Store manager Kayla does not want to honor the price matching policy that's listed online for their retail stores. And there is no price match policy posted within the store. She could use some retraining in how to handle customer service better because I was quite unhappy. I only wanted to save $4, but she rather have me write this negative review. I doubt I'll ever visit this store again. The store is such a mess and stuff is literally found in random cardboard boxes. Very low selection of in-stock items in all departments and so many dead fish in their tanks that it's just a depressing example of animal crudity. I came in today and asked the lady with the glasses for assistance in the fish area for some fish for my turtle so she requested for someone to come help and i waited 5mins for someone to come but no one showed up so i stand in a long line to get some help. Same lady was ringing up at the register and i had told her that no one came to help and she tells me that theres only two people working at the moment. Im pissed cause she had me waiting when she couldve told me that in the first place. I wasted 30 mins to get no help. Waste of my effin time. They should just shut this place down rather than fixing it. Worse customer service ever. And no manager on the floor. This place deserve zero stars. Be very careful scheduling or coming in contact with Vanessa I'm the grooming department! If she see's you and you don't look like a regular ( If you get the meaning), she immediately looks at the clock ( so she could cancel you), checks your dog for invisible matting( to charge you extra), or harass you about vaccinations that you received from Petco that are on file! I don't schedule with her EVER, but she is a customers worst roadblock ever! You need to have someone do a mystery shop on her, she's horrible! read more

Love our trainer at petco! Had a fearful and reactive pup who needed to some help. He is usually very afraid of people but was able to connect with trainer Steph! We started with a 4 pack of private lessons to make sure we had a good connection with Steph and have continued a few months now. The change in our pup is AMAZING! He is so much more comfortable and confident! Using the positive reinforcement training has been great! Our dog is like a completely different dog. Yes it took work! And yes we worked on training outside the hours of our weekly training time. Our dog is now able to walk past people with no reaction and past 80% of dogs without any reaction. Still a work in progress but now an enjoyable walk for both the dog and us! Can't say enough about how amazing Steph is and how much she has helped our dog. She took time to really understand what was causing the distress and how to appropriately address the issue with POSITIVE reinforcement. She is one of our dogs most favorite people. read more

My dog got tired of his kibble and so I went to Petco to find a new food for him. Luckily Scott walked by and asked me if I needed help. He was super helpful and gave me great advice and even gave me 10% off the dog food cause it was new. Once Scott told me he was a dog trainer (for 14 yrs) , I had about 1 million questions for him. Scott had a great attitude about answering all of my questions and even invited me over to the training room to give me more information about how I could help my dog. The new employees (store managers?) did not have any intention to help their customer at all! The 2 women Joceline, Jess worked in Petco, San Leandro, CA on the day when I was there for help. They claimed they both were the managers on the day. I tried to exchange/return after shopping in the store 30/31 day later (I think I was bought on 12/31/22 and revisited on 01/31/23). It was about a pet comb and a spray. I said I can keep the spray (at home I found out I had already had several) but I needed to exchange the comb as the newly bought comb bristles crooked the 1st time on my long hair cat. They even refused a store credit. During the time I was in the store, I didn't see any smile on their faces from the beginning to end. I just don't understand why they should have taken the positions if they aren't happy for the customer service. I decided to become a Petco customer on my 1st visit in the store on 12/31/22 because of the wonderful service of the previous store employees, and I requested to cancel my account/mailing list from Petco 30 days later because of these 2 employees. Today was my first time here and it was mixed. It seemed like every other aisle was 1/2 blocked with stuff either in a cart that workers had placed to re-stock items or stuff on the floor. Maybe they just got a shipment? I don't know, but it made cart navigation a big hassle. They say next year that they're removing all foods with certain artificial ingredients. But what they'll never remove are products with "animal" or "meal" in them, which is an even bigger concern. Sad that a lady today relied on the sales rep to "help" her as the resident-expert on choosing pet food. Poor luck that there was no opening for me to chime in. The sales reps also cannot speak against their store's inventory. So here's the low down: Do NOT buy any pet food with the words "meal" or "animal" in the ingredients. "Animal"/"Meal" means the meat ingredient cannot be identified. "Meal" is just the mashing up for garbage and spraying lard or animal fats to mask the foul combinations for your pets. "Animal" is a combination of all sorts of animals. This is the normal, standard composition of "animal": Also known as the 4-D: Dead, Diseased, Dying, Disabled. These are animals that are rejected-dead animals from slaughterhouses, euthanized animals, roadkill; rejected diseased/disabled animals from slaughterhouses; and of course, slaughterhouse animals that are dying and rejected. The "dead" also, mind you, includes roadkill and animals from other institutions, including pets. So those animals collected, will still have collars on. The "meal" category combined with "dead" will thus include expired meats from grocery stores, which include their styrofoam packaging, plastic wraps, etc. "Meal" ALSO includes the animal parts that are rejected such as beaks, tails, internal organs, that are not passable for human consumption, such as spleen, gallbladders, brains, etc. All of this goes into MEAL. This also includes vegetable ends such carrot ends, cores, corn husks, etc. Basically, all of these discards are swept from DIRTY FLOORS and SURFACES, collected, and added to "MEAL". All of this is melted down together, mashed into a "meal" and then sprayed animal lards/fats to make them tasty for pets. So Petco can stop selling pet food with artificial ingredients, but really... knowing what is in "animal" and "meal" makes a few artificial ingredients/chemicals meager in comparison. And I feel terribly sorry for anyone that goes to a pet shop to rely on these "people" as experts for their beloved animal friends. I buy HALO and WERUVA for my cat. read more

Brought my Golden Doodle there on December 1st for my appointment that I made 2 months before. I was told they didn't have enough time to do my dog and they booked it again in two weeks. On December 12th I brought my Golden Doodle in and they added several new charges that added up to $40 over the original quote. He needed grooming very badly so I agreed. They did a horrible job first cutting the coat down to his skin and cutting the top of his head more on one side than the other. Also messed up his face. It was a disaster. So they did not keep my original appointment, they charged more money than they quoted and then they did a horrible job. Never going back, will not take one step into that store again. This is at the Alameda store in South Shore. On top of everything else, the head groomer was very rude in raising the prices. Beware, go somewhere else if you love your pet. read more

Betta fish are bulleproof, right? No. They are not, and despite my best intentions, my Betta (Dr. Gillman), was not loving life. Not wishing to disturb him, I took samples of his water and samples of the new tank I had just changed and hightailed it to Petco with my boyfriend at 7:30 on a Monday ( who says romance is dead?) Arturo saved the day. He kindly and informatively did some troubleshooting, all the while testing the water samples he'd been provided. I usually avoid box stores because they tend to be a little on the impersonal side, and I really needed help. Arturo didn't make me feel like an idiot for my fishes ailment, and he offered sympathy when we told him how distressed we were. He gave us multiple options of how to proceed, and then ran around the store to find us the products while we stood at the register. Arturo is an absolute treasure. Sometimes, when it's a clear night, I look up at the stars and think of him and the immense impact he has had. read more

All I go there for is fish stuff. They have some good deals if you wait for their sales. Once a year they have a $1 per gallon tank sale and quite often a 5 for $5 freshwater fish sale(smaller fish like neon tetras). That's good if you want to fill a tank with small schooling fish. They have a small but healthy section of Saltwater fish. They'll test your water Salt and Fresh. And they have a fish guarantee (that doesn't apply to marine fish) They have an oddball group of employees that do seem to try their best. I like the effort and it's in my neighborhood. read more

Earlier this afternoon my husband and I stopped by Petco to see if they carry a certain brand of dog food - Hill's Ideal Balance. The other day while I was walking on Market Street (SF) two representatives from HIB were handing out free samples of their dog food and a $5.00 coupon. Our dog gobbled up the new dog food. Petco had the products, which they just received recently. The price of a 15 pound bag was going for $31.99 (regular price) and two bags would have cost us $63.98, excluding tax; with tax it would have been $69.74. However, a 30 pound bag of the same brand, different flavor, was selling for $47.98. What was totally cool was the manager (Chris) did an override and charged us $47.98. Since we're PETCO members, we got another discount along with the $5.00 coupon. I'm not complaining when hubby and I paid a total of only $40.90 and headed out the door...wow, that's a $28.84 savings! I guess I can't go wrong by that...LOL. read more

I love shopping here. Service is always prompt and shelves are well-stocked. Also, I took my dog to get groomed here for the first time and they did a very good job. The customer service is a bit bland, but I always hold supervisors responsible for that. Enthusiasm and positivity seem to be lacking, but, again, I wonder why the pet stylists seem unmotivated. Even when I called to make an appointment, I was super rushed just by the tone of voice and the very fast speech of the pet groomer. Management should look into making their workers happier. I came in today with my 2 boys in hopes of buying $5 worth of feeder fishes as a fun pet project for my boys. AJ came along and helped educate and me on how to best care for the fish. Although I am disappointed I was convinced out of 25 feeder fishes for $5...lol... I am even more happier in knowing that AJ is a huge advocate for the pets at the store. He helped educate me about how to best care for feeder fishes and redirected me to buying 2 beta fishes instead. I love how he put the best interest of the pet and customers first over profits, which in turn... instead of me buying $5 worth of fishes... I ended up buying 2 beta fishes for $17. I love seeing AJ's passion for the greater good and I hope that upper management/corporate headquarters will give AJ the awesome recognition he deserves. I hope that he will be able to train all his staff to think the same way for the betterment of the greater good over profits. This gives me piece of mind knowing that the pets at Petco in Alameda are well taken care of and happy. I love this place even more so because of AJ's kindness, compassion and caring for both the pets, customers and all living creatures. If only all human kind were like this!! We have been loyal customers of this Petco store for 17 years. Last week, sadly, our last remaining cat passed away (we had 2 beautiful boys). We were left with an unopened bag of Purina Pro Plan which I decided to return to the store. The manager, Marge, said that we could have a store credit to which I explained that we have no cats left to use it for. Didn't matter. After 17 years of purchases at this store, she said I needed a receipt, which we got rid of the day after the purchase, we had the cat food. I asked her to look up my order history. She said, they don't do that. After 17 years of being a customer, and having an unopened bag of Purina Pro Plan in hand, you would hope for a little loyalty on their part. No such luck! Keep having trouble with the repeat delivery. I keep getting extra deliveries when i have delayed them so finally went in to return my last order. i told the clerk that i was having trouble but online is the only place i can get the fish food. The clerk, an older White lady, blonde, no makeup, then said that she can show me where it is in the store. I told her that you don't carry it. Said i looked and you don't have it, and she said "well apparently you don't know where to look." I took a breath and said just return my order and handed her the unopened box and said I delayed the order but keep getting it. She then told me to logon to my account and when I asked why she said "so i can see what you're doing wrong." Again, just return my order and she responded she couldn't do it at that register and i had to go to another one. Thank goodness it was Phineas, the only professional person in the store. He made the return, confirmed they don't carry it in the store. I had to get something else so went to shop. Yep, I got "her" again. Then she said, remembering me, that I probably have two accounts and don't know it! said I would know it because i have to login and I would see it. Then said "i need to logon in so she can look at it herself!" Then made other condescending remarks. When I asked her if she knew how insulting she was, she just shrugged her shoulders. Well after being insulted, way too many times, there was more but this is long enough, I came home and called. All you could do was Chat and I got a Marly R. She told me the complaint had to be online and it would be forwarded so I started typing. Then 2 minutes later, she asked if I wanted to continue the conversation, Told her I was entering it. Four times she asked if i wanted to continue and kept sending me the same info to submit. Asked her to let me finish and she asked if there was anything else she could help me with and disconnected. Long complaint, all true, and canceled my account. With stores needing their long time customers to return and stay, apparently they don't care about the people they hire. Caution: they will sell you sick animals. I purchased a Guinea pig from here less than a month ago. Today, I had to rush him to the vet ER and he died shortly after. Turns out he had a large cancerous mass in his stomach that the vet said had been there since I got him. Looks like petco does not do any health checks on their animals. What's worse, when I called about getting a refund and to let them know what happened the lady who picked up was abrupt, irritated to answer any questions, and extremely rude. I've been having my fur baby groomed here for a few years now. It's been hard to get an appointment during Covid so we had to wait a little over a month to get her in. When we arrived it was the usual questions one being "is she spayed"? About an hour into the grooming I get a phone call asking is she in heat because she's bleeding on the table and if she keeps bleeding she will have to go home - huh? She said her blood squirted out on me and it's no fun having blood squirt out on you and I've cleaned her up but if she keeps bleeding she will come home as is. Im listening trying to take all this in so I make a u-turn and go back to be closer in case I have to pick her up sooner than the time she first gave. She also stated she was shocked to see so much blood from a dog in heat and im thinking what's really going on. I get my dog and I see the drip but no leaks. This still didn't sit right with me because when I dropped her off she asked me was she been spayed so why ask again - the why was because during the sanitary cut she gave my dog she nicked her with the clippers which caused her to bleed like that and looking at her the next day you can see it - it's scabbing up. I know things happen dogs move and get antsy but to make it seem like my dog is bleeding out and if she doesn't stop she will have to leave and come home "as is" instead of being honest was totally un-professional and dishonest. I wasn't that impressed with how she trimmed her face after showing her a picture but she had a lot to deal with having to cut months worth of hair away but the bleeding part is a bit much. I'm a bit skeptical now feeling is that how the other groomers are too not willing to say they made a mistake? My favorite groomer came and left this location twice so I'm keeping that in mind now as well. My groomer's name was Vanessa R. She may be good just not with my dog.. Our 90-pound American Bully was putting a lot stress on my family due to his behavior problems. His nipping and jumping were becoming unbearable and aversive techniques taught by most YouTube channels only made his behavior worse. Stephanie also taught me the 'why' behind my dog's jumping and nipping which really opened my eyes to my own actions and how I was unknowingly encouraging the bad behavior. Working with Stephanie has been enjoyable and she always has a clear, logical, and easy-to-follow solution when I bring up a new behavior problem. While my dog is still a work-in-progress, I am now able to communicate with him and can turn to the multiple reward based strategies that Stephanie taught me whenever an issue arises. Reward-based training did take a little bit of practice but the trust and bond that it built between me and my dog made it worth every cent! read more
