Not Hot but great if you are a member of the AARP, Sums this place up for me. Came with a friend who invited me to check this place out for restaurant week. It's situated in the basement of a office building. Pulling in the parking lot was packed so I was expecting a pretty good nigh. First thing I noticed is that everyone coming out appeared to have more than a few years on them. Inside I saw why, it appears that this place is very popular with the retired crowd. The clientele may indirectly have something to do with how the place is. The hostess even recognized one patron as her 3rd grade teacher. The layout was a little weird with the restaurant broken up into a series of three rooms on the left and the bar on the right. There was a hallway connecting the bar and kitchen to the other rooms. Wallpaper and decor are "classic" to put it mildly. On to the food, I had cream of crab soup, crab cake, rice, and bread pudding. All for $25.00 during restaurant week. The food just comes out plain on a plate, no presentation but that's not a big deal for me as long as the food is good. None of my food was hot, Luke warm at best. Same went for my friend. They go very light on the seasoning to the point the food was a little bland. The crab cake was full of backfin meat, a plus in my book. All in all it was ok after paying my bill I went to leave but was delayed due to someone having a medical emergency. The paramedics were putting him on the stretcher. In speaking with a woman as I walked out its a running joke with the regulars as to who died when the see the ambulance. read more

This is my parents favorite restaurant. My mom raves about it often. She's obsessed with their Cream of Crab soup. I went with them on one occasion and was less than impressed. It's definitely a quiet restaurant geared more to the elderly it seemed. I didn't see anyone my age (36) or younger in there besides the wait staff. The Cream of Crab is what we went for and honestly I didn't like it. Barely any chunks of meat and I didn't like how it was seasoned. But of course my mom does love it so that's why I'm rating them the 3 instead of less than that. read more

Quality and preparation of food has always been usually consistently very good; however, our last visit was not as good as usual. The meatloaf had grizzlies. the mashed potatoes tasted like box potatoes while the brown gravy was sub-par. Our server was excellent. The chocolate cake is the best. I see lots of comments about an older crowd dining here but that doesnt bother me a bit and in fact i like it because it makes for a quieter place to eat. aside from this point i find the food to be top notch. the hambugers are some of the best ive had and the daily specials are interesting and change often so there is always something new to try. last week a got the meatloaf for the first time and the portion was fantastic. i was stuffed when i left the restaurant. the pasta with crab is one of my favorite dishes there. i also like that they dont overdo it with the spices here and will also cater to your dietary needs. read more

If you are looking for a consistent, no surprises, middle of the road meal, the Peppermill is your restaurant. While that might sound like a criticism, it isn't intended as such. There should be a place for diners who want to enjoy familiar food in a place where they feel welcome, and the Peppermill is that place. I've eaten here several times with a partner who is not an adventurous diner and has mobility challenges. He always enjoys the thoroughly dependable crabcake entree. At our last outing, I had a tossed salad with grilled Atlantic salmon. The salmon was of average quality and showed no evidence of having actually been grilled. My entree was accompanied by a pleasant old-fashioned cocktail (because what else would you drink at the Peppermill?) Nothing was objectionable; it was just uninspired. Again, I appreciate that there's a restaurant where people who aren't young, fit, and hip can enjoy what they like. With so much age-ism and disability bias in our country, it's great to see that the Peppermill normalizes and caters to a clientele that other restaurants might not seek. read more

The service here is wonderful. I feel I am at a restaurant from another era where service and relationships with the community are strong I have ordered an amazing Mediterranean salad with grilled eggplant. I've been for both lunch and dinner so far and the service and the food was impeccable. I just had a really good takeout order experience. They have a lot of elderly patrons and I feel they are in a safe space with their COVID19 response with social distancing and face covering. I think some of the reviews of The Peppermill are unnecessarily harsh. Yes it looks like it has been around a long time and the clientele it appears to cater to is older folks but I don't think that's a bad thing. I've eaten here multiple times and I've always been happy with food and service. They start you out with a bread basket of large rolls before your meal begins. On our last visit they had several choices that were "Prix Fixe" entrées, meaning you would get a salad, side, and a dessert included. I ended up ordering the chicken parmesan off of the dinner menu, which while good was way too much food for me. I see on their website that they do offer this on a lunch menu. I guess the lunch menu isn't offered on weekends? The side dishes can be huge, especially the portion of broccoli. The same goes for some of the desserts. The ice cream sundae was huge. I got to sample the creme brûlée and the lemon meringue pie, which were both good. Our server for this last visit was Dana and she did a spectacular job. She was very attentive and has a great sense of humor. read more

OMG, we love this place! We celebrated our Mom's 99th. Birthday last year and that was our first time there! It was awesome; food was delicious our waitress was super awesome and we loved everything! . We recently returned as my Mom was preparing to leave us; we went to celebrate her one more time. It was still awesome and we totally enjoyed ourselves and the food was delicious again! So tonight I want to honor and celebrate my Mom and return as we laid her to rest Tuesday! This is my aunt and uncle's favorite restaurant. My mom flew out to Baltimore to visit with them as they have been having some health issues of late. In lieu of sending flowers, Monica and I decided to see if we could buy them a meal at their favorite spot - Peppermill. So I call up and chat with the manager and purchase a $100 gift card over the phone...Mom, Sharon and Mark go later that week and have a fabulous time. Next time I am out to visit them, I will have to check it out. This is a strong contract to the last time we attempted this - at Tony Roma's in Fullerton - now closed! It was my birthday...Monica was working. I walked across the street to watch the Angel game at the Tony Roma's Bar, enjoy a wedge salad and wings...and a Manhattan. My family has patronized this restaurant for many years, but today was probably the last time. At about 1:00 P.M., a Saturday, two of us were informed, without apology, that we could not be seated at our favorite booth in the bar area until our entire party of four had arrived. The young man acting as host said this had been the rule for forty years. I suppose this rule is carved in stone and exceptions are never allowed. Since the restaurant was far from crowded, I fail to understand why we were required to remain in the lobby, while others arrived, and were shown to the booth that we had desired. Our friends came in shortly after 1 PM and we were then shown to a table, but I think we will not be going back again, despite the good food at this restaurant. We have experienced this unkind and, to me, stupid rule rarely in other restaurants and I think it demeans the status of any dining establishment to subject its patrons to this discourtesy. read more

Stopped by today. They were not crowded, the hostess seated us right away. The place does have an "older" vibe to it. The chairs and tables seem right out of the eighties. Nevertheless, it is clean and well maintained. My wife started with the oyster stew.. She got a cup and wished she had ordered a bowl. She really liked it. It seemed odd that there were onions and celery in it, but the flavor was good. There were at least five or six oysters. I got the cream of crab. Not that good. Really thick and you could taste the flour from the roux. Fair amount of crab meat, not something I would order again. Her entree was the Baltimore chicken. Very bland. The mushrooms were really big and it was a challenge to find the crab meat. The sauce did not compliment the crab. Kind of over powered it. I got the chicken parmesan. The tomato sauce looked homemade. Nice and light. The pasta was done perfectly. The chicken portion seemed a bit small. Overall, ok. Don't think I would get it again. I think if we go back, we would both get a bowl of oyster stew and a sandwich. read more

This restaurant is old school but delicious, clean, and reasonable. Love their cream of crab soup, chicken Baltimore, fried oysters, blackened fish, and key lime pie. Wish there were more restaurants left with this variety and price point. The Peppermill is an institution. It has been around for a long time and it attracts a steady lunch and dinner crowd. It has been called "Heaven's Waiting Room" because of the predominance of an older clientele. It is a great place to go with your grandparents or parents. Restaurant patrons definitely dress for the meal, so you'll see people in dresses, nice slacks and jackets. The food is your basic American cuisine with comfort food staples. You'll even see seasonal specialties highlighted like oysters and shad roe. The pasta and seafood dishes are good. The desserts are great, especially the lemon meringue pie. The servers are pleasant and efficient. Our server has been there awhile and was really great. I prefer to eat in the lounge which is attached to the bar. The dining room tends to be more formal with the decor reminiscent of a retirement home. The food and drinks are well priced. They always have fresh coffee brewing, too. read more

It's not haute, but if you want to feel young again, head up to the weirdo building on York Road and have a solid meal at the Peppermill. The servers are awesome, the food is just absolutely fine, the atmosphere--well, you won't have your anniversary dinner here until it's the Gold Anniversary, but I do hope that whatever Home my children place me in has as good a staff and food as this place. Or at least--I hope they'll wheel me in here when they take me out to dinner. They pour a better drink than most "hip" places, too--by the time you're 70, you're not so much into "hip" and more into, you know, "get drunk." read more

It is shocking how vastly different Peppermill can be from one time to the next. We have noticed this a number of times over the many years of occasionally going there, but these last two visits are especially striking since we went twice during restaurant week and got the same food. We were so blown away by the shrimp dish (Baton Rouge) that we went back another day for more. In the first visit the sauce was rich and tasted like it had been simmered for a long time-great depth of flavor and perfectly seasoned; the shrimp tender and delicious. Today, it did not even look the same: the sauce was lumpy and raw, like it had just been dumped out of a can; the shrimp overcooked to the point being inedible. One taste was enough for me to decide that I was not going to eat it. In addition, the cole slaw was not nearly as good as just a few days ago. And the salt in the wound is that you can no longer get their wonderful French fries-now they are flavored with some gross seasoning. Peppermill is like the "girl with the curl." When they are good, they are very very good, and when they are bad...you know the rest. So, if you can go when the wonderful chef is working you are in for some terrific food. If the Sub is on, all bets are off. I wish I could give you names but since I don't know, it's just a crap shoot... read more
