I am beyond heartbroken and angry over the care my father received at Petaluma valley hospital. this was the worst hospital experience I have ever witnessed. my dad was completely neglected by both nurses and doctors, my father died because of their lack of care. the nurses never checked on him unless I constantly called and reminded them. the doctors were ever hardly around, and when they were, they made sarcastic remarks and spoke to my father in a way that was sarcastic and demeaning- as if he was not worthy of patience or compassion. one moment that will FOREVER stay with me was when a nurse was about to give my unconscious father a pill to swallow. I had to step in and suggest a cream instead because he was clearly unable to take anything by mouth. the fact that I had to advocate so strongly for basic, safe care is unacceptable. No family should have to beg for attention or dignity of their loved one. thus hospital's level of neglect is outrageous. patient's deserve compassion, respect, and proper medical care, and my father received NONE of that. I went in for unknown stomach pain, and they told me it was a stomach bug. I have been uncomfortable for the past week, but when I left that ER, I felt like a whole new person. Avoid this ER at all costs, worst patient care I've ever witnessed (not only for me but the other individuals that were also there). The ER staff (mainly nurses, assisting staff, doctor, etc.) were too busy gossiping about their personal lives instead of administering attention and care to ER patients. I also directly witnessed one male nurse making fun of and laughing at the incoherent patient next to me stating "he sounds like my old dog" because the guy was intermittently making noise (I'm assuming due to being uncomfortable or in pain). That's the type of shit people get fired for, and in my opinion shouldn't be tolerated. Bedside manners - 0. Patient care - 0. Timeliness of results/doctor updates - 0. Professionalism - 0. Excellent experience in the ER with reception (no wait), Chris - EKG specialist who also drew blood, Samantha - Nurse Practitioner, and Nurse Kami. ALL of these people were absolutely lovely, which makes a big difference in the E.R. and made a big difference for me. They were also incredibly professional and knowledgeable while being kind. The poor reviews for Petaluma Valley Hospital speak for itself. I honestly would rather die than be admitted to this joke of a hospital. The nurses here are beyond useless, and the doctors here take their sweet, sweet time getting their work done. My mom was admitted here and after three hours of waiting in an ER bed, the results for the various tests that were ordered are still pending. Each hospital bed is equipped with a button you can press to call a nurse, but the button does nothing. If you need anything, too bad. The older red-head nurse I interacted with today propagated the lie that self-discharging before the doctor discharges you would result in insurance not paying for hospital costs. This is false -- just Google it. Avoid this place at all costs. This hospital represents everything that is awful about American healthcare. read more

The team at Petaluma Valley Hospital was made up of Petalumans, by that I mean competent, kind, caring people, most of which with a good sense of humor. I really liked the red letter signage that led me to the Emergency room. My one gripe was that I wish that there was a sign at the entrance to check in with "Registration." I was there about 10 minutes before I figured out I was wasn't in line and asked. (Registration is usually at the desk right as you walk in, this was more like where you pay. I'm guessing this is the COVID version. I interacted with the gal in registration who guessed I'd be there "an hour or two" so that my wife could go back home and get the pumpkin pies in the oven. She was right on the money. Then someone called me by my first name and I went through triage and we chatted about the prep time on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Then another kind person called out by my last name and brought me to the treatment room. My one gripe here is that because I have to wait it would have been nice to have a chair to sit on or a bed with the end raise so I could sit with back support. A first world problem! The treatment was great. My doc was Dr. Juliet Yuan, MD. Highly competent, answered my question (I have to cook thanksgiving dinner. Would you recommend glue or stitches?), great "bedside manner" and was willing to go along my approach of making getting a couple of shots of lidocaine to numb the wound area, and sew it up FUN. It continued on with the nurse that gave me my tetanus shot and the gal that took my vitals. And the even led me out to the waiting room. If not I'd still be wandering around trying to get out! Is it fun to go to the ER and experience all that an after dark ER waiting room brings? Not so much. But the folks I encountered had maintained their humanity. I've experienced the "burned out zombie staff" waiting rooms with treatment docs and nurses without kindness or sense of humor and who give me stink eye when I try to engage with them. It sucks. Spent six hours in the ER today with my elderly mother who cried out in pain and begged for something, anything to alleviate the severe cramps she was experiencing. Mostly ignored, they never gave her anything for pain, did not exhibit empathy, compassion or concern. Registration receptionist is completely useless and not helpful at all. Condescending, slow, bored and uninterested. My mother was begging to lie down, and her pleas for help fell on deaf ears. No sense of urgency from the staff or even desire to decrease her agony, fear, and pain. After my threats to take her out of the hospital and go somewhere else, the doctor finally came to speak with us. The Billing practices at this hospital for ER are PURE EVIL and completely unethical. On 8/10/22, my 2.5 year old son Jonas Woodard came to the ER to get stitches for a very small (1 cm long) cut above his right eyebrow. It was a very minor problem, but he needed stitches and the urgent care facilities were closed. We received the bill from the physician group the put in the stitches, the insurance contracted rate was $185.56, which is fine. That's a reasonable amount to pay doctors for doing stitches, so I'm okay with that. Then 8 months later (in April 2023) we finally get the bill from the hospital for the "facility fee" associated with that visit. The in-network contracted rate for that was $4,304.70, which is ABSOLUTELY INSANE considering the very minor procedure that was done (and the fact that we already paid the physicians who performed the procedure). Because we have a high deductible insurance plan we were responsible for paying most of this amount. When I looked at the Explanation of Benefits from my insurance company, I saw that the hospital had billed for "skin surgery" and that they had billed for CPT code 12013 which are for "repair of wounds that are 2.6 cm to 5.0 cm in size." They used this CPT code even though my son's cut was only 1 cm long and he needed only a couple of stitches. They used this more severe CPT code so that they could get more money, because they're in a position of power and they know that parents like me cannot agree to the price and code before we actually get the procedure done and so they can up-code with absolutely no consequences to them. I called them and very politely pointed out that they billed an extremely high amount given the procedure that was actually done and that they used a more severe CPT code than they should have. They said they would review my case, but then ultimately decided not to change it. I offered to show them a picture of my son's cut to show that it was only 1 cm and they refused. They just wanted their money. The hospital administrators who work here are GREEDY JERKS who see nothing wrong with charging families $4490 for simple stitches for a minor cut! What the heck is wrong with these people?! They couldn't even compromise and change the CPT code to the correct severity. I don't know how much that would have lowered the bill, but they just weren't willing to do it. This really shows you a lot about how completely horrible these people are. This is health care fraud, and they can do it because they're in a position of power. When your son has a cut and needs to go to the ER, you don't really have any choice. You're basically forced to pay $4490 for this stupid little procedure. It's ABSOLUTELY EVIL. Our health insurance system is so broken in this country and Petaluma Valley Hospital uses that fact to their advantage. They don't care about you. read more

I had toe joint replacement surgery scheduled to be done at the day surgery right next to the ER. The nurses there are very professional and super helpful. My Podiatrist pooped the bed on my surgery and left these poor nurses to deal with his incompetence. I have the utmost respect for them and the work they do, my podiatrist not so much. If you ever have the chance to get to go through there I am sure that you will enjoy their professionalism as much as I did. Waiting almost 8 hours to see if I had a broken rib And all of us in the ER waited for hours and hours. Skeleton staff of mostly useless apathetic sloppy disheveled doctors. I'm sad to say after living in Petaluma nearly 15 years I avoid this ER at all costs. Several Doctors were either outright mean or hateful to me. Dr Tavernetti and one other tall lankey, sun tanned unshaven short brown haired Dr in his late 50? or early 60s [looked like he spent alotof time drinking on a boat, if you know what I mean.] If you are a chronic pain patient they may treat u like a junkie loser, which is how they treated me at least 3 different times. Jabbing me in the spine and loudly "Is it broken!!! Is it broken!!! Is it broken!!!" when I could barely stand! I was hunched over my cane just to stand up and needed a wheel chair because I could not walk! I am not litigious but I should've sued that Dr! He refused to even give me a lidocaine shot! I wasnt even asking for opiates!!! He said "If you needed your finger reattached I could help you. I cant do anything." He didnt WANT to do anything. And the Dr in training who was taking notes was hiding her face! Because she was so ashamed of his hateful demeanor. Ive seen some reviewers claim that they treat POC badly... its not that... everyone gets treated badly here, doesnt matter what color you are. Not sure why the ER docs are so freakin mean here? The nurses and Dr. Aymal Tarrar were very kind when I brought my two year old son in when he was having an allergic reaction. They saw him right away and were very respectful and courteous, which is often not how ER staff act in my experience. The ER was very calm and comfortable. After my son received an injected antihistamine and oral steroid, he napped on top of me on the hospital bed, and he we awoke he was good as new. Many thanks to this ER for their service. read more

I will NEVER go to the Petaluma Hospital again. I went in for what I thought was pneumonia. It was 5:00 pm on a weekend and I was the only patient in the waiting room. I checked in and continued to ask about my wait until finally at 7:45 pm I was seen by the trauma nurse. She put the covid test strip up my nose and sent me back to the waiting room. At 8:15 I told the receptionist that I was leaving. She caught the doctor as he walked by and within 5 minutes I was taken back to the trauma room and the doctor gave me the diagnosis of RSV. I was then released. I later received a bill for $5,100!!! the insurance paid $2K and they want $3K from me. A JOKE!!! No Service but EXTRA ORDINARILY HIGH charges and I didn't even get INTO the emergency room. read more

I accidentally cut my hand and went straight to the ER. I was slightly concerned about billing since I have Kaiser, but the Kaiser hospital is a much further drive. The staff was extremely friendly and a nurse was waiting for me as soon as I left the front desk check in area. After answering some questions from the nurse, a PA helped out right away. All of the staff were really friendly, and I got 2 stitches and was in and out in about 30 minutes. Shocked to see bad reviews for the hospital! I'm sure there are busier nights, but I had the best ER experience I could ever hope for. Definitely recommend if you need emergency care. I just paid my ER copay and they handled the rest with Kaiser. It made my stressful day a whole lot less stressful! read more

Incompetent receptionist. 2. The facility is very dingy and dirty. 3. Aggressive and condescending triage staff member. 4. Doctor completely misdiagnosed me. I went to the ER 3 nights ago with severe pain, which turned out to be a kidney stone. I'm perplexed by the negative reviews. From the front desk, to the nurse that discharged me after they laser blasted the kidney stone, everyone, without exception, was kind, compassionate, helpful & competent. I felt very well cared for & had complete confidence in everyone. Everything was explained to me, all questions were answered & the staff made a point of reassuring me that I was in good hands. I feel that the people working at PVH are doing the work they were meant to do. You can't fake genuine kindness & compassion; that comes from the heart! Thanks again into each one of you for taking such good care of me. I should add that I was transferred upstairs to the main hospital & kept overnight. Kidney stone blasting was done the next day. We took my mom to Petaluma Valley Hospital. She had severe rib and under her breast pain. After 4 hours sitting in emergency they gave her morphine, took a quick xray and released her. 5 months later, took ambulance to hospital because of same pain plus hip and tailbone pain. Again, took xrays and sent her home with a "nothing wrong" diagnosis. This was extremely confusing. 2 days later, we called the ambulance to again take her to Memorial Hospital, we refused the ambulance to take her to Petaluma, though it is so much closer. Memorial hospital did xray, found broken rib and broken tailbone in 2 places. Memorial admitted her. Petaluma did not care about my mother. They didnt listen to her nor believe how much pain she was in. Very disgusted with our medical system and Petaluma Valley Hospital. read more

My husband and I visited the PVH ER on Nov 9 from 330-800pm. The ER was very crowded, and patients were prioritized according to medical acuity. It's a very challenging environment. That said, we found the staff to be professional, caring and proficient. RN's Melissa, Sarah, Hannah and Lina Pezzella MD were friendly, responsive and knowledgeable. We felt very confident in our medical care and discharge plan. The staff is under appreciated working in a stressful situation. One suggestion: have security present in the ER waiting area to deal with the some of the crazies, it makes normal people uncomfortable and scared. We consider this to be an essential service. Took my 3yr to the ER because he had a fever of 107. We finally left after 3-4 hours of not receiving care. This place is a complete joke.

Do not go to this hospital unless it is a major emergency. Took my daughter in for what I thought was a UTI (late night nothing else open, lessoned learned!!!!!) before we left the country. Not a UTI, but a minor ear infection. 1 hour wait, 30 mins with the physician and a $3k dollar bill from PVH and $250 bill from the MD. Utterly outrageous and this hospital should be investigated for over inflating their ER costs. read more

Went to PVH ER after a kitchen accident with a slicing mandolin that removed the fingertips of my right hand fingers. I was bleeding quite a bit, grabbed a kitchen towel and went to the closest ER. I did not wait long in the lobby ( I was making a bloody mess of the floor ), and after the admission process was given a plastic pad and a small ice pack and shown a gurney to lie on. There I stayed completely unattended for 3 hours. I got up twice and asked for additional ice packs to control pain and bleeding. NO ONE came into check on me. Finally at 6pm I heard the physician, while not even looking at me, say," will you clean that up so I can see it?" I was told to stand up, go to the sink and rinse. As I got up I was unsteady on my feet, the aide said, " Never mind, get back on the gurney." Another 20 minutes go by and completely different person brings a cardboard bowel and pours water into it and says " Soak". Another 20 minutes go by and they drop off some wound supplies in my cubicle and again disappear. Minutes later the RN comes in and once focused on my care she was apologetic and very nice. She applied "surgigel" to each wounded finger. Told me it was infused medical gauze that stops bleeding. She applied quite a bit of this stuff. She said it would just stay in place and as the wounds heal the gaze would fall off as a normal scab on a wound would. "Just leave it alone." I was loosely wrapped with gauze, given an antibiotic and told to pick up the rest at my pharmacy. Discharged with no further instruction. As I climbed into a friend's car to come home he noted blood still running down my arm. He went back and got additional bandages. As a retired ParaMedic he secured the dressing once home. NEXT STEP: I go into Kaiser 5 days later with my painful throbbing fingers. The first thing the wound center wants to do is soak off the now dried, stuck surigel gauze off the wounds. I explain I was told to leave them alone and they would fall off as the wounds healed. The supervising wound care nurse disagrees and looks the product up on her medical data website. She found it. Clearly states the product is used to control bleeding and should be left on no longer than 48 hours. So not only was I left completely unattended for 3 hours, once I did receive care I was given incorrect advice! I am now going to the Kaiser Wound Care site 2-3x/ week for wound care and dressing changes. I honestly believe I should have gone to an urgent care or all the way up to Kaiser's ER in Santa Rosa. I will not return to PVH ER again. read more

This is the worst experience at an emergency room that I've ever had. Urgent Care referred me to the hospital because my chest was burning and it was difficult to breath. The nurse who took me back didn't even acknowledge me she just took me to a room and threw a gown at me. I knew right then and there that I should have just walked out. Eventually she started talking and she was actually really nice but it didn't set the best tone. The worst was the Dr. who came in, Dr. Tavernetti, He was completely condescending and barely even asked me about my symptoms. He immediately went into a monologue about how it was most like anxiety because I'm a woman and "woman tend to get more anxiety" are you kidding me right now buddy!?!?!? He belittled me to the point that I was on the verge of tears and made me feel like I shouldn't be there. Basically my problem was completely made up in my head. As a reminder, I didn't want to be there, Urgent care told me to go. He told me he couldn't give me anything for my diagnosed anxiety which I told him I was 100% sure I didn't have. Finally he kind of sighed, rolled his eyes and ordered a chest x-ray, EKG and some labs. All of which took hours.... The girl that came into the EKG actually expressed frustration because she told me that the dr. had a horrible reputation in the ER for sending orders in at the last minute and making people sit. While i'm sure educated and intelligent, Dr. Tavernetti should not be practicing with a patient focus. He was sexist, demeaning and insensitive. Imagine if there would have been a patient with an actual mental health issue in the ER? How would they have felt with the same treatment? I spoke with another nurse later on who was empathetic and kind. The girl who took my blood, the ekg tech and even the nurse that was't warm and fuzzy at first were all great.
