More west 6th flash with no substance. My 2 most recent times here: 1. Waiter forgot to put in my order with everyone else's at my table so I watched them eat for 25 min til mine came out. When it did it tasted like flavorless mush. The king ranch roasted chicken casserole definitely needs to be taken off the menu. 2. The time before that our table went about 10-15 min without getting water refills or being able to re order drinks. Slightly off the beaten path of West 6th lies a Tex Mex place that features eclectic decorations and delicious food. We recently stopped by Ranch 616 and were pretty impressed by what they had to offer. As mentioned before, the decor is a bit wacky but it seems to suit the place well. Since it is right off of 6th, be aware that parking may not be the easiest to find and you'll have to settle with what you get. The interior and exterior are clean and lively and there is sometimes live music on their patio section. When we arrived we were quickly seated and ordered quick as well. The waiters were attentive and quick, which is always appreciated. One thing we noticed is that water comes in repurposed candle holders, which is cool but also means you get only a bit of water at a time before you need to refill. For food we ordered a plain cheese quesadilla, quesadilla of the day (ended up being chicken), and their ranch chicken sandwich fried. All the food was pretty good. The plain cheese quesadilla was perfect, just the right texture and filling of cheese. The quesadilla of the day was a standard chicken quesadilla featuring refried beans, cream, etc; pretty good, but nothing special. Lastly, the fried chicken sandwich was great, the chicken breaded well and very juicy, although is came out very very hot. Ranch 616 was a very welcome change to what you would normally expect from West 6th's bar and fast eats scene. There's a lot of character here and as people always looking for reliable restaurants in different neighborhoods, Ranch 616 definitely fits that bill. Enjoyed a nice casual dinner tonight here with my family. Drinks were delicious and strong and the food was pretty good as well. We went with the Patron platter and a cup of tortilla soup. The tortilla soup is great and definitely top 5 I've ever had. The patron platter is huge and definitely more than 2 people can eat. Really liked the quail and frog legs the most. Mexicans (and Mexican immigrants in the States) have been drinking tequila, Topo, and lime long before Ranch 616 existed (and for, as far as I can remember...). I remember restaurants giving this to us as kids in Matamoros - with a side of Peptobismol - so we wouldn't get sick. Ha. Simply said, it wasn't invited here, but guess they were smart enough to trademark the name (maybe the recipe?) in 2017, and call it their own. And according to Ranch 616's website, they also claim to help "popularize" Topo Chico. "The restaurant's eponymous cocktail helped popularize the sparkling mineral water that was once such a little-known commodity in the United States..." No. Ick. Stop. That's not okay. Topo Chico has been around since the early 1900s, and it's a delicious sparkling water that grew in popularity because it's damn good. Topo Chico "made" Topo Chico. ...... Aside from having *that* discussion at our brunch table... my dining experience was ok. This was my first time at Ranch 616 (never went there 15+ years ago as an Austinite), and we went there to watch a UT game on their patio. We started with crispy oysters (Texas Gulf fried oysters, jalapeño remoulade, green goddess, charred lemon) and an off-the-menu special: Chicken nachos. Both good. We rented the restaurant for a wedding reception, dinner and dancing in April. As we negotiated with the team we were becoming nervous that we had made a mistake choosing Ranch 616. Being from Seattle, there wasn't much we could do but trust. We also weren't going to be able to see the space event day until we arrived. So we were anxious to say the least. I'm happy to say all of our nervousness was for not. The restaurant looked amazing, the food was on point and the staff was even better! The bartenders were over the top with their speed and Texas style attitudes. Our guests didn't have to wait in lines and the drinks were fantastic. The servers did a great job of working the crowd with plated appetizers and when it was time for the meal they were very attentive but not hovering. Just perfect. The kitchen staff were light on their feet and made sure the guests were well taken care of. Bravo! We opted for family style and that was a great way of bringing two families together. Dancing on the patio was great and the send off toast with the jalapeño shot was pure Texas fun. We highly recommend Ranch 616 for any event or simply a lunch or dinner when in town. I ordered their homemade limeade & my friend had a few cocktails. Service was friendly, fast and prompt. The food was nice portioned and way overpriced for what it was. We ordered the Maria was a 3 dip plate. All decent, nothing WOW! We were asked if we wanted more chips and veggies since it came with a small portion and we were a bit annoyed that there was an up charge for that which should have been mentioned. I ordered the Divorced Quail. The fried quail with the red sauce was amazing. I loved that red sauce so much that I ate the grilled quail with it, too. I didn't care for the green sauce. It was served on top of a pile of mashed potatoes and vegetables including beautiful Romanesco broccoli. My friend ordered the smoke salmon which paired nicely with the couscous. Went in on a Saturday morning around 11 and got seated right away. The inside decor is very southern/texan. Our waitress was amazing and provided amazing service. We had the following: Divorced Chilaquiles - this dish comes with house chorizo and fried egg , however I asked for chorizo to be on the side and got scrambled eggs instead. It's a big dish and so filling. The verde sauce that is used is very tasty. Overall this dish was amazing and highly recommend it. I could have paired it with? Minimal gravy on my Chicken Fried Steak too. Ordered more but that took literally 20 minutes to get a 2 ounce serving. Guess no "Country Boy" bliss for me. The meat also wasn't exactly pounded down enough showing a thin line of pink in the middle. Thickest CFS I've encountered. I liked the Potato and Onion medley nestled under the entree. For those privy to Ranch Water, welcome to its birthplace! The drink was created by the late Kevin Williamson (former owner) who enjoyed a similar mix during his hunting trips with his dad. While you can now find Ranch Water in cans or behind the bar, I highly recommend trying it at the original location for the full experience! FOOD: The food isn't exceptional or mind-blowing, but I would say for those interested, not bad. However, the prices are incredibly overpriced for no reason. A Fried Chicken Steak for nearly $40? That's insane. I came for a girls' brunch date, and we shared the "Hungry Rancher" Burrito ($18) and the Divorced Chilaquiles ($16). Despite its intimidating name, the Hungry Rancher Burrito is just a mix of three meats (chorizo, sausage, and bacon) with eggs, cheese, and potatoes. The Divorced Chilaquiles was a great addition to our order, offering a crunch and a variety of flavors to mix things up. The new waitress didn't really bother to stop by. After waiting for about 20 minutes, we had to call someone for our checks. Price: 2/5: Everything was pretty pricey for what it was. The tacos were $21, quesadilla was $18 and a chicken plate was $24. One of the waiters asked if we needed extra chips for our ceviche, but little did we know the extra chips were $3. I will say that this restaurant is a little expensive for what it is, the Jalapeño chicken I believe was $24 and the chicken fried steak $28, I feel like for a basic dish it was a little much. I reached out to Ranch 616 about 3 weeks before I was coming to town for my bachelorette. I wanted to see if they were able to accommodate a group of 18 people with short notice, and they were! For a large group we had a set brunch menu of $40/person. This came with apps, a salad and an entree. The service was great for so many of us and the food was so good too.
