I'd never been there, but they had the fastest appointment. They said my old partial couldn't be repaired and I needed a new one. What followed was a nightmare: Waited 4 weeks for the new partial. It broke 3 days after I got it. Waited another 3 weeks for a repair. That broke 2 weeks later. Waited another 3 weeks for the next repair. That one lasted 6 months. After the first break, I babied these partials and only wore them when absolutely necessary. Still broke again after a year. When it broke, they pitched me a second partial as a "backup" so I wouldn't be toothless for weeks during repairs. The quality issues alone are unacceptable. Billing was just as bad. I was never given one correct quote during multiple visits. I was told I'd owe way more than I actually did, then later given repair quotes that cost almost as much as a new partial. My insurance says my copay for repairs is $10. I've paid for these repairs before. The woman at the front desk, who I assume is the office manager based on how she acts, was rude, condescending, and unable to work with insurance to get correct pricing. A couple of the dental assistants were cool, but most everyone else there seems to care about the all mighty dollar, not patients. If you value your time, money, and sanity, stay away from Gentle Dental, especially this location!

I also had a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 Jun for the permanent crown placement. The following day, I had a root canal completed by the endodontist, and that experience went great. On 19 May, my temporary crown broke. I left an after hours message with Surprise Smiles and received a return call the next day. Instead of helping repair the crown as I had originally been told, I was simply reminded that I already had an appointment on 1 Jun. I explained that I was in a significant amount of pain and was then told to contact the endodontist. You do not need a dental background to know what the answer was going to be, but I still reached out to the endodontist anyway. They told me they do not do crowns and that I needed to contact the dentist who placed it. I have since contacted the VA and cancelled all additional care through Surprise Smiles. What shocked me most was how quickly responsibility was passed off instead of trying to help a patient who was in pain.

She thoroughly explained every step of the appointment, was very friendly and personable, and consistently checked to make sure I was comfortable and not experiencing any pain or discomfort. When the dentist came in, the hygienist provided a very thorough update on everything we had discussed and completed up to that point. After the exam, the dentist clearly explained what to expect moving forward. This was by far the most thorough and pleasant experience I have ever had at a dental office. I made an appointment for a cleaning and to follow up about a crown that was suggested by Dr. Smith…read morewho owned the practice prior to selling it to Dr. Tobon. My last cleaning and exam was 9 months ago and they did bite-wing X-rays. The first thing I was told by the hygienist, was that they needed to give me full mouth X-rays. I said I didn't want to do that if my insurance didn't cover it and I really don't want to be exposed to X-rays unnecessarily. Dr. Tobon was obviously either being flagged down by the hygienist or was listening and came in to discuss it. Upon entering the room, he introduced himself and began by saying, "this is my dental practice. I bought it and I own it now and I understand you have some questions." I explained my concerns and then, in a condescending tone and speaking to me like Mr. Rogers does to a child, said that he likes to take X-rays every 6 months. He started telling me stories of how they could miss a cavity and tried to relate stories of the past where people suffered mightily by not having cavities detected. I explained that I haven't had a cavity in 25 years and I would agree to the X-rays if my insurance covered it but I didn't want to do them more than once per year. I further explained that I was being treated for skin cancer and although it's not related, more X-rays instead of less X-rays was not something I wanted. He then went into a long diatribe about how he cares about his patients and was a veteran and other irrelevant information that was supposed to have me let him do whatever he wanted because he is a good guy. He said things like, "I am the professional here." and "We need to have a trust with each other and allow me to do the things I deem necessary because I care about my patients." Further, he was saying if insurance wouldn't cover it, that he would "work with me", as if he wanted me to be put on a payment plan or something to pay for non-covered procedures. Without knowing my situation, background or circumstances, the implication was that I couldn't afford to pay and not that it might be a principle issue of doing no more than what my insurance plan covers or a genuine concern of X-ray exposure. Honestly, he came across as a used car salesman who was trying to get me to succumb to his pushy tactics by making it some melodramatic "trust" issue while basically talking down to me because he is a dentist. (I guess he doesn't get that some people might have more advanced degrees than him) He said "If you think there might be a trust issue between us, maybe you should consider another dentist." Tired of trying to simply get my cleaning, exam, bite wings and the discussion of my crown done, I got up and left. My impression is that he tries to scare people to into procedures and has no understanding of empathy because he is a business owner more than he is a medical professional (as shown by the way he introduced himself).

He chose not to call, prompting me to write this review. As part of my visit on 9/24, before the cleaning I specifically went there for, the dental assistant performed a gum charting exercise (if not familiar, it's an easy Google lookup to describe what the charting numbers mean). For each tooth, she read out to her assistant 4s and 5s. A 12 year old failing implant had a much higher reading I'm sure was accurate. Dr. Noll told me I need a deep-cleaning to the tune of approximately $600...I subsequently saw my periodontist a few days later to evaluate the old implant. He performed another charting that revealed 2s and 3s. I then asked if I'd benefit from a deep cleaning, and I guess because of professional courtesies between doctors, he reluctantly told me I won't benefit from the procedure. It was the difference between what I was told at this appointment and what my periodontist said that led me to move on.
