First off the people that work there were great. Unfortunately PepBoys just doesn't care about them or the customer. You have a website I ordered tires and set appointment time for 4pm. Website and store don't mesh. LITERALLY was there for three hours before the ONE great mechanic that works there got to my car. Classic bait and switch experience. I needed two tires and decided to do my research before purchasing. While visiting family, I noticed the Pep Boys location in my town listed the tires I wanted as in stock online, so I booked an appointment. Upon arriving, the woman at the desk informed me, rather rudely, that they didn't carry the tires in-store despite what their website showed. She added, "You should've called," which felt dismissive and unhelpful. While I understand online systems may not always be accurate, it's reasonable to expect a chain store to provide updates or clarify stock availability before the appointment, especially when booking online. She then tried to upsell me on different tires. When I declined, she began arguing about pricing, claiming I was "doing the math wrong" when I explained the sale versus original price for the tires I initially wanted. Frustrated, I left and called another Pep Boys location. I spoke with Louis, who was apologetic and offered to order the tires from their warehouse. While I appreciated his willingness to help, I was confused as to why the website advertised in-stock tires that needed to be ordered. Regardless, I placed the order and was told the tires would arrive in about a week. One week passed with no update, so I called. The employee I spoke with said they'd check on the shipment and assured me the tires would arrive that day or the following Monday. However, I received a call on Saturday night about an "appointment" they couldn't accommodate due to being busy. This was baffling, as I hadn't scheduled an appointment--I was still waiting for confirmation that the tires had even arrived. After explaining the situation, I was placed on hold for almost 30 minutes. When they finally got Louis on the line, the conversation became even more confusing. Louis claimed they'd seen my tires in the shipment but then suggested they "hook me up with better tires at a good price" instead of locating the ones I ordered. This made no sense--if the tires I paid for were in the building, why not just give me what I ordered? By this point, the process had dragged on for over a week, and I felt like I was being strung along. I have been coming to the East Brunswick store for over 20 years and know all the service reps and techs. The Larry is no longer the manager and it shows. I arrived @8:20 for my 8:30 appointment and was checking in. Just as I finished another customer came in and also checked in after me. At 9:00 am my car still wasn't brought in and when I questioned the service advisor when would i be taken in he informed me that "it's going to be awhile". Seems that they decided to bring in the guy who was 20 mins late for his appointment while I was on time. The manager told me that he only had 1 employee yet I noticed 3 or more techs wandering in and out of the waiting area. I took back my keys and left. If I can give no stars I would, no point in scheduling appointments because you end up waiting around for hours anyway. Customer service is beyond horrible, a bunch of miserable mechanics with attitudes sitting around one computer not giving any updates to the people waiting. Oz and Damion were the kindest and most helpful young men I have ever met!! I stopped in frantic about a tire that was loosing air quickly. I had stopped by 3 other places but no one wanted to come out in rain! They both met me out back and were genuinely concerned about me getting home safely. They even explained the situation over the phone to my husband. They refused a tip! They gave me tips on how to get home and even directions. My car battery died in sudden & spectacular fashion. A kind stranger jumped my car and warned me if I shut off my engine my car would not start again. Sunday morning @9 am as soon as Pep Boys opened I called to see if they could install a new battery immediately. Jay answered the phone, reassured me that they will take care of it and was waiting for me with a new battery when I arrived. I received a text with a link to the status of the installation. They were fair, polite, competent and overall made what could have been a harrowing experience, into a minor inconvenience. I'm truly grateful for their excellent customer service. read more

I don't usually give out 1 star reviews unless it is truly deserved. I am a very accommodating and easy to please customer so for me to give this rating, it really means something . I do not like coming to Pep Boys. I have not been back for a really long time, but this time it was out of emergency and desperation. The job I requested was not difficult or complicated. Typical shops like Sam's Club and Costco would get it done within an hour. Here the rep promised a job completion time of an hour but it took the crew 3. I even made a note to the rep that I was in a rush, and he brushed me off. The reason why I stopped coming here is because this place just takes too damn long for the simplest jobs and the time estimated to do them are way off. The rep was also incredibly unapologetic that I waited 3 hours. What bothered me the most was the sneering comment he made towards me, saying that the wait was not bad because I was having fun playing on my phone. I was speechless, this was exactly how I imagined spending my Saturday, playing on my phone for 3hrs at Pep Boys while waiting for my car to get fixed. This store is heading down hill and fast. I went to visit the brand new Auto zone on Rt 18 on Friday, they are fired up and ready to take pep boys out. If you don't listen to your customer's your business at this location is going to suffer. I had the privileges of meeting and talking to one of the managers at this location. I saw his picture on the wall, I don't know if he is the store manager or acting manager. I was not impressed with the way he handled the situation. I bought a Code Reader and the software that came with that code reader was not compatible with a mac laptop. I do not own a windows based PC. I explained to the cashier which was rude and didn't even let me finish a sentence. I didn't want my money back, I just want one that is compatible. Shame on me for not reading it, but why can't you listen to your customers. I left the store after being denied a return from that very same store manager, on a brand new item. I called the home office and spoke to someone, he was back on the phone the same day, but why does it have to get to that point? But, what really bothers me even more is when you get me on the phone to tell me, I ultimately can still deny you. They just ask me to call you. Why would you even say that? Because you think I'm trying to get over on your store and you clearly want to let me know if I encounter another denial, you'll have every right to still deny me. So, I emailed the company which makes the product, I asked if their software would ever be compatible and they told me, at this time, the product I had was not compatible. I had to print that email and bring it into the store to show the store manager I wasn't lying. I do all my tire changes and buy all my supplies from pep boys and have done so for many years. Always horrible wait times, I've used this place exclusively for our fleet truck because it's close and it's the same song every time. There is a car in front of you or the mechanic didn't look at it yet. Here was a run down of my latest experience at this place. Went to start my truck on Thursday 7/19/18 at 6:30am. It stumbled at idle and would shut off after 10 seconds of stumbling. I got my scanner out and ran codes, based on the code I thought it was Maf sensor. I called our fleet provider and they sent a tow truck to take it to our local repair facility which is this east Brunswick. Truck arrived there at 9am as per the tow truck driver. I get a call from pep boys at 9:20am asking me what's going on with the truck. I tell them what happened and what I thought was wrong. So far so good can't complain one bit. I decide to call back at noon the same day to see if they found anything. I was told no one looked at it yet. I call back at 2pm same story, call back at 5:45pm same story but this time I'm told there are cars in front of mine. Hmm at this point I'm thinking it's been there since 9am but there are cars in front of mine still? Sounds like bs again but whatever they said they will call me in 20mins because they master mechanic is going to look at it? Wow the master mechanic now we are serious here. If I were to hold my breathe on that promise I would have died because you guessed it no one called me back. For a last ditch effort I called at 8:45pm which is 15 mins before they close to see if anyone ever looked at my truck. The assistant service manager (some woman didn't get her name) said of yeah we have the parts but when we tried to call the fleet company for approval no one answered. Well that's kind of easy people don't work in later hours of the night when you finally decide to look at a vehicle you've add all morning and day long. So at this point I'm angry as you can imagine but it gets better. Friday 7/20/18 I call pep boys at 10:30am to see that they were able to get in contact with the fleet company. A different assistant service manager answers and says he still needs to put the parts in the computer before they get them approved. Wait what? I was told the night before all that was done but it was too late to get anyone on the phone, now I'm being told they still need to write the job up? Ok so at this point my confidence is right up there for pep boys east Brunswick. I call back at 2pm and told they finally got approval but the master mechanic works the second shift and only arrived at 1pm but it should be done by 6pm today. Alright finally some good news the truck might actually be done today. But wait don't get those hopes up too soon 6pm rolls around and bam service manager says when I call again "oh sorry the master mechanic had to leave early today the truck won't be done". Disappointment is an understatement but I've come to realize this is the result from this place. Saturday rolls around 7/21/18 at this point I don't even want to call all day long I don't even think about the truck than it dawns on me around 5pm wait my truck is still at pep boys probably sitting there collecting dust. After talking the the service manager on the phone they truck was finally done. Praise baby Jesus there was a miracle the truck was done. I hitch a ride there to pickup the truck but there is a problem. My gas card and fleet card are missing from my truck? After looking high and low I find it shoved under papers in a clear plastic holder on their desk. At least that had a happy ending or so I thought. As I waited to get my truck from the back where they parked it I had to wait as a tow truck was dropping off a car but it was super close to my truck where I couldn't pull out and had to wait for it to finish. I didn't think anything of it but the following day I look at my wheel that was on the side of the tow truck and it looks like they gouged a 4" chunk of rubber out of my front tire right down to the belts. So instead of the ordeal being over I had to spend my Sunday changing the truck tire with the spare. In the end if you want a company that doesn't communicate, doesn't keep deadlines, takes forever to do easy jobs, lies to your face, and damages your car this is the place for you. 7/23/2018 after one day I'm now getting an error code of my that the Egr circuit is bad? This part was just replaced on Saturday. P0403 I cleared the code 4 times with my scanner and it keeps coming back meaning it's not working right, I seriously want this ordeal to be over already. Looks like another trip back to pep boys to fix this hopefully since it didn't work the first time. 7/24/2018 dropped the truck off again at 8am, service manger was very nice and apologetic. Went to have them do rear brakes(rotors and pads). I usually do brakes myself but it was cold and I was sick. Was sold a warranty that I didn't ask for nor was it explained to me. Returned to the store to be credited back $35 for that. It's against federal law to charge a consumer for a warranty unknowing . Then started hearing a squealing sound in reverse and realized the pads were barely contacting the rotor on one side. Went back and was told the caliper was sticking. I find it strange that there was no uneven wear or sounds before they did the brakes but after there were issues and suddenly my caliper is bad? I'm wondering what they used to compress the piston. Doing so unevenly would score the piston and damage it. After bringing it back second time when I picked it up they changed story to it seems to be working fine now. After driving a few days it's clear the same issue exists. I would not recommend this store to anyone. read more

Garbage service, I asked for a diagnostic and all they had done was let me know of my check engine light. They said it was recommended that I received a certain service in order to repair my misfire. I gave them what they wanted and they returned my car to me the exact way it was before and even worse at that. I spoke with an associate who initially gave me a bad attitude from the jump and he told me to call back tomorrow for the store manager. When I had spoken to the manager I received the same rude trashy attitude and was offered or get the job redone, no not for free, for the same price I initially had paid. Terrible service. read more

I have spent SO MUCH MONEY in this place, and somehow, there's always an issue with my service one way or another: be it 2-3 hour wait time for an oil change or tire change; technicians failing to reset my oil sensor even after I ask them; breaks squeaking about a week after I have them completely replaced- pads- roters- everything; or failing to replace fluids during an oil change. Well, today left me with no words for the disgust that I feel for this company, and particularly this location. I came in to have a tire replaced, a tail light replaced, and an oil change. I had a premonition that I wasn't leaving without spending at least $300. Of course, the thieves told me my tread was dangerously low and that I shouldn't even drive home without replacing all 4 tires for around $800. No. Not doing it- I settled for 2 tires and the tail light and oil change. It was done in about an hour and a half, not bad time with their track record. I get out to my car and a plastic and metal part on the side of my seat is completely broken. IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN!! I have no reason to spend so much time and effort lying about a part being broken that wasn't broken in the first place, which is what the manager is still insinuating- that it was brought in that way. He came out to my car to check it, we went back and forth, and he told me he was offering to fix it. I gave him the keys and said, "Then here, fix it!" Meanwhile, I called the customer service line to file a formal complaint. After I'm off the phone and step back inside, I peeked through the service window and saw my trunk was open. I approached the manager and asked, "Can you tell me why my trunk would be open if he's supposed to be fixing my seat?" The manager replied, "He forgot to fix your tail light." Wait- the tail light I paid for, the tail light that was broken and still would be broken if the technician hadn't damaged my seat. I threw my arms up, as if to say "of course" and paced back and forth in my infuriation. The manager called me over, told me he had to order a part for my seat which was around $60, and replace it with labor- a job that would total over $375, normally. I questioned his quote, and he reassured me. I said, "you don't expect me to pay for this, right?" At first he said he'd work with me, and I argued. I mentioned the tail light faux pas, and he said he would "absorb the cost." Yeah- you better absorb the cost because YOUR technician broke my seat. STRESS... That is what to expect when you come to Pep Boys. Another 3 hours logged today, and IF the part comes in tomorrow for my seat, god only knows how many other countless hours of my life will be wasted in this establishment. I've always been a fan of Pep Boys. Typically you can expect quick service at reasonable prices for all basic maintenance like tires and oil changes including parts up the wazoo. When you deal with a chain, any chain there's usually a protocol that's followed to a robotic text, kinda like CK's favorite dance move. One exactly like another. Sorry sir, but we don't do things that way here or well that's our procedure as per corporate. This particular branch exceeded my expectations in a big way. So my story begins with a noticeable nail in my cars tire which I happened to notice at 8:15 pm. Oh no! Where to get help by the time before I reach a garage before the a flat develops? Ahh, Pep Boys is open to 9pm, but I'll be very close to closing time when I get there. Oh heck, go anyway I thought and proceeded. As soon as I arrived 8:35p, I knew I'd need to speak to a manager especially due to the line in the waiting room, aughh. Warren the retail mgr. without question brought me over to Andres the service advisor who gladly prepared my order to plug the tire. Low and behold, the tire was damaged and couldn't be plugged. Now I faced the wallet draining need to buy a new tire. Or do I? Andres quickly checks my history records discovering I have a tire protection plan ( I wipe sweat from my eye brow) and it's covered, yeah bady! So as a chain most locations must handle situations in similar fashion to a point. But, rest assure that service at this location is pretty good for your basic car parts and minor repairs. read more

About a month ago, we brought our car in because it was overheating. They had our vehicle for five days. Three times they told us they "ordered the wrong part." They never actually called us to let us know this - each day we had to call numerous times to find out what was going on with the car. After a final irate phonecall demanding they reimburse us for the cost of a rental car, they agreed to cut our $700 bill in half - to $350. Finally, we picked up the car, and lo and behold - still overheating, as if they had never touched it. We brought it back and the manager explained that the mechanic who fixed our car never bothered to test the vehicle to make sure that the repairs actually fixed the issue, and that he was "no longer with the company." They replaced whatever they thought was wrong, at no charge. And now, less than a month later, my husband is waiting for AAA on the side of the Turnpike because the car... you guessed it... overheated. I would avoid this establishment except in the case of a dire emergency - and even then, I'd do anything I could to go elsewhere. read more

I've always come here for minor work, and I never worry about how long it takes to wait for the car because I live so close that I can always go home and come back when it's ready. But I noticed that in general the staff here have some kind of attitude. Not sure if they're tired from a long day, or the younger guys are a little rough around the edges, or they think they are "Gods" because they are the ones to fix a car for people. Doesn't hurt to be kind of pleasant, rather than gruff and abrupt. Firestone are efficient and get the job done, but when they are asking you questions about the car, their general tone and demeanor are friendlier. You don't feel like an inconvenience to them. Especially when you're the one paying them! Prices are in line with all car chains -- more expensive than a small garage, and they find a way to give you a laundry list of "scary" issues that you must pay to repair ASAP. read more

I'm updating my review on 5/24. I came in last week To get my AC fixed. They looked at the car and told me that I needed a new condenser, new brake pads and rotors. They needed to order the part so I had to come back. I came back last night and they had no record of what needed to be done to my car. They never ordered the part. The guy said that he'll look at the car again to see what needs to be done. They checked again and I DIDN'T need a new condenser. I DIDN'T need new brake pads. I DIDN'T need it rotors. JOB: I brought in a separate set of 17" wheels to have new tires put on but asked if they can swap the new wheels on after the tires are put on. Leaving my 16" stock wheels/tires alone. I scheduled my tire replacement appointment for 11 am on Friday 17th, but I took my car in around 10 am because Larry (service manager) told me the tires will be in around noon. So I'd figure I leave the car and give them a headstart once the tires arrive. The whole day goes by, at 5:05 pm I got a call on my way to pick up the car, they left me a voicemail saying they can't get one of the lug nuts off. So when I got to the store, I was explained that one of the lug nuts was spinning and it would be $113 to get it off. I respectfully declined the service and asked the tech (HASS) to put my stock wheels back on. He gave me a confused look and said, how can you put tires on if I can't get the wheels off. Then I explained, no I gave you a separate set of wheels for the new tires, I did not want tires on my existing wheels. This is when I found out, they had taken 2 of the tires off my existing wheels. At this point, I just told them to put my wheels back on and we'll be done, so after 2 hours of waiting at the store, and literally almost 8 hours total to put on 4 tires. I was tired and hungry. When I got home, I realized all of my valve stem caps are missing on my 17" wheels, and also the two of my stock wheels are missing the valve stem caps. What's worse is when I tried to take off the lug nuts, they cross threaded the nuts on the stud so it literally broke off. And when I went back to the store and spoke to Jorge Perez, he told me he did not break them, and they ALWAYS torque their wheels. Look this is not my first car, if you torqued all the wheels, then it should be all the same amount of lb/ft per nut. Why was I able to take off 3 nuts easily and the last one it took so much force that it literally broke off. It was clearly cross threaded! Jorge was only willing to replace my 6 missing valve steam caps and wanted to charge me $63 to replace my broken stud. Not only was Jorge unapologetic, but he was also very arrogant. Talked to me like I knew nothing about cars. When I mentioned I would call corporate, he said "fine, go ahead". Not only that my car was filthy, hand prints all over with oil smudges. I had to use a clay bar because it wouldn't come off after the carwash. On top of all that, my TPMS sensor hasn't worked since, and I was told it would go away but as of today, it's still on. This is not right! If this is how you treat customers cars by losing stuff and overtightening nuts, then it is not a place I would ever go back to nor would I recommend anybody else going there. I have been a rewards member and I have done services there in the past with my previous cars but unless something is done to correct this experience. I will just let everyone know my experience dealing with Pepboys. Good thing this isn't my only car, otherwise I'd really be in trouble driving around with a broken stud. UPDATE: my wheels started to wobble this morning so I went to Meineke and they told me the geniuses at Pepboys didnt balance the wheels at all, they mounted the tires in the wrong direction...both the front wheel hubs and bearings are destroyed from cross threading. I'm not surprised at anything this place does anymore. They're lucky I'm not sueing them for risking my safety!! read more

In the high summer heat of July I brought my vehicle in to the East Brunswick, NJ branch to get an A/C Evaluation and hopefully a solution to my broken A/C. I received a call from one of your employers telling me that the only issue was a clog and that I would receive a new air filter and a recharge and the service would only cost me $200 - which was a deal! My excitement was soon taken away from me the next day I entered my car. I no longer had A/C and my check engine light came on - I was fuming. I let a couple of days go by to see if the car just needed adjusting and luckily the check engine light turned off however my car was hotter than it was outside. I brought my car back in to the establishment to find out what happened, why my air conditioner wasn't working, and how we can get it to work. After dropping my car off again I received a call from one of your associates during work. I was told that I would need to replace the A/C suction line for $500 because I have a leak, I declined the full service. When I stopped by later to pick up my car I questioned your associate and asked - why wasn't this caught the first time I came in? He simply answered "The leak probably happened after that". I questioned him again "What you are saying is that after you serviced my car something happened and I have a leak now, because when I first came in it was fine," no response. I am sure by now you will understand my frustration with having to pay $500 on top of the $200 I've already paid for, for a service that only guaranteed me misleading results. I would also like to point out that several of the East Brunswick, NJ branch employees of Pep Boys were rude and condescending. One in particular was not nice and he did not help the situation. However there were other employees who were pleasant to do business with so that one person's bad attitude will not tarnish my impression of Pep Boys' employees. I went to Pep Boys because I was under the impression that I would receive great service, but unfortunately I did not. It's a shame that I had to pay $200 of my meager earnings in order to learn a modern fundamental lesson that online reviews are 110% valid. read more

Less than two weeks later car will not start. I am not even going to bother taking it back to Pep Boys. I'll just spend my money elsewhere even if it is their fault. read more

I only take my car to Pep Boys when I'm left with no other options, the other day being one of those days. I had a flat and needed the tire plugged. I was told that they would be able to plug the tire with no problems and it would only take 15 minutes. Half an hour into waiting, a mechanic approaches me and tells me that they are unable to plug the tire due to the positioning of the nail. I told him that I asked prior to them starting the job and they assured me that it wouldn't be a problem, and no surprise, there was a problem. I had to get going to work, so I consented to accepting liability if the plug fails and ended up waiting another 45 minutes for the job to be completed. Overall, it took about and hour and a half. This is just one example of how pep boys always disappoints. The 2 stars are due to the fact that I was able to drive to work that day with the half decent job they did on the plug. read more

Scheduled a service appointment for 10 am. Showed up early and was told it would be about an hour to an hour and a half, I would've the next car in. There were three people waiting. Left and came back after 11:30. My car was still where I left it untouched. I went in to ask and was told that they over book appointments and did not have any bays available. When I told the service rep that I had booked an appointment I was met with a blank stare and offered me aride home and back. I took my keys, my car and my business elsewhere. This was not the first time I was given this excuse. However, I scheduled the service a week in advance. The excuses sounded well rehearsed and obviously they do not care. They deserve zero stars but that is not an option. read more
