Penzey's is a great location for all the spices your heart desires! The company is based in Wisconsin and has had a location in Old City for about a decade, moving from The Bourse to 3rd and Market after 2020. The location is pretty large. They carry all the spices, usually in at least 2 sizes of every spice. The store is clean with a solid layout. The staff is always very friendly. Sign up for the newsletters to be the first to know about sales. Bill Penzey, Sr. was a legend and Jr. is his own legend. If you receive the newsletters, you will know exactly where he stands on kindness, humanity, and general goodness. If you're liberal, definitely support Penzey's. It's a win-win. read more

I was a little worried my nose would get overwhelmed with all the spices, but I was pleasantly surprised with the sheer breadth of spices and flavorings in the store. Staff was very nice and helpful for our first-time visit. I appreciated that everything was very clearly labeled, and most of the spices have a sniffing jar that you can see what you're getting. All hail the house of spice! For a lot of reasons, the Philly Penzey's location is one of those reviews that has been several years in the making for me. When I had gotten enough of a feel to drop an excellent review of their store when it was located inside of the Bourse it was announced that they were leaving the location and opening a new one elsewhere in Olde City. I was eager to try it since it opened only for a global pandemic, moving out of the city, and other things to delay that significantly. But during that downtime, I relished in the many online sales and deals that Penzey's has to offer to keep my cooking on point. And whether you're looking for spices that bring the salt, herbal aromas, or mega heat, like to keep it traditionally solo, or mix things up in a mega blend, Penzey's has something perfect for your kitchen! Shopping online is fine and easy with Penzey's but when I finally had time to I was able to hit up the new Olde City location, and when I did I was instantly provided with a friendly greeting, help in locating that treasured Fox Point Seasoning (if you like your meats and fish seasoned with and herbal and garlic blend then its an absolute must) that I knew I needed, and was provided with some spot-on recommendations. There's also something to be said for the colorful merch that you can get with its signature spice blend logos emblazoned on, and the perfect gift box options that you can put together to bring in the perfect gift for your friends and family who cook. Staff are quite helpful. I try to buy smaller quantities and shop more often so that my spices stay flavorful. Try their blends. You name it, I have it!!! I probably try all their spices and I love them!!! Since I moved to Naperville, IL in 2001, I visited the store every month for my free sample and I always had to buy something else, of course. The best spices ever. The smell in the store is amazing, it transporting you to far away places like Morocco, Greece, Spain, Asia, Italy. The plain ones, like garlic, rosemary, black pepper are fantastic but the mixes like BBQ 3000, Mural, Fox Point, Sunny Spain are so creative and a perfect mix. Some times they come with very interesting ones like Justice, Revolution. Or the care, soul, cook boxes etc. And I love the little gifts and small details I receive now when I order online. Like samples of spices or pins or cards with messages. Also the great cooking recipes. And the extracts like vanilla, almond, lemon, so fragrant and real. But the important of this brand is the freshness of their products. They are like magic. They transform any of your dishes to a real gourmet experience. So when people ask me "what is your secret"? Includes many of Penzeys' spice combinations. Great gift ideas and gift boxes that you can furnish with your own chosen selections. Also, mugs, tea towels and assorted kitchen items. If you're not on their mailing list, you should be, because they have fantastic deals weekly, and gift cards every few months ($50 card for $35). So much fun shopping here! I absolutely LOVE coming to Penzeys on my lunch break to destress and find spices, seasonings and spice blends to inspire me in the kitchen. Although the wonderful employees at this location have advised me that the spices are not certified organic, they are held to an extremely high quality standard with this company. Speaking of the employees, they are so helpful and knowledgeable! The one person who I know has been working since this store was at The Bourse is always able to answer my questions and always let me know about the very frequent sales that Penzeys has. I definitely recommend signing up for their email list This location is spacious and always well stocked, so I definitely recommend either coming by to shop in store or to get an online pick up order. This store surprised me in two ways - it's absolutely huge inside, and the prices are incredibly reasonable! The prices are comparable to standard grocery stores, perhaps even a bit cheaper ($3-7 ish), and on top of that, there are great deals and sales. Obviously, the quality is much higher, and everything is much fresher and more flavorful. I bought a whole bag of really unique things I couldn't find anywhere else, and it was under $25! I feel silly I didn't know about this place. I will buy all my spices here from now on. There is so much variety, it really is thrilling. I've never been to a spice shop where you can smell every single thing! It would be such a fun place to go with a friend and discover new things and chat about food / cooking. It's also an incredibly valuable learning opportunity. You can figure out what you like and don't like. You can figure out why you love (or hate) cuisine from a certain part of the world. They really should have classes here, if they don't already. Everything here is so unique, you could put together a fantastic, personalized gift for someone. Penzey's is a gem in Old City! Reasonably priced, high quality spices, herbs and baking supplies, a very friendly and knowledgeable staff and wonderful gifts. I have been shopping at Penzey's online for about twenty years, and previously at their prior locations in Chestnut Hill and in the Bourse building, but I'm trilled to have them right around the corner from me at 2nd and Market.
