The people brave enough to work at pep boys will often deal with customers who are in low emotional states so it requires great patience for humanity. Whether you're the desk operator or the mechanic both jobs are just as important as they depend on each-other to function as a unit. In my opinion, they are just as noble as nurses and doctors. My first and only experience with pep boys was for a warranty repair while we were in a Carvana trial period. We have 2 toddlers and it was a big hassle dealing with everything but pep boys got it done. Siri and Carlos are the absolute dream team of automotive care. An actual joke. They told us an inspection would take 2-3 hours when we dropped the truck off at 9am. We called 4 hours later to check on it, and they said "it's in the shop now, I'll call you with an update." Another 3 hours later, and we have to show up at the store to see that the car hasn't moved from the original spot we parked it in. We walk in and speak to staff and they say it hasn't even been looked at yet. Honestly, we probably saved ourself a bill for when they fail it for one bad windshield wiper or something. This place is for the mentally challenged. They have a website that schedules appointments and services. Well they don't do PA inspections on Sunday's because they don't have a certified inspector on Sundays. Let's think about this. Most people work M-F. When would it be easiest to get an inspection done? That's right Saturday and Sundays. Well, maybe you should rethink the business model or just close shop. I mean you don't sell parts anymore, you just do service. Just close it down and end the misery of this failure. Fix the damn webpage too. Don't blame national on your shortcomings. Pep Boys North Hills has had their time to make this right and has failed to do so. Here is my current experience with this shop. 8/16/24 - Called shop, spoke to Mark at 3:55pm. Vehicle towed to shop for multiple lights including flashing check engine light on dashboard. 8/18/24 - Mark called at 12:15pm with a diagnosis. Recommends full tune up. Work was authorized. Mark calls again at 3:38pm, Work Complete. I arrived, Paid in Full. Never left the parking lot, all the lights came back on, including the flashing check engine light. They did not fix the car. Had to leave without it. 8/19/24 - Mark called at 12:12pm. Work Complete. Came back to get the car after work, again, never left the lot, all the lights came on within 30 seconds of starting the vehicle. Again, faulty mechanical services and the problem have is still not resolved. 8/20/24 - At 10:04am, I call for an update. Mark told me he was waiting for a special mechanic to arrive at work at 12:00pm and that he would assign the car to him when he arrived. Will perform specific cylinder tests. 8/21/24 - Mark calls at 12:54pm. Work complete. I came during my lunch break with the assistance of a coworker and picked it up. I made it home with no lights and seemed to run okay (3.1mi). Parked at my house overnight and returned to work. 8/22/24 7:30am - Car starts, all lights including flashing check engine light back on, problem still not resolved. The family had to scramble to find a way to get to work. I towed vehicle back to Pep Boys, had to Uber from Pep Boys to work and back home since there was no time to plan for rides and alternate modes of transportation. I was 1.5 hours late to work. $65.93 in Uber charges for 8/22/24 due to Pep Boys continued mechanical incompetence. 8/22/23 - Mark calls at 5:30pm. Further diagnostics required. Work incomplete. 8/23/24 - Mark calls at 1:00pm. Needs Honda OEM Alternator, ordered, arriving Monday 8/26/24. 8/26/24 - No phone call, I had to call in at 4:50pm to get information. The alternator arrived and installed; some fuse blew that could not be sourced over the counter. They ordered it, will arrive 8/27/24. 8/27/24 - No phone call. Called in at 4:35pm for an update, spoke to Rhesha. She tells me work is work complete. Arrived to pick up the car after work, all check engine lights on, runs rough and car is physically shaking, thick white smoke from exhaust. Which are all new issues that have started while the vehicle has been in Pep Boys custody. The car is not fixed, for the fourth time, the car did not make it out of the parking lot. Went home without it. 8/28/24 12:25pm - No phone call, had to call in for an update. The car is in the lot not being worked on, I drove through the lot and personally verified that status. My wife had to call three times to get ahold of Rhesha, was put on hold and hung up on twice. They now believe it's the PCM and are trying to source one. No further information was given. Thirteen days later, and four times they said the work is complete and the CRV is not fixed. Four times I have had to go there to leave the car in the lot, because it cannot make it out of their parking lot. I have been kind, professional, and understanding with them up to this point. This is completely unacceptable. The mechanical incompetence to have this exact thing happen four times in a row is astounding. Not once has Pep Boys verbally acknowledged or taken into consideration how their mechanical incompetence is adversely affecting our family or offered to do anything about it. Corporate Pep Boys has been contacted, a formal complaint has been filed against this location, and a case has been opened against them by corporate. I scheduled my car for an oil change for Saturday July 15 at 9 AM. When I arrived at the facility there was no one else waiting and two people sitting at the computer. One gentleman was clearly engrossed in his phone and could not be bothered to even acknowledge a customer. The other gentleman looked up from his computer and never greeted or anything. I told them why I was there and the gentlemen looked at me and told me to leave my car for the day. I was not leaving my car for the day. He told me they were booked for the day and very busy I would have to leave my car. He then proceeded to pick his nose in front of me and repeated that I would have to leave my car. I walked out and went to Jiffy Lube across the street. I would recommend the Jiffy Lube, but I will never ever go back to Pep Boys read more

Had to replace engine, they never changed the oil Booked 2 separate online appointments in March of 2021 and August of 2022 in which I requested for the oil to be changed at both appointments. Suddenly my engine died, and my mechanic told me that it was due to a lack of oil changes. Confused, I looked at my Pep Boys account online and it showed that the oil change along with other services were "completed." Still confused, I looked at my invoices for both appointments and it appeared that I was never charged for oil changes, therefore they never were completed. I now have to replace the engine of my car for thousands of dollars due to Pep Boys not providing a service that I requested, and also never informing me that this service was not provided when I went to pick up my car. After contacting Pep Boys corporate about this issue, they said that they were not liable for any of this since they never charged me for the oil changes. I never got an explanation of why these oil changes weren't performed on 2 separate occasions, or what their policy is on informing customers of services not rendered. Lesson learned, never ever take your car to be serviced here. The risk is too high. read more

WARNING !!!! AVOID this Pep Boys repair shop ( 4751 McKnight Rd, North Hills) or you will risk being taken advantage of if you are not savvy about cars or don't question "expert's" advice. My son is a college student at University of Pittsburgh and took my car that I'm "lending" him to Pep Boys for a state emissions / inspection. If he was closer to home ( an hour North of Phila ), I would have taken it to my local mechanic but since he is 5 hours away, he went to the only place he could think of after hearing the advertisements. Pep Boys quoted him $2,615 on suggested repairs which included replacing both front and rear brake rotors & pads , replace brake caliper hardware, replace brake fluid, wheel alignment, and replace one front wheel bearing. My son was shocked and afraid to tell me the total of the repairs since I would have to pay for it ( college student with student loan debt). Long story shorter.. it passed emissions, so I told him to pay for the "failed" inspection and get the car back without the inspection sticker. I did some research on the internet to find a local privately owned auto repair shops in the area that had good reviews. After making a few calls to survey the cost for replacing rotors & pads and wheel bearing, I told him to take it to a reputable local shop near his apartment. Getting a 2nd opinion from a reputable local mechanic really pays off in saving money and headaches. The mechanic said it only needs rear brake pads which would cost $200 parts and labor. That is a difference of over $2,400 compared to what Pep Boys in North Hills quoted. Lesson learned for my son and a lot of money saved for me. read more

Yesterday I walked in because I had a dead battery. I was able to get it jumped and drove to the nearest auto shop. Their website said they were open until 6pm. I arrived at 540pm. They said they close "in 10min" and couldn't get to it today. I told them we had 20 minutes per their website and was basically begging for their help. I'm a single girl with not much car experience and had a frazzled day. He again said he couldn't do it today and told me to go next door to auto zone. They were lovely and timely. The front desk attendant was very short and dismissive, and said he was unable to even see my appointment. Yet, the minute I got in my car I received an email stating my appointment was canceled. Funny. I stated my intention to get my oil changed at a shop that could actually get me in that day, and the employee said, "Be careful about those in and out shops, they'll destroy your car." It took four hours to change the tires and another hour and half before I inquired--only then was I told "Oh they've been done for a while now!" I was sitting several feet away in their waiting room--they had my cell phone number--but nobody bothered to inform me. They did remember to charge me $35 for an extra (and totally unnecessary) warranty, as well as an alignment that I didn't need or ask for. Got tricked into 4 new tires end of august when I only needed 2. Was told you can't buy only 2 for an AWD vehicle which is bs and was only told this when my suv was up actively being serviced. Had just bought 2 new ones prior in January of the same year. They never gave me the tires from Jan or offered money/discount for keeping them... FF to end of November check tire light is already on (not low tire pressure). I put 10 miles on per day. No reason for them to have issues. They had to have started my car with no oil in it accidentally because the oil pump is failing. I'm very disappointed for having been a loyal customer for years. Great service. Above and beyond. The wheel center was scratched on my car during a repair of a slow leak. I discussed my complaint with the service manager, Chris, and he was able to reach an agreement with me that I found satisfying. Most places would have probably just said it was already there but I think they have cameras at pepboys plus the service managers care. At least if something does go wrong at this location, you should rest assure they will rectify the situation. Many of the negative complaints are due to the long waits, which I will admit frustrated me too but you need to compare with competition. Pepboys service is probably faster than their competition and they take reservations. The wait at Wal-Mart is at least three times as long for the same service. I once went to Walmart in the morning and they could not even guarantee that they would get to it....I shockingly exclaimed " you don't close for another 6 hours". So be happy pep boys takes appointments. Also my wonderful mechanic would also take much longer than pep boys to do the job. read more

I had a appointment to came in to get a new tire for my Lyft Express vehicle. When I arrive for my appointment he began to get extremely rude with me. This happened about 7 months ago. I go in about 30 minutes after open. I needed my 2 tires changed, so thinking it would take less time I brought them in loose ( boy was I wrong) They said they'd be done around 5:00 PM. They weren't done at 5,6, or even 7. I came in 10 minutes before close and they still weren't done. The tires were sitting in the same place in the garage. I didn't get the tires back until 10 minutes after close. I waited 8+ hours. I usually go to smaller businesses for tires, but couldn't because it was Sunday. When I go to smaller businesses I'm in and out in less than an hour, and that's without taking them in loose. I really don't want to leave a bad review because I sympathize with mechanics, but waiting 8+ hours is reiculous. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. I would give a 0 star review if possible. I scheduled an appointment for an oil change and inspection a week and a half in advance. I showed up a few minutes early, and reminded them of the services that I had scheduled. They told me it might be 15-20 minutes before the pulled my car around. They didn't pull my car around until I had been waiting for an hour and a half. I have a fleet vehicle, so I don't pay for these services, so I didn't have a traditional checkout experience. After I left their facility (after a total wait time of over 3 hours) I realized they had not even changed my oil. So I waited over three hours for them to NOT do what I scheduled them to do. I called the manager who never apologized, made excuses, and when I told him that I wouldn't be scheduling another appointment with them that I just felt like he should be aware of the service being provided at his store, he hung up on me! I had an appointment on a Wednesday evening at 645pm for them to check my tire for a slow leak. After waiting until 715 for my car to be lifted, I was told at 730 that I needed a new tire. They suggested replacing another tire because it too was in pretty bad shape and with it being winter, I went with it. The manager told be that it would be another 45 min to change the tires. So around 815 right? Well I ended up not receiving the keys in my hand until 905pm! From start to finish, it took 2 hours and 20 minutes to replace 2 tires with an appointment! Went in for inspection. Took a competitors coupon which they honor. $25 for both exhaust and safety inspection. Good, huh? They proceeded to give me a list of almost $650 in repairs and recommendations; $450 only to get the sticker. Included were new wiper blades because they saw streaks (mine are close to perfect). Included in this was the story that my rear drum brakes leaked oil and needed to be replaced. Took to another shop and they told me everything was perfect and gave me a sticker. First, he provided special help advising a distraught, young driver from out-of-town on a new tire purchase after a blowout -- with less than an hour before closing time on Sat.! He figured out a safe and reasonable (and available!) replacement tire for an uncommon tire brand, and then got the car in and work done the next day -- on Sunday in spite of a busy schedule in their shop and when very few other tire places are even open. That helped her make it to work on-time Mon. AM -- 300 miles away. REALLY appreciated! (especially after another local Pep Boys store wouldn't even give her the time of day on Sat.) First, this location had my car in for a scheduled appointment, could not find my keys and NEVER CALLED to say "Hey, did you forget to give us your keys? Because we don't have them." By the time I called them for an update on my car they had found my keys but pushed my appointment back two days. Then, when I picked up my car two days later, the guy helping me gave me my keys and my bill and said nothing. Imagine my surprise later in the afternoon when I noticed "Hey, those inspection stickers still say this year." When I called, the guy on the phone said that the attendant should have told me that I had to drive 150 miles before I could get the stickers. Unfortunately due to circumstances, I live in another state and can't make my car legal here until it's legal in PA and had to wait until my next trip to town to get this fixed. A week or so later I noticed a small oil leak. I assumed it was that the filter or the plug wasn't tightened enough and delayed tightening it, as I don't own a floor jack. A neighbor today lent me a floor jack so I could tighten the plug/filter, at which point I had discovered that the plug had been tightened so hard by Pep Boys that the oil tank itself is cracked. THIS PLACE IS FRAUD !! SAVE URSELF!! I went for flat tyre check and they said that I need to buy a new tyre, so I did, 150$. Left my car there they said they will call once its ready. Three ours later I got a call that my Car's break pad are totally gone and its dangerous to drive with that, new will cost 400$. I had no option but to say, ok do it. I went to pick the car when it was ready. While picking up, there was ABS warning sign on the dash. I informed then about that immediately, they said its post 6PM we cant work on it now. Please come tomorrow, I went the next day at 5 PM, they said we cant check on it today please come prior to 5 PM tomorrow. I went again the next day at 3 PM. The guy on the reception told me it will take 120$ to check what is the problem I had to argue with him for 15 mins to explain it happen when your mechanic was working on it. They checked it and said its a bad news, its going to charge 400$ to fix it. When I said this problem was not there before and this is first time its happening when your mechanic work on the Car and they had replaced the breaks pads as well. He said ITS JUST A COINCIDENCE !!... WOW, I couldn't believe it. I was so frustrated and irritated by this time, what kind of professionalism is that ? they are seriously conning their customers. I have never seen such pathetic service and response. They suggested me to drive with this warning sign on as "ITS NOT A BIG DEAL". I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff at this particular Pep Boys. In addition, I would like to single-out one exemplary staff member named Andy. I was driving down McKnight Road, late for a meeting, when my tire light came on. Pulling over, I sadly discovered that my driver's side rear tire was flat. Fortunately, I carry a small air compressor in my trunk and was able to inflate the tire enough to travel the 300 feet to this Pet Boys location. I met Andy at the service desk, explained my situation, and inquired about the ability to have someone look at potentially plugging my tire. He was extremely professional and sincere. He explained that all of the mechanics were currently working on other customers vehicles, and that it would unfortunately be at least 2 hours before they could get to my tire. He was very empathetic, and subsequently remarked that he would be happy to take a look at my vehicle in the parking lot to see if there was anything simple that he could do to fix the tire without needing to remove it or get my car on a rack. Fortunately, he was able to patch my tire right there in the parking lot!!! The bottom line is that Andy is a good human being. He is a gentleman, and I greatly appreciate him helping me out in my time of need. I have always been impressed with the staff at Pep Boys, but this was clearly ABOVE-AND-BEYOND service! If I had it in my power, I would give Andy a large raise. If any corporate management is reading this, I would hold onto Andy.
