Died within 16 hours. Employee of Pet topia sold me plankton to put in my tank with the new fish i just purchased. I did as he suggested and the next morning $600 worth of fish are dead. The store manager told me the plankton used all the oxygen in the tank and killed the fish. She didn't care that I was following her employee's recommendations. read more

I wanna love this store, I really do. First impression is that they are well stocked, have lots of variety of fish, reptiles, pet food, etc. But once you actually start looking around it gets worse and worse. The ferrets cage has not been cleaned in WEEKS. I have gone back multiple times throughout this past month and the cage is disgusting. The lizards are all jammed into one enclosure and most of them look sick or on the verge of death. I bought two salt water clowns, one died a week after bringing it home. All my water parameters were great. I've also had other friends mention their fish they have bought from this store have not been in the best of health. This was my first time going to this store. I love the set up and think the store set up is great. Everybody is very friendly and helpful. I ended up buying 6 African cichlids but all 6 died within 4 days of me having them. I mean literally bought them on Saturday 10/21 and they were all dead by 10/25. Just all of a sudden. Water parameters were fine. I actually had them quarantined in a 20 gallon tank (thank God). I'm so glad I didn't put them in my main tank. I don't think I'll be going back. Losing one fish is one thing, but losing 6 doesn't sit well with me. Plus, it's a drive for me to purchase fish just for them to not last. read more

A great store! I bought a Russian Tortoise on August 3rd, and he was very healthy! Active, alert, and nails were a good size. The store keepers gave all correct information, and did not try to sell stuff I did not need. The prices were good to! 130$ for a Russian Tortoise? Very good deal! I saw at other places it was 200$. The supplies were good! They had tortoise pellets, calcium powder, hides, water ramp bowl, everything I needed for my Russian Tortoise. 10/10 recommend. read more

I went in here and was horrified. This place is worse than petco. They have at least 20 leopard geckos in a 15 gallon tank. More than half of them are missing they're tails and the rest have metabolic bone disease. There was at least 5 crested geckos in a 10 gallon tank, one of them had tail rot and another had an infection where it's tail used to be. There was A DEAD RED EYED TREE FROG just sitting in the cage for what looked like days. They're iguanas have stuck shed all over them. This is THE WORST PET STORE IVE EVER BEEN TOO. They should have animal control called on them for how abusive they are towards their animals. I am disgusted and horrified at how nasty this place is. read more

I'm so happy I shopped at pet topia. I absolutely love buying sick fish and being told that with so many fish they don't know what they're selling you. On top of that, their manager is a complete angel and likes to blame customers, call them "Karen's" and tell them to go to big box stores. They admit to selling sick fish, and if your nitrates are high, they blame you for killing the already sick and nibbled on fish they purposely sold you (don't tell me that out of 3 fish, 2 obviously healthy and 1 obviously dying, you didn't purposely pick the sick one to get rid of on your big buy 3 get 1 sale day). Yes, you're right, fish hobbyists go to pet stores to buy sick fish and nurture them back to health. I refuse to ever step foot in this store if their own manager doesn't know when his fish are sick and dying. This was a first and now last of ever buying fish here. Please people, go to Miles of Exotics, take the trip to Lawrence. They are reputable. They also are WAY more knowledgeable, and give amazing service. Pet-Topia sees you just as another number, not as a customer they enjoy seeing and coming back. Extremely disappointed. I purchased 10 fresh water fish on the 15th of March and within 5 days they all died. I kept the dead fish in a container as every day there was a new one or two dead. I then took the fish, a water sample and my receipt back in after the weekend to discuss the issue. Since they come with a warranty i was extremely surprised when i was told there was nothing the store could do and i should have called as soon as it happened. This store is a joke and I will never by fish or any pet supplies from here again. I would urge you to not try the new spot and stick to a reputable store. This is the only fish store I will ever go to in the Kansas City area. First off, the fish and plants I get from here are always healthy and never have any issues. The store is stocked with tons of variety and the prices are good for quality fish. The thing that impresses me the most though is the employees here. The owner, Chris, is very knowledgeable and nice. I talked one of the employees', Chase, ear off for at least an hour and he never once acted like I was wasting his time and answered all of my questions. He took the time to show me examples of fish and plants in tanks on his phone, recommended me fish that would actually work in my tank and told me why rather than just tried to move stock like many chain pet stores. Really went the extra mile to make me feel like an important customer and really listened to all of my ramblings. Another employee, Zoey, is also always extremely nice and helpful when I come in. When we bought our iguana, she told us everything we needed to know and showed us pictures of her iguana and the setup for her. She is always willing to talk with you and is a truly wonderful staff member. Everyone here truly cares about the environment the animals are going into when they find new homes and won't just sell you animals that you don't have the correct set up for in order to make more money. Chris seems to really take care to employ people who know what they're talking about and care about the customers and the animals. I have had my 100 gallon salt water tank up and running for 5 years. Several of my fish were the originals and had remained healthy the entire time. Early August I received a new fish as a gift which was purchased at Fishtopia. Two weeks later my fish started dying one by one including the newly purchased fish. My entire established tank was wiped out in a very short time. This experience has been devastating and I would not recommend purchasing any fish from Fishtopia. read more

The shop is always fun to go into, employees are always friendly and very helpful and I really like that the shop owners are almost always there. We spoke with Chris a few times when we were looking into getting a snake and he took the time to talk to us and gave us a lot of important information we needed. Even after telling him that we wouldn't be purchasing for a few weeks still, he spoke with us for a while and answered every single question we had without making us feel rushed or pressured into buying right away. You can tell that his concern is helping to figure out if you're ready for a certain pet, if they'll be a good fit for your home, and that the animals he has in the shop are going to be happy and well taken care of once they leave. It is obvious that their priority at Pet-topia is making sure you have all the information and everything needed in order to be happy and have a happy pet, not just pushing sales and leaving you to figure everything else out on your own.
