We made a dinner reservation at Johnny Dee's for a table in the back for 4 at 6:30 PM which was ready and waiting for us when we arrived. What we did not realize that on a Friday night, it would be so terribly noisy in the back that we could barely hear ourselves talk. Unfortunately, all the tables up front were reserved, so we could not move to the front part of the restaurant where we thought it might be quieter. Our waitress took our order and brought our drinks. We all had something different: Soft shell crab platter with green beans, Shrimp salad platter with a salad, Sour beef and dumplings, and another Shrimp salad platter with onions rings ($2 upcharge). Return visit! Party of four! Two first timers! I was so impressed with my first visit I had to tell friends about this place. As a group, we finally made it happen! Nothing has changed since my last visit. Good thing. After adult beverages and two cups of chili, our orders included a Reuben, Sour Beef and Dumplings, Chicken Caesar Salad and a Shrimp Salad Sandwich. Stopped here midday because I wanted a fresh turkey club and a good friend recommended this place. When I pulled up I saw two doors of entry. I wasn't sure which one to enter. Well, the door to your far right allows bar entry while the door on left allows you entry into the restaurant. However, you can walk between both from the inside. I entered on the restaurant side. A very polite woman asked if she could help me. I told her that I was there to place a carryout order. She offered me a menu and said I could either take a seat in the dining area or at the bar. I chose the bar side. I ordered Apple martini but, they were out of apple pucker. I then chose a long island iced tea which was made to perfection. I then ordered my turkey club to go. I sat and sipped on my drink as I waited for my to go order. There were two friendly gentlemen also sitting at the bar. We engaged in conversation as I waited. The food was ready in about 15 minutes. I had not finished my drink yet but, I had paid my tab. I fined my drink and headed for my car. I looked at my food when I got to my car. Let's just say the turkey club, chips and pickle slices didn't make it home. It was delicious. I will definitely be returning. This place is a hidden gem. What an interesting restaurant/bar. The interior looks like a bad version of Mad Men. However, this version is just outdated and in poor taste. It's the type of setup I would expect in a cafeteria or retirement home. The overhead lights are just as painful. Beyond the interior, since that isn't everything, the food is eh. It isn't bad per say but I would not return especially considering the prices. Mozzarella sticks are $10.50. They aren't gourmet and there's nothing special about them but they are indicative of essentially everything else on the menu that is overpriced for the quality. I ordered the gnocchi and it was lackluster both in taste and texture. It was only half cooked - half way too cooked and other half not cooked at all. It was way too soft for my liking as I think gnocchi should be pillows of pasta but this was more a mushy consistency. You should make a reservation if you do choose to come here. We stopped by at 5 on a Friday and it was packed with only a few tables unreserved. The service is attentive but not the most friendly. I would have given it 2 stars but my partner loved his sandwich and thought the chicken was really well made. I was disappointed coming here as it was marked so highly on google maps. read more

Holy, Moly, talk about a time warp...I thought I was in the Twilight Zone! I came here in the early sixties with my father who was quite the foodie and knew where to get the best food in town. This was THE place to go for crab cakes and hamburgers. When we moved back to this area and found that this tiny place still existed, I could not believe it... And then walking in and seeing almost all of the lounge furniture still intact, I was stunned. We enjoyed the food. When you enter, you must choose between the tables in the latticed back room decorated to sorta look like somebody's back porch or the lounge with it's grandma sofas and cocktail tables from a half century ago. Wherever you choose, you'll sit beside many small brass plaques with the names of regulars who've kept this place in business since the 50's. Located behind and underneath a strip shopping center in Parkville, the place is nothing fancy-- just good food in a comfortable, relaxed setting. Set your GPS to 1705 Amuskai Rd, Parkville if its your first visit because you will not find it at its legal address on Joan Rd. (I said it was around back and underneath, remember?) If you can recall back when Frazier's was in the basement of a Hampden row home, not on the Avenue, then you'll know the vibe. John Waters could use this place as a set in his next movie. Shrimp salad and sour beef are the house specialties. But the menu includes crab cakes and burgers, a few Italian dishes and my mom's favorite, the open faced hot turkey sandwich with gravy. I tried their meatball sub a few weeks back and I'm still thinking about it. The balls were melt in your mouth tender! They even serve french fries with brown gravy here, just like in the movie about Baltimore in the 60's, Diner. This is old school Baltimore comfort food, hon. We previewed the menu online and the pictures were too good to be true....but we both discovered they were not equal to our served plates and the quality of the food we enjoyed today. We had the chicken parmesan, shrimp salad, meat load with turkey barley soup. All the plates were excellent! This restaurant has a big menu, and daily specials. The night I visited seemed to have regulars, and they ordered a wide variety of food. But the reason I go is for the shrimp salad. The sandwich was packed with perfectly cooked shrimp, and not too much mayo. We went during the height of Covid, and were able to take a table well away from the others. The staff all wore a mask with one notable exception. THE OWNER (manager?)DID NOT WEAR A MASK. He circulated from table to table asking how everyone enjoyed their food, and although he stood back from the tables I thought this was inappropriate. I used to love this place but that was a looooong time ago. I went bowling with some friends and afterwards they asked where we might go for a bite to eat. I thought of this place because of the decent quality food I remembered and the unforgettable club basement ambience. I was quite embarrassed with the outcome! I ordered steamed mussels with white wine/garlic sauce. They arrived cold and the first few mussels I ate broke in two when pulled away from the shell, and not just the part that sticks to the shell but right in the middle of the mussel. They DID NOT taste fresh and had a very mealy consistency. Then I noticed a big chunk of ice in the middle of this pile of mussels. When I picked it up, the ice was actually still attached to the mussels. That would explain the cold temperature. These were supposed to be steamed and I'm guessing they were frozen, then microwaved. Anyway, I sent them back. The waitress said they store all the shellfish on ice and that's why mine had ice on them...whatever!!!! The waitress suggested i order the house specialty of shrimp salad, which I did. It had NO FLAVOR and no seasoning, no Old Bay, didn't even taste like shrimp. The texture was unlike any shrimp i've ever had, I would describe them as GUMMY. I just chewed and chewed and never really got any discernable flavor. These came with an order of fries, which would have been nice if they had been cooked only once, but these "skin-on" fresh cut fries looked and tasted as if they had been dropped in the deep fryer at least 3 times, hard and no flavor either...just awful. I didn't want to be a troublemaker, so I just ate what I could and didn't make an issue of it. I almost always clean my plate, but I left quite a few of these inedible fries, and some of the gummy shrimp as well. My friends didn't seem to be as unhappy with their food as I was, but I will say that my partner ordered a special of "Chicken and Dumplings" and he said it was just okay. It looked awful to me, just a unidentiable glob in a bowl, as if it had been prepared a week ago and just popped in the microwave. It looked like any sauce had long since been absorbed by the contents of the dish....absolutely horrible presentation! Others ordered shrimp salad and seemed satisfied. The Cheeseburger looked like a typical diner cheeseburger, but I doubt if it was as good as you might get at the Bel Loc or Double-T. It doesn't look like they're doing much business in the dining room as it was empty when we were leaving around 8PM on a Saturday night! When I'm on the bar side, I feel like I'm in an episode of mad men. On the dining side, you have your choice of normal table, or lounge seating - meaning dining on a sofa or an arm chair with a cool coffee table at the center. On this recent visit, I tried the seared ahi tuna with a sriracha aioli, and it was delicious. My husband had the bacon cheeseburger, and he said it was "a solid burger" and then went on to rave about the bacon. My father tried the Shrimp Salad Sandwich, which is a house specialty, and seemed to like it. He isn't as expressive. The 'regulars' are definitely an older crowd, but I think this place is well-suited to become a regular spot for us. read more

But this place also feels dirty and run down, it feels as if they furnished it from dumpster diving. When my hubs asked what type of fish they have, the waitress responded with oh I don't know, you know the square kind?!?! I was told that the tomato sauce here is the best, I ordered manicotti, typical tasteless frozen food but the sauce was as thick as water! We were very disappointed in the entire package here. OK, what can be said about service when someone comes outside and asks if wanted to order (learned they were not scheduled to open until almost 3 hours later) - FANTASTIC! Friend had suggested Johnny Dees for shrimp salad and sounded good. When arrived, discovered they were actually closed and not due to open until 4PM. While standing outside and trying to determine where might want to go, man came outside and while cook not scheduled until later, if wanted something 'light' and shrimp salad qualified, we could be served. I went to Johnny Dee's Lounge and what a pleasant surprise. I loved the relaxed feel to this restaurant. The couches and coffee tables created the "loungy" atmosphere. The food was amazing. The hot turkey platter was made with real turkey from the bird and not the processed turkey you get from other places. The french fries were cut from the potato and not frozen. We also ordered a pizza (as recommended by the waitress and was a new item on their menu) and it was amazing. The crust was thin and lightly charred and oddly shaped so you know it was hand tossed. We were told by the waitress that we also had to have the Shrimp Salad, which is what the restaurant was known for. This was without a doubt the best shrimp salad I have ever had. It was well seasoned and had huge chunks of shrimp with each bite. As far as the drinks, well I have been to many local bars and restaurants, and the drinks we ordered were well made and very inexpensive compared to drinks from other establishments. I had a very pleasant dining experience and can't wait to go back. I am looking forward to having my "plaque" made (as according to the waitress they have made for their regular customers). This place hasn't changed in forever and that's a very good thing. The waitresses are terrific, friendly and with a good sense of humor. The fried oysters were big and meaty and moist. The hamburger was basic but good and the shrimp salad is always wonderful. It's not haute cuisine but good, reliable cooking. If you love soups you will love this place. I first stopped in on a whim. It was Friday and the bartender ( not only cute but very nice) told me the soup of the day was Shrimp Bisque. It was without a doubt the best Shrimp Bisque I have ever had. I left very happy and I felt at ease in a new place.. Because I had an excellent experience I decided to go back. That day the special soup was cream of chicken. I then fell in love with the place. But the nice and novel thing was when we were there the owner, Johhny (yes its really him) actually came out and spent time with us. It was refreshing and wonderful. The atmosphere is outdated. The average age range for the restaurant was 65++. There was a bar area but I did not check it out. My 3 year old was with us. His food came out in a good time. Ours came out 30 minutes later. One hot dog was cooked well and the other was microwaved with dry shriveled ends. There was no kids menu. We ordered 2 hotdogs and French fries. That cost us 13.00 plus1.95 for a glass of juice. I had a club sandwhich that great with cold onion rings. My husband had a steak that was over cooked with macaroni salad drowned in Mayo. The best part was when they brought the food out for 2 of our friends the meals fell on the floor thanks to a balancing issue. Things happen we get it. But a simple and Senders apology would have gone a long way. When the ribs finally came out,my husband,son and I were finished eating. When the ribs came out they were steaming hot...microwave hot!
