Well. So much for being my new " Go to Guys" 12 days after praising their efforts, I talked to Steve in service who promptly told me to take my 1995 Ford Bronco elsewhere. "We'll pass on that" he said. I had my rear tailgate window start to stick. "90% of the time that tailgate window is going to shatter and we're not going to get stuck for a $325.00 window just to make $45.00" he said. "Take it to an auto body place" By the way Steve, the last place put it in for $225.00 labor and window. So $325.0 for a window alone is an off the charts price. My experience at this Pep Boys was EXTREMELY disappointing. I brought my car in at 9 AM for brake work -- and ended up leaving around 5 PM. There was very little communication the entire time, and the staff was extremely unprofessional and paid no attention to me. In addition, after my work was supposedly completed, there was a loud constant beeping and a message on car's dashboard that told me to "STOP" and that my brakes were faulted. I mentioned this to Pep Boys, and they told me it was OK to drive, and to just bring it in within a few days and they will correct the issue (because some sort of scanner was not working). Rather than suggesting an alternative (such as checking with another Pep Boys on a working scanner, they just told me to bring it back in a few days). Not only did they take over eight hours to fix my brakes (not even sure if they are fixed), but they let me drive away with that beeping and messages on my car's dashboard. The guy also mentioned that the car is fine to drive, and that the emergency break just doesn't work right now. Great to know that Pep Boys is ok with people driving cars with faulty emergency brakes. I called and spoke to the manager, and our call got disconnected -- I called back within 10 seconds, and he was now with a a customer, and he never returned my call. I would NEVER recommend this specific Pep Boys to anyone. I spent over $200 for horrible customer service and a staff that allowed me to drive away in an unsafe car. I will be sure to communicate this to Pep Boys corporate, as this was extremely unprofessional and unsafe. Very very very disappointed. Please look into other options in the area, as there are many other auto shops in the vicinity. read more

Since the Bridgestone acquisition of Pep Boys, it seems there have been a lot of great changes. This was my first visit following that acquisition and I found my entire oil change experience to be fantastic! I scheduled my appointment online and the Pep Boys crew was awaiting my arrival. The rep (a US military Vet!) was extremely professional and took the time to listen to my questions regarding some issues I had been experiencing. He suggested some diagnostic checks and followed through with a thorough report. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes and I'd swear my engine now sounds much happier! I normally go back to the dealership for anything greater than routine maintenance. But, after today's experience, I will definitely think about Pep Boys FIRST! Kudos to the Hazlet Pep Boys crew! Regarding other reviews describing the waiting area. The Hazlet Pep Boys waiting area is every bit as good as the local Buick dealership - perhaps a little cleaner! A long story, but got excellent customer service here. Honest car repair is almost as hard to find as honest used car salesmen, but I found it here. I had electrical problems in my car, involving a bad battery I swapped out (with a new battery bought elsewhere) after even jump starting it failed. This led to starting problems and a whole host of warning lights flashing on the dashboard. Pep Boys advised me it would cost $140 to clear out the multiple codes, and repairs depended on what the codes indicated. Seemed a bit high but I was stuck. So they took it in and chased the ghost in the machine for a while. But after a test drive (car ran fine) then stopping and starting the car all the codes cleared themselves. Pep boys then called and, despite having been pre-approved for $140, gave the car back with no charge. They agreed with me it was probably somehow due to the failed jump start and battery swap, but since they didn't actually repair it or clear the codes - and how would I have known that? - they were honest enough to return the car free of charge. read more

I have been a Pep Boys customer for years and am usually happy with the service. Two days ago, I brought my car to the shop to have my rear tire plugged. I was told the wait would be about an hour and they would call me when they were done. I never received a phone call. I called back the next day and asked for an update on the tire. I spoke with Ed who told me that they were not able to plug the tire and I would either need 4 new tires or I could just get that one tire replaced. I also asked why I was never called the day before. Instead of being professional and just apologizing for the oversight, he laughed and asked what cell service carrier I had. The 4 new tires were estimated to cost about $980.00. He stated he would take off $20 for no one calling me. My tires were put on less than a year ago and they were still in very good condition. So, I asked him about the second option to order a matching tire. He stated he had never heard of the brand of tires I had on the car and didn't know where he could find them from, so I should just buy the 4 new tires. He offered to waive a roadside hazard fee which brought the price down to $860. I knew I didn't need 4 new tires, so I took the car to a different mechanic. He also told me that 4 new tires were completely unnecessary and he was able to plug the tire. When I told him what Ed at Pep Boys tried to convince me to do and how much much he tried to convince me to spend, this mechanic was speechless and both of us could not believe how dishonest this establishment is. I will no longer be a customer and will make sure my friends and family know how much Ed and the Hazlet store will try to rip you off. I WISH I COULD GIVE LESS THAN 1 STAR! I went there for them to do my synthetic oil change on my 2012 Audi... So once it was done I picked up my car and left to do my daily errands after paying those clowns $80.00 for the oil change. The following day I got "LOW OIL WARNING" on my dash board which I found extremely odd as I just had an oil change, but I went to auto zone and bought a quart of synthetic to throw in. About 2 days later my dashboard "LOW OIL WARNING" light came back on, so I checked my level and it was low again. I went back to Auto Zone and bought another quart and went about my business. So now by this time I spent $80 on the oil change and $16 on two quarts of synthetic oil. I was on my way to Brooklyn the following Saturday morning when the "LOW OIL WARNING" came on again, luckily for me I was right near BAY RIDGE AUDI so I went to their service Dept to check out my car because in one week I had this light come on several times. The tech at Audi asked me if I had gotten an oil change recently, and I replied yes last weekend actually why? He advised the mechanic didn't fully screw the oil pan bolt back in he only did it half way so it's just been leaking right out the bottom, so I now spent $80 at pepboys, $16 at auto zone, & $ toll money and time wasted all cause the guy didn't reinstall the oil pan bolt. read more

Hazlet group also told me I had to replace 4 tires when I only wanted 2. Said it was the law and they wouldn't put only 2 on. Ended up buying 4. They also told me that my car only takes synthetic oil, which I know not to be the case, but I agreed so they would get my car done. Then, 2 months after I bought the 4 tires, I had a flat. Called to see what the warranty on my tires was. They told me that there was no warranty since I had not purchased it. WHAT???? I told the guy that no one explained that I had no warranty on the product if I did not take out the roadside warranty from Pep Boys. He told me that he sold me the tires and he definitely told me about it. When I said it was not explained that I had no other warranty on the product itself, he rudely insisted that he tells everyone that. Well, he didn't tell me. If I could I would give zero stars ... As a supervisor for a company that has over 50 vehicles in its fleet I can promise you none of them will be brought here for anything. I brought my truck there for a simple oil change and engine diagnostic, I called ahead asked if they had time to get it in today after 3 o'clock ? sure enough it was no problem, fast forward to 830 at night and I'm standing there watching as two employees argue over who is going to have to do it because they apparently forgot about it and no one wanted to have to get it in before closing ... Without much advance notice I desperately needed to have my wife's car serviced! It needed a synthetic LOF, brake pads and rotors all around, a new battery, a toggle switch fixed, and even a flat (and unsalvageable) tire replaced! Called all of my usual contacts, everyone was busy for days! Then I called Service Manager Nick T. of the Pepboys in Hazlet, NJ (just off RT 35 on Hazlet Ave). He not only took me in right away (and got it done the same day) but he saved me a tremendous amount of money (doing all of that work for a fraction of the dealer OEM costs)! But this isn't my first rodeo with Nick, I have followed him for many years thru several different Pepboys and the result has always been the same! So while all Pepboys may not be created equal, his quality of service has consistently been outstanding. After his tour of duty he even followed up with me and assigned my car to his Assistant Service Manager Steve C, who continued with the excellent service and also exceeded my expectations! A true demonstration of professionalism and courteousness and putting the customer first! In one word...GO and ask for these gentlemen! Tell them that Steve sent you! read more

Please, please do NOT use this company. I recently had an oil change done and apperently they didn't put enough oil in. When I heard a noise in my engine a few days later, I took it to my regular mechanic and didn't even think about there being a connection to the recent oil change (yes, I'm not much of a car person). Now my engine is ruined and Pep Boys wants me to PAY THEM to take the engine apart to prove there was damage due to lack of oil. To my pleasure today I dropped my car back off to Pep Boys in Hazlet and was ready to argue my point but I can only say nothing but glowing things about what took place from that moment forward. I put my vehicle in last week for repairs and let's just say something wasn't right when I got it back but today, the crew took care of everything and addressed every concern. He made sure everything was done right and I left happy with a safe working vehicle. A few months ago I dropped my car off on a Friday and left it all of Saturday and when I picked up my car I started it to only find out THEY DIDN'T PUT OIL IN!!!! They offered a free oil change but I'm never going back there. I went today to check my oil and the dipstick is broken. I don't even know how something like that would happen so I can only imagine it was intentional. The loop you'd pull was snapped off and the plastic engine casing is crooked so I won't even be able to get to it with pliers without taking off the casing. I didn't complain about the no oil thing a few months ago because I figured the free oil change would be all I'd be offered but there is no way I am ever going to that place again. My car could die at the entrance to it and I'd rather push it myself to a different place than let them touch my car. read more

I went in for a light bulb replacement. We have been to this Pep Boys before for tires and auto repairs and have always been satisfied. The tech replaced my light bulb on my Chev Tahoe. It was a tricky light bulb to replace because it only goes on when the Tahoe is in reverse. I only needed one of the bulbs replaced on the front driver's side. The passenger side was working when I arrived. They replaced the one that was needed to be replaced(so I was told). When I arrived home, I had my husband check the work that was done. Neither light was working!! I immediately called Pep Boys and explained the situation. They said come back and we will repair or refund you your money. I went back the next morning. I spoke to the Manager Nick, he refunded me my money and then asked if I still wanted them to look at the bulb. I said yes, but if it is a part that only Chevrolet can replace, please tell me and don't try to fix it. He said okay. They were able to replace the bulb and both bulbs were now in working order! And they refunded me my cost because I was inconvenienced! I am very pleased with the service that I received from this Pep Boys and I recommend it to any one that needs auto repairs, tires and spare tire repairs, they have always given us fair service! So disappointed with this place in Hazlet. Took my 2005 hummer in for air conditioner not working. They said would cost $70.00 to fill it and put dye in it , they said if there was a leak it can cost me up to 2000 . I told them brother is a mechanic an hr away in that case if they see such a big problem not to touch. After I said that his attitude changed . when they called me They said they found nothing wrong and sent us on our way because it can take a few days to circulate the dye. I took truck home to bring back days later ac stopped working again. I knew i was being jerked around 2 days heard nothing so we called and they said truck was done . when I walked in 2 of them whispering like i didn't hear, i heard them very sneaky . He stated it was a loose valve . Took truck home again, didn't even work when i took off their property , i sure wasn't going back to them , hate dishonest people . Took my vehicle an hr away to my brothers shop. They seen absolutely no sign of dye in this hummer but they found a ton of air in the ac line that they had to suck out and all it needed was a simple filter!!!!! WTH , i am so pissed off i would not recommend this place to anyone! read more

They call you number of times to inform you about problems with the car, but don't care about informing after it's done. I had to wait for three days to get my car last time. Bad experience at Pepboys in Hazlet NJ. I went to get my car fixed on Sunday because my car was shaking when I hit anywhere over 30 mph. They looked over my car and called me to tell me that it's 100% the coil and that it would drive perfectly when it is fixed. So I just listen to them and they fixed the coil. I had to drive up north to go back to college and within 45 minutes of me picking up my car, it was shaking 10x worse. It was VERY unsafe to drive. I called them up on Monday morning about my car and they told me bring it back "something else might be wrong." But I couldn't because I was now over an hour away from them so I decided to bring it to the Pepboys in Caldwell. After speaking to the Pepboys in Caldwell about what my car was doing, they did not seem to certain that it was the coil, they said that it was the crank case breather. After hearing this, I immediately called up the hazlet store to speak to the manager about this situation because I just paid them hundreds of dollars to get the coil fixed. Let's just say, the manager wasn't too friendly or professional for that matter. He was rushing me off the phone telling me "that something else probably went in my car." After how nasty he was, I decided to call up the corporate office to report this incident because I was very disappointed. The woman was extremely nice and professional and said she would have someone call me back to resolve this situation. So then the Pepboys in Hazlet manager called me back (the man I spoke to earlier in the day) telling me I'm a liar that he was not rushing me off the phone and was totally unprofessional about the situation. He was talking to me like a dog. Then the next day, a different manager names Mike at the Pepboys in hazlet called me. He was very nice and very professional about the situation. He was extremely apologetic about what happened and offer to give me some of the money back for the inconveniences. That's the only reason I'm giving this review two stars. Had new tires installed at 6pm ordered Falken went outside after work was completed and realized Cooper tires were installed, went back inside around closing time and was told Cooper was a more expensive tire and for the trouble they would let me keep the Coopers for no additional cost. I ordered these tires on a buy 3 get the 4th one free promo that required the purchase of a road hazard warranty so about 3 1/2 months later I noticed a piece of metal in my rear passenger tire and decided to go back to to have the tire looked at. I mentioned to the service people that a warranty was purchased for these tires only to be told it only covers if the tire is not fixable and there would be a $15 charge, and to have a seat because it would be a least an hour. fast forward 2 hours I go to check on my car the mechanic was apparently finished and moved on to chat with the person in the next bay completely ignoring me as my car just sat there. Off I go to the service counter to inquire the status of my vehicle, great just a few more minutes and it was done, now I am dealing with a different person than the one who checked me in (all part of their strategy) and was told my total was $40 (including some air fresheners and tire shine I picked up during my wait-$10) so $30 to plug my tire when I inquired as to why the guy had no explanation but told me he would check on it. He returned and took $10 off the bill at this point I was given a discount card and at this point was just happy to get out of there. I reviewed my bill when I arrived at home and noticed a $2.50 shop fee and a $5 fee to reset my TPS sensor all fees were not disclosed at time of check in. I could have gotten my tire plugged elsewhere for under $10 and been done with it in 10 minuted and avoided this place which I will do in the future unless I need some car detailing products or something that does not involve dealing with their service staff. read more

im a mechanic i had replaced my entire front end everypart ! took the truck there for a wheel alignment got a call at 3 saying my front end was shot and needed to be replaced for 1800 dollars thinking it was a joke and in shock went in and sure as shit they are not joking ,i said did you even look under the car ? so the tech came out and said yup front end is shot needs ball joints , a rack ,tierod ends .sway bar links etc .i showed them the reciet for the new parts the day before and the answer was you got new defective parts .wow i almost hit the floor .went across the street to sts out in 2 hours with alignment and the same parts .called pep boys corperate and hey had the jersey rep look into it an he said he has to take the word of his tech .even after talking to sts tech who said they lied ,so do not go there for any reason and the joke of it all is all the parts i used were from them read more
