I have lived in Shawnee for many years and this is a long time local pet store. I don't typically shop there because I purchase my pet food through Chewy and have it delivered. And I purchased my cats grain free treats through Amazon. The cat treats were not available so I decided to drop in and see if they had some grain free treats. The store is well lit, very clean, well organized. I was greeted and asked if I needed any help. I found the treats I was looking for which were a typical price compared to PetSmart. I purchased two different types and then looked around the store. They have a variety of reptiles, fish, small animals available for purchase along with the goods that are needed to care for them. The check out person was nice and friendly. A lot of people go into the store to look at the variety of animals. They seem to have a less than when I went there years ago. They do have puppies that are purebred for sale. The puppies look healthy and well cared for, but I don't really care for them being in a small cage each day. They also have a small monkey that's been in an enclosure for years. I do believe the monkey is well cared for, but I feel sad that he has to live his life in the enclosure. I don't know anything about the backstory with the monkey or if he possibly is taken out of the enclosure and goes home with the owners. I can't comment on that, but that is the only reason I give it a four star. Just looking at the store based on their products and their customer service on today's visit it was good. Obviously they don't have as big selection like a bigger pet store, but they're much more knowledgeable about how to care for all the animals that they do sell. read more

The space right next door to them is doing construction and it's probably that the two share a ventilation system. There is a foul, chemical smell in there. I couldn't breathe and didn't stay. Can't be good for the animals, and I hope it gets resolved quickly for their sake. The people can leave, as I did. The animals are stuck in there breathing in that noxious air. read more

This place is amazing! As far as any ole pet store goes, this one far exceeds it! We go in there often to hang out with Frankie- who isn't for sale BUT he's just the cutest and we definitely don't need a pet monkey even if he was for sale lol. They have a really amazing selection and even carry axolotls which are seemingly not easy to find otherwise. The staff is awesome, as they are ready and able to answer questions concerning care for the animals, and their selection of supplies is pretty amazing too! I saw a billboard on Shawnee mission parkway that said Frankie was being abused, so I went to check out things for myself- only to find that it certainly did not look like the case. I know PETA can sometimes get a little "too" radical, but TBH I am glad they are getting more business so others can see for themselves! Thanks Pet Stop! read more

Last time I was here the older lady working yelled at my grand children after Frankie the monkey startled them and they cried out . Needless to say we left and didn't buy anything. The fish selection is lackluster. They do have a large selection of mice and feeder rats. There are friendlier pet stores in the Kansas City area. We won't be back to this one. read more

I really don't know who can walk into this store and purchase anything. The conditions the animals live in are awful. The puppies are in tiny cages, selling for thousands of dollars. I urge you to question where these puppies are coming from, and what their daily care looks like. You keep buying, they keep breeding. Let alone a monkey in the middle of the store, that has been captive since 2013. Please don't support this sad excuse for a "business". This is not how you treat animals. read more

The animals are not in good condition and none of the cages are kept very clean. They have animals in inappropriate cages that will cause issues for said animal (rats and other rodents in cages with no ventilation). They seem to provide NO education for peoole purchasing the pets, such as appropriate cages or even treats/food that animal may need. The fish seem to be the only exception until you reach the front of the store and see betas in tiny bowls with shredded fins barely alive. The monkey does not have enough enrichment or space and is constantly seen in a state of anger or confusion. I would never recommend this store to an animal lover; they would be as devastated as I was. read more

I visited this pet store and was really disturbed to see a capuchin monkey alone in a cage on display. He was completely alone in a small cage. My guinea pigs have more space. Capuchins are pack animals and need social interaction. As many other reviewers have said, seeing a caged monkey in the middle of the store being harassed by customers and children is upsetting. It's heartbreaking to see him in such distress. A monkey is not a marketing tool. read more

Have been stopping in here for years. The decline under current management is a shame. Went today and the employees were all up front to busy eating lunch on the counters, talking with friends and trying to appease an older female employee and her friend than to help anyone. All of the animals are stressed and it feels more like a horrible petting zoo/ attraction than a reputable pet store. The cages for the bunny's, hamsters, and birds are all open top. People constantly reach in and try to grab or pet the animals, this is so stressful especially since all of these are prey in the wild, so having people constantly reaching for them triggers fight or flight. Freddy the money is unbelievably stressed. I used to be taken here as a kid and he was always throwing himself at the cage walls trying to grab at people. I went in a few months ago and he was still doing the same thing. That specific type of money (the Capuchin) lives in large bands of up to 35 other moneys. They are super social and need other moneys to thrive. He has been in that tiny cage all alone for 18 years! Their puppy's are sold for thousands of dollars, seem to never get to go outside, live in small cages with wire floors (horrible for paws), and are 100% from puppy mills. All of their animals are exploited to bring more customers into their store. Their animals well-being, is not taken into account at all. They would rather knowingly keep animals in horrendous stressful conditions for more money than even attempt to give these poor animals the bare minimum amount of respect or care. read more

I stand by my original review. The employees care about the animals that temporarily call Pet Stop home. They also care about their patrons and their animals, too. Contrary to what some people say, the puppies are not from puppy mills, but from private breeders, who take care of their puppies. I bought 2 guinea pigs for the Pet Stop. Both have RINGWORM. Upon a return visit I realized most of the animals in the store where very itchy and likely have it also. This is very concerning. It is a fungus and can be airborne. You could get it just from visiting the Pet Stop. My child now also has Ringworm and we are out hundreds do to vet and doctor appointments and prescriptions for both my child and the guinea pigs. Also, I was told both guinea pigs were girls. I was not allowed to hold them before buying due to COVID19. Once home we realized one was a boy. Now we have to have 2 cages not 1 and will have him neutered. They store and cages are very dirty. Amazing staff, I got my Chihuahua, Peanut from them 5 years ago and she's absolutely amazing and has had perfect health! The quality and care they take for their animals is amazing. People comment on the monkey - they have given Frankie an amazing home. He is loved and interacted with frequently. His behaviors are quite normal. I always thought this was a better pet store because it's not one of the chain pet stores. I bought a Covid puppy from them and she came very malnourished and had health issues which I've spent a lot of money to help her. Pet Stop does get their dogs from puppy mills But their employees are brainwashed and believing that they aren't but they all come from one lady that sells tons of dogs in all different breeds. This is the worst petstore I've EVER been to right behind PETLAND. Puppies are sick and drinking out of small animal water bottles. Puppy mill dogs !!!!! I was looking for a Midwest ferret nation cage. On Midwest's website they sell for 249.99 this store had the Midwest tag on it but was selling the same product for 349.99. That is not acceptable what so ever this place shouldnt be recognized as a small business. I asked a employee if they price matched and he rudely said nope. And then I said ok thanks and started to walk away but then he said go buy it from them then I don't sell things for that price they don't give it to me for that so why would I sell it to you for that and I kept trying to walk away and he was almost arguing with me about why I shouldn't shop at his store so I left. There are 2 types of pet stores - those that you enjoy watching puppies at because it's a nice place and you know the animals will have wonderful owners in a month tops and then places that are dirty and actually make you feel sorry for the animals and the lives they are leading. Unfortunately, my opinion of Pet Stop is the latter. Before I decided to rescue a Westie, I was going to all KC pet stores in search for one and stumbled upon this "gem." While most pet stores have blankets or dog beds in the cages, this place had nothing - just the cold, metal crate for them to lay on. There weren't even any toys in any of the cages. Everything was just dirty. It reminded me of how dogs in a puppy mill would have been caged when they weren't forced to breed. I left there feeling sad for those dogs. Aside from the that, the lady who was working there was really rude and didn't seem to have any answers to my questions. Even though the price was right, my gut was telling me to run. Employee was extremely rude! My family and I came in with our healer puppy. The store healer kept jumping up to check out the puppy. No big deal, we didn't mind a bit. Then when we let our puppy smell the dog the employee started talking to the dog, saying I know you don't like puppies just like I don't like children while looking directly at our 4 year who was sitting in the cart. Um, I love animals, no question. I live for them, I would do anything for my own cat. But I do not appreciate a small monkey in a tiny cage being poked and jeered at by small children. It's cruel. And I don't think they should be allowed to have it there. I also agree with the previous review about the puppy section. They have no blankets, and some were shivering on the cold metal. One was sleeping in his food dish. This is wrong and I plan to write the owner. The selection of cat items is non existent. They have a small section of toys and collars and a couple different brands of food. The reptiles and amphibians they carry seem to be the most well cared for and they do a have a large selection of them. They're cool to look at, but I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a snake. I walked in, grabbed a cart, then saw a caged monkey and puppies for sale and left. Any place that cares about animals would not be selling puppies from puppy mills. For those of you "dog lovers" who are excited about the idea of a store selling puppies, I beg you to do your research on puppy mills, which is where ALL stores get their puppies no matter what they say. I rescue dogs (many from mills) and the abuse they suffer is heartbreaking. Please rescue/adopt or at least go to a reputable breeder. Just received a yelp! email from the owner stating the following: "Subject: Pet stop "I am the owner of Pet Stop. You said ALL pet store sell puppy mill pups. That is a lie!! We have shut down 29 puppy mills in the state of Kansas. We DO NOT sell puppy mill dogs. Pet Stop gives a TEN YEAR WARRANTY on all puppies. Pet Stop has been family owned for 38 years. We are proud of our reputation of only selling healthy pups from reputable breeders." Sorry, but I call BS. 1) I find it highly dubious that a single pet store shut down 29 mills, if any. Shutting down mills takes a ton of work and I still maintain my stance that a pet store that sells dogs in cages and keeps a monkey in a cage probably doesn't do much fo support animal welfare. 2) store owners can publicly refute reviews. If any of what the owner were saying was true, I think he/she would have stated the message publicly to protect the store's reputation 3) NO 'responsible breeder' would ever sell pups to a store. 4) Not sure what a 10 year warranty has to do with anything. The issue I speak of is about the horrible treatment of breeder dogs in mills. This isn't about getting my 'money's worth' from a puppy sale from a warranty. Happy to eat my words though. If the owner wants to have a discussion and prove his/her claims. I'm sure a pet store who solely shut down 29 mills would have had some local press. This business should be named Stinky Stop. I used to buy a dog treat there for my LhasaPoo because I couldn't find it anywhere else. They no longer carry it and I'm actually glad. Now I don't have to go in there anymore. Every time I've been in Pet Stop the smell is horrible. I don't know whether it's the monkey, or just lots of animals not being kept in a clean environment. I would try to get in and out as fast as possible and hold my breath as long as I could. I always felt like the smell was in my clothes and in my hair. Disgusting and sad for the animals. read more

This is my absolute favorite pet store in Kansas City. The owners are very knowledgeable and the employees have always been friendly and helpful. They have a huge variety of animals, from fish to reptiles to rodents to birds to puppies and kittens - plus all the food, cages, and accessories to go with them. I highly recommend Pet Stop for your pet needs. Several other reviewers complain about kids poking their fingers in the monkey cage, and somehow that's the fault of the store? How about blaming the parents who just drop their kids off like it's a daycare and leave? read more

I haven't been there in two to three years but based on reviews it hasn't changed much if at all. I went in infrequently if I needed something and happened to be right by there. They kept their rats in horrible tanks, dozens of them all cramped into "small, medium, and large". While people do use rats as feeders, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be kept in humane conditions. Rats have sensitive respiratory systems and fish tanks are terrible for them not to mention the terrible overcrowding. One day I stopped in and a rat was laying, dying in a tank. I immediately told one of the long-time female employees who was leaning behind the register and she said "I'll take it to the back", and continued to lean. I wandered around another ten minutes and she continued to lean. I know it's a rat but no animal deserves that treatment. It should have been removed and euthanized to spare its suffering. You must not have a heart to let any animal lay there and suffer. I haven't stepped foot in the place since. They keep their puppies in little cages with wire floors which is terrible for puppy paws. Just a bad, dirty, smelly place. Ugh, I can't believe I ever gave them my money. read more

I only come here for feeder rats, which are very overpriced; $10 for a large one. Everything about this place sucks: everything is overpriced, they sell dogs which are probably from a puppy mill/shady breeder, but the worst is the monkey they keep in a cage. He is aggressive towards customers, and looks totally stressed and unhappy. I hate coming here, but very few places stock feeders. read more

Nice people but the puppies are expensive. Yes there is a 10 year warranty but this place seems to have a reputation of having sickly pups. I would possibly consider purchasing a pup if I had hard proof that they were not from a mill, price was lowered and I could get them checked by my own vet first. I've heard that these are mill pups from a former employee. Hope that's not true but unfortunately most of the time a reputable breeder will not sell to pet stores. read more
