I was in there today to purchase some Dubai roaches. The containers on the shelf, six of them, different sizes had nothing but dead ones in them. They never even give them any water. I told the girl and she, oh, this one has one live in it. Meal worms in cooler were also mostly all dead and the containers were all dark matter. No dates on them. The had one Jumping Spider in it that looked to be an i3. Just a tiny one. It needed to be fed because you gauge by the look of their little butts. Very skinny. I felt so sorry for it. But, if you buy these animals from them, they think there is a market for them and just get more that the don't take care of. Please only buy from breeder. Do not support these pet stores. read more

I also told the cashier twice that I didn't have the same phone number and she was showing great frustration because I had cash. Terrible grooming experiences here (2). We brought our two dogs in for grooming yesterday as the groomer we usually use had surgery, and cannot stand right now. We wanted to give Petco another try after a mishap with weight issues, and our vet confirmed our dog weighs 23 lbs. Confirmed again 1 month ago at our vet when we had them for their annual exam and shots. They up charged us to 26lbs after weighing our dog on their scale. Higher cost for a dog over 25lbs. Yesterday, a new groomer (Castle) took our dogs in at 8:15 am. We had a friendly interaction, and I told her we were not picky after she told us she was alone, and her grooming is slow because she is a new groomer, and doesn't want to cut or nick any dog. I told her to just do the best she can, and if going slow was what she had to do then that's what her style is. We had a nice interaction, and she just wanted me to know that she was working there alone, and had other dogs coming in so it might take awhile. I received a phone call around 9:30 am, and Castle was relaying that she wanted me to pick up our 13lb bichin mix because she was making strange sounds in the crate and biting the crate, and that she could not groom her because her skin had problems. We have never had an issue with any groomer grooming her, and any groomer she has had loves her sweet personality and friendly attitude. I felt badly for Castle because she was alone, and relayed 3 dogs were dropped off after I left and she was overwhelmed because she was alone in the salon, and because our dog was biting the cage, we needed to pick her up so she didn't hurt herself. Have never ever seen this small and sweet dog bite a crate, cage or anything for that matter. My husband went with me to pick up our dog, and our other dog stayed to he groomed. We picked up our dog, and we were all friendly to each other. My husband there was witness to the interactions. Our dog was bathed, but not groomed. She does have skin issues, but nothing severe, and she is vet cleared and gets spots of hard knots at times. She was supposed to be euthanized two years ago due to being put in a shelter and nobody wanted her due to being shaved down with bad knots. Now, two years later, her skin is nearly 100% better than it was, and no other groomer ever complained or denied grooming her. We took her home, and my husband went back to pick up our other dog at 1:30 pm. 5 hours after dropping him off. Castle relayed to me on the phone that she had to stop grooming him a few times to do nail trims of other dogs coming in so it took her awhile. She told me how they are a volume store, and that we should consider a VIP treatment package for our dog because she could not groom. That she just was not comfortable grooming her. I called the store today to speak with Kim, the store Manager just to relay our experience, and that Castle was alone and overwhelmed yesterday. She offered to reimburse us for the bath of the dog that could not be groomed so we went back to get that refund. What happened next shocked my husband and I. Outright untruthful statements from Castle saying I was not nice and several other untruths. That our dog had open sores on her. She did not have any open sores or we would not have been there. We have worked very hard for two years to save this dogs life, and bring her skin and hair back to a healthy state. We could not believe what we were hearing. I was very friendly to this groomer, and she was friendly to me as well. We had an issue previously regarding the weight of our dog, but wanted to give this another try. We are adults and professional people with respect for others so these untruthful statements should have been addressed with the groomer. Instead, the Manager (Kim) told us we could never bring our dogs back to them because the groomers were not comfortable with us. We had already made the decision never to go back, but what an odd way to manage a business. Very unprofessional. Our dog that was actually groomed came home with the worst haircut he has ever had. read more

Rude staff. I took my dog for grooming by appointment. They had groomed him once before. I was taking him to different groomer for some time and decided to take him back to petco for grooming. This time They refused to groom my dog. My dog is 15 pounds. Has anxiety and fears. He was uncomfortable. They did some sort of testing making my dog anxious and uncomfortable. They said they won't groom him. As groomers, it's their job to use strategies to calm down my dog and perform grooming. This means they have inefficient and untrained staff. Crickets are of decent quality. But there's been a few times now I've been shorted. Just paid for 30, received 16 living and another 20 or so dead. I told her the bag looked light, and that's when she came back with the mostly dead crickets. I wanted to tell her she was an idiot, because they were clearly dead-- but I don't know what it would've accomplished. It's not the $5 and change I'm mad about, it's the hour and a half round trip drive it takes to get there (or anywhere) to buy the crickets. I recently adopted a small animal from this location, upon bringing her home we noticed she had blood in her urine. I called the store to find a resolution as my children were already attached to her and I was told that she was fine before the adoption and could return her, I don't believe Petco intentionally avoided caring for the guinea pig, I just think it was overlooked given the color of their bedding. Seeing how the symptoms presented themselves, the day of adoption I was looking for a treatment plan, not a refund. After my initial call to the store, I contacted corporate and was told someone would be contacting me in 24-48hrs with a resolution, the following day I received a call back from the manager explaining I could return the guinea pig, and then they would seek treatment from their private veterinarian services, and if she needs treatment she would remain at Petco until treatment is complete and then we could readopt her. The manager attempted to "ease" my mind by sharing insight that female guinea pigs do go into heat. But after further research, I discovered guineas do not shed blood while in heat. I'm just not understanding why we have to return the pet for her to get treatment, given she was ill when she was adopted. As of this point, we still haven't come to a resolution but will update when I do. read more

This store team is GREAT. All the groomers are really cautious about their job and do a beautiful job. Our groomer is Carol, and she is simply THE BEST !!!!! She is dedicated to perfection, she do an awesome job on Rusty. She is not just a groomer, is an important part of our family because she also take care of Rusty's health and well-being. This store is struggling, the last two times I was in this store there was a manager who was a lady and she was very angry. Refused to help an older gentleman in front of me and very rude about it, refused to help someone with fish and then started complaining to me about lack of breaks. It is clear they are short staffed and she told me corporate doesn't give a *!%! , I went back thinking maybe she was just having a bad, overwhelming day as we all do and she was again very blatantly rude. Gave grooming dept one more chance after they screwed me over a few years ago. Made an apt more than 2 weeks ago for my 2 dogs to be groomed. I was told to bring rabies certificates. I said "can you call my vet as you have done in the past in case I for get them?" Guess they were too lazy. Got a few things to juggle these days and ended up forgetting them,shocker. And my vet was closed when they did try to call when I asked her to. ( it was a Sat) They have legit town licenses and rabies tags. She said I could have switched them. The bettas are in bad condition frequently, the staff give out bad advice, and a lot of the reptiles in their care aren't receiving proper husbandry. Be smart and stay away from these terrible corporations. Their bearded dragons and leopard geckos are on calcium sand, which is terrible for them. An ounce of research would show you that. Even people who are pro-substrate advocates/bioactive advocates would NEVER recommend calcium sand. Also, the beardie enclosures don't really seem to have basking spots? It seems like the whole tank is 80 degrees, which is supposed to be the cool end of their tank? Not the entire tank temp? I kind of doubt they even have a UV light, which I'm no beardie expert but I know they need that. The hermit crabs had pure sloppy mud for their substrate(3 enclosures I believe, I had pictures of two of them but I'm pretty sure all looked nasty. You could literally see the excess water sitting there. The substrate also was no where near deep enough for hermit crabs. I understand you want customers to be able to see them, but you shouldn't sacrifice your animal's husbandry just to make more money. Iguanas also had some stuck shed, another sign of improper husbandry. Their bettas always look sad and pathetic too, but I couldn't stand being in there anymore to look at the rest of the animals. Petsmart isn't any better. Both need to stop selling animals. Shop local everyone! read more

Store clerk refused to sell me any fish for my new aquarium setup. Backstory: on a lark I decided to revive my childhood hobby of keeping a mid sized fish tank and a handful of fish. So, I drive down to Petco, picked out a tank and chemical supplies, and got it up and running and chemically balanced. Then I went to purchase the fish, and the cashier bluntly told me that they are not for sale. What?! You mean to tell me that I spent 300 fucking dollars on equipment only to be told "we don't have a license to sell fish sir." Are you serious? You literally have walls of fish in the store, and absolutely no signage posted to indicate any problems with "licensing." No, based on how trashy the store looked, how stupid and inexperienced the cashier was, and how sleepy and mute the manager was, I can only reach one conclusion. You were too lazy to get off your fat ass and get me the fish I wanted! I immediately went to Petsmart and had a perfect experience. I was helped promptly by knowledgable staff who were courteous and conversational. If I hadn't already set up my tank I would have returned everything I bought and given all of my business to Petsmart. Good riddance Petco. read more

Brought our rescue in for grooming. Said they could take us right away. An hour later, called said our dog bit the technician. She is a very docile dog..when we got there, they had her for an hour and did nothing... She came out of the back room petrified... And an abrasion and bruise on her nose. Said she got it from the cage, barking. That's when I knew the whole thing was a lie. .. You see, she is a VERY submissive dog, and she has NEVER barked...or been aggressive (even when she was being attacked). I feel they are lying to cover someone's abusive treatment of our rescue dog. We've always had a very positive experience at the Petco in North Conway. Because we live an hour away, it's not always possible to get over there to have our dogs groomed but when we do, they always do a great job. What's also great is even though we don't go often, they know us over there and love our dogs as, they've been grooming them since we adopted them last year. Once we finally got set up to begin our training lessons with Melanie, we were really happy and she's been a huge asset in helping us get on the same page with our puppy. However, getting to that point was pretty ridiculous. After our beloved husky puppy, Ruka, decided to eat through his crate and eat part of our mattress, we immediately called Petco to discuss training. No trainer was available to talk, but Nick (who introduced himself as the manager) assured us that if we came in the next day with our dog's crate that we could talk to a trainer and try out public classes to see if we want to sign up. We disassembled Ruka's crate and drove 40 minutes to Petco and went in at the time we had agreed on the night before - 5pm. When I told an employee what we were there for she called up a manager (I think his name was Eli) and he had no idea what I was talking about as there was no class at night and the trainer wasn't even there and he'd have the dog trainer call us the next day and we'd get a discount off of our training classes because of the headache this Nick guy caused us. A week went by with no phone call so I finally called again after we had another big problem with Ruka and I finally talked to the trainer who had NO idea about anything, nobody had ever said a word to her and she was very apologetic. We then scheduled training and went in to pay for the classes (never got the discount I was promised). The following Wednesday when we showed up for the private classes we had paid hundreds of dollars for, the trainer wasn't even there. The managers didn't even schedule her for that day. If she hadn't come in for us on her day off, we would have cancelled, but she's such a great trainer and nice person that we stayed. Overall, we're pretty disappointed with how we were treated. My fiance and I shop Petco exclusively and very very often as we spoil our dog way too much. This made us feel like our loyalty wasn't appreciated in the slightest. Shame. read more

What a joke. Bought a defective product. Had to drive back for a replacement/exchange less than an hour later, receipt in hand wanting an even exchange for the same thing. They told me I had to fill out paperwork with my personal info on it to do the exchange. So not only did I waste my time, and wear and tear on my truck, and gas (big V8), but they wanted my person info, and for me to waste more time, just to get the product I bought. STAY AWAY AND GO TO PETSMART!!! I have been a customer for many years and spend about $200 every month. Well not anymore. I called the store and asked them to put an item at the front register for my husband to pick up. I live one hour away and he drives by on his way home. They put the item up front he asked for the item and the guy at the register DJ said there was nothing there. My husband had to go pick out the item he got the wrong thing. I called to ask what went wrong, this was not a difficult request. The manager looked and found the item that was put there for him to pick up. Tomorrow is my day off and I have to drive one hour to the store and pick up the correct item and another one to get back home. The manager offered a percentage off for my troubles. Did I mention that I live an hour away. I'll go pick it up and I hope you realize I will never step into this store again. I know how important reviews are to you. Brother in law bought a water dragon from these guys and it didn't survive. After less than 30 days. Went in to get a refund and the girl went up one side and down the other of him. He has a mental illness and does. Or defend himself. She told him he killed it and he would never be allowed to buy anything there again. He left devastated. Sister in law catches wind land calls the store demanding answers. Finally gets somewhere with them and the girl fabricated a story saying that he told them he put it in the freezer when he first got it. Complete lie because he took it over to the in-laws so they could care for it right after he got it.(also he bought 2 and the second one is doing great.) they gave him a refund finally. In-laws has gone in a few times to ask for advice on care, not a single person told them to buy crickets. Every person told a conflicting story about how to care for these animals. This place is terrible. Not knowing your job is one thing, but to treat a customer like that is disgusting. I will never go there again and make sure no one I know will ever go there again. Traveled several hours to Petco to get some supplies for our two new kitties. On arrival noticed prices where extremely more expensive in the store than online. Example is a bag of Purena Kitten Chow is $12.99 on the website and they were selling it for 18.99. I asked the the clerk who then asked the manager if they could sell for the internet price and manager was extremely rude and made it a big NO. At that point I noticed several other items we had prices for on the internet were more expensive. We then decided to leave and went to Petsmart up the road. I will say I'm glad we did. The store is so much more cleaner and better atmosphere. Not only that their prices were amazingly cheaper. Same brand and model cat carrier that was $51 at Petco was $34.99. Toys for cats also much much cheaper. Arm and Hammer brand litter was $19.99 at Petco and it normal price was 12.99 and on sale for $10.99. AMAZING...... Finally the food we wanted to by that was 18.99 at petco and petco website listed it for $12.99, well it was $13.99 at petsmart. The best part is petsmart price matched petcos web price and sold it for $12.99.
