Stopped in at Peri-Peri Guys in Hicksville and overall had a really good meal. I ordered the whole chicken and it did not disappoint. It was juicy, nicely seasoned with that signature peri-peri flavor, and the heat level was perfect for me. Not too spicy and not too mild. The rice and sides that came with it were tasty too. Definitely worth it if you're craving flame-grilled chicken. For some reason, they forgot my daughter's entire kids meal order so we shared my chicken while waiting for it to arrive. After a while, the entire chicken was done but still no kids' meal arrived. I went to the lady in the front and she said it was coming so we waited another 15 minutes and still nothing. I went back up to just ask for a refund but they said it was definitely on its way this time. It finally came but it was definitely a battle to get this thing. the staff was apologetic and eventually got it sorted. I have good and bad to say. This is a quick service spot, they have takeout but they have sit down space as well. The booths were comfortable. There is a robot that delivers your food to the table. Totally cute and I love it! My tips to the restaurant: 1. Wipe the screen down after every use. The only way to get the robot to leave the table is to tap OK on the screen face. You can see in my pictures that they do not clean the screen at all, oil everywhere! 2. Send the food together. We had a chicken wrap combo that came with onion rings and another combo. The one combo came to the table, then the robot went to the kitchen, then to another table...back and forth, onion rings came to the table alone, then another sandwich went to another table, kitchen, then another table, kitchen then our sandwich. That robot went to the same three tables numerous times, it would be easier to hold the food until the order is ready. The food is delicious, they have grilled and fried chicken and they have sauces to give your chicken flavor and/or spice. Personally, I liked the fried better than the grilled, only because it was a little more juicier. The grilled was slightly overdone, but not too much, it was still good. The sandwiches were part of combos that come with a side and drink, which is something we recommend. I visited this place because I like to support halal businesses but this was a big disappointment. I don't like to give negative reviews because it impacts a business a lot but I also don't want anyone else to have a bad experience like I did. I ordered the Peri Peri chicken over rice and asked if it would be boneless while ordering because I wanted something easy to eat with a spoon. As you can see in the picture that my chicken over rice had HUGE pieces of undercooked chicken and to make it worse, the chicken had a very unpleasant stench to it. As soon as the girl brought the food to me I told her please take it back as I can not eat or digest such big pieces of chicken and it's very unappealing. I didn't even TOUCH the bowl. She said she would have to ask the chef/cook-who said no exchanges. I went to speak to this chef and told her my situation but she was not open to any negotiations and told me to pay and buy something else if im not happy with it. However, after a lot of going back n forth she agreed to make me something else. I asked for the King Burger specifically which my sister had ordered and it was wayyy better in taste. The cook again tried to play me for the second time and gave me a different sandwich instead of what I asked- which was ALSO undercooked as you can see in the photo below. I ordered the Peri Peri Chicken over rice and it was awful. It was basically a giant bowl of grease. They use so much oil to grill the chicken, and then place it on top of the salad and rice. The salad becomes so soggy it's inedible. The oil then sits at the bottom, and the rice soaks it all up. The amount of grease was disgusting. The rice had no flavor, all I could taste is grease. The chicken had 0 flavor. It was bland grilled chicken. The salad consisting of lettuce and sauteed onions were disgustingly soggy. I could not finish eating because of how horrendous this was. Eh, how would someone manage to screw up three cuisines on one shot? Peri-peri chicken is one of those "things" that is simple but by no means easy to pull off. What exactly is it? Well, peri-peri is a type of chile pepper that's cultivated in Mozambique or Angola and bought there by Portuguese colonials. The chiles are fairly spicy at about 100,000 to 200,000 Scoville heat units (it's only one step below Scotch bonnet or Habanero in terms of spiciness at your local supermarket produce section), fermented and made into a sauce that is used to marinate meats, and often brushed onto fire roasted chicken where it develops a tangy, spicy glaze. For those who have been to London, Joburg (or closer in), DC or Chicago, you might've heard of Nando's, or saw their sauces in grocery stores. Their sauce usually packs a more piquant punch for their chicken, or if you have been to Portuguese areas like "The Main" in Montreal or Ironbound in Newark, you would've seen chicken, butterflied, marinated, placed into baskets and roasted over charcoal with brushings of a more savory peri peri sauce where it develops a smoky flavor. If you've been to Rotisserie Romados (MTL) or Pic-nic Barbecue on Ferry street (EWR), well, that's the flavor profile here. Imagine half a chicken, tender, cut into pieces, flavor fully penetrated, crispy skin with a glaze, with seasoned fries and a salad on the side. When it's done well, it's mighty tasty. One of the correlations that I got was the need for halal chicken-and-rice restaurants to slather hot sauce on their wares before peddling it off to the youngins' - I mean, it's nothing new, Sammy's, Shah's and the Halal guys been putting red/white sauce combos since at least 2015, and Nashville hot chicken has been in the menus of some Kennedy fried chickens since 2018 - some people have more resilient GI tracts than me and enjoy being capsicum junkies. But when I saw Peri-Peri on the menus...well, I have...misgivings. Why? Because as much as people think you can condense hundreds of years of culinary heritage into a squeeze bottle and fix issues with your cooking? You can't. Take for instance the chicken from Peri Peri guys - note my photo of the 3 pale looking smallish pieces of chicken, at least 1 with deliberate grill marks seared onto it...now compare it to the crispy mahogany skinned finish of a typical Frango Grelhado from Ironbound, complete with flacks of herbs. So it doesn't look enticing, but...yeah, don't bother and lay off the copium. it's rather bland as well - they probably figured that you will slather the sauce on it later so they deliberately made it under-flavored to compensate. There's no smokiness, you don't feel any spice or herbs marinated nor on that limp rubbery skin. The fries next to them were salty and tasted a bit like Lawrys or Old Bay, but it was stale like it's been sitting on a warehouse shelf for weeks at a time before someone shipped it out. The shrimp was more breading than seafood and it tasted like the batter sat out for a bit too long before it was used. The punch that my wife got was coyingly sweet but somehow not refreshing. The only thing that was somewhat good was the Rocher shake, but it was a bit like vacuuming up cold sweet chocolate butter with edible rocks strewn throughout - somewhere a young cardiologist is probably rubbing his hands together in anticipation of an expensive procedure involving atherosclerosis many years in the future. So, you came to this part wondering if the peri-peri sauce will ever come to the rescue of the chicken. In short? No. It tastes a bit like Frank's red hot mixed in with some kind of fruit preserve, and it falls a bit short of even Nando's sauce (which is more fruity garlicky tang than heat even in the spiciest XXX bottle in their stores). See, normally I'll excuse it if the chicken is good by itself - it isn't. Or if the sauce works well. It doesn't. Or if it's good value. It wasn't. As a Portuguese chicken, it failed. As a halal eatery, it's not that great. And as your usual rotisserie chicken joint, forgettable. Yeah, if you want value, go to the cafeteria at Ikea up Broadway. If you want something exciting for your tongue? Plenty of Indian joints in the area. If you want good chicken? There's a Korean counter at the H-Mart in Jericho. And if you think this is Portuguese someone needs to serve you some Frango Grelhado from Ironbound. read more

Everything you order will need sauce to make it decent. We had the king with lemon and herb, 10 peice wings with mild, and chicken skewer tights with mango and lime. The mild has a nice kick to it. The lemon and herb was barely noticeable in the sandwich. The mango and lime was the worst. There was this odd artificial taste to it. The fries was good and onion rings was a tad better than burger kings. The sides are small fyi. Plus, a can of soda for 1.75. Overall, $52 could be better spent elsewhere. Nothing blew our mind. Came in on a Sunday night while I was in the area with my bf and thought Portuguese and Africa fusion was such an interesting blend. I ordered the spicy Peri - Chicken Salad, side of Onion Rings, and my boyfriend got 1/4 chicken. Even though I asked for a special order of the spicy peri - chicken salad, it was definitely not as spicy as I thought it would be. I have to say I love the service LOL being served by a robot was a first for me. I've definitely seen it in videos but it was fun to actually see in person. The food that we got was really delicious. Very flavorful and quick to come out. I did spend the money on a milkshake that I wasn't really impressed with so next time I will skip it. But the chicken was every tender and seasoned well. I only tried the medium & hot and as someone who loves spicy food I didnt think it was spicy at all BUT it was super flavorful - charred, zesty & juicy. Really nice fast-food-ish in a strip mall by shake-a-paw and chuck-e-cheese. Grilled chicken was nice, very thin, was expecting more juicy. The peri-peri fries were nice - good spice I don't think I could easily place. They have different sauces, the hot was not hot. A little tingly. There was one hotter than that which I would recommend to anyone looking for heat. I think I would give them another try, just not for a chicken sandwich. The sandwich really was well constructed - but for the money I was looking for more chicken. The inside is absolutely beautiful for the category it is in. However, it is grilled, not the crispy chicken sandwich I prefer. Buns were really good too, they weren't fall apart. However, I didn't like the sauces at all. They Very Hot one was the only one I kinda liked. But overall they were too watery, and too salty. And the sauce is the most important part imo. In terms of the cole slaw, it was just ok, seemed store bought. So been dying to try a decent peri peri spot since the only good ones we've had is nandos which is in London and DC lol, finally decided to give this place a try, and ordered through über eats. Ordered 1/4 chicken (hot) with 2 sides. Got the peri rice and Mac and cheese and of course had to try some of their lemon wings so we ordered 3 of them with extra hot sauce on the side. Now this being a new place, they went above and beyond with the customer service by giving us 12 wings on the house. Great way to establish that you care about your customers. The chicken was delicious, super fresh and juicy, now I'm someone who can tolerate the spiciest food in the world so I do wish the chicken was spicier (for me) but the hot sauce has some good heat to it as well.
