LAURA IS AHHHMAZING! I'm active and I'm always tight and in pain because I don't really stretch or form roll.... and I'm used to massages that hurt. I was referred to Matt Erwin by a friend after I complained about shoulder pain. This friend told me he was a game changer. I have been very active for the last 25 years with bull riding, ballroom dancing, rock climbing, motorcycle racing, running and yoga. More than massage, Casey provides REAL massage therapy. I was new to Portland and I was hurting. He did, and I've been a regular for almost 18 months now, and include sessions with him part of my exercise regimen. His focus on my motion/fitness goals and helping to keep me flexible and moving (despite my office job, extra weight and a herniated disk) as I work to increase my fitness level. He routinely spends a few minutes after therapy to show me/refine some stretches or exercises to address whatever my most current complaint is. I see Casey once a month, and so far I think this is the best perk provided by my benefits! He is incredibly professional and he always leaves me with some tips on stuff I can do at home to help manage my back issues. My massages walk a fine line between being so relaxing I almost fall asleep to being so intense I feel it in every inch of my body (intense in a good way). The office is nice and cool during the summer, but during colder months, he'll turn on the heated massage table that really adds to the whole experience. I just finished massage #3 with Casey. I feel a world of difference from when I started seeing him just a couple months ago! Casey was able to identify several areas of tightness in my muscles and joints that have been causing pain and tenderness in both my day-to-day life and when I work out. He was able to confirm areas of muscle imbalance that I knew I needed to work on, and taught me about areas I have been neglecting. In addition to releasing the tight areas through massage, Casey gave me homework to do, including specific stretches, foam rolling, and strength-building exercises. He demonstrates each exercise in the gym within the building for those of us who need a visual reference. I think I'm addicted to these massages, because every time I leave I feel like I'm walking on air and can even breathe easier. I saw Casey a number of times for a serious shoulder rotator injury that was preventing me from being able to do my job. His work was exactly what it needed. Deep, focused, professional. There's a time and place for therapeutic massage, but I didn't know there was a time and place for sports massage until I started seeing Casey. Several things stand out to me as making Casey and Performance Bodywork very unique and helpful: - First, Casey knows the body. He has a BA in exercise physiology from the University of Oregon, as well as training in massage therapy. He also has several physical training accreditations. I tend to ask a lot of questions about the body when getting treated, and I appreciate level of knowledge of anatomy that he shares. Awesome. - Casey also knows body mechanics. Whether you're recovering (from a period of inactivity or an injury) or simply looking for relief (from common misuses like working at a desk job), Casey is extremely well-versed in body mechanics and the issues we create for ourselves from common use, overuse, and/or misuse of the body. - After my first session (when I was experiencing lower back and hip pain after getting back into exercise after a period away), Casey spent at least 15 additional minutes after our massage demonstrating stretching exercises that have helped loosen the glutes the hip flexor, and the hamstrings on my left side. He also watched as I did the stretches myself to ensure my form was right. And, he covered some core strengthening exercises that will also help with these issues. - For me, Casey's place in Goose Hollow is close and convenient. The therapy suites are particularly spacious, and the patio out front is better than any waiting room you can imagine. - I like the online scheduler because (1) I do all my calendaring online so it's just easy for me and (2) you can compare availability of all therapists (I'm usually looking for the *soonest* available appointment, regardless of therapist). - Casey is very mellow, warm, and welcoming, much like the best personal trainers out there. read more

Had my first sport massage therapy with Casey a while back. It was my first time receiving a sports massage and I was very happy wit the results. I have continued with regular massage sessions since then and have definitely noticed a huge improvement in my flexibility, and I just feel better as a whole. I swim a few times a week as well as ride my stationary bike for about an hour most nights. Staying actively is extremely important for m at my age, and so I have to also make sure I get regular maintenance care for recovery. Casey is very knowledgeable and gifted as a massage therapist. I got a new health insurance plan at the beginning of the year that includes a massage benefit. I found Casey via the plan's network of massage therapists, and I've had about 5 massages with him. I feel lucky that I found someone I liked on the first try. I run, practice yoga, strength train, and sit at a non-ergnomic desk, and Casey manages to work out all my kinks. I like deep tissue massage, and he quickly tuned into the level of pressure I like (deep, but not to the point where it makes you tense up and is counterproductive). When I moved to Portland, one of the first things I did was look for a good LMT. I have chronic back issues and headaches and have had a difficult time finding LMTs that can generate enough pressure to give me relief. Previous places I have been have advertised deep tissue, but give more of a firm Swedish massage or can't maintain the pressure through out the massage. I have actually had LMTs tell me my back is too bad and they can't help me! Here they focus on pain relief and athletic performance and I have not had a bad massage. I primarily see Casey for deep tissue and FST, but have seen Laura and Mina who are great as well. I started going to Mina after hurting my hip and needed fast recovery. I was training for the Boston Marathon and was not making much progress in PT with my pain and mobility. After 2 sessions with Mina, I went from feeling about 70% to about 95%. She is so professional, listens to your needs, and an expert in her field. She knows how to work with athletes, and I always see results immediately. I go to her regularly now, whether it is for pain prevention, maintenance, or my hip flares up again. And more! not only does he fix what hurts (3 buldged discs and torn ligament in ankle) but he tells you how to fix it by showing you precise excercises to strengthen where you are weak so you get better. If you are an athlete and enjoy working out, he is the best! I have never met anyone like him, and I have been to about 6 people in SF and 13 people in Portland prior to finding him. He knows how everything connects and tells you how to lift and stretch to fix your weak spots. After your massage he takes you into a work out room in the back and demonstrates and watches you do excercises to make sure you are doing them right. I injured myself 8/29/11. I started seeing casey this september (2 years later). And he started me on the path to recovery. Just yesterday my spine doctor told me I can play softball again, for the first time in more than 2 years. Casey gets that credit. (I should mention I am 32 and played 2 sports in college and have been working out 4-5 days a week my entire life, including restricted workouts since Ive been injured) I would not be where I am without him.
