Have you ever seen the movie Cats Vs. Dogs where the cats are trying to take over the world and the dogs are trying to stop it? This store is nothing like that because they don't have any cats and dogs actually in the store. BUT they have a nice selection of fish, lizards, and other slimy animals of all flavors. I actually got my beta fish Claude there and he is an independent fish who don't need no alpha. However, I noticed their parakeets and finches must be on a silent strike or something against the store because they refused to talk to me. The people there were very friendly and knowledgeable. When I asked them which dog food was made from horses they knew exactly which brands the main one being a Taco Bell brand. Highly recommend this store for all beta fish owners and lovers. read more

It's hard to put into words the amount of heartbreak, disrespect and lack of compassion this Petco showed Yelper Ben Y. and I when we purchased our baby guinea pig, Hatch, from this store, and then returned to tell them he had passed away because of their own lack of knowledge and care. When we purchased Hatch, we immediately fell in love. He was tiny, soft and munching on grass - we knew we had to have him. It took us nearly ten minutes to find an employee to help us get him out of his cage, and when we finally found someone, he basically handed him off to us and walked away. We took Hatch home and loved him endlessly. He brought us so much joy and gave us love too. He was calm, sweet and loving. After a few days, we noticed that he was sneezing too much, had mucus on his nose, wasn't eating and was lethargic. We immediately took him to the vet and she told us he was only four weeks old, undernourished and sub-thermal. She said the Petco took him from his mother WEEKS too early, and that he needed her nutrients and warmth but didn't have them. She sent us home with medicines and said he might pass away even with care and antibiotics for the upper respiratory infection he had. We spent the night trying to hydrate and force feed him, but despite our efforts he passed away. It was heartbreaking, and we won't be the same because of it. We went back to the Petco to let them know what happened. This is what occurred: "The baby guinea pig we bought from you guys a week ago passed away. He was undernourished and very sick, and we wanted to let you know," we said. No response. We asked for a refund, not that it's possible to refund heartbreak. "Do you have the body?" she asked. Appalled, we said we didn't have the body because we buried him. "Can you exhume the body?" We didn't know what to say. This blank-faced, disrespectful and zero-compassionate woman just asked us to dig up our dead baby guinea pig. She never said anything along the lines of, "I'm sorry to hear this," or anything of the sort. We were absolutely appalled. We turned around and left the store. After we got in the car we realized we should have asked for the manager, but we were too shocked and disgusted to go back inside. I have never been treated with such disgusting behavior in my entire life. This Petco doesn't even deserve 1-star. They have no regard for the animals they sell or the people that come in with broken hearts because their beloved pet passed away. I am going to report this incident to the corporate headquarters because something needs to be done. I would never wish this treatment on anyone and am so appalled, disgusted and furious with how we were treated, and how our little baby Hatch was treated while he was still living there. We are never going to return to this Petco, or maybe any other Petco because of how we were treated. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

It is simply unfathomable how awful the employees of this Petco are. Fellow Yelper Laura P. and I purchased a baby Guinea pig from here who died only days later due to their lack of care. Petco took the baby too soon from his mother to sell. When we returned to tell the employees our baby had passed due to their negligence, we were met with absolutely no compassion whatsoever. Laura's review has the dialogue, but what I will say is the employees at this Petco are sub-human. There is an issue when the animals a store sells are more human than the people who work there. The cashier who we talked to was dead behind the eyes. Why would a pet store hire people who lack fundamental empathy? Who lack any care for animals or people? This woman, and the man who initially showed us the guinea pigs, were absolute zombies. They are the type of people who walk across busy intersections because they have no regard for life. Our guinea pig baby died because of these plain bagels. We had just suffered a horrible loss and didn't go back until a few days later to talk to them about the death. The cashier (who works Monday nights) asked us, with no sympathy or emotion, to exhume the body. The manager, who was no where to be seen, didn't even have the decency to come out to see us when the cashier called her. We were appalled and stormed out of the store, but when driving back we regretted not raising more hell. Now, we've gotten in touch with Petco (the company) who are investigating this incident and store. I hope these employees are fired and suffer for their indecency. read more

Came here to get some supplies for my fish tank. I was there for a good 20 minutes and none off the people working there ever asked me if I needed any assistance. They weren't busy at the time either. When I was finally ready to checkout, I had to wait 5 minutes for someone to come to the register. This is one of the worst Petco stores I've been to. I prefer the one in Rockville a lot better. I only come here because it's on the way home from work. read more

Such great staff and kids friendly. We got a ferret and had to come back a few times to get items for it. Since we never had a ferret before we bought a lot of the wrong things and when it didn't work out or we were lost without knowing what yo do we came back 4 times and had such great support, advise and customer service that made us feel very comfortable to come back. This place seems understaffed. Also it's kinda dirty. The doors are a bit loud when they open and close. We saw two tanks where a fish was eating a dead fish, which is a sign that they aren't feeding them enough food. Also the cat there looked very depressed, he wouldn't even look at us when trying to get his attention. Also the bird cages were filled with poop. Not much care to these animals. Not much variety either. There were some cool fishes but petsmart has them cheaper. read more

I don't know what Petco store those shiny profile pictures were taken at, but it certainly wasn't the store in Beltsville! This Petco is old and definitely not shiny. However, they're good enough for what we need. Our cats are hooked on Petco's unscented bulk litter, so we go every few weeks to fill our buckets. They've got a decent selection of cat food, too. I've always found the staff to be very friendly and they have occasional adoption events and vaccination clinics. Those can be chaotic with the layout of the store. My favorite part of the store is the cat adoption area, which features cats from the College Park Animal Shelter. They're very careful about prospective adopters, so the kitties hang around longer than at PetSmart. But you know they're going to a good home. read more

I went to buy food for my hedgehogs there a few days ago, and while I was buying food I saw this adorable teddy bear hamster for sale. As I was looking at it, the people working at the store said he was a terrible animal, a biter, and incredibly mean. First off, thats terrible sales technique. Second, after they to me this, they were tormenting the poor thing by poking him and prying at him. He was biting and shaking and I felt so sorry for him. All the workers said he'd been there for months, so I can only imagine how long they were tormenting him. It was awful, we have rescued this little guy. And he is absolutely fine. Let me begin by saying something nice -- that's what you're supposed to do right? The employees here, for the most part, are good-natured people. I appreciate their friendliness and interest in my dog. Braham (sp?), one of the managers of the store, was extremely helpful on my first visit when I was buying the necessities for my new puppy. And that's where the good news ends. The management, at least in terms of "puppy playtime" is garbage, as is the trainer who leads it. The trainer lost my original copies of my puppy's birth and vaccination history last week when I brought them in, and had the audacity to say "Well, I know I gave them to a human..." ??? So you apparently gave my records to someone else.... and you seem to think that makes it ok. Strike one. Strike two: I walk into this petco yesterday for puppy playtime (because even though I'm not a fan, my dog made a puppy friend there, and I was going back for him) -- but wait! There's no puppy playtime. The staff had no idea that puppy playtime even happens on Saturdays, and when they referred me to their posted calendar, they saw that there IS supposed to be a puppy playtime on Saturdays at 1pm. They said the trainer doesn't even work on Saturdays... just Sundays. "See how tomorrow it says 'with Ashton,' that means she's coming in." Okay... so don't trust the website or the printed calendar you post all over the store. Got it. Strike 3, 4, 5, and 6: I come back today, Sunday, for their puppy playtime so my dog can finally play with some other puppies this weekend. Is it happening? No. Interesting, why not??? It took ten minutes for the employee to find out and she didn't even come back to update me! I was just standing there for ten minutes. Braham, the manager, walks by and asked me if everything's going okay.... ummm no. Did your employee not mention anything? So once I asked if puppy playtime is happening, he said no, unfortunately the trainer is sick. She called "last minute" to cancel. Last minute, meaning "yesterday 30 minutes before her shift." Meanwhile nobody knew she was sick yesterday when I was there 15 minutes before her shift... they didn't even know she worked on Saturdays. That's not adding up. "She's sick so she can't come in because of the dogs." Dude, that's not even a thing. Dogs do not catch colds from humans. "Oh I mean because of the people." Right. In sum, I am fed up with this petco. There is a serious lack of communication and a plethora of poor excuses to try to make up for it. I would never sign my puppy up for classes here -- they lose your paperwork and do nothing to salvage the situation. It's insane how disorganized this place is. If you can't train your staff to know when you host events, and if you can't be reliable to show up for your shift, and if you can't keep track of FOUR PIECES OF PAPER, you can't be trusted to teach my dog jack shit. I think my four month old puppy could run this event/store better. read more

Some of the staff members are not very friendly with the customers; I recently went there to purchase an angel fish and this one staff member began questioning me about what tank I would house it in, the food I'd provide it, and if I even had any experience. For the gentleman who questioned me in the fish isle, I've been raising angel fish and betas since I was five and I am an animal science major at the University of Maryland. It's very rude and unprofessional to interrogate customers when some of them have more pet experience than the staff members do. They need staff members who are not only willing to work around inexperienced pet owners but also have some pet care experience before applying to this kind of field. read more

I have Keeshonden which are double coated, Dutch Barge dogs. One of them requires special baths every other week but she can not make her way up to our bathroom because of mobility issues and multiple flights of stairs. We go to the Petco Unleashed! on Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring because they have a low tub that I can help her get in. The employees never give us a look like they are going to have to do a lot of clean-up nor do they begrudge us the time for me to properly bathe her and then dry her with the blower. My girl actually looks forward to going there which says everything to me. read more

The customer service is freaking ridiculous @ this location. I, placed an order online for store pick check the status it was ready to be picked up. Went into the store literally like 10mins ago. There's no one @ the register so I started walking down to see if I can find some help. I, see one young lady help a couple. And, she turns and sees me then a young man came out of no where. They, converse with each other mind you I'm still standing in the line @ this point. She comes over and starts talking to some damn birds that the couple I guess was purchasing. If yelp allows you to give zero star, I would! This store is a nightmare. Came in to purchase a fish for our tank and had to wait over an hour before we were even helped. Once we were finally acknowledged, we were told that we could not purchase the fish because we couldn't produce a photo of our fish tank. Then to top it off we were in line with a really nice couple who brought in a pet they had rescued and the manager had them to put there name on a list stating if they returned pets two more time they would no longer be able to purchase a pet from the store again. Have to say customer service in my experience has improved a whole lot; employees seem to really go the extra mile when you ask questions, if they can't answer you, they'll find someone who can. Courteous and friendly. A big improvement over just a few years back! I also appreciate the fact that they seem to keep more small animal supplies in stock than Petsmart down the road. read more
