Pet Food Express in Mill Valley is awesome. Jessie is more knowledgeable about canine nutrition than most veterinarians! Two of my dogs had nasty skin issues...nasty enough to get into their eyes and make things scary. Jessie recommended "cooling" proteins and another supplement and both dogs are 100% fine. This place is great! The team here is really friendly and helped answer all my questions. The store has a really good environment overall. They were able to recommend me a cat food that got my 18 year old cat back to a healthy weight, and they have a deal where you can buy three packages of food and get the fourth one free, which is really helpful since high quality food can get pricey. They also have great COVID safety precautions, the employees kept a safe distance from me and they only allow three customers in at a time. I will definitely be shopping here for my cats and recommending this place to all my friends who have pets! read more

On Sunday, April 26 I found a small dog walking down the middle of Highway 128 in Anderson Valley. I brought him back with me because everything there was closed - animal control, the animal rescue, the fire department, etc. - and I didn't want him to get hit by a car. He was covered in fleas and ticks, his hair was long and matted...and worse. I had no idea what to do to help him when I came in to Pet Food Express. Toni was such a help - right away she helped me bathe him, showed me what medicine to get to help with the fleas, and so much more. She was a total angel. I promised her I would follow up and let her know what happened: I'm happy to say that I'm keeping him! His name is Leo and he is the sweetest dog. Wonderful place. We walk in and are greeted so warmly and one of the staff members I think knows all the customers dog's names .... she comes out and greets Freya (my dog) and I'm blown away at how nice that is - very sweet. What a great place! I went in yesterday and got one of those Halti gentle lead head collars. My American Foxhound, Olive Bee pulls like no tomorrow! Nicest man helped me out. Then this morning I had a bunch of questions and Jessie spoke with me for quite some time. Then I loaded up Olive Bee, and her big brother, Rupert, a rescued Plott Hound... Rupert peed in the store on some toys, UGH, and generally they were out of control but no one seems to mind cuz they are all animal lovers. So Jessie teaches me how to put on Olive Bee's gentle leader and we ran through the store. I can not tell you the difference what a thin strip of fabric makes.... She gave me so much info... It was my first time giving my rescue dog a bath and I was so nervous because he was so scared. The first person I met was Solange who was so supported! She was helpful, explained the process, all the while trying to encourage me. She gave my dog treats and was just overall so helpful. made my entire experience so much easier. We were using this shop for our pet needs for many years, until I encountered Robert (who claimed to be a manager). Having over years contributed and volunteered at a local animal shelter, we had a small discount at this store for years. It is under my wife's name, though both of us used it to shop here. However, Robert refused to extend the discount to me claiming that the only way it can be obtained is through my wife presenting her ID. When I inquired about change of policy, he became agitated and rude, basically instructing me, that I must obey rules. I have requested to see the rules (written policy), but after 15 minute wait no policy was produced. It is particularly frustrating, as for years we attempted to shop locally to support businesses in our area, and we have always viewed this discount not as a money saving tool (most products can be bought on Amazon for less), but as a token of recognition of our contribution towards well being of the animals. Update: Petco management team has contacted me and have gone to considerable effort to rectify the situation. read more

Exemplarity staff who know their products. The ONLY place I shop for my animal products. I especially love the people at the mill valley store. I've also had great experiences at the Novato, Los Gatos, and Campbell stores. Pet Food Express only sells healthy food for animals, successfully tested products, and will return anything that your pet doesn't like. Food, toys, etc. The returned toys are donated to pets in need. Love that. They have a great pet wash center I use often. Buy 3 and get the 4th free with most products including flea medications!! And they initiate and participate in tremendous charity events for animals in need. They have a extensive resource of food knowledge so they can compare ingredients of packaged foods to find the healthiest food for your animal. I discovered this when my poodle had pancreatitis and the vet prescription food wasn't filling him up. They helped me find a substitute food that had the low fat/protein requirements but had enough fiber so Bobby wasn't hungry. This sure made a difference in our lives. The store is tucked in next to the new Whole Foods in Mill Valley and the Post Office on Blythedale. It is locally owned by two men who clearly love the animals and appreciate their staff. They really know what they are talking about! It is pricey but I feel like you get what you pay for in terms of service. All the different pet food express locations don't always carry the same dog food which is my only complaint. But the sales associates were able to look up the type of food that I was feeding my pups and find another brand that had a similar breakdown of ingredients to minimize any indigestion. Nice inventory, good variety. Pleasant, helpful, friendly employees. HOWEVER, most items are quite overpriced. I expect a large conglomerate/chain to have more reasonable, competitive prices but everything I've compared from dog food to toys and accessories, is much higher than Pet Pro, my little neighborhood "mom and pop" store. I don't find this appealing so PFE is usually my last resort but it wouldn't be fair to give less than four stars. read more

It is close by but I always walk away needing to go to the Terra Linda store because they are usually out of things. This was no exception today but in addition there certainly seems to be a "who you know" attitude in that store. Door was wide open and was rudely told to wait outside....understandably due to COVID restrictions. Meanwhile only one cash register in operation with a long line while the rude employee was just watching the line grow. Every time people left the store I tried to enter but was repeatedly told to wait outside. It was not until there were actually no customers left in the store that I was then told I can go inside. Meanwhile, the five people waiting behind me were all allowed in at the same time as me. COVID is tough but please don't make it harder by making people wait outside unnecessarily. I don't have any of these problems at the Terra Linda store, staff there are always welcoming and helpful and the store is always well stocked. For me it is now worth the drive. read more

Wow -- they should clone the staff of the Marin Pet Food Express stores and put them in just about every retail establishment. I've only been to the Northgate and Mill Valley locations, but I've been impressed at every visit. Not only do they greet shoppers as they enter the store, they actually sound sincerely welcoming. Every employee I've encountered has been very helpful, and patient with my many questions. If one employee doesn't have the answer, they don't wing it -- they ask a senior staff member for assistance. Also, I was thrilled to discover that my all-time favorite veterinarian (now retired, I'm sad to say) is one of their consultants, so I know I'm getting sound advice. The stores are amazingly clean, easy to navigate, and everything is pretty easy to find. They have a great selection of premium pet foods/supplies, many of which I can't find elsewhere in Marin. The prices aren't the cheapest, but they have a "buy three, get one free" deal on canned cat food, which -- along with the helpful staff and superior product selection -- makes it well worth shopping here. read more

I have a rescue puppy who is quite a challenge. The entire staff has been wonderful. Toni is the first staff person I met and I tend to stay with her. She is knowledgeable and helpful every time. If I return a food product because my pup doesn't like it or anything else there is never a problem and always a smile. Also, their buy three and get the 4th free is a fine savings on the dog foods. We went in to get help with our dog barking. A trainer had told us to get a bark/shock collar. I wanted my dog to stop barking but, was not to keen on that type of collar. We were helped by Chris and he spent the time to really help us. We purchased a collar that emits citronella when the dog barks. It works....really works, and we have tried many different things! I needed some help with food and nutrition products for my senior Weimaraner. Jasmine (sales associate) worked with me and identified food with beneficial ingredients for cognition and joints, which are problems with my old gal. She also provided information for a natural sleep aid. With so many products out there, it was comforting to have the help of a knowledgeable and caring person who really new about the products on shelf and pointed me in the right direction. The store, although smaller than some, was fully provisioned, super clean and had a family atmosphere. They even have room for the self-wash facility. With the ample parking, easy access off of the freeway and generous hours of operation, I highly recommend this store. Add my name to the list of satisfied and returning customers! read more

My dog was skunked; the first time I went to the store was to bathe my dog. I had to wash him several times and the staff was very helpful. They gave me lots of soap and extra towels! When I went to pay, they won't let me :-) as I had been through enough. Since then, I buy all my dog food, new bed and treats from them and will continue to. They are very helpful and fun!! Michael the owner suggested I stop by the store and look into a suitable food change as so many skin issues can be food related. I tried his tip. Going into the store is always a great experience. The staff is very well informed and willing to help. They helped me switch to Halo Dog Food, Salmon Stew. My dog has had a life turn around. No more scratching. He loves Halo. I even got there a few minutes after they were closed once and a nice man that was still in the store came and asked if I needed something like food for my pet and was out indicating he would open for me if it was an emergency. Can't remember his name...but the "pet expert" I'll call him, was terrific at helping me with a bit of training and showing me how to use a product called Pet Corrector.
