I discovered that the Pentagon City wine shop has gluten free beer!!! They are across the street from Costco not far from the Pentagon City metro stop. It is so wonderful having beer with pizza. If you are on a GF diet, you know it's difficult to find GF beer these days. Check it out!! I might suggest calling ahead. They have a limited amount of GF beer, make sure they have it in stock before you head that way. They also have a nice selection of wines; and they have classes and tastings frequently. Great place to find well curated wines. The store has options that are not in the grocery store which is great for not only special occasions, but a nice treat on a Tuesday. The staff is knowledgeable and has tried about every wine on the shelf. There are quite a number of tastings during the week. Some of them are free, whereas some of the more premium tastings have a cost, but are discounted for club members. It's one of the few places to get really great Japanese sake. The service can't be beat! I was able to partner with the General Manger Greg for a private wine tasting. All of our clients loved everything he sampled. He's well endowed when it comes to wines from across the world. I prefer red wines but he was able to offer me a Pinot Grigio from Italy that was nothing less than perfection. When entering the store you're pleasantly overwhelmed by the amount of wines they have for you to choose from. I also discovered I have a preference for Wines specifically from South America I would definitely recommend this shop to a friend. read more

Well, lucky me....I stumbled upon this delightful wine shop today! It is a small, but mighty shop with a varied selection of wines which are organized geographically and have refreshingly reasonable price points for what appear to be very thoughtfully selected wines. The manager (?owner) explained to me that the store is designed to offer affordable, excellent quality "everyday" wines. This shop is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! Stopped into the new Pentagon City Wine Merchant (across from the Costco) and had a lovely shopping trip. The wines are at affordable price point. The staff person was very helpful, and also shared that they have beer and wine tastings on the weekend. I look forward to going back and trying out new wines. He helped me and my wife select our wines for the holiday and not only were we blown away by his recommendations, everyone at our Thanksgiving table loved the wines! UPDATE: I stopped in recently and it appears our favorite wine store has lost it's MVP. Ben, the manager who really made this place incredible appears to have left, and the guy who replaced him cant quite cut it. We asked for recommendations (like we always do) but none of the wines really hit their mark. I requested a super dry white and the new guy recommended us one that was off dry at best, he also recommended a red to us but it appears to be victim of sun damage (i notice they dont keep the blinds down anymore, bad sign), and over all we were also disappointed with the new guy's service. He wasn't terrible but he has no where near the same tact and charm that Ben has. He made us feel pretty uncomfortable as he was quite awkward and seemed uncertain in his recommendations. I wish we had known Ben was leaving as he delivered some seriously impressive performance, we would've loved to have known where he was going as we would likely would take our business there! read more

Only good things to say, although the location wouldn't seem to attract much traffic unless you are across the street shopping at Costco. I wouldn't say the selection is "esoteric," but the array of wines is organized in a way that makes browsing easy and interesting. And very appealing prices. Was in town for a couple of days. Tried asking for a particular wine and the young man "helping" definetely didnt know what I was asking about. So tremendoulsy rude his answer was more about the cost of the wine. Actually make me feel as I could not afford one. I just couldnt understand the reason why. Poor poor customer service. Just moved to the area and stumbled across this gem of a shop that has not only a great selection of wine, but also a very helpful staff! Every recommendation so far I have loved and I just moved from California wine country so I definitely know a thing or two, especially about my favorite varieties. They also have a few great varieties of German and Belgium beers as well which are hard to find! Also they can special order! Will come here as long as I'm in the area. read more

I would disregard the 1-star review. Must be a real anomaly. Service here is excellent. The french lady running the store knows her wines... really, really well. And the breadth of the selection... They sell the extremely-hard-to-find French Bergeracs at absurdly reasonable prices. (Truly, for reasons going back a few thousand years, one seldom finds a Bergerac outside France.) Nope, nope, nope! Walked in and the employee greeted us. As we were responding to him, he got on the phone. We were in the store for about 5 min. He remained on the phone the entire time. When they first opened, I was a little leery since the selection was extremely limited, and Ryan, the owner while pleasant didn't seem very knowledgeable. I came back a few times, and once even though the hours showed it was open, no-one was there. Really, how unprofessional! Next time I came back I finally met someone who wasn't just a "warm body". I told him what I liked and didn't like (in my layman terms), and Greg Glunt knew his stuff. In the few months he was there, he totally expanded the inventory, my more narrow views, and suggested numerous incredible wines to me. I had a really important get together a few weeks back, and Greg recommended the wines, and EVERYONE raved about them! I stopped by tonight, wanting to revisit some of his recommendations, and looking for suggestions for an upcoming high end dinner party. Greg wasn't there, and I was told by a youngish Asian woman who didn't seem to speak a lot of English that he was on "vacation". I asked several questions about wines, and the woman had NO answers. She actually asked ME to help another customer with her requests!! When I threw my hands up in the air in frustration -- seriously I'm a novice, looking for my own answers, and the proprietor is asking me to google wine reviews for her -- I said "when is Greg coming back!" She finally came clean and said he was no longer employed there. I was not happy. You're either 7-Eleven selling cheap wine with a minimum wage clerk who knows nothing, or you're a wine shop in a nice area with someone knowledgeable to answer basic questions. read more
