If I could give a negative star I would. Horrendous. Appalling. If you have a pet who needs a mobile groomer, look elsewhere. Their's quit. Except, they didn't bother to call and tell me that and so I waited for the groomer to show up (for two days. she never did.) and was given all sorts of different stories each time I called to see what was going on. The first time I called the shop it was because the groomer was a bit late. The lady at the shop assures me the groomer will be there soon. Ok, no biggie. Two hours go by. Still no groomer. I'm an easy going gal but this is getting ridiculous. I call again. This time I'm told they have NO RECORD of my reservation. No name, address, dog info. Nothing. Um....what? I had literally JUST spoken with the same woman ABOUT my reservation. She had my info right in front of her. (Sh*t is about to get weirder folks)... The woman is incredibly rude and unapologetic. She literally says to me, "I don't know what to tell you. There's nothing we can do for you.". What?! Then she suggests I take a cab, with my two 100lb golden retrievers, to their shop for a groom. She offered to pay for the cab. I explain the reasons why my dogs need a groomer to come to the house. Mainly, I remind her that she JUST CONFIRMED my appointment in our prior call. She says she'll check with the mobile groomer and get back to me. Another hour goes by. No call from the shop. No groomer. I'm pissed. I call them again. They say they haven't heard from the groomer. They'll call her again and call me back. Guess what? Another hours goes by. No call, no groomer. I call them. They're CLOSED. I'm left with their voicemail system. Seriously? I leave a nice but to-the-point message saying that I'm still waiting for their groomer. I request a call from the manager. By noon the next day, I still have not heard from these people. And still no groomer. I call again and ask to speak with the manager. The same woman I spoke with yesterday gives a long sigh (still no apology) and explains that there's no way they can accommodate me at all because..... the groomer quit. Oooook? What?? At this point I begin to suspect that the mobile groomer quit long ago but they never attempted to tell me in the hope that I would just bring my dogs in to the shop. I again explain the reasons why I use mobile grooming in the first place and that I really don't want to give them my business but that I'm stuck with a Yelp deal. I plead with her to speak with her manager. She later emails me later requesting my mailing address so she can refund me by check (thank God). Guess what? 14 days later, three emails from me, and no check. No return email. No call. I'll be sure to update this review if I get anything from them but don't hold your breath. UPDATE: To give credit where credit is due, I received contact from two different owners or managers by email within hours of this review. They both apologized profusely and explained the mobile groomer quit without notice but that they should have handled the situation in a better and more timely fashion. They also assured me a refund would arrive soon and offered a discount if I return for services. I definitely appreciate the damage control. read more

What kind of person buys a box of peanut butter bonbons and a "Dog Perignonn" chew toy for their dog, when a dog would be equally happy with an old sock filled with pork chop bones? They were great. I had Christine come and walk my dog my dog while I was on vacation and my dog was staying with my father. I wanted my dog to get two long walks a day which I thought might be too much for my dad. This worked out amazingly well. Christine was terrific, my dog liked her and the journals were a great comfort that I could keep up with my dogs care while out of town. Additionally, Diane, who seems to manage everything, is terrific. She is very easy to talk to, very responsive (and quickly too) and very patient with repetitive questions. Knowing that I could reach out to her anytime and I would get a detailed response quickly was such a comfort since this my first time using a dog walker. I did a lot of research before hiring them. Some people just like dogs and feel that they are qualified. Some places, the dog walks walk dogs if they feel like it! My vet recommended a former employee, I called her and mentioned in my message I was referred by the vet. She never called me back. So finding Barkley Square (I was referred by a coworker whose wife owns another pet company but my father lives too far west for to be able to help me) was terrific. I used the mobile grooming service to have my very fluffy, but matted kitten. Since they were here I had them bathe the dogs and clip their nails. The kitten was gone for over an hour and I was so worried we were going to get a shaved down kitty back. Instead, we got a happy, cleaned up, very happy, and still fluffy cat. We always ask that they not put the spray/cologne stuff on the dogs and most groomers do it anyway. They didn't and that is a huge plus for us. I came here based on the yelp reviews and the fact that there was a dog park we wanted to check out nearby. They have a cute outdoor area with tables and they leave out a bowl of treats and water for your four legged friend. The inside is small but full of treats with different flavors, consistencies and sizes. We bought several things like lamb ears, peanut butter cookies, bully sticks a toy called hide-a-bird and DOG BEER (oh yes!..unfortunately it's non-alcoholic but it is full of glucosamine). They also have a plate of cookies that broke that they sell for a discounted price. Everything is baked inside (beer excluded) so you when you ask, you know for sure the contents of what you're giving your dog. I also bought some catnip toys for my cats and I could definitely smell the aromatic herb through the toy (which I normally can't with the petco versions). The staff was very helpful and the experience was relatively whimsical. I only take away one star because they didn't have any cat treats (though she said they make cat cakes) but the baker Kat says that they are working on it once they can find something that most cats would actually eat they will make it available (on a side note, if you have cats that will eat most everything, the treats in the store are infact safe for them to consume). Besides the fact that it is one of the cutest boutique pet stores around it also has some of the best gourmet pet treats around. So if you aren't into dressing your puppy , carrying them around in designer handbags or showering them with expensive accessories check out the bakery. They have everything from pretzels to peanut butter cups to yummy cookies shaped like your favorite mailman. If you are into clothes and accessories for your little one- you might be a little shell shocked at the price. T-shirts, jackets harnesses and leashes are priced around $30. Ordered $29 groupon for dog grooming and thought wow this is cool and really close to me! I can totally make this happen. Phoned in and was told they were flooded with groupon reservations and couldn't be seen till after the new year (ordered 12/12), I said Ok, we'll wait it out and see you then. So here we are...Jan 9th. I have my day planned...Drop Reese off, take care of car issues, gym and then lunch. I get a phone call from Anna asking if I can bring Reese in a little earlier. Perfect! I can start my day earlier. I rush out of bed, get dressed, prep Reese and we are in the cold car with hot coffee, ready to get the day going. We head over to the Alexandria location and Reese is excited. She's the only one there. There is only person who is confused why I am at this location and not the one in Falls Church. This location does not groom, they have the mobile groomers. Sorry that your groupon shows this address... Are...You...Freaking...Kidding..Me? They said they have been 'trying' effortlessly to get Groupon to change the address, meanwhile I am there with NO COMMUNICATION from Barkley Square Pets about the address mix up and asked if I'd like to reschedule. Very grateful for the service provided by Karing by Kristina and my cat's pet sitter, Karen, after an emergency situation involving my diabetic cat was brought to their attention. I'd mistakenly given the wrong dates of when I was going to be out of town, and realized this after I'd been out of town for 2 1/2 days. My cat needs insulin injections and had never gone more than a day without them. I realized this late in the evening and this could have had serious consequences. But KBK responded to my after hours message very quickly, where I explained the situation the importance of having someone come out as soon as they could, as I did not know how my cat would tolerate/react to going without insulin that long. Kristina informed me she had left messages to my usual pet sitter (Karen), and the KBK scheduler. And even offered to go he self if the pet sitter couldn't make it by the next morning. The next morning, I breathed a big sigh of relief when the cat sitter/Karen called my cell and let me know that my cat was fine, she was with him at that minute, and everything seemed OK. This review is two stars because I had an appointment for a groom and shampoo that I purchased at Groupon. It is a clean friendly shop. My dog was treated well and I requested a hand strip for my wirehaired dachshund. The groom was perfect but I was charged 120 more than the groupon. Since I had not asked the price before the service I paid and gave a tip. The groom cost 171 total. That was excessive. I was contacted by the owner and she offered to make it good. I went back to the shop but the groomer did not know how to hand strip. I have such mixed feelings on this shop. I decided to stop using Barkley Square after several negative encounters with one of their pet sitters. Our sitter was not arriving at or near the expected times, we didn't receive the correct number of updates, and we came home once to find litter all over the house. I've emailed and called the company multiple times to ask for my key to be returned. They have never responded to any of my messages, yet I continue to receive spam emails from them. I've taken my Samoyed to Kristina for almost the entire 5-1/2 years I've had him. He is very fluffy with long hair, so washing, brushing, and drying is a big chore...which is why I stopped doing it shortly after he grew up. Jack (the dog) absolutely loves going to Barkley. When he recognizes what street I've turned down, he plants his legs and drags me to their door. Given how long his sessions are, this fact alone says wonders about everyone there. Jack treats bath time, brush time, nail time as play time, which can be problematic with an energetic 65+-lb. bundle of energy. He comes out happy and looking absolutely fantastic! I recommend Kristina and her staff without reservations. They're great with the dogs, do fantastic work, and are fun to talk with as you drop off and pick up. read more

I have two terrier mixes who are, for all intents and purposes, my "kids." On most days, either my boyfriend or I can make the trip home at lunch to take them for a walk, before heading back to the office, with Fridays being the exception. On Fridays, we hired Barkley Square Pets to walk our dogs midday. Since then, it has been a disaster. . Last week, I was overcharged $200 when they took payment for the walks that I had had up to that point. And while this was quickly remedied, I did not get a confirmation call back that the refund had been processed. I left a voicemail later that day asking for confirmation that the refund had been processed, and again, I received no call. I broke down and called back the following morning, and was told that the refund had been processed. Is it so hard to pick up the phone and confirm this with someone who you just overcharged by $200?! I was floored at this point, but decided to keep going with the company because we have a great walker. Our walker was GREAT with our pets. Even when one of our dogs was a little reluctant to go on walks, he was patient and kind. Unfortunately, when I got home from work today, I noticed no note stating that he had been here. I also noticed that one of my dogs had had accidents on the floor. I instantly grabbed their leashes and took them outside, and sent a text message to our walker, asking if he had been by today. I got a message back stating, "I missed their walk today. It was on my calendar, so no excuse. So sorry." So sorry? Our dogs were alone in the house for 9+ hours today, were forced to defecate/urinate inside the house, and did not get any lunch. And you're "SO SORRY?" I confirmed with the office manager today, while I was closing my account with them, that we WERE on his schedule for today. He just didn't show up. For me to come home and find that they have been inside ALL day by themselves, with no food, walks, etc., was just unbelievable. I'm appalled. We TRUSTED this company with the well-being of our pets and this is what comes of it. I hope my experience is one of the few. No one should have to come home to that, especially when you pay good money to a company for peace of mind that your pets are well cared for. read more

The person who cared for our cat was nice- but when I came to get my keys three weeks after we had used the service they didn't have them. they told me they would be back the next day and when I came back a week later they said they couldnt find them. When I moved from Alexandria to Vienna I was totally devastated at the thought that I would have to find a new dogwalker. Not true! So thrilled that Javy can still walk my dogs when I'm out of town. It's very hard for me to leave my animals in someone else's care, but with Javy I am confident they're well cared for. He leaves great, detailed notes about what they do with him on his visits, and they really like seeing him. He even emails me photos of them during their walks. I have been taking our Shiba Inu to these wonderful folks since we adopted him last summer. Being a rescue from a neglectful previous owner, my Shiba is nervous around new people and places. Before his first grooming session Brian took the time to soothe my dog's nerves and calm him down. I paid for s full service groom and was happy I did. Nails neatly trimmed, ears and teeth cleaned and a nice bath without the excess of perfume that many groomers use. In fact, I am so happy with Barkley square that when we inherited a second Shiba from our daughter I bring him in as well! read more

Our sitter from KBK has taken immaculate care of our pets and seems to genuinely love taking care of animals - which is definitely the most important thing. We have had some problems with logistics and communication at the office - keys, billing, scheduling etc. but we eventually got things worked out. Very unprofessional and the manager says one thing while the accountant ( Kristina's husband) says another. They do not uphold their end of the contract. Their VIP service is a waste of money, you don't really get a discount and there are only 5 walks you can miss. Then if you add them on to the end, like they do, and you miss one of those walks then they won't credit you. I would highly recommend a different company that actually cares about your pet and treats you fair. read more

She was great and watched my cat while I was away, and even wrote a little journal about my cat's activities while I was gone. I have a 2-year-old golden retriever and I've had nothing nothing but good experiences with Barkley Square. My golden unfortunately got hot spots after a bug bite and had to be shaved partially on his back by the vet. It's been a month and his hair is finally growing, but he desperately needed to be groomed. The groomers (Liz and Brian) at Barkley Square were great. They really cleaned up my golden by giving him a great bath, trimming him all over and really brushing him out. My baby looks 100% better. They certainly earned their tip. read more

I had a mobile grooming appointment scheduled for 9/16/15. That morning they called to cancel, as their van broke down. They scheduled me for the following week at the same time on the same day of the week, and offered me 20% off for the inconvenience. I thought, great! My rescheduled appointment was today. They never came, and this time they didn't call. I've called numerous times and left a couple voicemails and no one has called me back. This was my first time with Barkley Square, and due to two cancellations wasn't even able to get my dog groomed. I'm pretty disappointed. Two stars since they offered me 20% off for the first missed appointment, but really should be one since the service was never delivered. read more

Karing By Kristina is EXTREMELY IRRESPONSIBLE AND NEGLECTFUL - please do not use this company if you care about your pets. I contracted with KBK to walk my two dogs twice per day, five days per week at a rate of $665 per week. On two different occasions, the dog walker failed to show up for one of the regularly scheduled walks with no notice or communication. I returned home to find out that my dogs had either had accidents or were desperate to go outside. I contacted the Karing By Kristina Office Manager by phone both days to make her aware of the issue. In addition, one afternoon I returned home while the dog walker was out with my dogs and discovered that she had left my front door unlocked and open. After speaking with my neighbors, I learned that this was the dog walker's regular habit. As a result, my home and valuables were completely unsecured twice a day for a period of more than six months. At first the Office Manager handled these complaints appropriately by providing us with a new dog walker. As the issues continued, the Office Manager basically just gave up and acted like I was a problem and difficult to deal with. For $665 a month, and for a company that claims to care about the animals they work with, this was beyond unacceptable. Although the replacement dog walker was very good with my dogs, the issues persisted whenever he was out of town or unavailable. I terminated my contract with Karing By Kristina and asked the Office Manager if I could pick up my house keys. I was told that the dog walker would leave them in my house, which did not happen. I called the Office FIVE more times over the course of almost 3 weeks and still my keys were not returned. In addition, I received an email invoice indicating that I would be charged for the next month's service despite the fact that I cancelled the contract. I ultimately had to hunt down the phone number for the owner of the company and submit a complaint to the Better Business Bureau to have my keys returned and the invoice cancelled. Althouh the owner was very aplologetic, there is no excuse for the level of neglect and irresponsibility we experienced. read more

We have long been fans of Barkley Square products for our dog. Before taking a dog cruise, we spotted a small, new outpost of the Barkley Square Alexandria empire. Since our dog was being good, I took her in and bought her some treats which she promptly devoured. The service was very friendly and chatty, same as at the main Barkley Square location. While small, it has everything your dog will want while walking around the pier. Supposedly they make their treats out of ingredients that are all good for digestion for dogs. read more

I used Barkley Square as a part of a weekend event that our local dog gym, Zoom Room Rockville held. We purchased a pawdicure/bath/nail trim/tooth cleaning package from Barkley for a very reasonable price. The ladies in the grooming van were very friendly and finished with our dog Nugget within 30 minutes. They gave us some tips on products to brush Nugget's teeth and also demonstrated ways we can cut his nails at home. Great customer service and a happy puppy- I am satisfied with their work and will use again. read more

Not only was the business closed, we also called the telephone number and left a voice mail message and no one ever returned our call. This is the best pet sitting service I have ever used. They are extremely personable and always leave me with the feeling that my two dogs are in the best of hands. I use the in-home visits that they provide. They keep me up to date with the journals that they email me after each visit. It is funny that this place will not give more than 2 small treat to the dog throughout the grooming time. I went early to pick my dog and I saw through the window as how the groomer was handling my pet and it was awful. She was very rude to a poor scared pet. She did not even do a good job in the end.
