My boyfriend and I were looking for a hamster to buy.. we spent some time taking a look at the options they had and when we finally chose which one we wanted I went to the cashiers to ask for assistance.. I told them we wanted a hamster and with this crappy attitude, the two people there said "we don't sell animals within an hour of closing".. they didn't even say they were sorry or anything!! This establishment is highly unprofessional and dirty, not only are most of the fishes dead, but the workers ignore the fact that they're dead and leave them in the tanks to rot. Customer service is very unprofessional, my daughter was yelled at by two employees and they told her that she wasn't eligible to buy a fish because our tank wasn't good enough. They made her return her fish and her temporary holding tank right after she had bought it. My 12 year old daughter was very emotional because this fish was important for her and her terminally ill aunt. When my daughter started crying, the employee was very rude and yelled at her, telling her that this wasn't a laughing matter. These employees have no empathy and abuse their power. read more

***UPDATE*** Talk about a NIGHTMARE experience! What a way to experience mothers day! We got to the emergency hospital (Pets Refferal Center) in Berkeley around 5:20 PM and finally saw my poor fur baby. He was in a kennel, blood on the towel and traumatized. We sat in the lobby for 3 1/2 hours before the vet was able to see us. While sitting in the lobby, the manager Kayla was there so nonchalant sitting w/her BF, holding hands and giggling. I didnt realize that this was a social visit!!! All the employees we dealt with at Alameda Petco Grooming were very unprofessional. No kind of empathy. Never once apologized. Finally got to see the vet. I was told that my babys dew claw was accidentally nipped. The vet had to take a look closer look to see if it needs stitches or just a band aid. We were told it will take a couple hours and they will call us when my baby is ready to be picked up. We left the pet hospital around 8:30pm, since we had another dog to take care of, we had to go home. Then I get a call from the hospital almost midnight to informed us that they have NOT even started on my baby yet and they would need to keep him overnight! @%#$! ×÷_*^ Then I get call from the vet around 6 am to let me know that they have to completely take my babys dew claw off. It was literally just barely hanging and they cant stitch it back on. @#@&%(* I can only imagine what pain my baby went through. The groomer literally almost cut the the dew clew off completely. And the funny thing is, when I dropped off my fur baby, I specifically told them that my baby has dew claws on all of his four paws and to BE CAREFUL! I guess they just didnt give a damn!!! Finally, was able to pick up our baby at 8am in the morning. Petco paid for all the cost but Now I have to deal w/my baby being traumatized. He has to wear a cone for 10 days. Give antibiotics for 5 days and pain medicine. It was my first time trying out Petco Grooming and DEFINITELY MY LAST! NEVER EVER BRING YOUR FUR BABIES TO ALAMEDA PETCO GROOMING! Unless you want to go through the same nightmare I went through. ************** If I could give them a negative 5 star, I would definitely would have. Came here to pick up some goldfish for my new aquaponics set up. We had to wait a good long while because there was only 1 person working the entire section. The entire time (around 6:00 PM) there was a pretty steady stream of customers (and their little children). She was super sweet though and provided great customer service. I thought she was great with the kids and took time to pick out the fish / shrimp the kids wanted. The fish I got at Mike's feeds cost 5X more if you want to pick out the ones you want! The comet goldfish are $.36 each for the larger size and $.20 for the smaller size. A decent variety of several different types of tropical fish. read more

Over the course of the next week we came to know that the kitten had serious anxiety, and that despite it's very friendly kennel-mate having a multitude of interested parties, assistant manager "Kayla' at Petco Alameda claimed Hopalong Rescue had mandated that both kittens be adopted together. Note: no such requirement was listed for either kitten on Hopalong's website. After reaching out to Hopalong offering reiki to the anxious cat to help increase it's and it's cage-mate's chance of adoption, Hopalong gave me permission to work with the cat at Petco Alameda to help alleviate it's anxiety levels. Despite the green light from Hopalong and being directed to Manager 'Flora' at Alameda Petco, assistant manager 'Kayla' at Petco Alameda insisted she was a Manager, and blocked any efforts to help out the anxious kitten. Of equal disappointment was when Flora called me back stating she too would not facilitate working with the anxious kitten. Both Kayla and Flora were disturbingly very apathetic about the state of the kittens. Shocked at both Kayla's & Flora's stance, and mortified that these kittens had been in the glass kennel for weeks now, I relayed my concerns, observations of the anxious-depressed kitten and experience at Petco Alameda to the head Manager, and he gave me the green light to work with the compromised kitten despite assistant manager Kayla continuing to try to block my efforts. Since then, both kittens have mysteriously been removed from the glass kennel where they were housed for 3+ weeks at Petco Alameda where staff are alleging the kittens have not been adopted but are unaware of where the kittens have gone. read more

This review is primarily for Pet-Co's puppy/dog training though we've had a good experience with all the salespeople, the store is stocked and clean and we really appreciate their policy of returning treats/items if they are a no-go with your pet. We've had a fantastic experience with the Puppy 1 and 2 training with Steph. She's knowledgeable, understands dog psychology, knows how to make positive training really effective and is just fun to be around. Our dog is tiny but I've seen her handle large dogs who feel frustrated or are acting out in smart, caring and productive ways that are replicable by the dog's guardians. Steph has a lot of great info to teach and keeps the space clean and limited to 3 dogs per group so you get lots of focused, personalized practice and ideas for training. We love Steph ALMOST as much as our pup does and highly recommend her for training. read more

I only come here for food for my dog... nothing else. I see why this store gets poor reviews. Customer service is severely lacking. Doesn't matter if you are there shopping to spend money, you are in THEIR way. I get why some employees don't wear name tags. They don't want to be called out on a review. All I have to go by is what my receipt says. I was definitely in Julie's way. I was trying to shop in what is considered the most valued real-estate of the store... by the front. Julie (grey hair cut in a bob working at 11am on Monday November 14) was so bothered by me and verbally expressed that I was "in her way". With all of the supply chain issues, at least they could compensate with great customer service. I really want to support businesses in Alameda ca especially. Not stellar. I think you could use them as an urgent care- definitely not as the pet's main Vet. Everyone was very pleasant and attentive with paperwork and processing payment. Exam was lacking, no counseling on prevention. Had to ask Vet to exam areas of concern. We had to wait for her to return to complete the "physical ", as she had moved on without letting us know the visit ended. But she was knowledgeable about allergy testing. Petco banks on convenience. I took my dog for his regular monthly bath and hair cut. I found out that Jax his regular groomer was no longer there, and so Mikaela took him in. This was the worst experience we've ever had there. She said to come back in 4 hours, which seemed quite a long time for a bath and haircut. When I got there he wasn't ready , she looked at me angry and it seemed that I was in her way. I sat outside to wait. I am a 90 year old Senior who had spent the night in ER , but managed to keep my doggies appt, the following morning. When I gave her a tip she just snatched it and turned away. Later I noticed that he did not get a haircut and his nails had not been buffed. I will not take my doggie there again , nor will I recommend Petco. read more

Horrible service in the fish department. Fish are quarantined and unavailable for sale half the time. Selling sick animals. We were surprised they had male cobra guppies here and bought 3. Noticed a suspect looking spot on one of their tails. A week later all 3 have died even after I sectioned the last one out to try and save him. All dead. These individuals are really doing a great job managing the place during Lockdown-2020 and I am so thankful that they were open (though, this wasn't due to any choice they made and they probably would have been safer and made more money at home on enhanced unemployment). Also, The manager/assistant manager with the sometimes colorful hair is soooooo ... professional and she has a very nice .... demeanor. I often catch her checking me out ... at the register. I will note that a lot of the pictures on yelp have nothing to do with this particular Petco and appear to be stock photos with professional models. There is considerable evidence to support his claim, including the fact that very few people in Alameda are quite that photogenic, and they definitely do not smile quite so much ... other than the aforementioned individual, who is probably always smiling on the inside (or under her mask). Some of the people who work there seem grumpy, but only one or two actually are. Finally, as I understand it, Petco, generally speaking, provides a lot more charitable support for animals than some other chains. read more

She guided us throughout the level 1 of puppy training and we already signed up for the next levels. Her training is based on positive reinforcement and I've learned a lot about body language, feeding techniques and lot more!!! I highly recommend to get trained by her. read more

Came in this morning wanting to add a fish to my sons tank. He was super excited and left disappointed since no one wanted to help us grab a fish. Asked an older lady for help and she simply pointed me to someone who was near the fish, cleaning up empty cages. She looked at us and said she was busy and to find someone else. Didn't realize empty cages were so important to clean when you have customers asking for a 3 minute packaging job. Super unprofessional. After tonight's fiasco I'll never take my dog to get groomed at Petco. My mom and I took my dog to get bathed and have his nails clipped. Something that he's done many times before at other Petcos. At about 4pm we checked our dog in and left for a half an hour . After not hearing back from them after a hour, we decided to see if Hooligan was done with his bath. When we walked in one lady was giving another worker a back message. The lady who I spoke to was texting on her phone. And one girl was sweeping up . Hello? No one could call me to tell me my dog was ready ? As soon as Hooligan came out of the doggy holding area he was hacking and hacking and hacking . My mom immediately asked " why is he coughing like that ?" One lady said " oh that's a reverse sneeze, that happens when dogs get too excited ". I and my mom weren't buying it . He seemed like he couldn't breath while he walked. Every step hacking away. We spoke to the manager who listened to him cough and suggested we take him to the vet . All expenses paid that is . She also refunded 37 dollars back into my account. Since when did bath and nail trim add up to 37dollars ?! Over where I live it's 17. We took Hooligan to the vet where it turned out to be a reversed sneeze and possible throat trauma. You only get throat trauma from having your neck tugged on too hard ! Also! All the workers except the manager was super super unprofessional. Screaming, being lazy and saying " I don't want to stay over time . I'm too tired " .Since Hooligans father is my boyfriend, they have his number on Hooligans file . I asked them to call me since my boyfriend was working . Even after they asked for my number . They still called him ! Like come on ! Finally when my mom went back into the store to ask what happened to Hooligan . The " groomer" with the blonde locks said " we told you what happened and you are accusing us of harming the dog ". All she wanted to know is " what happened !" read more

I don't understand how people can have the responsibility of a life and not have the integrity to hold up that responsibility. Be aware: If you have a "senior" dog with a pre-exisiting condition you won't be able to get your dog groomed here. BUT they will let you book and appointment and drive all the way out there before they tell you. This is the second bad experience I've had with PetCo grooming in less than a week. The first was on Friday 5/21 when I received a phone call from the PetCo in SF (Potero) that the groomer called in sick so they had to cancel my appointment. I get that stuff happens, but I got this call 1.5 hours before my appointment time and I booked that appointment weeks ago. There's really no one that can cover? But okay, no biggie - I managed to snag an appointment at this PetCo which is closer to my house anyway. So I arrive for my 2:30 appointment, but I need to wait 5 minutes before I'm seen because both groomers are with dogs. Okay. When I'm being checked in the groomer asks if my dog has any medical conditions. I say he has a collapsed trachea, so they should use a harness when grooming rather than a choke collar. Apparently, this has become an issue since the last time I got the same dog groomed at the same exact location. So she calls in her manager who quickly says, "It's not worth the risk" and denies me a grooming service. This is despite the fact that my dog has been groomed here before and has been groomed at multiple other locations with no issues. I asked if there was any policy on their website that explained this decision and she said no. I begged her to please take the dog because he has long black fur and desperately needs a trim before summer and PetCo already canceled on me last minute last week. Still says no and then proceeds to insinuate that I shouldn't be pushing for it because he's a "poor old guy" and "something could happen". My dog is an 8 year old pomeranian...he is far from being a "poor old guy" and again, he has been groomed multiple times before without issue. I even went so far to call PetCo's corporate line to ask if there was a policy about this that I could view. I was connected with someone who said that they'd look into it and to please hold - but after 17 minutes of holding, I got disconnected. Still wasn't able to find anything about it on the website, so it's more or less at the discretion of the grooming staff and store manager. So basically, you can make an appointment here, drive all the way there, get your dog in the door, and be turned away at the last minute. It's obvious to me that PetCo doesn't care about your time...or your dog even really? They care about protecting their own butts and not getting sued. Which I can understand on some level, but perhaps going to a local groomer will get you more of a human conversation rather than a corporate one. Edited to Add: They suggested a call VCA Animal Hospital and book a grooming appt there because of my dog's "condition". I said most vets aren't taking new pets at the moment because of covid. I just called them anyway to make sure - guess what?! They're not taking new pets right now because of covid...only current patients can book grooming appointments. Go figure. read more

Vanessa in the grooming department is great. She is thoughtful and made a real effort to get to know my dog, who is not the best at being groomed. Knowing that the person handling my dog is aware of his quirks and knows which sensitive spots to avoid is a huge relief.... Not to mention he always leaves looking happy and hansom. read more

Steph is by far the best dog trainer that Petco has. She recently moved from the Lakeshore store to South Shore, so we continued with taking our 10-year old dog for her 4th group training series. Steph can teach an old dog new tricks. It's too bad I can't say the same thing for the groomer we had. This review is only for Steph who also trains other trainers. read more

They say that they lotion their hairless guinea pigs daily which is very damaging to their skin and I was sold a guinea pig under the pretense he would be a cage mate for my other cavy, I returned him today and the staff said they knew he had issues being around other guinea pigs. I saw the employee that was suppose to clean my dog go in and out just hanging outside. I get you can have your smoke breaks but 3-4 times in an hour? I went inside to do a spot check, apparently they de-shed my dog, washed her and then cut her... My dog came out wet... Itchy. So i guess they wash and then cut your dogs hair???? I would expect a cut and then a wash... but what do i know? Ive only done it for my dog for over 8 years. Fur all over my car. I waited a couple days to see if i noticed a difference. My dog was still shedding, they botched her fur. I'm not coming here again. Hey people, unless you like lazy employees and want to pay for nothing, come here. You've been warned. read more

Store manager Kayla does not want to honor the price matching policy that's listed online for their retail stores. And there is no price match policy posted within the store. She could use some retraining in how to handle customer service better because I was quite unhappy. I only wanted to save $4, but she rather have me write this negative review. I doubt I'll ever visit this store again. The store is such a mess and stuff is literally found in random cardboard boxes. Very low selection of in-stock items in all departments and so many dead fish in their tanks that it's just a depressing example of animal crudity.
