Luka developed a swelling under his jaw that grew from essentially nothing to a large mass in only three days. During the appointment, I specifically informed Dr. Romero that I had found a half-chewed stick and was concerned that a foreign object or infection could be involved. I also emphasized how rapidly the swelling had developed, which is highly unusual for cancer. Despite this, I felt that Dr. Romero only focused on the possibility of cancer and did not give adequate consideration at all to other explanations. Expensive diagnostic testing in the range of $2,000, including X-rays and ultrasound, was recommended and performed, yet the possibility of an infection or foreign-body reaction did not appear to receive any attention. Luka was sent home without treatment or medication, despite bloodwork results that were consistent with an infection, but not cancer. Doubting the diagnosis and being worried about an infection possibly spreading, I called Uptown Animal Hospital the next day and requested the prescription of antibiotics. But instead of calling me back, Dr Romero then called my daughter and informed her that Luka likely had cancer and antibiotics would not help. Of course this call left her extremely distressed and worried. The biopsy results have now confirmed, about a week after I took Luka first to this vet, that the swelling is in fact an infection, most likely caused by a foreign object. Looking back, I am extremely frustrated that the rapid onset of the swelling, my report of the chewed stick, and the laboratory findings did not lead to a stronger consideration of infection and immediate prescription of antibiotics. I understand that veterinary medicine is not always straightforward and that cancer must be ruled out when appropriate. However, I expected a broader differential diagnosis and a more balanced evaluation and consideration of all the available information. Instead, I felt that alternative explanations were largely dismissed from the beginning. Fortunately, Luka is now receiving appropriate treatment at a different veterinary clinic, but the experience left me with concerns about the thoroughness of the diagnostic reasoning and the overall quality of care we received from Dr Romero. I will definitely never take Luka or my own dog to Uptown Animal Hospital again and can only recommend everyone else to take their pets to a different veterinarian and clinic.

Last week, my bully had an ACL tear, and surgery was the only option to avoid long-term limitations and medication. Even though I live in the Bay Area, I don't mind traveling for non-urgent surgeries because I trust Dr. Hector completely. My dog always heals quickly and well under his care. Dr. Hector provides all necessary medications and is always reachable with the most helpful information. The doctor provides taxi/pick up drop off from and to San Diego. His genuine care and remarkable capacity with children radiates in everything he says and does. We feel fortunate and blessed to have met Mr. Havens, as he is an incredibly astute, experienced, and sound/deeply informed resource about neurological disorders. Mr. Havens is a former school psychologist and heads a team of registered behavior technicians (RBTs) and requires each person on his team to meet a standard of excellence/training/and experience before working with clients. He pays his employees a good wage and treats them with respect-and this has created an organizational climate where technicians who are agile with children and have proven themselves to rise to a high level of clinical competence/strength work symbiotically to support their child charges with sensitivity, insight, and care. The program is exceptional, holistic, and innovative. We were impressed by how AIM supports social skills utilizing the "Peers" social skills model (pioneered by researchers at his alma mater, UCLA); and he provides parent training that is invaluable for parents trying to better understand and navigate the pitfalls, challenges, and triumphs/joys of navigating life with a child on the spectrum. Mr. Havens took time out of his busy schedule-despite having a 90 minute commute back home in traffic-to train us on some key ways to support our child. There are so many myths about life on the spectrum-terrible conspiracy theories, anecdotal evidence offered up as empirically based research, and scaremongering (on social media/the internet). Mr. Havens is a wellspring of knowledge and a sound, compassionate clinical expert on a wide range of topics related to disparate neurological wiring, autism, developmental disorders, and communicates without judgment, condescension, and with profound compassion/understanding. We called countless ABA agencies-and what particularly stood out to me was AIM's inclusion of a feeding and sleep-based ABA program. No other organization provided such a unique approach to blending ABA with a focus on sleep and feeding/eating issues-(both areas that can be profoundly challenging for many people on the spectrum). The facility itself is exceptionally clean and they maintain excellent standards of hygiene/sanitation during COVID. You can rest assured that your child is not only safe with the exceptional clinically trained staff-but that AIM maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and safety protocols during the pandemic. The owners bio made me think that this was a stand up place with integrity and values. I emailed for weeks trying to setup an appointment with any therapist- occupational, speech, adaptive physical education etc. The owner kept giving me the run around- I genuinely thought he was working hard to help me find resources. Then, a school nurse appears to assess my son- from this company! Turns out she didn't even know how to conduct a nurse assesment, didn't know how to write a proper report, and had very little professional knowledge, nevermind integrity. I now realize this is one of those exploitive therapy clinics that's not actually interested in ethically treating special needs children. So disappointing given the needs that exist and the potential this place had. Would not trust this center with any kind of evaluations or treatments. Beware. Also everyone should know that you can file a UCP complaint against this company or any employees of it that you work with who engage in unethical practices. You might think since it's a private company you can't do that, but they are given public taxpayer funds to operate and therefore are subject to the same procedures as if a direct employee of the school. Feel free to reach out if you are unfamiliar on how to file a complaint. Parents must keep charters and those working with special needs accountable.
