Just stopped in with a friend after Mildred's. This place was fine until my friend and I were looking at the fresh food fridge. I was looking at the bags to see if there was fresh cat food. My friend and I had been talking looking at the bags and hadn't heard the lady running the store. All of a sudden out of nowhere I hear a very hateful raised voice say "I've asked you 5 times if you're looking for price" I looked at her and told her 1) we never heard her the first time 2) to never speak to her customers in that hateful tone again. I was about to buy treats and fresh cat food. Because of her hatefulness I set everything down and walked my happy butt out. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO BUY FROM KIND LOCAL OWNERS. THIS LADY WAS GOD AWFUL TO BE AROUND AND I WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK. I WILL ALSO TELL EVERYONE I KNOW HOW TERRIBLE THAT LADY WAS. Other reviews mention unwelcoming and rude behavior. This lady is obviously a huge problem! I have since read other reviews and believe that we did experience passive aggressive behavior and feel like we were being judged for what we look like. Shop local at this locally owned pet shop. I don't have a dog, but every time a friend adds some fur to their family, I try to buy them a little gift from Tail Waggin'. They have some of my favorite toys to gift doggos. My boyfriends parents dog totally tore up the little stuffed reindeer we got him from here (in a good way). They also have a great variety of treats. The best part about Tail Waggin' is the staff. The staff are so kind, considerate, knowledgeable, and helpful, without being intrusive. I am so glad I have the local Kansas City gem - Tail Waggin' PetStop - in my neighborhood! I sometimes get nervous about parking in the busy Crossroads, but Tail Waggin' has parking spots reserved for customers in a lot north of the store, just a few steps away. I have a dog and a cat and Tail Waggin' has everything I need. They have tons of high quality food brands. BUT, my (and my pets') favorite sections are the treats and the toys!! I like getting the Bosco & Roxy's cookies (the fun shapes change every season) for special occasions, chews, catnip toys and Kong items. I have a chihuahua but they have mini versions of Kongs and balls as well as the full-size versions! I love that they have KC Chiefs and Royals gear!! Finally, the DIY bathing area is really nice. Being able to wash my pup with their shampoo, use their towels to dry off, and not have to clean up my whole bathroom at home after is WONDERFUL! :) read more

I adore that this place exists. It's small but carries the necessities that we need for our little pet cat. It's only a couple blocks off the streetcar stop and they even have dedicated parking (practically unheard of in this part of town!) So, sure, it's no PetSmart with their warehouse sized store and back-stock, but if you want to support local and need the essentials, this is a wonderful place to patronize. I come here for cat food, litter and the occasional toy and the workers are always friendly. Last time I was in, I had my one-year old daughter with me and the guy who rang me up even carried the litter out to my car for me! It's service like that that has had me coming back for years. read more

We stopped in after eating at Papa Keno's across the street from them. The kids wanted to see animals, but they do not sell any at this shop. What they do sell is amazing high quality pet goods. I found some great treats for my little fur buddy that will help with his hips and a couple of nice toys. The gentleman who I think may have been an owner, also had his little fur guy there and both were really friendly. What truly makes this shop is it is a small guy, not the pet superstore we usually have in the burbs, but a nice small mom and pop store. I also feel this is why we got the amazing service we did, because not only are pets their passion, so is the shop. So far the treats are a big hit so we are definitely going back for more from them. read more

I went in to find dental treats for my dog. They didn't have the specific brand I was looking for but still was planning on getting something and we even had the product recommend to us in our hand, until a woman helping me was incredibly rude for literally no reason. She was asking where I get my dog food after I asked her why she doesn't carry merrick and I told her chewy, and she then responded "well go ask chewy then" and abruptly walked away. This was after she assumed I bought my dog food from Walmart and that I lived in Kansas City. I'm sure if I had actually asked chewy I would've gotten it answered in a respectful and helpful way. read more

I was in town from Dallas and didn't have a car and had no idea where to get dog food. My dad was in the hospital and it was all such a mess for me personally. From the time they answered the phone to us leaving, it was nothing but exceptional help and service. We adopted a dog three months ago and this was his first bath with us and they made sure we could have the best experience possible. We havr found our place to go. The location also happens to be right across the street from a coffeehouse to top off the experience. 1) The owner knows more about dog food/dog nutrition than our vet (vets like doctors don't seem to know much at all about nutrition and just hawk whatever brand pays them). I sent an email to the owner once trying to decide between two very high end dog foods and he broke down the pros and cons of both in DETAIL. 2) They are organized. They will keep track of any volume discounts for dog food and pass it through to the customer; they also have a frequent rewards program as well and they don't put the onus on the customer to hold on to a punch card. 3) They have a great selection of toys, chews - I think all are high quality and some are locally sourced. I don't think there is anything there that contains questionable ingredients or companies represented that have amoral business practices (well maybe Blue Buffalo- not sure they even still carry that). I do think Three Dog Bakery has a cuter selection of collars though (not that much cuter tho!) 4) The dog showers are clean, affordable and if they aren't busy they volunteer to help. Unlimited soap and towels. I wouldn't say the dogs love it - but I sure do. 5) Commitment to community - I foster rescued a boxer and our first stop was to get a bath at Tail Waggin' Pet Shop (and a cute collar). We (I say we b/c one of the employees there helped me the entire time) had to wash this stinky guy 3-4x. After all of that and perhaps half a bottle of shampoo - they gave me the wash on the house. 6) They don't sell puppies there. Thank God. B/c that would mean they were sourcing dogs from puppy mills or puppy auctions (even worse). Let's shop local - no reason not to when you have a place like this to meet your furry family's members needs. Its definitely a place for those who consider their pets family and who are looking for the best (and willing to pay up for quality) for them. I feel a bit bad for giving 3 stars, which is why it isn't only 2 stars. My goal was to find a pet store that was not big box and has a decent selection. City pets in Westport was closed today because of water damage, so the hunt started. This was not what I wanted. There's minimal street parking, but I got the best spot - Sunday afternoon and all. The layout and cleanliness was superb. So, this is a good place for high end and expensive dog and cat supplies. If you are looking for a sun lamp for your iguana, forget it because they don't even have flake fish food. The prices on the food bags weren't marked on the shelf. You have to turn over each bag. Price isn't number one on the decision list for me, but it isn't an afterthought. I want to know what I'm spending at a glance. To me, this is very off putting. I did find food I frequently buy, but at $8 more per bag than I usually pay. The staff was friendly, but for me, too friendly. 3 people greeted me as I walked in and one led me to the section I was interested in. After browsing for 10 seconds, a 4th staff asked me what food I was looking for. There were no other customers. I felt smothered. One person can greet me and ask if I want help. After that, let me browse in peace and ask questions if I have them. So, they had 1 of the 4-5 things I was looking for, and it was overpriced. I ended up going all the way out to Ward Parkway. Too bad, l was hoping to find a centrally located pet store. I found a dog & cat boutique. If that's what you want and want to feel as special as you try to make fluffy feel with gluten free locally sourced whatever at a markup higher than most places I've been, then this is your store. read more

Went in for the bathing area. Took a while to get used to. Bathed my 97 lb Great Pyrenees. The suction cup lead was making me nervous but my dog is pretty obedient so he calmed down after a few minutes. The store staff helped me the first few minutes until more customers came in which I appreciated. They have one tiny dryer which I was afraid wouldn't do the trick for my big guy but it actually got him pretty dry. I dried him in the tub a little but let him hop out & held him since we were the only people in the room. Bought 3 Raw Turkey Necks for $12!!!!! I will definitely be back! read more

I love having this pet shop in the downtown area because otherwise you have to travel a bit to get to another one. The owners are always super nice and very helpful. I always just grab the same things so I'm usually in and out pretty quickly, but if it's your first time there they are more than willing to help you find what you need. One of my cats was having some tummy issues recently and they suggested that I add some pumpkin to his food to help with digestion so I think they are pretty knowledgeable. We always purchase the My BFF wet cat food here and it is priced a little bit cheaper than the previous pet store we used to shop at. There aren't as many flavors here but they still offer a variety of five different ones. We used to feed our cats Taste of the Wild dry food until we learned that it's been recalled many times and often causes cats to throw up a lot, so we decided to switch to Fromm and we really noticed a change. I can tell our male cat enjoys this brand way more and they rarely throw up their dry food anymore. (I know, tmi but I was tired of cleaning up cat puke!) Taste of the Wild is priced pretty well here but we have noticed that Fromm is actually quite a bit more expensive. I am guessing the location has something to do with pricing because it's a more expensive area to rent, but Fromm is about $12 more than another store located in the suburbs. I will probably still continue to buy from Tail Waggin' however because I want to support their store and it's also just really convenient for me because it's so close. Like most pet stores, it mostly caters to dogs but they do have a nice cat selection of toys, food, litter, healthcare, dental, and scratchers. I've never not found something I needed for my cats here. If you have dogs, they make cute little dog cookies and they also have a wash area where you can bring your dog for a bath! read more

Here's another example of the Crossroads trying to take care of its own. I was actually shocked to see a pet shop tucked away among the restaurants and galleries, and stopped in looking for a stocking stuffer for my cockatiel. Turns out they only serve dogs and cats, but the girl minding the store was so friendly I looked around a little bit anyway, and left with Christmas cookies for the dogs instead. They seem to do a lot in the way of organic and high-end food, which would bankrupt me (two 70-pounders), but I'm sure it serves pet owners in this neighborhood well. Dogs are welcome, and a woman brought her dog with her to pick up food she had obviously called to order. They have lots of chews and cute toys, and apparently a dog washing station, too. The store is clean and well organized, and the staff are fun to talk too. Just wish they catered to my bird, too! read more

We're those weird people who feed our cat food that costs like $40 a bag (he's our family, okay) and since moving to KC our choices have basically been a) drive to Brookside or b) order online. So I was walking down Wyandotte a few weeks back and saw the Tail Waggin' Pet Stop and thought "Huh, that's a silly name" and then "I wonder if they carry our very specific, high-end cat food brand." And they DO! Food prices are pretty similar to what the Barkery charges but I agree with Amanda - the toys and catnip and things like that are much more reasonably priced. I love shopping at small businesses whenever I can, which is why I've always been more likely to head over to the Barkery than have the Kitty's food delivered from Amazon or whatever, so it's fantastic to have another option in a much different part of town. I hope this place does well and sticks around for the long haul. read more

So, as I mentioned before...(okay, we get it, you moved...)...we just MOVED to Columbus Park from Leawood/Prairie Village and we are treating it like we moved to China. So we are currently finding 'stuff' that we used to find in PV/Leawood places closer to us...and sometimes, we just accidentally drive to the old house after work and end up running some errands... So, it's great that THIS place exists. They have the same dog food that we feed our dogs (5 different kinds for 3 dogs) and were incredibly friendly when we dropped by on a Sunday afternoon. The owners moved here from Washington DC and opened the store not long ago. It's kind of exactly what we need and hopefully what a lot of other people in this area need too. The dog toy selection is limited BUT I would imagine with demand comes product. :) read more

There aren't a lot of options for downtowners to buy items for their pets, and I think most people expect this place to be way more expensive than PetSmart and other chain stores because of its location. Well, it's true that they only carry top-of-the-line food brands. If that's not what you normally buy, you're probably out of luck on food purchases. However, I've been pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced snacks/toys/other items are. I've almost exclusively purchased bones/rawhides/non-daily food items from this store since it opened. I've also stopped by on the way home from a particularly muddy trip to the dog park for the self-wash stations to avoid getting any of the dirt in my condo. Shampoo and aprons provided, and for the price, it was worth not having to clean up afterward! This is a regular stop for me after picking my dog up from daycare around the corner. This is a great store! I'm so glad to have a really nice, local, pet store in the Crossroads. They have a really great selection of high quality dog foods, and are very knowledgeable about pet nutrition, and the products they carry. I have come in several times asking about food for our dog, and the owners were great in answering questions. The one time they didn't know, they went to do some research for me. They seem to really love pets, and have a vested interest in helping you out to the best of their ability. Super cute store, and lots of great products. I love this place and I'm so glad there's another locally owned store in the Crossroads that I can support. Alan and Mary are the best. We bring our dogs in to get baths all the time. There are tubs that you use to wash your dogs along with a myriad at shampoo options. Once you're done, they supply you with towels and a great air dryer thing so that you can give your dog a blow out (or just dry their hair). We've shown up 15 minutes before closing sometimes and Alan never rushes us. I feel like their dog food selection is carefully curated and always stocked with great options for dogs with special dietary needs. You can't find Purina here. At any given time, you'll also find Rusty sunbathing near the front door. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. It's our go-to dog store and a place I reccommend to all my dog-loving friends. read more

Not wanting to drive the opposite way from work, I searched and found that this store has the food too! I went on my lunch break and was happy with the prices and the selection of items. Stumbled in here the other day and thought Dog Gone It! (see what I did there?) This place is freaking adorable. Allen is the owner, and is super nice and really knows the products he is selling. Being a cat lady, I wanted to find my furry kids something that reminded them I love them more then any man I will ever meet. I found a fun little cat nip toy and some raw freeze dried cat food. Allen really informed me all about raw diets and was very helpful. They have really unique and fab pet food dishes, beds, and leashes. It is definitely not a place you run into for Whiskers cat food, but more a Neiman Barkus of pet supplies. I think they are a great addition to the neighborhood and their selection of natural , super quality pet foods cannot be beat. read more
