The food is good, the service is slow so, it's a great place to catch up with loved ones or your small group. The ambience is relaxed. They don't seem to have enough staff on busy days like a Saturday, Sunday mornings or free pie day Mondays. Even special event days in and around Newton they seem oblivious to needing "extra" help. Trying to please is a heavy job and pleasing no one but the cook and "corporate" seems to be their way around those issues. When I walked in I was immediately Greated with A Welcome to Newton Perkins, The Manager (super friendly and very kind) Seated us, asked if we would like a minute to get our drink order, with it being hot i was very grateful for some ice cold ice tea. Worst experience. I was coming back from a long day at a hospital with my daughter and looking for a little confort we chose Perkins to wind down and have some relaxing from our day. The bad server was all over the restaurant trying to push free pay Monday, we were waiting to be asked about our order. Finally we got our order in after half hr of being there. It took another half hr to 45 minutes to get our food not complete and I order the teriyaki chicken which I got with pretty much no chicken and my daughters food was missing eggs and fries were soggy, just to clarify one more thing everyone else got their food before us even people that got there after and we never got asked about free pay. Terrible experience, horrible service, waited for over 15 minutes before the server came to take drinks, we were ready to order but server refused to take order until after she brought our drinks, she must have forgotten she said that because close to 10 minutes later she came to get our order before our drinks arrived. Then we waited another 10 minutes and our food arrived, cold and very unappetizing, turkey, stuffing and gravy was not edible. When server dropped off our food she asked what else we needed and we politely told her our drinks. Had to repeatedly ask for things numerous times, we had a little kid with us and thankfully he was well behaved or that long of a wait would have been ugly. Not only was the service all around bad, we had a hard time each other at our table because the manager was having a loud personal conversation with a waitstaff from across the room. We were not rude about the situation at first until the manager decided to take offense and call the police on us for calmly voicing our opinion. Not to mention, the rude cook coming out threatening me. Several customers heard the thing and even told us that the staff was in the wrong. Several other customers walked out due to not getting service. The restaurant was not busy at all. Only three tables were being used. If the owner is ok with this kind of behavior, then nobody should eat here until changes are made. Clearly the employees don't want to be there. Do the right thing "Owner". Was here for lunch and the service was ok. One person at my table ordered hashbrowns with cheese. When they came out, there was no cheese. We let the server know and he took the plate back into the kitchen and came back with cold shredded cheese on them. Another person ordered sourdough toast and was given texas toast. When we mentioned it she was given the same thing again. We asked for management and and was treated like we were ignorant. We said we were just going to get up, pay and leave. At that time, the manager told her staff to call the police and to take down our license plates. The cook came out mean staring us three times. Brandy was going to all the tables to make sure everyone was good and had a smile on her face the whole time really just a lively spirit. If the Perkins has much to be blamed for, it's just being consistent- You know what you're getting at a Perkins (as opposed to this little, weird Iowan town)- Consistency. The service was pretty good for us. The servers and hostess were all really sweet. The food was okay. My friend who ordered turkey bacon got regular bacon. Upon arriving, we overhead an adjacent table comment that they have been waiting for their food for nearly an hour. That should have been a clue for us to bail on this place. After waiting for 10 minutes for a server to arrive, we placed our order. Drinks arrive about 15 minutes later and it took a full 45 minutes since we ordered for our food to arrive. We were just about to walk out. I ordered the BLT and soup, which were ok. Others in our group ordered eggs w/hashbrowns and an avocado BLT. The avocado was NOT ripe, yet they put it in the sandwich anyway. It was hard. The hash browns were burnt. The place appeared to be run by a bunch of teenagers. I didn't see an adult over the age of 21 working in the place. None of them seemed to understand how to provide good customer service. Our server walked by, without even pausing in her stride to ask how the food was. By the time we could say anything she was several booths down. She didn't smile the entire time. We observed adjacent tables receive the wrong check and the wrong food. In the end, we finally saw the manager and he offered a discount on our meal, which was appreciated. This Perkin's restaurant in particular offered something different. We will start with the positives then a slight view of a negative aspect. Positives: Our waitress. If only I could remember her name! Young gal, dark brown hair and a smile most horizons would be envious of. She seemed to treat everyone like family and for someone as young as she was... I was impressed. She provided quick, prompt service. Da Food: Served hot, with a variety to taste from. I ordered the Hearty Man's Combo. THREE selections of meat to dive into, breakfast potatoes and three pancakes... I love your thinking Perkin's! Negatives: In 1983 the last Star Wars film was released. So was the last time the men's bathroom had been cleaned at this Perkin's in Newton. Although I don't hang out in a bathroom to eat my breakinner (Breakfast/Dinner) all things are a suggestion as to how the management runs a business. If you can't clean a PUBLIC bathroom at least once a year... maybe serving eggs with a side of bacon shouldn't be your specialty. Overall, the amazing waitress won me over. I will return. We went in there Wednesday night after I got off work on 7/20/2022. This was around 6:00 pm very few cars in the lot, maybe 5 or 6. When we walked in the hostess let us know it would be a 30-45 minute wait. Perkins needs to have more than 1 waitress on Wednesday nights. As this is the day that they send out a BOGO free entree. With 2 kids and a hungry husband, Perkins seemed like a safe bet. The restaurant was smelly, the service was mediocre and the food was not up to par. My preschooler had the cheeseburger kid's meal. The fries were OK but the hamburger patty tasted like a greasy piece of sponge. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad which was heavy on the iceberg lettuce and short on everything else. My daughter's salad was edible and my husband seemed to enjoy his Texas tots: which were an interesting combination of tater tots and pulled pork smothered in two different sauces.
