Loved it!!! First timers, Friday night double date. We got there and had no wait!!! It soon filled up. The service was good. Might have been better to have had another server to help keep things moving. But nothing affected getting some really good food. We saw friends at two different tables, which was fun. All the staff seemed really caring. Portions were more than sufficient. Prices were a bit higher than I was expecting, but each dish was specially crafted and thoroughly enjoyable. Our regular go to local pizza has been Bruno's for more years than I care to admit, so when I heard one of their family had opened a finer dining restaurant in Elkhart, in a strip mall and had been open for a few years, I just had to try it! Once you step in the door, you are transported out of the rather run down strip mall into a lovely decorated, traditional Italian looking restaurant. We came on a random Tuesday night and were sad to discover only 1 other table seated for dinner and once they wrapped up, we were the only people there. BUT - the plus side is we had amazingly attentive service! ;-) I also completely agree with the other review - the music playing over the speakers was very charming and set a great mood. I had a glass of chianti while they gave us fresh bread and olive oil. We ordered the goat cheese crustini appetizer which is served with either apricot or fig preserves, whatever is seasonal and available that time of year. We got apricot this day and got 4 HUGE crustinis (approximately 4 inches each) with balsamic vinegarette drizzled on top - it was heavenly! Then, for dinner, we got 2 of the specials of the day - butternut squash ravioli with walnut sauce and mushroom gnocci in cream sauce. My dining companion declared her dish delicious, some of the best she had ever had and the gnocci was wonderful and came out in a huge bowl that contained 2 good serving sizes, at least. Unfortunately, this restaurant is not very technology savvy so when I inquired about advertising online, Facebook, anything - I was met with a blank look so that may explain why many may not have heard of this place, including myself. Hopefully through word of mouth, they will get the customers they deserve in a part of Elkhart pretty much lacking in fine dining of any kind. I know I will definitely be back! It turns out this is disappointing. We came here after my nephew's funeral and I cannot believe they took advantage of the situation. We pre-ordered one pasta with Alfredo sauce (no meat or anything), one pasta with meat sauce, one chicken, salad and dessert for 20 people. The potions came out was Extremely small and not even enough for 10 people to share and they charged $45 per person. Plus they were telling people that there are more dessert in the back and make it sound like part of the pre-ordered package. Make people think it is already paid and part of the meal. So people ordering it and took it to go. But in fact, they are changing $8.00 a piece before taxes and tips. It is unbelievable to realize they are scammed us in a sad situation. Our total bill ends up about $1600. Originally I thought this is a hidden jam but unfortunately disappointing and a scammed on sad situation. I come from out of town. I was expecting a small pizza place, but the inside blew be away with how classy it was. I almost felt underdressed when I walked in with casual clothes on. But the food caters towards diner portions, and taste. I would say that this restaurant offers high quality, authentic Italian food. My husband got the spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs where HUGE! He said it felt like a dinner for a giant. He enjoyed it very much and had lots of leftovers. I had one of the specials which was the seafood pasta. It was excellent; not too heavy and not too much seasoning. My friend had the perch which was a generous portion. She said it was very good, and it looked like something I would try. The salads with the house dressing tasted fresh and were also delicious. The prices where reasonable, less than you would expect for the quality. I have also heard the pizza is amazing. Someone said they where so big you had to turn the box sideways to get it out the door! The service was slow. But, other than being slow, the service was fine. We were not in a hurrying and were enjoying wine from an extensive wine menu, so we didn't mind. It could have been because there was a large party of around 25 in there also. This is the best Italian I have had. The meatballs in vodka sauce is an appetizer but we have been known to share them as a meal--just add a salad. The meatballs are the size of baseballs! Tonight we split the seafood primavera. It was DELICIOUS. My husband kept saying how good the shrimp was. Even the broccoli was exceptional. The only complaint I could have is that the wild mushroom gnocchi was not available. But I'm not overly disappointed even at that because what I did eat was so good. Very good Italian food in south bend.. the bruschetta was the best I've ever had and the goat cheese bruschetta is something you can't miss out on if you like goat cheese at all. I've had the butternut squash ravioli, the Margherita pizza, & the tony Russo. The pizza was just okay but the ravioli was something I would get again. The tony Russo was by far my favorite! As a hometown girl I can't believe it's taken me this long to drop by and give this place a try! I have to say that I was intrigued by all the positive reviews and was very pleasantly surprised. We started off with the goat cheese crostini as an appetizer. Wow...It's delicious! The fig jam over the top was the perfect mix of sweet and tangy. Large portion...enough for 4, so half of it went home. I ordered the Chicken Scallopini which was out if this world. Perfectly seasoned, tender and the white wine sauce wasn't overly done. Veggies of zucchini and peppers were firm and not mushy. Hubs ordered the classic spaghetti and meatballs. Half pound each!! Lots of take home to say the least. In the past, this was my absolute favorite place for pasta and pizza. We would go there every Friday night. They had many, many dishes to die for and the service was always fabulous. They closed one fall for renovations. Ever since they have reopened, the food has lost its uniqueness and has become almost bland. Portions have becomes smaller for the same price. Their signature vodka sauce was one of the main reasons we went and it is hardly tolerable now. I have been very disappointed the last three times. Who would have thought that one of my favorite Italian restaurants would be in Elkhart, IN. Unfortunately for me, I live in Illinois and only visit Elkhart once a year for the Jazz Festival in June. I have two words: TONY RUSSO. The pasta sauce on this dish is ridiculously good. The last time I visited I was able to coax them to serve me cheese tortellini with the Tony Russo sauce and let me just say, it was FANTASTIC. I ate here with my parents and loved it. They offer gluten free pasta (a novelty in Elkhart, IN) and are very helpful in assisting with the menu. My veal was made incorrectly (with breadcrumbs) and they fixed it for me no problem, and was lickety split about getting a new entree out for me. A server walked by twice with a pitcher of water, and did not bother to fill our empty glasses. The food is good, but not good enough to make up for the poor service. I tried the Shrimp Diablo the first time - it's spicier than I like, but the Alfredo is the best I've had anywhere and the goat cheese crustini is to die for! I did think the service was amazing and definitely wasn't disappointed with anything service wise. I'm a big bleu cheese fan, I ordered the pizza with bleu cheese apple butter and onion. It is a great idea that was executed poorly. The bleu cheese melted to the bottom and when you hold up the pizza the cheese was so hot, it took off all the toppings and left me with a piece of dough. The dough itself was a little overdone. If it was made with something that made it more hearty that hold together the toppings and had a ton of bleu cheese crumbled on top it would've been better. Staff was cautious about flour dust in the air but we were less concerned than they were and figured if they were that knowledgeable that they'd exercise great care in the kitchen AND THEY DID. We visited Per Bacco last night and things couldn't have been worse. We knew they were expecting our group because they allowed us to make a reservation for 11 people. Due to a parking lot that isn't suffice for the amount of seats in the restaurant, it took an addition 15 minutes for everyone to make it to the table. We finally had our drinks & appetizers ordered around 6:30 then entree's & pizza by 6:45. After an hour of waiting (they said the HUGE pizza takes longer to cook - it was a 16'' pie with 4 toppings!!) most of the food finally began to trickle out of the kitchen and in one case onto a vacant chair, as the waitress partially dumped my buddies dinner, almost onto his lap. Unfortunately our waitress also failed to submit one of the dinner orders for my friends wife, so she was delegated to standby as we we served. Her food did arrive under-cooked, probably because it was rushed through the kitchen. Because we were eating bread and appetizers during our wait, we had plenty of pizza to take home, so our waitress boxed the kids food and the under-cooked entree. She then ruined the 16" pie by failing to line the pizza box with foil. The pizza and box were "together as one" after the bottom of the box was saturated from oil and the crust couldn't be separated from the box when I got home 10 minutes later. The one thing they did get right was the check. everything we ordered was on the check, no comp for the late and under-cooked entree the waitress didn't get in. Although the dinning room at Per Bacco is very nice, the lack of service undercuts it. read more
