) and print and laminate. they do spiral too. I needed hardcover so I just had prints made, there was something wrong with my file, so Laura (I think that was her name) stayed open later ( like 2 hours later ) while my friend fixed the file. It was $75 for 40ish 11x17 color paper and like 4 test pages. If I had gotten the soft cover, it would've been done in like 2 days! Also, the area in the back, employees only-ish area where we met her was like the inside of someone's house, but I love it. There's two adorable cats that we played with and the two guys that talked to us were so nice! Marv on the phone was really nice as well, if I ever need soft cover books, I'll definitely try again. read more

This review is a long time coming.... I want to start by saying they were super accommodating and managed to squeeze me in and review and discuss my print job, as well as even show me some tricks to optimize my art pieces. A friendly and cozy independent print shop. The print job was great and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, I had only taken the morning off work, which I explained to them, and they kept saying they'd be with me within the hour. This went on for hours. I got there as they opened and they didn't see me until 3 pm. I understand, without an appointment I am at the mercy of their schedule. I just wish they would have let me know how busy they were that day. I could have gone to work and returned at a time/day that was more accommodating for both of us rather than spend 5 hours walking around Pasadena. But that is the only negative thing I can say about this experience. Once they were able to make time for me, they worked with me to get my images exactly how I wanted them to look. The print job was outstanding and super professional looking. They were able to work with me on the pricing (within reason) and had the prints ready within a couple days. They've won me over and I'll certainly be using them for all my future print jobs. read more

Great place! It's finals week at Art Center, and i needed 3 very hefty books, printed and bound George was very helpful! he noticed that one of my books wasn't trimmed right (i had taken it home the day before to try and bind it myself), and offered to cut it for me free of charge! Two 70+ page pdf files i had wouldn't print for some reason, but George knew his stuff enough to do some computer trickery and re-write the entire script! Did i mention the discounts i got? also, they were open during the weekend for students! most print shops are only open on weekdays too! great people, and great service. i'll definitely be coming back here every term! read more

I'm an MFA student at art center across the street and used penpoint as a referral from an alumni for my final grad exhibition. they printed five colored digital paintings for me on gatorboard with a less than 24hr turn around. they responded to my emails promptly and it was all done quick and easy! I loved working with Marv and George especially for a really important day. I totally recommend using them for exhibitions when looking your best is your top priority. they understand the pressure and time constraints especially being an art center student who has no time to plan so far ahead. I would totally use them again for my future work and since they are right across the street from south campus, it is such a luxury for current and future students to have a great printer with fast turn arounds! read more

For their fine art giclee printing on paper I would rate Penpoint with one star, but I cannot speak for their other printing services so I've granted another star to give this business the benefit of the doubt. Speaking only in regard to their fine art printing services: The pricing scale per sqft. was a mess- the quotes seemed to be based on a whim. Whether it was a small or large number of prints there was never a mathematical consistency to the amount they charged. The quality of the prints was acceptable, but the cost was way too high and unpredictable. I used their services for months trying to make it work before I had finally had enough. I went to Art Works Fine Art Publishing, the quality of color in their prints is so much better, the prices are so affordable (and always consistent!), I always receive such wonderful, professional service. If you are looking for fine art printing I highly recommend Art Works, it's on the border of LA so it's practically in Pasadena, and based on my experience I can guarantee you'll be happier with the results. read more

I love this place! I needed a 16x20 inch canvas print for my first time participating in a gallery show. I had a very small budget and the proceeds were going to charity, so I had no hope of recouping the cost. I also needed it in a matter of days (four to be exact, and the digital painting wasn't even finished when I contacted them). Long story short, not only were they able to have it printed and stretched (i.e. wrapped on canvas stretcher bars) the day after I dropped off the file, they also gave me a lovely discount because it was for charity! Not to mention the quality of the print was wonderful. As for the customer service, Marv is a lovely lovely woman, a very welcoming and hilarious bundle of energy. George was mainly behind the scenes, but he greeted me with a genuinely pleasant smile, though I could tell he was extremely busy. I felt very comfortable there. I LOVE this place and will be bringing all my business to them, as will my mother, who made the trip to good ol' Pasadena with me. I'd recommend this shop without hesitation. read more

Wrinkled my prints and the bastard's excuse is because I was in a rush. I wouldn't be in a rush if they remembered to mount my prints in the first place. With no options left, I took my boards and as I left I could here the owner telling the worker who screwed up to not make the same mistake again. So because he has employees who can't handle the job, customers have to pay the price. Go to sky blueprint instead, they are flawless. read more

Very disappointed in Penpoint. George, the owner, seems very nice, but a bit disorganized. A lot of time wasted with me going in to discuss my needs and waiting for quotes. I relied on him to produce three separate projects to which he has committed verbally. After several weeks of back and forth, I get no quotes and when I followed up, I was told that they're too busy to take on my projects. Really? Why didn't George say so in the first place. It would have been nice to be advised of that up front and at the very least, to have the courtesy, to let me know without me waiting for yet another week for a response. I don't quite understand how someone can run a business like this. However, all worked out for the best since I found a great signage/printing company who is less expensive, very responsive and have a much quicker turn around time. read more

I lucked out finding this place. They saved me with a laser cut stencil which had unusually fine lines which was hard to cut. George was extremely helpful and friendly and knows his stuff. Their turnaround was much faster than I expected too. And my stencil looks fantastic. Marv who deals with customer accounts was also really nice and helpful. I sent them a jpeg for a 12 X 12 inch giclée print on canvas. They sent me a bill for 100 bucks plus taxes (which were figure a wee bit low). Well, they can afford to pick up some of the tab from the State's cut. I was shocked. I thought they were supposed to be cheap. For the same job, I am getting a printing of my photograph for 30 dollars. A seventy dollar (plus tax) price difference! I will never call or email them again. They are convenient to the Fillmore stop on the Gold Line. If I were to give a subject line, I'd say "Ripoff City." read more

I contacted this company based on the overwhelmingly positive yelp reviews, and have to say my experience did not compare with the rest of these. I needed a laser cut for an architectural model on short notice, and when I called Penpoint they were so friendly and understanding that I made an appointment for the next day (Thursday the 30th) feeling confident and relieved. It was clearly a family-run business, and I was glad that it seemed we could help each other. The project was due Monday after New Year's weekend, and I knew I would have a hard time finding anyone to do the cutting. But when I sent in my files, I got no response. I called multiple times throughout the day of my appointment and was told that the owner was not in yet, and then that he had left early and closed the store for the next few days for the holiday. Of course that is completely reasonable, but if he had not assured me that he could do the work I would have had time to go to another business! Due to their flakiness, I spent New Year's trying (and largely failing) to hand-cut my design. By Sunday the 2nd I was frantic. Since Penpoint's website offers Sunday appointments, I called and emailed explaining that they had disappointed me and asking if it were possible for them to still fill the order as promised. The owner finally emailed me and said essentially that this was *my* fault for not being "ready" (huh?) Also (admittedly this is a small point) I feel like it reflects poorly on a business to have an answering machine that contains no information, but instead six seconds of incomprehensible noise that I eventually realized was supposed to be music. And when emails from the owner arrive full of sentence fragments and misspelling-- also a bad sign. Penpoint's lack of professionalism put me in a very bad position, and the project was not finished on time. read more

I needed some window decals made. I did a google search and this place immediately came up. I called and got a lot of information from whoever answered the phone. I was told to email all the information we discussed. I never got a reply. A month went by and I still had this project on my desk, so I called them one more time and explained I never got a reply to my email. The lady Marv was so apologetic and didn't know what happened. From that point on, I got OUTSTANDING service. They bent over backwards to accomodate me and help me meet my deadline. They did a sample decal and fed-ex'ed it to me. I was so impressed by the customer service, they more than made up for the first unanswered email. So much so, I am using them again on another project. Not to menton they are reasonably priced! George saved my ass. I was working on a project with a fast-approaching deadline and I needed some wood/acrylic laser cut at the last minute. I called up a bunch of places, and all of them refused to do it since I didn't meet their minimum order requirement (usually several hundred dollars). I was about to give up when I found Penpoint Graphics buried in the Google search results. George (the owner) had no qualms about my project and was even willing to stay past closing to get it done for me. Sure, you could get a lot of your laser cutting done through Ponoko, but if you're in the area, Penpoint is the better option. Their turn-around time is much much shorter (usually same-day), prices are reasonable, and George honestly treats you like his best customer. You're not going to find that kind of service online. Oh, and he's got a 3D printer! read more

Penpoint saved my life. After I was left hung out to dry by Plotpro (see my review there), I came to Penpoint with the slimmest of hopes that I could still get my job printed. It was 5:30 pm, and I needed a 30-page portfolio for a job interview the next morning. Not only did they get it done, I was shown a proof and was able to ask for a custom-cut cover, something I wouldn't dream of asking for at any other print shop with such short notice. George, the owner, (incidentally a super-nice guy) did everything right in front of me, accommodated my every request, and I walked out of there an hour later with not one, but TWO beautifully-printed-and-bound portfolios. The final price was no higher than Plotpro's quote (for lesser quality paper, no-frills binding, and a 1-day turnaround which they WEREN'T able to fulfill) and well under Typecraft's (2-3 day turnaround, didn't get far enough to discuss any other details). The quality of the actual printing aside, I really need a print shop to deliver when they say they would deliver, simple as that. Penpoint is reliable, the printing is superb, and the personal customer service is amazing. read more
