While driving north on the 99 I hit something on the road and immediately heard the scraping noise of my oil pan cover. I pulled off the freeway and went to the closest auto repair business. NICK MARTINEZ was the manager on duty and in less than 10 minutes he lifted my car , verified that pan cover was loose and removed it. No CHARGE! This afternoon, I walked into pepboys service. There were no customers waiting at desk but two guys on the phone. I waited Patiently. After 5 minutes goes by and a few phone calls for parts. I was kinda greater by "Dan" older gentlemen, with a bad attitude, he asked me what I needed and said "yeah, I guess we can get to you but it's going to be a while" I had no idea there was a waiting area after 10 Minutes of standing I found it. 20 minutes later I was still not checked in or anything. Pep Boys told me both fluids were in good condition and saved my a good sum of money. Today the general manager helped me replace my windshield wipers. She was pleasant, helpful and very engaging. I'm glad I did as the rep that helped me (Chase) was awesome! He was very helpful and friendly! I call early morning an explain that I need to check my battery an if needed I'll need to replace it , the guy was really nice an told me to bring it in , I told him it be around 7pm after work he said it was okay . I brought my car in at 645pm an the guy that came to my car was rude , he said what did I need an I explain to him an he said " well we can look but I can't do anything about it I'm too busy! I told him I call in the morning an he said doesn't matter I believe the guy is a manager he was wearing a white collar shirt while the other guys wore a blueish color shirt . Don't take your vehicle here if you value it longevity. Tried to overcharge me for a service. Still fighting for a refund after they drained the Freon from my vehicle and, told me it had a leak. I took it to an actual mechanic shop. Had my AC tested and, was then told that there was no leak detected and, that shop charged my AC and it's been working perfectly ever since. Went in for a basic oil change, rotation and just a quick check on the brakes. No issues with them, just wanted to see how they were. The district manager happened to be there that day, according to the employees, but he was probably the rudest person I've met in a long time. Yelp won't let me post his name so I'll just say he's CZ. He was rude to another customer who was concerned about the amount of time their service was taking (over 2 hours for 2 tires and an oil change) and his employees about how they should be working off the clock on their lunches and he'd just "fix it later" for them, whatever that means. Anyway for my service, they said that I needed new brakes, even though I knew the ones I had were good. Apparently they forgot that I had no issues with the brakes, just wanted a quick check to make sure they were still seated right and wearing evenly, so they tried explaining the noise and vibration I was complaining about were due to the brakes. I didn't have any noise or vibrations. At this point the area director chimes in, using indirect scare tactics, more or less saying that if I don't change my brakes, then I'm putting my family and other people in danger. This is incredibly unethical and rude. I ask how much that will cost, so they work up a price that's over $1500. They called a part supplier (the name I can't put because Yelp will not allow it) which is abbreviated as AZ, and told me a price. I called AZ and they gave me a significantly lower price for the parts than Pepboys. Pepboys more than doubles the cost, just in parts. Their labor rates are also crazy high compared to the market. Safe to say, I declined the services, took it to a different shop to verify they even put the brakes back on right, and was shown that the pads were put on backwards and still had 80% of the life with no groves or anything wrong with the rotors. They tried to rip me off and scare me into buying things I didn't need. I recommend going almost anywhere else. At least until they get a new Area Director who isn't trying to con people. read more

I was driving back to So Ca with my wife and family when my 2002 Chevy Suburban stopped running and left us stranded on the 5 near Bakersfield. I had our car towed to the Pep Boys located at 4605 planz Rd in Bakersfield. Josh, Hunter, and Service Manager Benino treated very well and diagnosing my battery for free which had a cell burnt out, which was still under warranty from Samsclub. Came here for an oil change and had made my appt at 1. When I came in I was ignored for 10 min even though the guy was just sitting at the computer. Not even a "hello" or "be right there". When I had called earlier they said the oil change would be 45 min but when I got there they said it was going to be an hour and a half. Also, over there phone the price was $55 but then again they changed that and it was now going to be $85. Their attitude also stinks. Never coming here again. read more

I am very angry at this establishment. I bring my truck for an oil change and power steering flush..... I made an online appointment at noon and was here 10mins early. The guy at the counter said about an hour. Its now 1:45 and I had to go ask what was going on because 90% of their staff went to lunch and I was seeing people (cars in parking lot) who came way after me being brought into the bays for tire changes etc. I understand if the service would take more than an hour if it were in the bay... but it had not even left the parking lot 1.45hrs later. They are really thorough in their assessment of vehicles. They are also honest, if they cannot do the work, they will let you know without you having to spend your money. The store was clean and neat, easy to navigate and find what you need. The staff are very helpful and encouraging. They will also let you know if the issue with your vehicle is too much for them to handle, and offer suggestions to where you may need to go. The waiting area is small and uncomfortable. I brought my car in to have the battery replaced today. All seemed good, and we were told about 1 1/2 hours. My husband and I decided to run errands instead of wait. We drove back by in about an hour. It appeared as though they were working on it then, so we didn't stop. We went to have lunch, and were expecting the call that it was ready. After lunch we went back to find my car on a lift with all 4 tires removed. When I asked why my car was on a lift, they said they were doing the brake inspection. I told them I didn't ask for a brake inspection. I only wanted the battery replaced. Not one person knew how a brake inspection was added. Then, I was told it was free, and they would put my car back together, and get the battery done right away. They said they were waiting for the battery to be delivered. I asked why it needed to be delivered when I was told it was in stock. They told me the parts department had to bring it up. Ok.... We took a short walk through the shopping center, and arrived back with my car parked outside. We were told the battery was done, before they started the brake inspection. I am aggravated that I brought my car in for one thing, and liberty was taken to do more than requested. I understand the need to earn more business. I don't understand why I wasn't asked. Integrity is important. I wonder... if I had waited for their call, how many unnecessary and unrequested inspections would have been done? read more

There computers were "running slow" after we checked it asked how long he thought it would take. Planze Rd must not not want to work. My husband and I took a 2000 Toyota 4Runner here and had the worst experience ever. The reason why we went here is because my in-laws go here all the time and it was close to our house so that my husband could just walk home. He specifically told them that all we wanted was the timing belt done. They came back with "Well we have to take off the water pump to get to the belt so we might as well replace that for you too." He kindly refused and restated all that he wanted was the belt. Later that afternoon, they called him to come in. Upon his arrival, they said that the water pump was broken (all of a sudden, hmmm) and the job was now DOUBLE what they originally quoted because the pump was broken. Due to the fact that the vehicle was already taken apart, we ended up having to eat a $733 bill. It seems like these guys are more concerned about how much money they can get out of people instead of concerned about taking care of the customers actual needs. We have never stepped foot into another Pep Boys location because of this and warn people away from them. read more

As a regular purchasing customer for years (averaging $200-500 a month), I recently used the service center for the first time...horrible experience. Went in for a trailer hitch install (direct-fit bolt-on)...a job I could've done easily myself but the service center said they would would install it for $50 so i figured what the hell, made an appointment for 12:00 noon the following day to install the hitch and diagnose warm a/c. Arrived on time for my appointment (12:00), the guy at the counter estimated 1.5 hours. I went for a short walk to the store while i waited...returned about an hour later...I noticed my car was still in the parking lot (they hadn't even started it.) As I went inside the technician finally pulled the car in, after another 2 hours the car was "done." I should note that the only reason I knew it was done was because the car was parked outside the garage and I asked (It sat there for about 15 minutes and they never informed me it was done). Now the A/C....the short version is that the manager told me the compressor was out...which I had suspected, he then told me it would be $1300 to replace it, as a mechanic myself I knew this was a load of crap. (It has since been repaired by another shop for $750, including going through my blower motor and servicing it) So fine...my car is done, right? I can finally get out of here....WRONG. I got into my car to find that the trailer wiring was sitting on my passenger seat still packaged... which the manager assured me was meant to be included in the install. I walk back inside and tell the manager, he tells the technician to wire it up...the tech proceeds to audibly and visibly (for lack of a better phrase) 'throw a fit', in full view of myself. He then snatches the package from the manager, spends another 30 minutes or so installing it, and I finally got to leave. I spent a grand total of just over FIVE HOURS waiting for a job (an APPOINTMENT) that was meant to take an hour and a half. If you're looking to buy parts, specifically speed shop stuff, this is definitely your place, Cecil and the parts/general managers are great, but don't even think about using the service center. Everyone in there has no business in the service industry, with the exception of one of the techs named Jory who was nothing but professional and polite. read more

This was the 2nd time i had to deal with the aftermath of this shop's services that were performed (I assume) Incorrectly or without any kind of attention. Very very disappointed and will be contacting corporate office. Brought my car in for an oil change and wheel alignment. Came back hours later and picked up. 3 weeks later a friend notices my driver rear tire is tilted inward quite a bit and dangerously worn in the Inside. I advised i just had an alignment and this cannot be so. I confirmed with 2 tire shops that this is due to alignment issue and suggested I replace the damaged tire right away. I agreed and ended up having to replace all 4 tires due to uneven wear. I looked at receipt from alignment and confirmed in small print there was a 60 day workmanship warranty. I took pictures of the damaged tires and brought to pepboys as soon as I had new tires put on. I advised the manager what was going on and he offered to redo the alignment under warranty... (duh). I asked about reimbursement to some degree for the now new tires i had to get BECAUSE of their faulty and dangerous alignment. He advised they would not and pointed our MY tires were marked with "moderate wear" already in the "tread depth" section if the oil change/ inspection check off paper. Why did pep boys not advise me of a dangerous tread depth or even offer me a quote for new tires If that was the case???? The degree of that rear tire alone was off by almost 20 degrees....it was SIGNIFICANT . When I asked them how this could have been overlooked or not done previously the answer I got was " I'm not sure. The tech who performed the last time is not here. I mean I would like to believe we are pretty thorough and dont make mistakes, but I can't speak for other employees in their absense". Can we also discuss the amount of unprofessional conversation behind the counter or as they step just outside into the garage area??? Not cool with me. Will never never back here and suggest y'all avoid as well. read more

My car overheated while going through Bakersfield and I had no choice but to bring it here to get it checked out. I had to cruise the car inch by inch into the parking lot because every time I gave it a tiny amount of gas, it violently shook and sounded like it was about to explode. So although I'm no car expert, I knew something was seriously wrong. They looked at it the next day, and said they couldn't get it to overheat and thought the issue had resolved itself. I asked if they'd actually tried putting it on the road, because I was flabbergasted that there seemed to be no problem whatsoever after what I'd experienced. They insisted they drove it around the block and couldn't find any issues, but that they would have a "specialist" look at it again the following day to be sure. They called me back saying a second technician had done everything he possibly could to get the car to overheat, and found absolutely nothing wrong. He said it probably overheated because "Bakersfield has a hot climate." The car was supposedly fine to be picked up with no repairs needed. Since I'm not from Bakersfield, I had to call a friend in the area (a mechanic himself) to go get the car and hang onto it for me, and BIG SURPRISE... as soon as he drove off the lot, the car overheated and was not drive-able. My friend had it towed to another shop, which just quoted me $1100 in repairs. So in the end, this Pep Boys did nothing but store my car for a few days and give me false hope that my car problems were simply due to the unfortunate fact that I had to drive through town at the hottest time of year. read more
