I called to ask for a quote on a wheel alignment and I specifically specifically asked if a shop fee applied. I was assured that it was not and was given what was to be the final price of about $137. I asked again if a shop fee applied and was told no. I drove 30 minutes to get to the shop in Hazlet and staring me in the face were two signs that said a shop fee would be applied. I asked if that was on top of the quotes price and was told that it certainly would be. Between that, the lack of activity going on in the shop mid afternoon and now the other negative reviews that I see here, I will never go back to that shop. read more

My experience with Pep Boys in Hazlet, NJ was great because of Brandon and terrible because of Delvin who claimed to be the manager of that location however, in my opinion should not be a manager of any store. Brandon was a pleasure to speak to regarding my issue regarding my headlight being out on the driver's side and was extremely respectful. His main focus was to assist in any way he can and despite being was close to closing time and the service tech about to clock out to take his long drive to start his vacation he asked him if he was willing to take the job on before heading out. Brandon asked me to go next door to Advance Auto and purchase the bulb. While at Auto Advance Brandon comes in to show me the driver side bulb and passenger side bulb I had in my car. He showed me the driver side bulb which was out and he showed me the passenger side door bulb and mentioned it appears that it will be out eventually as well. I told him I would get the dual package and mentioned Id like both replaced if possible so theyd match. (Again, that was extremely nice of them both being it was even closer to closing time). I purchased the bulbs. They got the job done and I was extremely appreciative. Drove home which it was till light out however 2 days later I get pulled over due to my passenger light being out. This time it was the passenger light out. I didnt see how that was possible being I thought both were replaced. So I headed back to Pep Boys. This time neither Brandon nor the service tech guy which were working there that day were in. Unfortunately, Devlin was who claimed to be the manager and Jim (service tech) were there. I explained the whole thing to Devlin however he outright told me there was nothing he can do being there was no work order in my name. I asked him if he can check to see if the passenger bulb was replaced and to check if maybe it was not connected properly because to my knowledge they were both changed. I even told him I got pulled over due to the passenger light being out. He insisted it was out of his control because there was no work order in the system. Im now getting upset and insisted on something/ anything being done because I paid for 2 bulbs that I believed were installed and now 1 was out. Again he said he could NOT check because there was no order in my name. I asked if we can start by contacting Brandon and the service tech working that evening and confirm changing both bulbs to see where we stand. He said he would. I could not believe this so called manager was not as helpful as I feel he should of been. After 20-25 minutes of this back and forth he contacts the service tech guy, and it was confirmed I was indeed there and that he had changed both bulbs for me. I felt relieved until he asked when I can come back to check on the passenger side bulb. I explained I didnt want to drive the car again and risk getting pulled over again. He didnt care. He asked again when I can come back so I told him the following morning. He then tells me they will be jammed packed the next day. I'm in disbelief at this point. I explained to him this will literally take 10 minutes if that. In fact, it took the service guy no time at all the first day I was there. I was in my car driving in less than 10 minutes after I gave Brandon the new set of bulbs and they had replaced TWO!!!!!!! I told him I would be contacting headquarters regarding the poor customer service on his part. Then he proceeded to insist I was recording him. LOL! explained I had no reason at all to record him. He threatened me to watch the recording back and that he did not consent for me to record him. I didn't feel the need to explain to him I was jotting his name down on my notes. He (Delvin) was totally unprofessional. Surprisingly enough after that he found an open appointment at 8:30 am. I couldn't make it at that time and told him I can make it there at 10:30 so he put me in the system for that time. I left asking myself "I thought said he was soooo booked". Luckily when I went in the next am which was this am Brandon was there. He remembered me from the other day when I was there. I explained to him why i was there again today. and no questions asked he checked on the bulb and he replaced the bulb which he said was defected from the company. From the first day I stepped foot into that store Brandon was just a pleasure to talk to, a pleasure to explain everything to, and a pleasure to see him handling the matter and getting it done. I respect him totally as a young man with excellent work ethics. Not once did he bat an eye or seemed eager to push me out the door and hope I dont come back. LOL! I wish I could give these thieves zero stars I went to their store on a Friday I wanted a wheel alignment for my car so as they booked my car in, he came to me the guy that was working on my car and he told me that the wheel struts needed to be replace so i said ok i will talk to my brother and see and I do not want to change them right now. I will just do that later from my own mechanic and he said OK that is fine. They will just do the wheel alignment and I should come back after getting the wheel struts installed or replace and these guys will cover the alignment or do it again for free because it is under warranty for 30 days. These were his exact words when I took the car out. The wheel alignment was so bad that my steering wheel was almost turned 30 to 40% off from where it's supposed to be I told him that once I get the wheel struts can I come back for the alignment again if its under 30 days as soon as he took my money his words changed and he told me that if only I get my repaired from these guys, they will cover the wheel alignment within 30 days again. Otherwise if I have to get them replaced from my own mechanic. These guys will not be reliable for it And well i still understand that but they literally charged me money just to make the alignment even worse than what it was before like are you serious??These guys are total scammers. I brought my car in for two new tires and brakes after I picked it up. I was hearing a noise brought it back. They informed me that I needed a transfer plate $2800 and it was gonna take two weeks to get the parts so I should rent a car. then they called me back and told take 30 days to so I took the car out of there brought it to the dealer. Chrysler turns out all I needed was a front left tire i had a broken belt inside my tire i called the manager and He hung up on me so I called back threatening to go to corporate then he promised me a couple of coupons for oil changes, which he never sent , stay away from this place so unprofessional and they have kids as mechanics i feel that they are out to hurt you. I ended up calling corporate I am sending them my invoice from chrysler and they will reimburse me for any diagnostic fees, which was $200. bunch of crooks. read more

Mark your tires!!!! Last three times I've asked for tire rotation and had not received. They mark it as done but never rotate and assure you they did. DO NOT GET AN OIL CHANGE HERE!! I usually go to my dealership but since I moved it's now an hour away. Went here got my oil change, ran some errands and on my way back I heard a really loud noise. Pulled over to a random street to find the skid plate hanging. A really nice man who lived near by helped me call them to see if they could get a tow truck out because I can't drive this thing any further but no tow truck just sent an employee in their personal car to temporarily fix it enough for me to drive it back to pep boys. *Update* Went to pick up my car and it has a flat tire! People.. I can't make this up! When I dropped the car off for my appointment this morning my tires were fine! These tires are brand new! This place SUCKS!!!!!! THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE! I went to this location for an oil change, new brakes, new rotors and new tires. That was three weeks ago... THREE! After getting the car done and paying $1000.00 I noticed the car was making a rattling noise, the brakes were grinding and I had no windshield wiper fluid (which means it was never filled when they did my oil change). I made an appointment on Wednesday, arrived 10 minutes early and was told my appointment couldn't me accommodated. I wasn't referred to another location or anything. So I had to request an appointment for today (May 24th) - I dropped the car off and the guys proceeds to tell me it's the caliper -- so you mean to tell me when I got a brake inspection nobody checked for the calipers? Aren't the brakes and calipers hand in hand? You can't do one without looking at the other! I may be a woman but I know enough to know when I'm being played. Pep Boys wants me to pay them $300 (rounded up) to fix an issue that they should've caught during my brake inspection. I asked the guy, why wasn't this checked during the brake inspection, and he replied "I don't know ma'am." This is nonsense. I've been going to pep boys for years, my entire family has been going to pep boys. I've taken all of my car to pep boys! This is the worst experience I've ever had with pep boys! I took my car in for an oil change, tire repair and rotation. They pulled my car out when complete only to then realize the tire repair was not done. They pulled it back in and supposedly did the repair. After leaving i realized they did not do the rotation. I took it back, they seemed unfazed and unapologetic that the work wasn't done. They told me to come back later for the rotation. The next day, my tire light comes back on. So i get to take it back a 3rd time bc obviously they didn't do the tire repair either. Pep Boys Follow up. 5/16/22 The car was ready 24hrs later but I had to call them to find out. Good Customer Service after such a bungle would have called me. I told them I needed it delivered and they said they couldn't due to liability issues. I get that, so I told them they need to send a Lyft as I had no way to pick up the car and they agreed. 5 minutes later I get a call from the Lyft driver telling me he's waiting for me at Pep Boys!!! I've been using this store since 2012 and have had the Pep Boys credit card since 2018. I have a lifetime Wheel Alignment agreement for my Miata. Horrific service. Rode in on a flat. Two hour wait for a tire.....OK, sans notice, understandable. Tire mounted. Drove to Manhattan....tire flat the next AM! Had to call AAA, wait an hour, tire re-inflated. Was late and had to wait till the next morning before driving to a proximate tire shop...tire flat again. Borrowed a portable tire inflator, drove on pins and needles to a trusted mechanic in NJ. Car placed on a lift; in about three minutes he identified a slight crack in the rim leaking air. Unsure about whether or not I needed the new tire sold to me by pep Boys....but absolutely certain they cost me about 7 hours, "can I drive on this tire" anxiety and $125 by FAILING TO TEST FOR OR DIAGNOSE a simple rim crack found in three minutes by a professionally run garage. I would NOT recommend Pep Boys in Hazlet for a quart of oil, any part replacement, much less any type of problem diagnosis. Truly unprofessionally managed, inept service. read more

Horrible experience! I called and explained my issue and asked if it was a repair they could do. Pat assured me they could do it. I left the truck and had an oil change done also. They called and said I was done but they couldn't fix the problem I had specifically explained. He told me I needed a dealer. At this point I am annoyed as I rented a car and if it needed a dealer I would have had them change the oil. Now it was going to be additional days on the rental. When I arrived to pick it up and move it to the dealer they wanted an additional $60 dollars for looking at the problem that they didn't fix after they said they could. The manager Pat was not helpful. After much complaining he took $30 dollars off. Unreal!! I had to pay to get the truck released. Since then I have tried pep boys corporate and they send me back to Pat! Avoid any pep boys at all costs but especially this one!! read more

After I got a tire change and came home and found my lug nut lock missing. I called and they couldn't find it. I recently had my brakes done and got charged over $100 because I didn't have it. I had them install new rear brake pads, as my old ones were wearing a bit thin. After I had paid, and then picked up my car, I noticed my handbrake seemed extremely loose. I actually thought the cable had become totally disconnected from the handbrake. Shocked and flustered, I immediately went back and asked them about it. I told them that my handbrake had been working fine when I brought it in, and now it seemed to be nonfunctional. To which, the service manager replied something like, "You say so. It's your word against ours." Meaning that he thought I was lying. I was absolutely gobsmacked. Eventually, the service manager had me meet with the service tech who had worked on my car. I explained the handbrake situation, and the service tech got very angry, because, for some reason, he thought I was questioning his integrity. Also, he said something which baffled me: "Why you bring your car here (to Pep Boys) to have your brakes replaced?" I did not know how to respond to that at the time. I had actually contemplated taking it to a different chain shop, which would have been about $100 cheaper, with a coupon, but I reasoned that Pep Boys probably had a higher number of actual mechanics and the $100 difference in price was worth having QUALITY workmanship performed on my car. At some point, the service tech pushed on one of the steel cables leading to the calipers and showed me that he could easily manipulate the caliper with one finger, saying that that was a BAD sign and an indication that my calipers were bad. Which, on later reflection, seemed wrong to me. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm pretty sure you want the calipers to be easily manipulable via the steel cables. Eventually, they showed me that the handbrake was still attached to the calipers, by putting my car on the lift and demonstrating that the handbrake could still operate the calipers. It was just EXTREMELY LOOSE. At this point, I no longer had any confidence in these guys and simply requested my car back. Later on, after watching some Youtube videos on how to adjust the handbrake on my make and model of car, I was able to tighten up the handbrake myself, using a ratchet, socket extension, plus a 12 mm deep socket. It took me about 15 minutes to adjust it. If I had to adjust it again, it would probably take less than 5 minutes. A seasoned mechanic would be able to do it in under 5 minutes easily. I'm a bit mystified at why they were unable to diagnose an issue that would have taken them less than 5 minutes to fix. And instead, they told me the reason that my handbrake was loose was because my calipers were bad. read more

My god this place is horrible. I had a dead battery in my car, I had it jumped and brought the car in for a battery change. As the hours ticked by I watched car after car get fixed and roll out the garage. After the first 2 hours I found myself in the battery section of the store trying to figure out what battery I needed to replace it myself. Customer service is clueless. I brought my truck there to have self bought tires installed and balanced with an alignment. They performed the job in a timely manner to me but when I received my vehicle back and drove it on the highway, it had a shake like a wheel was off balance. I called and brought it back to have it checked out. After a half day without a vehicle again they called me to pick it up and I did. They informed me that some of the weights fell off. ?? How does this happen? I'll tell you. The technician did not clean the wheel properly in the spot for applying the weights. Ok. After driving again something still felt off. Returned again and they rebalanced. A day later, I was washing my truck and noticed some odd looking spots on the outside lips of all of the wheels. After further investigation, I notice that all of the rims have been damaged from tire installation. I called the store manager, went in to see him. He took some pictures and copied my receipt. He told me a third party entity would be contacting me about the claim. I have not received a call yet. So now, after driving at highway speeds again, I discover that the truck still has a balancing issue. Spoke to Dave the store manager, asked me to drop it off first thing in the morning So I did at 8:30am. I called at 2:32pm and they still hadn't gotten to it. You'd think I d be a priority after 3 visits and talking to the store manager. So I then told them I was coming to get the truck after being without a vehicle all day I needed it back to go out. I went back. Walked in The door. cliff handed me the keys. I asked if it was still in the same spot and he had no idea so I assumed yes. No one asked if I wanted to reschedule. No one wanted to make it right nor did they seem to care. I doubt I'll even get a call back from Dave the Store manager. That part is fine. I'll take my business else where. Last summer, I almost overheated in the middle lane of 287! I managed to get the car home and promptly made an appointment at Pep Boys. They quickly diagnosed the problem as a faulty fan. They took my car in for a gasket that was leaking, kept the car for two days and charged me with 6 hrs of labor and parts over $1000. By the time i returned home the car was knocking and keeping noise. I immediately returned the car to them they kept it another 2 wks and offered a rental car. They eventually told me that the engine was damaged to the point that I needed a new engine and they didn't know how it happened. They then asked me to pay for half of the cost of a used engine installed. Of course I declined to pay for anything because the car was fine before they touched it. They then wanted to keep it for another week to file a claim with their insurance. They had a person come down from their "corporate insurance department" only to say he thinks this was a pre existing condition. Now I have a Jeep that is damaged to the point that it cannot drive. Pep Boys ruined my car and i am suing them for damages. Dont take your car there....they lie, overcharge and will give you a song and dance and not take any responsibility for their faulty workmanship if something happens to your vehicle in their shop/. It took them 5 hours to put 2 tires on my truck and replace a tail light fuse. The person who got in my truck to pull it into the garage did an all out burnout while the manager laughed and cheered him on. My cousin was trying some gloves on and one of the workers freaked out on him assuming he was steeling. 4 hours into my tires being "put on," my cousin, brother and myself found some stools to sit on in the isle. What do you know, the tw*t of a manager came around and freaked the hell out on us acting like we were misbehaving children... this joke of a tire shop sucks. Don't believe me? I went in for an oil change and a break inspection. An attentive mechanic immediately went about changing the oil as I waited in the sparsely appointed break-room (one TV that was kind of fuzzy with distorted sound, no coffee). The mechanic came out and told me some of my filters had to be replaced and tried to up-sell me on a special clean out procedure (I wasn't have it). I had them replace the filters for cost, but the installation fee was the price of the filters! He already had to the filter off to show me it surely couldn't cost him $20 to put in a new one. They told me my breaks only had 30% wear, so I trust they only replace what is broken but overcharge for it. I'll go back for an oil change but if major work needs to be done I'll shop around. read more

Do not get your car serviced here. Everything they did was messed up from a simple thing like don't touch my Bosch wipers they are brand new, to touching them and replacing them with crap, to why is my new head light out the next day to coming back and having them fix it along with an alignment that was worse after they touched it to new tires that needed to be replaced a little over a year and an oil change that needed oil halfway through till when it was due.Needless to say I have yet to have any of these issues since I went to a small town mechanic instead. My friend and a family member also had similar issues. When you call them they tell you to bring it back but A) who has time and B) when you do they still don't fix it correctly and when you call back the third time you get an attitude. Yea they stink save your money, time, and aggravation! The chance to make it right was the second time I came back and the third time when I called and got an attitude. Few days ago went to Pep Boys in Hazlet with a Flat Tire and in dire emergency. I had work several hours later and to my luck the customer service took care of me. I can't speak regarding past reviews, but the Service Manager Mr. Todaro quickly shopped around for a suitable tire for my vehicle, and drove me in his personal vehicle to pick it up. An experience like that to me was unheard of. All in all, I received fantastic service, professionalism and a team that likes to take care of their customers. Highly highly recommend read more

I have to say, we always have a good experience here. Everyone has been friendly each time we have gone. They have always done very good work and we have gone for everything from basic oil changes to engine flush on a water logged car. Additionally, if you buy wipers there, they install for free and have always been really nice about it. Yes, sometimes it takes 5 hours for an oil change or whatever. But that is literally every auto shop ever. Nobody does an oil change or tire mount in an hour anymore. Plan to drop your car off and come back or plan to wait for 2+ hours. Horrible service, service person tried to sell me a wheel alignment that was not needed, they didn't even see my car yet! I asked for an oil change and they told me my car needed synthetic oil so they wanted to charge me $80 for an oil change! My car doesn't require synthetic oil they argued with me stating it did when it didn't! I had 2 new tires installed and the person argued me me saying he had to put the new tires on the back when I wanted them on the front, he said it was "the law". Took my car to the dealership got my oil changed and put the new tires in the front for $30. We dropped our car that had a flat tire, they make up some nonsense of them being "so busy" they can't change the tire that day but in reality it's because they are lazy and incompetent. The next day we call to see if the car is ready the person says yes... we pull up to see our car still has a flat tire!!! The men at the front desk look confused or dumb I couldn't tell and they mumble that they need to do the car. We sit there for 30 mins to change a tire!
