These folks know their aquascaping. Their prices indicate they're proud of that which they offer, but it's all premium stuff. I'd advise taking care with fish- they use RO water, so drip acclimation will be necessary if you're on KC tap water. The Pygmy's cories I got from them were healthy, but they needed a slow acclimation to be put into my quarantine. They're now in the display. They're knowledgeable about their fish and plants (I'd assume salt water as well, but I don't have a saltwater tank, so I can't say one way or the other). The plants I've purchased from them have been great, except for one buce brownie tissue culture that melted and hasn't come back, but apparently my tank doesn't like buce, because I've tired multiple times, and buce melts and never come back, so I don't fault them for that. Their plants are nearly always in good shape and happy. I did buy some downoi that was super leggy, and so I trimmed it to use only the best of it. It's there, in the tank, and I'm watching to see what it does. But the tissue culture of the downoi I got from them really took off, and is propagating just fine. Their cost is in line with online sellers when you factor in shipping. I'll continue to use them. I've been pleased with the knowledge of the employees and their locality. read more

Went to this store this weekend and was really disappointed by how the owner, Courtney, spoke to the employees. Most of the staff appeared to be young adults, and the way she spoke to them felt unprofessional and inappropriate in front of customers. The employees themselves were polite and helpful, but the overall atmosphere was uncomfortable because of the owner's behavior. read more

Moved to the Lenexa area this last month and am so glad I found Picasso Aquatics. They helped me get everything I needed to get my tank back up and running after the move. They also have a super cool monthly membership which I'd never seen before and with all the cool perks it came with it was a no brainer for me to set up a membership myself. Went in for the first time to get help setting up my tank. Staff seemed knowledgeable and recommended two different plants to help my tank get set up (all were pretty pricey for small plants) and within a week two of them died, despite water treatment and quickstart chemicals. I called and asked just to exchange the dead ones since they were so expensive and I had already spent so much there on just plants and a piece of wood, they said they don't do that. I won't be back, i tried to support this small business despite its prices but to sell a plant that dies quickly after recommending it for being tough in a new tank and then not taking care of a first time customer, no thank you. read more

No thank you! My husband and I brought our 3 kids in ready to purchase fish as our first pet. Well 3 workers were trying to wrangle a fish from the big tank and one half assed said hello. We roamed around for about 15 minutes and no one came to assist us. I approached them and kindly asked for help as we would have a lot of questions for first time fish owners. They said they would be with us shortly. Another 15 minutes goes by and no one came to help us. We decided to leave and not one peep from the workers as we walked by them. Poor kiddos left sad, but didn't make a fuss at all. You can imagine a 7,5,1 year old's disappointment and not getting to ask about any fish or walk out with anything. So we ended up at PetSmart and spent $120, no fish yet as we still needed more time to ready our tank. We did go home with snails and decor to help speed the process along. THE place for freshwater aquarists. They had some of the most beautiful aquascapes I've seen in person. They are for sale by the way! Their freshwater expert does all of the aquascapes himself and is a walking plant tank encyclopedia. If you've ever had a high-tech planted tank (co2, lighting, etc), or are interested in starting one, he is the person to talk to. The plants for sale were huge and very healthy. If my tank weren't already full I would have taken a few home. I've been all over the city to various places, and some are good, but nothing (and I do mean nothing) compares. Yea don't bother even coming into this "fish shop". Not only do they have little to no aquarium accessories and dead/dying unhealthy looking fish. Not once but twice have I been disappointed by this place, I called once to ask if they had certain types of fish is stock and I was told that they DID INDEED have the certain fish I was looking for, well upon making the long drive up there NO they did not have the fish in stock apparently they sold them the day prior. Really??? Did they even bother checking ? Secondly they are absolute SCALPERS with their prices. They tried charging me 83.99!! for ONE piece of manzanita wood which is HILARIOUS because I literally had gotten about 6 different pieces of manzanita wood of the same size from a different pet store the day before when I mentioned this I was met with a smarty alecky response from the lady checking me out. Just spent at least an hour talking to an employee named Drew. Honestly, I'm amazed at the time he invested troubleshooting and giving his suggestions on a sick Betta that I didn't even purchase at their store. He gave me a ton to think about and was incredibly gracious when I decided not to make a purchase in the moment and go home to figure out what I wanted to do. We've been in the store a couple of times and have had to ask for help vs. having an employee approach us, which is the opposite of what I'm used to from my retail days. However, when you do ask, the employees are kind of amazingly focused on helping whoever they with at the moment, which makes you feel like a million bucks when it's you. **edited a week later** came back for some more help with my sick Betta. Grant helped me this time. Really nice, gave me a lot of info and advice. There were several workers here ready to assist. Honestly, knowing you need to ask for help is great for me because when I want it, I want it, and when I want to be left alone, I don't want anyone asking if I need help. I have worked in the service industry my entire life so I am very aware of what Customer service means . ....especially with a five year old by your side! We visited Picasso Aquatics for the first time today and have definitely found our new go-to local fish/aquarium store! We are new to the hobby and have been to about 4 other aquarium specialty stores in the KC area just trying to learn more and figure out what we wanted to start with for our 75 gal fresh water aquarium. Several of those other stores seemed to be annoyed by our questions or didn't really give much information. Dan at Picasso was by far the most helpful, patient, and knowledgeable professional we have spoken to so far. He took time to answer all of our questions, gave our 4 yr old a tour of the store, and just made the experience overall amazing! Wow! We just went in here for fun and ended up having a very pleasing experience. I am a novice aquriest, and they were very helpful. They were not condescending just because I am not an expert. They also offer maintainance if you are not a DIYer. They have little and large tanks. They will sell you just the tank or the display set ups. They had both fresh and salt water fish, and the place was immaculate. It is high end, aquarium art. This is NOT your average fish store. The owner was trying to take a different approach to aquarium keeping; she was fusing art and fish, and she was successful. I suggest a walk-through, even if you are not in want of a fish or tank. Alright, I'm not going to judge a store solely on the tax bracket of their target market. They have some very nice stuff, particularly their coral farms (for lack of a better term). It's interesting to look at that and imagine how something like coral is cultivated, and thus MAYBE worth their super high price tags? I found this place on yelp while trying to find other stores in the area that have fresh water fish and plants to sell to the public. I read the reviews and though they weren't all stellar I decided to check the place out for myself. I'm so glad I did! Until coming to Picasso I had yet to find a store that actually took the time to set up multiple aquariums with live plants. There are some bizarre reviews for this place. It's called exotic aquariums for a reason, but people rate poorly because they don't like the price? We first came here about 4 years ago and got a betta fish that lasted 3 years, which is insanely long for those guys. The crew they helped us even with such a dinky fish were super nice and answered our boatload of questions. If you ever decide to upgrade they have a wide range of fish, salt and fresh water based, plants and aquariums. People seem to complain and focus only on the highest prices in the store, but it's clear this store cares about fish. read more

Bought a few neon tetras from here, and now my tank is infested with ich. I'm assuming they knowingly sold me sick fish, but I hope not. My betta I've had for nearly a year died because of it. From now on I'll be sure to quarantine new fish, but I don't think I'll be going here ever again. For being so overpriced, you'd think they'd give you higher quality fish but apparently not. I'm a beginner when it comes to understand fish, and the maintenance needed for aquariums. I have found myself in this store 4 times in the past month. It is such an incredible atmosphere and the staff has helped me correct my aquarium through the corse of over a month. The staff has remembered who I was and my tank including the next steps for my aquarium. They truly made sure that I wasn't bringing home anything until I had my tank right. Staff is super knowledgeable and friendly however it can be pricy, I have only found my expense coming from products that have truly turned my aquarium around. Including information and guidance that I wouldn't have had if I just "ordered online". They know what they're doing, and you can tell all the staff members have a passion for what they do. read more

I've brought my kids in here a couple of times in the past to look at the fish and decided we would buy a small aquarium. I was blown away by the extremely arrogant employees there. Maybe I wasn't dressed up enough, as we had come from my kids baseball game, but it took 10 minutes (timed it) for someone to check in on us. Once I did, I started asking questions about maintenance, tanks, fish assortment to get idea of what way we wanted to go but the gal seemed to have little interest in our discussion. After that interaction, I spoke to someone else and they told the first person owned the place. Just blown away. Guess those spots on Good Morning America, the Today Show and channel 9 are doing well enough to keep them a float. read more

Tanks are clean and fascinating to observe, but that's about it. I was clearly an inconvenience to their store and day. Waited for 30 minutes to buy plants and multiple discus ($70+ fish). While I was waiting I noticed the majority of their freshwater fish had ick and were dying, but I figured I would give their discus a chance. Finally got tired of waiting and left. I had an opportunity to visit their shop last night, and thought I would provide a short review of what I found. The layout of the tanks and supplies was well thought out, but certainly not the most efficient. I believe they target the more upscale clientele rather than the advanced aquarist. As a previous reviewer noted, their prices on tanks have about a 125% markup on them. For instance, a JBJ Nano 12g was $480 with the stand. You can find these online for half that with a free stand. None of the livestock or supplies were priced, so I can only assume they charge what they feel they can get out of the customer. The selection of marine fish, coral, invertebrates and macro algae was quite limited, but they did have a large supply of clown species. Most of the display tanks were very poorly kept - especially for a company that specializes in setting up and maintaining systems for homes and businesses. Nearly all of the tanks, sans a few of their main display tanks, were blanketed in cyano. Most of the live rock was covered in hair algae and bryopsis, and there was far too much Caulerpa in many of the tanks. I only noticed a couple sick fish. With as little foot traffic as they seem to get, I would expect the tanks to be immaculate. They did have some nice sargassum and several large and healthy looking clams, but again, none of them were priced. All of the tanks had a hodgepodge of lighting, most of it low end LED, and a couple of T5 setups. The freshwater displays used artificial plants for the most part, and there were only a couple displays that were nicely done. As already said, there was nothing there that couldn't be purchased much cheaper anywhere else, and based on their husbandry practices, I wouldn't rely on them for advice or support of my systems. I give them 1 star because they actually make the local Petco look good. read more

Never seen such active and beautiful fish To see betas fish so active and lively you know they are doing something right. Every time I have been in the workers are SUPER knowledgeable and I ask lots of question and they are willing to help on everything. A lot of reviews on here saying how expensive the fish are I feel like they are quite fair. My last fish was 26$ and I saw the same fish 60$ at another store. Over all passionate people for the love of fish love it only negative is there is hardly any decor for your tanks. read more

I am a client. This is not a typical fish store. Dan is the best person to talk to about fish and coral as he's friendly and will help you make good choices for your tank. Jason is an excellent resource if you are wanting to talk about a big tank and what it takes to make it work long term. He can also be good resource for day to day choices of fish and coral I agree that sometimes it takes a long time in this store just to do a quick stop, make a choice and leave, but if you want that I'd go to pet smart or another store that just wants to sell you whatever you want. You may regret your choice when it eats your coral or kills your other fish though. I think overall this store is a case of you get almost what you pay for. Many stores are 1/2 the price but if they lowered price about 20-30% the customer service and quality would make up for them still being slightly more than the other guys in town. I would very much like to see them have more consistency in stock and better logistics/service in some areas. If they did that they would get 5 stars. They do a good job caring for my tank and are competitively priced for this service. Overall I'm very happy working with them. read more

Not impressed. It is not your average fish store but not because it's being overly artistic . . .it's their larger than life pricing. I figured I was going to spend more because we moved from Florida back to KC but when I see other local stores at half the price I realized something was up. There are stores in business for the business and those in business for the hobby. The store is clean and the staff is relatively friendly when the snotty female owner is not in. The problem is the rent in that area must be astronomic for what they are charging on items. The selection of fish is just average for what any other store would carry instead of some real nice pieces that have your standard fish items. I went to Paradise as well and they are pretty decent and have a few different types of fish to offer. As far as the best in town I believe that Aquariums Wholesale takes the cake. That store was very cluttered and not the cleanest but the staff was friendly and down to earth. I even got a personal invitation from a local sw website. . . .my wife and I went to check it out and dropped a few hundred. Chevron Tang, African Flameback Angel, and they were successfully keeping a Moorish Idol. I suggest going to the shop that knows fish and wants to promote the hobby not these yahoos that just want to be expensive to make a profit. Waste of time to browse at this store. read more

Don't be fooled by the glitz and glamour of the location. The place is extremely over-priced. Terrible customer service (was in there for 20 minutes and not one employee could be found for help). I ended up leaving, and went and got what I needed elsewhere. Which is fine, there were dead fish in 3 of the tanks. Cool place to bring out of towners, but for those actually interested in the hobby, go some place else that cares about customers not spectators. read more
