We recently lost our dog, and we were looking for another one, and had a specific breed in Mind. We saw that they specialized in toy and small breeds. We found a little adorable cutie named Wyatt that really touched our hearts. I dealt with Sylvia, Deborah, and Laura Tonkin, the director. They were all really nice people and I enjoyed them to the fullest extent. Laura was super nice. Wyatt had lots of adoption applications in for him, but Laura deemed myself and sister the best fit for him. Laura called me on the phone and explained to me how much he meant to them, all of his issues, etc. I LOVED how they were very transparent about any health issues, behavioral problems, etc. They had all of his shots up to date, micro chipped and all. They even gave us a certificate for a free visit to our vet. He went and checked out clear. We had such a wonderful experience with PUP. I like how they don't go by first come, first serve as many rescues do, but take the time to find the right home for the pet, as they should. We drove all the way to Snoqualmie, WA from Seattle, WA to pick Wyatt up and don't regret a single moment of it. He has been such a JOY to our lives. My friend asked me to sponsor her for the Walk for PUP 12 years ago, and I always knew that I wanted to get a dog after I retired, so I contacted PUP and they told me that they had a small black dog, and her name was Cissy. Cissy was a scrawny 3.4 lb, half Yorkie and half Papillon, dog approximately 15 months old and had been found in the forest outside Olympia, and had been badly abused. You can never have a broom, or vacuum, as she will cower under the bed. She had the most beautiful face and big black eyes, and she just stared at me. We adopted two dogs from PUP. The first adoption went very well, no problems. The second adoption, however, did not go so well. The second dog we adopted from PUP had a stage III heart murmur that we were not told about. We found out when we took our new pet to PUP's recommend vet, the same one that PUP uses. The vet examined our dog and within 5 seconds told us that "she has a significant heart murmur" and then proceeded to explain what that means. That basically, the dog will, at some point, go into congestive heart failure. We explained that we were told that the pet had a "clean bill of health" to which the vet responded: "This is not a clean bill of health." She explained that there was little you can do, until it gets to a more advanced stage, which can only be determined by a $500.00 ultra sound. We contacted PUP right away, at first leaving a message and then talking with the owner, Laura Tonkin about the fact that the dog we had just adopted was diagnosed with an advanced heart murmur. PUP did not remark on the matter. We were told by the vet to put our pet on a fish oil supplement, which we did. We were unsure of what to do about the fact that we had adopted a dog with such an undisclosed illness, but aside from occasional coughing, she was doing just fine. Less than 6 months after adoption, she began to cough more, she slowed down and then her breathing became labored. We took her to our vet and were informed that she was going into congestive heart failure. The vet got to work doing the recommended tests and getting her on the medication that is designed to treat the symptoms and prolong the pet's life. We, of course, gave a green light on all the treatments. At this point, I do not have anything bad to say about PUP or the pet or the fact that she has this disease. This is a living animal and we all live in the real world and nothing is perfect. I understand. Our bill, was in excess of $800.00. We wrote an email to PUP explaining the situation, making it very clear that we had no intention of returning the dog, but were dedicated to her life-long care, and requesting some kind of reimbursement. PUP's response was decidedly inappropriate in my view. PUP's first response was that they didn't know about the heart murmur and would have told us if they had known. I don't doubt this, but at the same time, it is irrelevant, especially considering, the fact that we took our pet to PUP's vet and in all of 5 seconds that vet told us about the condition. The next response was that they have never heard of using a fish oil supplement. Again, irrelevant. The final response was, in my opinion, the most inappropriate and most insulting. They would be happy to take the pet back. I was appalled. Aside from the fact that I made it very clear that I was not going to bring her back, this would be the absolute worst thing for this pet. I was requesting reimbursement on something that should have been done prior to adoption. I even suggested having PUP's vet review the bill and propose non-emergency rates. Basically, anything to help offset the costs since surely some portion of this vet treatment should have been done prior to adoption, such as the ultra sound, but PUP refused and stopped returning our emails. The situation is unfortunate, which is excusable. Again, we are talking about a living creature, and no one is perfect. But the handling of the issue after the fact was, IMHO, simply unprofessional not to mention insulting. read more

We will never rescue another pet through this organization. While I do believe they have an animals well being as paramount in their minds, the way they go about their adoptions/procedures is anything but transparent. We recently saw a little Rat Terrier (their description) that we drove to Issaquah to check out. She was a cute dog, quiet, sweet and we decided to take her home with us. On their website, it said she had all shots, was spayed, and microchipped. There were also some other comments about her waiting at the door to be let out, etc. When we got to Mud Bay Issaquah, which is where they do their "intro.," we were immediately told the dog spent about 2 months at the vet and had all of her teeth except 4 pulled. "Worst set of teeth the vet had ever seen." WTH? When I asked Laura, the Director of this organization, why they are not forthcoming with pet health/issues - what I got back was a long and rambling email about Me and how I could've walked away, if I had asked for the dog's records they would have given them to me (but why do I have to ask if there are issues?), blah, blah, blah. Blaming me and completely missing my point, i.e., be upfront and over disclose. You want what's best for the dog - right? It is now a week and we are still waiting for vet. records and microchip records from PUP and their vet. (who has no record, by the way, of DHPP and bordatella for this dog contrary to PUP's statement in their advertisement for the dog). In fact, I just had my vet.'s office call their vet. for the records (we were told we would get them within 72 hours) - and our vet. was told they wouldn't be sending the records because we changed the dog's name!!!!! What? Needless to stay, I called PUP's vet.'s office and we WILL be getting this dog's records. I hope it has everything we were told she had - otherwise, as Laura offered - this dog will be going back. DO NOT adopt from PUP or any organization connected with it. read more

I have been volunteering with this org for six months now and I have to say I am very impressed with how this non profit animal rescue is run. They always make sure that they find the best possible fit for both the adoptor and the adoptee. I have volunteered with a few animal rescue groups over the years and this is by far the best run rescue I have come across. My family is now in the process of adopting a dog through PUP Rescue and we could not be happier!! Highly recommend working with these folks. I adopted my Corgi/Dachshund mix from PUP about 2 years ago. Everyone was super nice! We went and met our soon-to-be dog bodhi at the Issaquah Petco along with the Adoption Coordinator and Bodhi's Foster mom, so they could meet us, and our roommates dog, to see if we all got along. We had already filled out our application online, so it was super easy and we were able to take him home that day! They have sliding scales for the adoption fees based off the breed and age of dog, etc. Anywhere from $75-400. They take in a lot of dogs from high-kill Shelters in CA too. They have lots of adoption events around the Issaquah area too. Bodhi had originally gone to PUP 2 years earlier and then when the people who adopted him had to give him up, we were able to adopt him. They have a great policy that if you have to give up the dog you adopted, to please return him to PUP. If we decide to adopt another dog, we will definitely do so through PUP again! read more

We were looking to adopt a dog, but had to get a smaller one due to my allergies. After looking around local shelters for months, and finding only really big dogs we were discouraged. Luckily we found PUP! They focus on taking in smaller dogs (some from high kill shelters in CA). They have an excellent web page that is up to date with current photos of available dogs that was extremely helpful for us. We couldn't decide just from a picture, so we scheduled a time to meet and greet with our main pick at an adoption event. Everyone was so extremely nice. Even better, the dog we were interested in had lived with a foster family for a week, so they had some idea about his personality and characteristics. Being my first dog, I was really concerned about what type of personality he/she would have, so it was reassuring to know more detailed info about him before jumping in. My fiance and i were looking to adopt a dog and were recommended PUP by a friend. As we are in the beginning stages of looking i filled out the adoption application quickly and sent an inquiry about a couple of dogs i had seen on the site. After a couple of back and forth emails with Laura (who must work for the organization) i received the following email: "Hi Lauren, If your kitty is only 2 and you got her in May of 2013, she is due for her vaccinations. Madison Street didn't have any records for her at all. Not sure why. Maybe they were misplaced. Also, I hope you rethink your kitty being outside. A friend of mine just lost her little 4 year old kitty Mouse to eating a mouse that was tainted with poison. Mouse made it home but quickly bled to death internally, which then showed itself in her eyes, nose and other orifices. My kitty is 11 and will continue to live a nice long life inside. Laura" Below is how i responded. "Laura, I realize that my cat is due for her vaccinations, but as i mentioned in my previous email she has been an indoor cat for almost the entire time we have owned her and has just recently been an indoor/outdoor cat. Based on information i was given by a friend who works at the Everett Animal Shelter we did not need to get her vaccinated when she lived only indoors and did not have contact with any other animals. It is very strange that Madison Street Animal Hospital does not have records of our cat. We took her there twice while she was sick and later took her to ACCESS. However, I fail to see the necessity of explaining all of this to you. I am extremely offended that you would email me with such a graphic story of your friends cat. I really hope you do not treat other possible adopters as you have treated me in your previous email. You are doing the animals a huge disservice. I do not wish to move forward with any adoptions through PUP. It is very unfortunate as we will definitely be providing a happy and healthy home for our new dog as we have done for our cat. I personally feel you are doing a disservice to your cat by not allowing it to explore outdoors as cats have done for thousands of years. This is my opinion, as you have stated yours. I have to say Im fairly disappointed in PUFP. We filled out an application in full and were highly interested in a pup they have for adoption and were turned down with a simple email stating we have a young child and this pup wouldnt be best. This is without having us meet with it to see how things went or even speaking with us further. They also will not return my emails. I'm certain I wouldnt put my child in danger to adopt the pup and if the visit went badly, we'd look at other options but they turned us away quickly and a chance at a great home for one of their dogs. read more

Had an issue with "Trish" Horrible management didn't even email to tell me we weren't a right fit for the dog when she had already rejected our application without telling us. Then she was rude by saying she had gotten my emails, and she would contact us with further details. I asked her how long her usual response time to applicants was, but she didn't answer that question. Maybe I wouldn't email you if I knew what was going on. Do not expect them to be responsive. No dogs fit a RN and Programmers life. So sad because it's the dogs that miss out on good homes, while they are rejecting people looking for the best homes. They even ask if they can do a home walk through and I don't feel safe with strangers in my house through an online business where employees or volunteers that haven't been background checked. Last April we adopted Ranger from PUP, a 2 year old Chihuahua/terrier mix. He's a great little dog who has gone through basic and advanced obedience training, and two agility classes. He's ready for an agility trial. In October we decided Ranger needed a friend to help burn off energy. This time we adopted Joey from PUP, a 4 year old terrier mix. Ranger and Joey hit it off right from the start. They'd run around the yard together and the rest and nap together on the couch. Joey has also completed basic and advanced obedience training and recently completed Canine Good Citizen training. The evaluation will be conducted in late June so in the meantime Joey will be going to Therapy Dog training. He loves people and especially children and should be a great therapy dog. We are very impressed with the folks at PUP. All dogs available for adoption are neutered, had their shots, and a physical exam. They also spend time in a foster home so information on the dog's temperment, how well it does with other dogs & cats in the house as well as young children is available prior to adoption. For the longest time I've been trying to get a pit bull and when I was finally able to, I fell in love with a 3 month pit bull mix named Jelly and I wasn't even considered because the foster mom wanted to adopt her. First, I was asked to apply to adopt her. Then, I was told I couldn't adopt her because the foster family was. Not only is this unfair, it's immoral and it's not right. Not just to the potential adopters, but to the animals as well. I feel sorry for all the dogs who cannot be put in good homes because of this organization. I was picking up some pet supplies when I saw this tiny little fur ball. I was not looking for another dog but something about this sweet girl made me stop. I spoke with a very helpful volunteer and filled out the paperwork. The dog I was interested in was popular and there was an enormous stack of applications. I was delighted when I was informed that she was mine pending a home check and meet and greet with my household. The home check went great and the little girl was my new fur baby. I contacted PUP by email about a cat I saw on their website. I was told to complete the pre-adoption form which I did. When they approved my husband and me, we set up an appointment to meet the cat who was in a foster home. Since PUP doesn't have its own facility, they arranged a meeting at the Mud Bay store in Issaquah. I assumed there would be a separate area in the store where we could meet the cat and spend some time with her. I was wrong. The foster "parent" arrived with the cat in a carrier and a PUP employee arrived, and after a few minutes of talking, the PUP employee said "Let's head to the bathroom." Next thing I knew the four of us were in a small bathroom with one toilet and sink where they let out the cat. The cat was only about a year old, was extremely frightened, and ended up huddled in the bathroom sink, the only safe spot she could find. I picked her up and comforted her, but there was no where to sit with her and try to get to know her. I couldn't believe I was in a public bathroom with possible store patrons waiting to get in and now being pressured to make my decision about adopting the cat. The foster parent and PUP employee excused themselves and left the bathroom to let us talk and make our decision. I guess we took too long because the PUP employee came back in and said that since we didn't seem ready she was going to make the decision for us and ordered me to put the cat back in the carrier. I felt guilty about taking too long to decide and about feeling uncomfortable in the public bathroom trying to get to know this cat who was so frightened. My husband and I left and said we would let them know in a day or so, but when I got home, I realized how bizarre and traumatic for us this meeting had been, yet it seemed "normal" procedure for the PUP employee. She had even closed the toilet lid when we got in the bathroom and said that she hated when the cats went over to the toilet and hid behind it. A day later, Trish from PUP emailed me to say that they had made the decision that we weren't a good fit because we were still grieving from the loss of our 18 year old cat a month before our meeting. When I emailed back and told Trish about how uncomfortable we had been with our bathroom meeting with the cat, she dismissed our concern, saying they had to keep the cats safe and that was the only way to do it, even though I had made some suggestions about how other pet stores handle adoption areas. I tried to give them honest feedback, but since there was no empathy with us as the customers, I am leaving this review so other people looking for cats with PUP will know that they will end up trying to get to know an animal in a small public bathroom in Mud Bay. I also wonder what the King County Health Department would do if they knew the bathroom was being used for these pet meetings. If you want a positive pet adoption experience, I would highly recommend Homeward Pet in Woodinville. They have caring staff and a welcoming environment for bringing together pets and their new owners. read more

These people are very unprofessional. After filling out an application and initiating contact to discuss some of the requirements for adopting one of their pups, they adopted it to someone else without saying a word about it to me. Instead they had me calling around to retrieve vet records for my current dog to fulfill their requirements. On top of all of that, they require that ALL animals in your house be altered prior to adopting you a pup, even though they indicate that the pup you will adopt is altered. Be that as it may, it is a bit shady to lead someone to believe that they are adopting a pup and have them calling all over town to get records etc just to adopt it out from underneath you anyway. Being from a law firm, I am going to investigate this 501 (c) (3) a little more thoroughly, as you should prior to supporting them, and I will post my findings for you to review. read more

Tried to do an adoption with this organization. I submitted the application, they contacted my vet and received a good history according to Trish, they requested my utility bill to verify my address which I provided. She then wanted previous vet contacts and details on my cat that went missing a year ago. 15 emails back and forth later that informed me that they would let me know if I was chosen to meet in person? Trish would not speak with me prior to being chosen for a "meet" other than in email. She said I could watch the status and if the pet was adopted that's how I would know. I asked if they would inform me if I was eligible for any pet and no reply. I have adopted many animals in need from various shelters, whisker city, Paws and Homeward pet and never had a problem. Of course I have had to do the typical background for adopting as we all should, but this was extreme and then I was left hanging and told I was not to be notified. I thought the whole point was to help animals in need? Most ridiculous waste of time EVER! Very disappointing. read more
