We go to Pensacola Beach regularly, not for beach sitting so much but for the restaurants and entertainment and to watch the Blue Angels. My faves are Flounder's Chowder House and Paradise Bar & Grill. Pensacola Beach, FL has a long history with the current theory being that barrier islands were formed about 18,000 years ago when the last Ice Age ended. As the glaciers melted and receded the sea levels began to rise which flooded areas behind beach ridges. However the first bridges linking Pensacola to Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach opened in 1931. Before then, the only way to reach the island was by boat. As far as America is concerned some claim that Pensacola is America's oldest city, based on a discovery by researchers at the University of West Florida in Pensacola who say they proved Spanish Explorer Tristan de Luna established his Spanish colony of Pensacola in 1559. Some more interesting history is that Pensacola Beach used to called Casino Beach. That is because im 1929, the federal government sold Santa Rosa Island to Escambia County for just $10,000 and it got that nameafter The Casino Resort opened its doors in the summer of 1931. It was one of the first tourist retreats on the island and flourished from the 1930's to the 1950's. Pensacola Beach is a resort community on the Gulf Coast barrier of the island with white sandy beaches that include Opal Beach, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Pensacola Beach Boardwalk has shops, eateries and, nearby, the Pensacola Beach Pier stretches into the Gulf of Mexico. It's bordered to the south by the Gulf of Mexico, to the north by Santa Rosa Sound and Pensacola Bay, and to the east and west by the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and occupies nearly eight miles of the 40-mile-long Santa Rosa island. Another Pensacola Beach must-see is Fort Pickens, in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, it's one of only four forts never to be occupied by Confederate troops during the Civil War. Pensacola Beach is one of the better kept beaches in the area. There is ample parking at an expensive price. Plus showers, bathrooms, and other amenities. The white sand beaches have plenty of sand, unlike some of the other nearby beaches that have erosion. And of course, the scenery is great. Nature won't let you down. read more

Nice white sand! Get here about 10am on a Saturday and it's not wicked crowded. FREE beach parking & plentiful. Park to the right of the Sand Crab Bar. The blue beach umbrellas on the beach (2 chairs each) are $40 for the day and you can pay with a card, once the beach staff gets to you. Leave non-pilferable items in the chair and come and go all day. Don't worry. The staff will come to get their money. Lol. Chairs are first come, first grab also. Plenty of showers to rinse sand off. So beautiful...white sand and surf. Does it get any better. Why, yes...it does. Go out on the pier and watch the dolphins jump, and observe a school of sting rays. Lot's of fishing going on, but didn't see many catching. Stopped at a cute bar and had a killer bloody mary. Then walked thru a few gift shops. Typical tourist for the most part. My new favorite place to visit for the beach. The sand is white and I thought that is was fake, turns out it's real and I was wrong. It is comprised of crushed shell which gives it the whiteness.The ocean water is crystal clear blue. You can be swimming in water as deep as 6' and still see the ocean floor. I assume that the water has a higher level of salt because I was so buoyant. I just laid on my back all day and floated. There are several lifegaurd stations and a patrolling Sheriff car, to make sure everyone is okay. I can not wait to come back. read more

I just love this beach. First timer here but was greeted by some locals and were even kind enough to share their shade under their umbrella. On the particular day I was at the beach there were nice cross winds which made it a little cool even though it was after 5pm. The water is absolutely gorgeous. It was clear and there was no seaweed on the beach. It was obvious that school was back in session as there were very few children there. Either way it was a beautiful day at the beach and the white sand was beautiful and sugary. I had gone hoping to catch the sunset but at this particular beach the sunset really can't be seen. Note: There are no fees to enter and they gave a huge parking lot where parking is free. Seriously it's a great place whatever your age. There are several restaurants nearby and a nice peer if fishing is your thing. read more

Great beach, warm water. Plenty of lifeguards. No pets allowed but we saw a lady with a cat dipping it in the ocean....ok? The sand is fine, like sugar. Bring plenty of sunscreen, and an umbrella. A lot of gas stations & stores sell them. I dont think you can bring a dog here, the beaches are heavily patrolled, very safe, but I took my dog the the Pensacola Beach West Dog Beach only 2 miles away. read more

This beach was nice! Biggest downfall is parking on the weekend. Sand is white, and the water looks more lake like color until you go out deep. They have a number of restaurants and bars that you can enjoy while you are out! I did not see any chair or umbrella rentals, so be sure to come with your own supplies! For 4 days the ocean has looked like it has an oil slick or is hosting the Boston Tea Party. The water by the beach is black. This is due to a massive amount of sea weed that stretches for miles along the panhandle. We tried to drive to another beach 15 miles down the road and it was the same. The seaweed is broken into bits so even areas where the water is less dark, the bits are ever present. Also in the seaweed are jelly fish and broken tiny floating jellyfish tentacles. I did enjoy floating in the water and being stung in the neck by the jellyfish tentacles. It's like being bit by a mosquito. The dining options for breakfast are close to zero. There are 10 or so bars for getting gooned up at. So all these factors result in a grade of D- read more

In the continental United States, or "the lower 48," this is one of the nicest beaches I know of, as are the beaches to its west, continuing on to Gulf Shores, AL, and the beaches to its east, over to Panama City, FL and beyond. I just happen to know this beach better because, of all the Panhandle beaches, this one is the closest to the interstate, I-10, and thus easier to discover. It is known for its sugar white sand and tranquil, warm emerald colored waters. The surf is negligible. That's okay. I don't surf. I go to the beach to swim. Note that, based on rainfall, storms, or other natural phenomenon, the beach may not be crystalline in color, but this tends to be a transient condition, and the renowned blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico will "return." Also, you can't compare this beach to anything in California. Do you need a scenic backdrop behind your beach, interesting rock outcroppings, and other natural features as well as unnatural features, such as movie stars' homes? If so, this is not your kind of playground. If you come for the sand, the surf, and the serenity, then this beach will fit the bill. Pensacola Beach also is sort of a town and it can be confusing because I've seen it labeled on addresses as Pensacola Beach and as Gulf Breeze. The town I refer to has homes, which are either occupied year-round or seasonally, some shopping and essential services, but even more tourist venues, such as lots of lodging, dining, and gift shop options. It's a nice little town ... or faction of Gulf Breeze. Of further note is the fact that Pensacola Beach is defined differently by different people. It can be the beach across the street from the boardwalk and by "the beach ball," the water tower labeled Pensacola Beach, or it can stretch all the way west to Fort Pickens or all the way east, to the Santa Rosa County line, until you end up at Navarre Beach. However, forgetting about semantics and boundaries, Pensacola Beach is A-1, and I'm not talking A-1-a. It's even better than that. read more

Breathtaking beach with gorgeous turquoise tones in the water. White sand feels so soft on your feet! Very clean. Wish there were bathrooms and an area to rinse off though. We entered through an area that was after all of the communities that had private access to the beach. Once you go down the bridge don't enter the first public beach access area. Keep going further about 8-10 mins once you pass all those houses on your right you will see a parking lot with public beach access to your right and the ramp leading to the beach. We went at pensacola beach on memorial day holidays. It was crowded but the beach is very clean. The environment is very nice here. Lifegurads are also on duty and are very attentive. I have seen them helping people out there. Beach has white sand and clean water and I have been to beaches of Miami, Jacksonville but I must say this is beach is one of the finest among Florida. Pensacola beach has lost its appeal by allowing dogs and not enforcing rules. There is a defined area that is ignored on a daily bases and walkers are likely to find dog dropping on their search for shells. The smell is sickening and leave your kids and their shovels at home. Walkers should be prepared to be barked,growled and even attacked on a casual walk. I have experienced all of the above on many occasions There was a person assigned to enforce the rules but I have seen her twice in 3 years. I don't even know if she is still working. The entire gulf coast is lovely and the further you drive down from Biloxi going east across to the beaches, the more and more better it becomes. White Sand, Turquoise Water...Orange Beach, Gulf Shore, Pensacola or Navarre. So many spots in between. Some areas are heavily populated with people and lots of water activities. Very many spots are quiet and private. So the choices are endless. What ever you are up for that day. You can find it on either end of the beach. Beautiful beaches- white "squeaky" sand, aqua blue waters for as far as the eye can see. Beaches in the area have a 30 degree slope leading into the water- which proves to wear on your back if you are a beach walker like me. I prefer to walk at the edge of the surf- not many shells, but simply beautiful. I can only imagine how busy it gets in the summer- we had to sit in an hour of traffic just to get on the island.
