What a treasure! Cutting through with my friend I spotted the sign from across the market and made a new line towards it. I am a woman obsessed with tea, herbs, fragrance, cold process soaps, crystals, essential oils....you get the drift. This adorable little shop made me say 'Wow' more than once. But once you find this gem, the cashier is certainly knowledgeable to handle any questions you throw his way. They are reasonably priced and claim to get stock in often. I am secretly crunchy so as soon as I saw the vials, bags, and shelves of organic and natural remedies, medicines, supplements, relaxation aids, and beauty products hidden beyond all of the fluorescent lights of Reading Terminal Market, my heart skipped a beat. They have a HUGE selection of dried herbs to cure whatever ails you. The only thing is I wish that they had more descriptive cards or packages so you could learn more about the product. I am assuming that the people who go here already know what they are getting but for a no0b like me I found this a bit confusing. ****EDIT: Owner wrote to me to let me know that they are unable to do this because of FDA Regulations. They're also online which is great for when I don't have the chance to get down to Philly on the weekend. Great selection! I got a sage soy candle that smells divine. I can't wait to light it to see if the throw matches the in-the-tin scent. Medium-sized candle, $13. Tons of oils and soaps and other nature-made health/beauty products. I could spend all day in shops like these. It was quite busy on a recent Saturday -- it would have been nice to have had a salesperson available to answer questions. But she was stuck behind the register checking customers out. I saw that most products were priced at going-market rates. $11 for homemade deodorant, a few dollars for a sage incense stick. Various prices for the essential oils; I had never heard of that company before so I didn't purchase any of those. But they did have a good variety of options there. Would love to go back at a less busy time to peruse some more, ask questions and maybe whip out my phone for some google researching while looking around. I was running errands one cold morning, and on my way to get my sons eyeglasses fixed I realized I arrived an hour before the store even opened. So I decided to walk over to the Reading Terminal instead, get a coffee, and walk around the shops a bit to kill the time. Amid all the loud commotion of the early morning setup and unpacking, imagine my surprise to come across a quiet little herbal shop, packed to the ceiling like a library of teas and holistic remedies. Pagans paradise, if thats your sort of thing, but man do they have EVERYTHING! The sales lady was really nice and helpful, and helped me pick out exactly what I needed. The quality of the products validate the price. I want to see this store here for a long time :) TIP: The Goji tea is soooo good! I came here as I was perusing the reading terminal market. What an awesome store! There were so many things to look at, lots of holistic oils and lotions amongst other things. I purchased two "dream balms" , one for me and one for my sister. I love it, it smells wonderful and is very relaxing. If I ever visit the reading terminal market again, I will come back to this shop for sure. read more

This place is pretty much as crunchy as it gets. If you know what you're looking for at an herbal shop, this place has it. And the staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. However, I can't count the number of times I've walked through it or by it and heard people ask for cilantro or oregano. No people, not those kind of herbs. They have TONS of cool products and a lot that appear to be sourced locally. I took my mom recently as this shop is right up her alley and she tried one of the natural bug-repellant candles, and was really impressed by its efficacy. I fully appreciate this level of customer service, and applaud the quickness with which they responded to my complaint. As I stated before, the young ladies that helped me were helpful and honestly attentive, but having worked in retail off/on for years, it is the responsibility of the sales people to ensure that when they're ringing you out, the items you're being charged for are correct, hence the 4 star rating. That said, mistakes happens, and when a company is quick to acknowledge and correct the mistake, it's worth noting, as far too many do not! I may shop with them again - online only (I live across the country) and their products are great so far. Just make sure you pay attention at check out, as you should at ANY retailer. I almost felt he was a little to "in my face" and this doesnt seem necessary in a store like this. But he knew his stuff so not a dealbreaker. Anyway products were good so of course I had to return. Next experience was great. A woman named Deeanna helped me when I had a question about a tincture. She had such a good soul and emanated a positive vibe that I have never experienced in a store. I found most of the items that I was looking for but the associate sounded irritated when I asked what the difference was between two types of oils. "I don't know" she replied coldly before walking away. No attempts to help or ask the other associate if she knew. Im a regular here and these people know their stuff! They has a tea or tincture for almost anything you could need. My favorite product is the assorted lip balms with adorable labels. They are made with natural ingredients and actually work longer so I apply less often than I would have to for a typical chapstick. The wild sage spray is perfect for misting after being in the summer heat while being a natural odor eliminator and gentle on the skin. They also supply Urban Moonshine a great product line for natural remedies for colds and body aches. The Herbiary is kind of the only game in town, and I want it to do well. I bought 2 essential oils when I was visiting philly a few weeks ago. I like their selections of oils and the price is very affordable. I wanted to buy the rose absolute oil. But they said it was out of stock. I ended up bought the neroli oil and rose Otto oil. I just open the rose oil and it does not smell like rose at all. It smells fake, like soy sauce mixed with some sort of flowers. I added some drops into my rosehip seed oil and now my rosehip oil is ruined. Well, when the price is too good to be true, it is probably too good to be true!! Be aware. read more

I go to the Herbiary store at the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.Not too helpful and friendly as far as the staff. They seem to be useless for that! You will think going there to look at the many herbs and spices and to learn about them and get information will be the thing. I was there about 3 times and the staff there, usually about 3 women will greet you in a warm," hello", or how are you? Or Welcome to Herbiary let me know if you need any help. You do not get that! It seems they are just there to keep the items neatly in place on the shelves or make sure none steals anything. Not to say that is bad but they could be friendly and smile not look depressed or disgruntle or have that," I do not want to be bothered" look. It is sad for an herb store staff to have an demeanor like this. It makes me not want to go there anymore and buy my herbs somewhere else. It is good to buy in person from a herb store to get a first hand in hoe they look, smell and get information about everything. I research some essential oils and ingredients to use to make homemade toothpaste before going there. I'm glad I did be cause the girl there seems to not really answer any questions or have a long conversation about what I was saying. You cannot have a store like that and you do not seem to want to converse with the public. I hope those women at Herbiary do not have 'SELECTIVE" in whom they want to speak.
