Vetco in Kinnelon is a great veterinarian group. The staff is very professional and knowledgeable. They explain costs up front for services so there's no surprise cost. If you enroll in monthly plan for 25.00 a month you get your appointment fee waived, saving $90. In addition accruing points for shopping Petco. We drive all the way to Rt 23 to shop here because they carry more inventory than the closer to home stores near by. My wife does her research on food and treats and she will only buy the ones with a healthy for cats and dogs rating by reliable testing organizations. Prices are fair although Chewy can beat them for items like dog toys. Overall, our experience has been very positive - friendly, clean, welcoming and will carry a heavy package out if you ask. I love this Petco or should I say my dogs do! It's conveniently located in a shopping center that also houses my bank. It's also good that Marshall's is right next door and my wife can shop there while I shop here. There's a large variety of wet and dry dog food along with the gourmet stuff that my finicky dogs turn their nose to. I'm always looking for something new for my dogs acquired taste which they don't have. I have an aquarium at home and their selection of fish, both salt and fresh water is decent. I particularly like the tarantulas and heard that they make excellent pets but my wife would divorce me if I brought one home so I settle for the fish. They offer grooming services and I now see that they have what looks like veterinarian services. read more

This review is for our last interaction with this local Petco. Have taken our previous dog here for grooming for years and recently wound up taking over someone's rescue (long story). We always went to Tanya (who is 6 stars by the way and highly recommended). Also spent plenty of money on toys and other accessories and have been happy. Our new rescue didn't have any training so decided to try Petco. Trainer was friendly enough and the first few sessions went well. Our third or fourth time we had the dog bathed the same day. I have allergies and we found that keeping the dog trimmed makes that not an issue. This particular day the trainer goes up to Tanya and starts grilling her on why we are bathing the dog so much (we got her groomed once and bathed once in 5 or 6 weeks mind you) and starts lecturing my wife that we should "rehome" the dog if I have allergies.... Rehome a rescue because I get the sniffles, are you kidding me??? Not sure why this trainer (L) felt it was her business to stick her nose in and lecture us on our pet. Not only didn't it make any sense, she doesn't know us, the dog or anything about our situation. Here's an idea, keep your opinions to yourself on things that don't concern you and weren't consulted on. My guess is she is a "let me speak to the manager" type. I'm not. We Just took all of our business somewhere else. We will miss Tanya but not doing business with a company that operates like this. Note to your manager, might be time for a sit down, who knows who else left without complaining . Pissing off customers in this environment not a great strategy. read more

Horrible customer service. The grey/blonde haired girl working in the aquatics department on Sunday 12/27/20 in the afternoon was extremely rude and condescending. I have been keeping fish for 15 years and I know all about the aquarium nitrogen cycle. Before even explaining that I was going to use seasoned filter media from my existing tank to cycle the new one, she cut me off and said she would refuse to sell me fish the same day I bought a tank. "I'm telling you, they won't survive"... okay sweetheart. That made it real easy. I left my cart full in the store and headed down to PetSmart in Wayne and they got me all set with everything I needed. Fish included! And guess what? They survived. Imagine! Management needs to train employees better. I like shopping places where the sales associates don't cut me off mid sentence, to start. UPDATE 1/16/21: My PetSmart fish are still alive! read more

Only 1 star i would put less but the lights were on and the store seemed clean. The issue I have is i am setting up a 500 gallon 8' wide 3' deep 3' high aquarium. I ordered hundreds of pounds on sand for stingrays and Morey eels. Because of spine surgery i have been taking my time since Aug slowly building all the plumbing, the sand, the dual wet dry systems, pumps etc etc etc... it takes time. Making room for the holidays i wanted to return the 10 extra perfect condition bags of sand. I was told at the register by LAUREN that she could not find my order by phone#. I was asked how long ago i bought, i said at least 6 weeks ago, perhaps 90 days. I was then asked to go home, find the receipt, online order, or confirmation. Not happy but i was like ok.. but then i asked LAUREN as i was walking away could she look up the order by last name or email, now ANNE came over and then tried using my name/email and presto the order came up about 90 days old. I was then shown the 30 no MAX for returns on the counter - i said i did not buy it here i bought it on line. I figured worse case i would get store credit, with a 500 gallon tank i'll need $40 a month in food blood worms etc, plus fish plus parts plus chemicals etc etc. But then i stopped in my tracks i turned around and said to LAUREN - WAIT... I said i told you upfront it was 6 weeks ago to 90 days ago as the order came from online in 3 deliveries. I said WAIT you were going to send me home load sand into Denali, unload at home, find papers another day, reload up again, travel again (30 mins each way - 1 hour round trip) and if i brought back the sand with the papers you would have told me there was nothing you could do... I asked LAUREN - There is nobody online, there is nothing going on, but you would 1- send me home to get paperwork that would mean nothing and you had no problem with that - AND - rather then lift your tatted up so cool arms to the register and check an email or last name you would rather i just drive around!!!! I was told by LAUREN - Have a nice day sir... WHAT LAZINESS - If LAUREN put in the same effort into learning customer returns, how the system works, how to check by email as she does into her overly makeup'd eyes and tats she would be a better employee. I am calling my credit card company to dispute the entire charge to get someones attention and i am going to spend $22.00 online to file a small claims against petco, the manager and LAUREN, now they can waste their time sitting in Passiac County Court Room all day waiting for the case to be called, Passiac county court is fun... parking is even better.. How lazy can an employee be... could not even ask for an email or phone number to check the account, names sure a million Smiths out there but Emails? emails are shared by too many people? Took our dog there for grooming. All records were up to date, but they refused to groom the dog because he has a skin allergy. "Bring him back when the allergy goes away." Um, it's an allergy-they don't "go away". When my wife explained that the dog takes medication for his skin allergy, they said it's against company policy to groom him. Our local groomers never have an issue, not sure why a huge company like Petco can't handle grooming pets with allergies. Poor service. read more

With two cats and a large dog I spend quite of bit of time and money at Petco in Kinnelon. I always find the staff to be friendly and they all know my dog's name... some even know mine (lol). The store is pretty well organized and is overall clean. I visit at least twice a week since it's close, my pup enjoys shopping and I attend classes for him. I prefer Donna to other trainers I have met at other places, she has a no nonsense approach and doesn't waste time on irrelevant things. I was reading some of the other reviews and will comment on them... Sandy S..... Clean up after your own pet, the staff's job is to help you make purchases, not clean up after your dog when you don't let it relieve itself before taking it somewhere. As far as not allowing your pet to be groomed without the proper paperwork.... take solace in knowing they didn't let any animals in there that didn't have exactly what was necessary for the protection of every other dog including yours. Petco's a really great store for pet supplies. I come here all the time for pet food, treats, supplements, clothing, and toys. It really is a pet super store. They have everything you could possibly need for your pet. The staff here are not just very knowledgeable about the products, but they're also, very knowledgeable on pet training and even gave me a few tips on separation anxiety. They also, offer pet training/dog school classes. The store has a really wide variety of of dog food, ranging from good to very high end. I spoil my dog, so she gets the really high end stuff. The supplement section is pretty impressive, I didn't know so many different pet supplements existed. I get the "Pet Tabs" which are basically a doggy multivitamin. They have a big selection of toys. They have a ton of plush toys and all kinds of squeaky toys. I however, get only get hard toys, because my dog rips anything else to shreds within minutes...smh. They also have pet grooming, but the policies are a little weird. They require paperwork for proof of your dogs rabies shot and they won't accept a collar tag, it has to be the paperwork. So, if you lost the paperwork, your out of luck. They treat it like there's this big rabies pandemic; I don't think I've ever heard of someone's pet having rabies. When we took our Yorkie to be groomed, we told them to keep her hair a little long, yet they cut her hair short anyway. I'll stick to coming here for pet supplies. i have 3 long haired cream dachshunds, which i prefer them on the shorter side. i have been going to the Pet Co in Kinnelon NJ for years now. I have used Tonya who is a groomer there. She is the kindest dog loving person. She is kind, knowledgeable and super compassionate. She handles my dogs as if she is the mommy. She always does a wonderful job and my fur babies are not nervous or upset when I drop them off. Pet Co is lucky to have such a devoted animal lover working for them. She makes my fur babies as comfortable as she makes me. My fur babies get the best Spa treatment. I absolutely love the cuts on all three of them. Horrible customer service in this Petco location in Kinnelon,Nj. I went to return a $4.00 item and was given a hard time by three different employees at front counter. I had purchased a lot of items on my credit card there just a few days ago but didn't have my receipt. They would not exchange my item for a larger size since the item I bought was to small. They asked for my driver Licence and scanned the back. Then they still wouldn't return my item. I will never go back here again. Nasty attitudes of 3 employees that should be fired !! I've been a customer at this Petco for about two years now. Every encounter has been normal except for today. I went in because the website stated that a product (natural balance salmon and brown rice puppy) was in stock. It was not in stock (no big deal). Their website probably wasn't updated on time. I decided to ask a sales associate just in case if it was in stock in the back. She took me over to where I was before and saw that they didn't have it. She asked me a bunch of questions: what breed is your puppy? how old? Which is fine but I was just there to buy food. Anyway, I stated that I saw that they have the duck flavor but it was grain free and that I would like the one with grain. The sales associate suddenly went on a full blown rant and was like why not? (feed your dog grain free). So I told her that two of my vets advised not to feed my dogs grain free food because of the possible link to a heart issue. She then straight up said that grain free diets are not linked to DCM and that the study was inconclusive. She was like " did you ask them why? They won't tell you because they don't know! They didn't say what breed the dogs were in the study or what vaccines they took." I just stood there very awkwardly and then said "okay thanks" when she was done. Long story short, I just wanted to know if they had the food or not. The lady (blondish hair, blue eyes, mid fifties-mid 60s years old and is apparently a bull dog breeder) made me very very uncomfortable. She was very condescending and had a know it all attitude which was so unnecessary and unprovoked. She could have just said that they didn't have the food I was looking for and looked into their next shipment or she could have offered to order it for me (like she could have actually helped me). If I could take a guess she was just waiting for the opportunity to school just any random person about the topic (even though I didn't ask about it or argue with her). I simply stated what I was looking for. I was left a bit distraught. I ended up driving 20 minutes to a small pet supply store (JB) in Oakland and they actually had the food I was looking for. I'd be shocked if anyone read this review but this happened and I don't think I would go back or if I do, I won't ask for help. My anxiety was through the roof after that. read more

They are very helpful i got all my ferrets from here. They always have nice things for customers such as doing the pictures with Santa. Always have what you need or looking for i never really had a problem here at all just love to see all the animals they have in the store. I also love they started selling merchandise from puppies make me happy. Terrible customer service. They wouldn't let me buy a hamster on the grounds of the insipid accusation that I was purchasing the hamster for a minor. I verified that I was 18 years old with proper identification. Regardless of my intentions, as the customer it is my right to be able to purchase their products or animals. Before I was refused, I was heckled unnecessarily about the size of the cage I owned as apparently it had to be the right fit for the hamster. I showed a picture of the cage, but this did not satisfy the employee, who stated that the picture did not provide enough evidence that the cage was the proper size. All in all I am extremely disappointed with the lack of service that I received and the lack of respect I was shown despite the fact that I was the customer. I do not see myself revisiting this Petco anytime soon. read more

The people who work here are friendly and you can tell most of them are animal lovers. The store is well stocked and usually have what we need. The parking lot is a little bit crazy at times. The prices are okay, I wouldn't say better than PetSmart but it's a lot closer to where I live. I would recommend this store to people I know. read more

I'm only doing this review based on grooming. I brought my little morkie to get a haircut and bath. The people working in grooming are so nice and you can tell that they really enjoy their job. They are very friendly and good with pets. The first time my dog went she was very skeptical and refused to leave my side. The second time she went i handed the leash over and she just went along her merry way. They worked magic and out came my dog smelling great and looking fantastic. There's seriously nothing that warms my heart than people who treat your dog with the care that you would expect for a family member. read more

I LOVE these groomers! I have taken my Papillon Pappy to many groomers over his 13yrs and he's gotten a few over priced bad hair cuts. He has arthritis and they are so gentle (they groom in a glassed in room so you can watch) and the cuts GREAT! A special shout out to Tanya and Hannah! Hannah cut him this time and he looks amazing! Once day could be we can not cut nails unless the groomer is certified by the store come back another day this was with an appointment. Today it was we don't do cats on Saturday again store policy. I always thought if you have a policy that involves the consumer it should be visibly posted.SO I drove to the store for nothing. Never again. I pretty much know what my experience there is going to be like, and last night's was typical. I go to Petco to buy crickets to feed my kid's reptile. I enter the store and walk all the way to the reptile department in the back, and like most times find no one working in the back. So I walk to the front of the store: the only associate I see is ringing up a sale at the register. I walk back again to the rear of the store. I see, and make eye contact with, a young woman in one of the aisles on the side, but she's not wearing a Petco apron or nametag. In a hallway at the very back of the store, I hear a woman talking to someone in an office. She sees me and right away tells me "I don't work here", and points inside. The manager, I suppose, sitting at the desk, sees me standing in the doorway and says "one sec", then asks me what I need. He gets on the PA and requests an associate to help. I return to the aisle and here comes the girl I saw earlier; turns out she works there after all. There are pushbuttons on every column in the main aisle, from the front of the store to the back, and every one is marked "broken". If Petco doesn't want to pay enough workers to operate this store, they should at least fix these help buttons. Other than that, a pretty typical retail experience. I really miss the pet shop that used to be across Route 23 from here, which was forced to go out of business not long after Petco moved in. read more

Unfortunately, common sense, isn't so common. I have been a patron of this store since the doors opened. I have seen staff come and go. The past couple of years, I have used grooming and Tonya is great for my one dog! My other dog is older and has short hair and I don't groom her as often but she really needed her nails trimmed and I'm terrible at performing that task. My vet charges $18 for a nail trim and I decided to go to Petco because they are inexpensive and you can just walk in. After wrangling the dog into the store, a groomer popped her head out and said the other groomer would be with me in a sec. Now, as my dog relieved herself as I stood there, the cashier, who at that time wasn't busy, yelled over, Mam, we have stuff down the aisle to clean that up. Really? I'd have to walk all the way down the aisle to get a bag and paper towel, leave the pile there, and come all the way back to clean it up? There were bags right on the counter where I stood, I took one and cleaned up the poop. Out comes the stylist. He won't cut my dog's nails because the rabies they have on file, aren't up to date. I say, "She has the tag and her license, all she needs is a nail trim". No, that's store policy. I walked down the aisle to grab the disinfectant and finished the task of cleaning up after my dog, walking in and out of the store to throw everything out, outside. I know we live in a world of liability but sometimes common sense and compassion should supersede that. Lesson? Even though they advertise walk in nail trims, make sure you have your dog's updated paperwork and don't bring your dog there to shop, the staff isn't helpful at all. read more

while dealing with a 6 year old child, we lost a hamster, went to the petco and purchased another one. this one unfortunately passed away as well within 3 days. Now, after explaining death to our 6 year old son yet again, we have been left waiting for a veterinarian from the company that does not seem to care about my sons emotional well being. I find the entire situation to be in poor taste. I would like for someone in the company that has some form of compassion to contact him and apologize.the way that the entire situation has been handled is terrible and if possible I would never visit that store, or company again. if this is the way that situations are handled in general, then why would anyone use this company for more than an overpriced grocery store for pets and products. read more

After being a loyal customer since I adopted my first pet 6 years ago I don't think I will be returning. I had a grooming appointment for my two dogs scheduled for this afternoon and called to confirm that someone could help me bring them in from the car. The manager refused to offer assistance saying it is against company policy. I explained to her that it has never been a problem in the past and with two large dogs and a toddler I really need the assistance. She offered zero suggestions on how to solve the problem so I canceled my appointments and will not be returning. I guess this is the kind of customer service you get at a chain store. We spend hundreds of dollars every month on food, litter and grooming between our 4 animals and they just lost our business. read more

Do not go here for Puppy Play Time with Donna. I brought my 4 1/2 month old puppy to Kinnelon Petco for the Puppy Play Time class. There were only 3 other dogs when I got there. I kept my dog on his leash to meet the other dogs because I wanted to see how he would behave. While another dog was on his leash and the owner looked on, that dog bit my puppy. The owner did nothing and then she was advised by Donna to take him off the leash! I noticed a few minutes later that my puppy's face was bleeding. Donna "the trainer" responded that the bite didn't break through his skin, so my dog was fine and to stop babying him. The owner mentioned to Donna that her dog was acting up, but they still did nothing to correct his behavior. I went against my gut and allowed my puppy to keep socializing. I continued to watch my puppy closely as the other owner sat in the corner. Donna kept telling me that she was a trainer and I was the one harming my puppy. Then the same dog bit my puppy again and again the owner and Donna were unfazed. Donna's response this time was that the same thing would happen in a dog park. Well I didn't take my dog to a dog park. I took my dog to a supervised class at Petco that claims on it's website that the class is a "safe and fun environment." As a trainer, Donna should have gotten involved. Instead of scolding me for checking on my puppy, she should have had the other owner put that dog back on a leash and used that time to train the dog. Please do not allow Donna to look after your dog. In a matter of 10 minutes my puppy was bitten twice as Donna just stood and watched. read more
