First time coming here for brunch, and couldn't believe our group of 8 of us managed to get seating without a reservation! Meal: 1. Grilled oysters (6 in an order) - oh. my. gosh. If I could've licked the plate clean of that butter sauce, I would've. It was so tasty. So good. You've got to order this. 2. Calamari - very tasty and a perfectly shareable portion to kick things off right. 3. Pickled cold shrimp - not my favorite at all. The shrimp is just placed on top with all the pickled veggies below so don't really get the concept of the both of them coming together. This would not be a reorder for me. 4. Shrimp Po-Boy - I had to ask for another side of the remoulade sauce bc they barely put any in the sandwhich. I will say there's definitely no shortage of shrimp pieces. The fries weren't anything to talk about which is fine, bc the focus was on the sandwhich anyways. Not sure if I'd order again necessarily but it was definitely tasty. As a huge seafood fan, I decided to try Perla's for lunch. I ordered the Oak Grilled Spanish Octopus and the Seared Maine Scallops. The octopus was tender and made for a great appetizer. The scallops were outstanding! I chose garlic butter sauce, which elevated the entire dish. The ambience inside was pleasant with a charming blue and white nautical theme. Every time I walk the streets of SoCo, I cannot take my eyes off of Perla's. The outside is SO cute, and is just aesthetically appealing to look at. Adorned with string patio lights and nautical patio furniture, how can you resist? Living in the east coast, the fresh seafood cannot be beat. However, Perla's oysters come pretty close to it. Unlike the $1.50/oyster prices I'm used to, Perla sells their imported oysters for $4/oyster. We chose various oysters from Maine, Massachusetts, Canada, and Washington. Trust me, once you eat oysters from the east coast, you will never go back to Gulf Coast oysters! We also ordered the Ahi Tuna Tostadas, which is flavored with chipotle aioli, avocado, serrano peppers, and citrus ponzu (my favorite!). Whether you are seated inside or out (outdoors is my preference, but indoors has the coolest large fish tank!) you're sure to have a great experience. I've tried seafood spots across Austin and Perla's genuinely took my by surprise. I will crave these toastadas in the future, they were so fresh and not too awkward to eat even being fully stacked with goodnesss. I used to love this restaurant, but we recently had a terrible experience there. We were a party of 6, celebrating 2 birthdays. We ordered drinks and oysters to start, which was great. Then it all went wrong. A runner brought out just 3 of our 6 entrees early, without the sides we ordered. After 5 minutes of waiting, we decided we might as well begin eating before our food got cold. The other entrees eventually ariived from another runner. We had to clarify who ordered what. After that, someone else brought the sides. Our waiter never asked us how the food was. The waiter did ask later if I wanted another drink. I said yes, and he grabbed my half-finished drink and began to take it away. I had to stop him. He returned later and asked my mother-in-law if she'd like another drink. She said no, but the waiter didn't ask my father in law, who did want another drink. I eventually flagged down our waiter 10 minutes later to get that order in. At the end of the meal, we sat looking at empty plates. A bus boy took some of them. Much later a hostess picked up the rest. I saw our waiter, overwhelmed at the wait station as he ignored us and dealt with other tables. We had hoped to order dessert, as it was a double birthday celebration, but by the time our waiter finally checked in on us, even our 11-year old daughter, who always wants dessert, gave up. We asked for the check, which was over $500, including an automatic $80 tip. As a former waiter I would have paid that voluntarily, but I found it ironic that I was being charged involuntarily for some of the worst service I had ever experienced. Perla's has been one of my favorite restaurants. That changed tonight. read more

Had a party of 6 and it was difficult to get reservations anywhere even for a Tuesday night. Luckily, Perla's beautiful patio is reserved for walk-ins. I prefer the patio anyway because I love the ambiance and fresh air. At 5:30pm, we were seated immediately but it did get packed eventually. Tuna tartare: 7/10 good dish but it bothered me the tuna was gray; it didn't look right to me. But it tasted fine; nothing out of this world but good. Shrimp cocktail: 7/10 the shrimps were very big. It was a good starter but nothing standout compared to other shrimp cocktails. Scallops: 9/10 most scallop dishes are small and I'm still hungry after; not here. They give you 5 large scallops and the veggies are perfectly roasted. We ordered 3 dishes and I'd order it again! Oysters: 9/10 we asked for the biggest oysters they had and were recommended 4 Katama Bay, 4 Wellfleet, 4 Beaver Tails. They really were large and satisfying! I wonder why it took 30 min to come out though. Ahi tuna tostada: 7/10 I was still a little hungry so ordered this which was filling enough. Overall, love the ambiance here. Most underwhelming and over rated seafood spot. This was recommended to us so we decided to stop by for some fresh seafood and drinks. Our server was fine but unfortunately everything took a ridiculously long time to come out. We kept being told that it was coming out shortly but we were still kept waiting. The odd thing was we mainly ordered stuff from the raw bar so it should come out quickly. We got the shrimp cocktail, half a dozen oysters, and the wood grilled oysters. For something that was supposed to be a quick lunch, it ended up taking almost 2 hours. The seafood didn't feel very fresh despite it taking so long, and my grilled oysters were really salty. We came in for brunch around 12 on a Saturday and we're seated in less than 10 minutes for our group or 8! Pleasantly surprised how quick we were able to be seated. I tried the gumbo and little gem salad which were both good! Serving size was a good portion as well. Only negative were the long wait times for service throughout our meal. That being said, we ordered the lobster roll, jalapeño tuna melt, cheeseburger, and shrimp po' boy. Our favorite was the tuna melt! The shrimp po' boy was great, but be prepared for a LOT of bread. The French fries were perfectly crisp, hot and salty. We sat outside and even though it was a cold afternoon, they had plenty of heat lamps going which kept us plenty warm. I honestly wish I could give Perla's a higher review because there was nothing inherently wrong with the food or the restaurant, but I definitely think it's extremely overpriced and service was not very good. We ordered 8 oysters, 2 shrimp po boys, mimosa pitcher, and 1 lobster roll. The food took a very long time to come out, and everything was pretty expensive. $4/oyster, $38 for a mimosa pitcher, and ~$36 for a lobster roll. The food was honestly pretty good, so I can't complain there. The mimosas were just alright. Our favorite was the orange juice, but we could've passed on grapefruit and pineapple juice. It's located on SoCo, which is a great location. It was also really nice sitting outside, but I'm not sure if I would come back to Perla's. My friend and I stopped in for brunch, not knowing anything about the menu, other than the fact that Perla's brunch showed up on her gluten-friendly menu items app. We were shown to a table on the patio right away, and promptly ordered a couple of cocktails. For food, I went with the Steak Ranchero - a hanger steak served with eggs, ranchero sauce, and a griddle cake - and my friend ordered the Lobster Omelette (after much internal debate and a long discussion with our waitress). It was a beautiful morning, which made sipping our drinks and hanging out much more enjoyable. Their outdoor patio is large and was pretty packed, but we never felt like we had to raise our voices to talk to each other, and we well-looked after by the staff. The Steak Ranchero was very flavorful. The eggs were served over-easy, which, when the yolks were broken, added another layer of flavor to the ranchero sauce. The griddle cake was served with a large dollop of sour cream on top - it was too much for me, but I appreciated the effort. The steak was a bit overcooked, but not to the point where I had to send it back. My friend did enjoy the omelette, but at one point wondered aloud if she'd made the right decision, passing up the lobster frittatta. They did fill the omelette with lots of lobster chunks, and she said the eggs were perfectly fluffy. We stuck around finishing our drinks and chatting until we realized that the restaurant was starting to fill up. Grabbing up the tiny plastic mermaid that came in my drink, we vacated the table to give another group the chance to enjoy a hearty brunch under the shade of that giant tree. read more

We have been to Perla's several times over many trips to Austin and enjoy many things Perla's offers. Perla's is a seafood and oyster bar in hip and trendy neighborhood of Austin called SoCo (South of Congress Ave) Most recently we stopped by for a quick bar meal and ordered oysters and several appetizers. Oysters are always great here. We also enjoyed street corn and in the past had great ceviche and other appetizers. Perla's has a great outdoor patio which could be good on a hot Austin nights. We had the ahi tuna tostadas that were phenomenal. Fresh raw tuna on a tostada, topped with a Chipotle aioli sauce, pickled onions, cabbage, cilantro, Serrano for a spicy kick and olive oil. (21$) We also ordered the blue crab and shrimp gumbo (29$) It was delicious and would recommend as well. Margaritas were strong and fresh, none of that sour mix bs. Service was professional and prompt. The server, Donovan, was quite excellent at providing suggestions and information without need to go back and consult a chef or manager. What this says is that the restaurant (and chef) ensure the employees taste what they serve so they can provide info to diners. This is one mark of excellence. The setting is beautiful. Since it was a pleasant autumn day, we opted for outdoor dining and enjoyed our decision. It's hard to write about the vibe but this is closer to a low-key fine dining. It isn't fancy but the food and service make it close. We had grilled (or broiled) oysters and they were as good as the ones I had at Felix's in the French Quarter. We also had a sampler of oysters in the half-shell and we were guided by Donovan who knew the types of oysters and sources and showed us that by flipping the shell, the underside gives clues as to the waters they originated from. Tuna Tartare was excellent (I've only had it as good in Aspen, Co for 3x the price). Then smoked octopus and grilled red snapper. Both of those were outstanding too. Price is reasonable for the quality but our bill was over $175 (we ate a ton and didn't care) this restaurant is right on price considering the quality on the plate and from the staff. The location of this restaurant is just fantastic, located in the heart of South Congress. They have a great deck, the service was very friendly and fast. We went for lunch and had the Ahi tuna tostada, calamari and grilled mahi sandwich. The best thing we ate hands down was the tostada. The tuna was like sashimi and it was packed with flavor from the aioli and topped with Serrano. Absolutely delicious! Our other two dishes were good, not great. The mahi sandwich was a bit of a disappointment, especially given it came highly recommended from our server. I felt like it lacked season and was very bland.
