I called this facility to tell them that I had adopted a scared/aggressive dog from the shelter. I…read moreexplained everything to them that my dog was extremely kind to me, but so scared of other people. I asked if their classes would help me. The trainer assured me that they have had many dogs like my shelter dog! I have had another dog before and was only used to training a puppy, not a dog that needed special help (such as a rescue dog). We went to a class and they told me I needed a prong collar. They said that is the only way to fix my dog. Sharp tugs to get him in line was what he needed.....a firm hand...etc. In order to teach him to lay down you put your foot on the leash by their collar so they cannot get up! Happily my dog was kicked out of class after the second class! They said they were to worried to have him there! I was so embarrassed! I had explained his situation to them before we even showed up! They even requested i return their "caution dog bandana". What!!?? I then called TAPS, where I rescued him, to recommend a trainer to me. They gave me the name of the person they work with. This person was a godsend to me and my dog. The trainer had so much education in dealing with scared dogs. The trainer taught us how to use positive reinforcement and highly motivating treats to get the proper behavior. I cannot believe how far my dog has come! I often am bothered by the "choke collar" and methods that Heartland taught. I hope everyone reads this and finds a more positive approach.I'm so proud of my pooch! My dog is my world. If you feel the same please do not go to this facility!

I have taken four dogs to this facility for a total of 13 classes. In response to some other…read morereviews, I have never seen anyone REQUIRE the use of a training ("choker") collar or prong collar. Occasionally they have been highly recommended, as they can be a very useful tool if used effectively. I have, however seen some dogs do amazing on prong collars and if used appropriately, (which is taught), they are an amazing tool to teach your dog to walk calmly on a leash. A couple of easy, gentle corrections can have your dog learning very quickly. For those that I have seen insist on using a buckle collar during the learning portion of training, their dogs have continued to pull on the leash and drag their handlers until the very last class. Exactly what they're trying to avoid by taking the class to begin with. All my experiences have been positive. I had the "military man" instructor at one point, and I never saw him choke a dog. Our training collar broke on my giant breed as well on a very light correction. Come to find out, it was a bad batch of collars they had ordered. I have seen some of the worst dogs come out amazing in the end with confident handlers who are not afraid to make a correction when needed, and realize that corrections ARE needed at times. The instructors have always been friendly to the customers and the dogs but will not hesitate at times to be truthful if it's needed. I've no problems returning to Heartland as I've always left happy and with a well trained dog.

The bad: This place charges A LOT! I have had the impression more than once that finding every opportunity to add charges during an exam is included in their staff training. Also, there is little/no transparency with charges ahead of time. I am putting it out there so people can be aware. We boarded our dogs and paid a lot extra for their "luxury run". It was supposed to have a tv that played soothing videos and be equipped with cameras that we could log into and check on them at our convenience. We were not allowed to see this in person because of "safety protocol" and the morning we checked them in we were informed that the cameras were down. We had no way of knowing if we got anything that we were charged extra for, and we were charged a lot extra. They were unapologetic about this and did not offer to reduce the bill for the services that were not provided. Over $200 for 24 hours and I have no idea if we got anything we payed extra for. Pros: skilled vets and usually can get an appointment quickly Cons: they squeeze you for every dime and you must take it on faith that you are getting what you paid for.

i took my dog here for their Beginner class. class was 6p-730p & it was convenient for my work…read moreschedule & close to home. my dog is a rescue that i'd had for just over a year at this point & i realize i'm still getting to know his/her queues & behaviors. i'd informed the instructor of this when signing up for the class. i'd also informed the instructor that my dog was not treat motivated at all. she told me not to worry that she could get him/her to take treats. i was willing to see what she could do differently. i let her know that i'd been through obedience classes before at another local facility with my other dog - she did not have positive things to say about that place, which i found unprofessional, but blew off as a passing comment when signing up. the first night, the instructor talked so long that by 7:10p we had not done any training & were still talking about her training philosophy & her pets. she spent some of that time comparing her training philosophy & techniques to one of the other local facilities (the one i'd gone to years before) & constantly criticizing. worse, she would look to me when she'd do that & a couple of times asking me to chime in or agree - Very Unprofessional. we ended up staying until almost 8p so that we could get some training in. she did assure us that subsequent classes would start on time but we'd probably always go about 15 minutes over - that kind of defeated the purpose of fitting into my schedule. she brought her own dogs to class to serve as examples, which i would totally expect. however, as nice as her dogs were, they didn't really behave all that well. multiple times the first night, she'd put her dog on a sit/stay & within a minute or two, the dog would walk off. she would ask the dog to come & it didn't. her response? "Really? Are you kidding me?" she told us to get used to that phrase because we'd be using it a lot. at the same time, she told us not to repeat commands, only say them once. but we were not to continually correct our dog, only say the command once. i've been through obedience classes so this is not an unheard of concept. however, our "correction" was the Really/Are You Kidding Me response. i was floored that this was a technique. i held on thinking it will get better, this is just 1st night settling in. at the 2nd class things still did not start on time & it seemed very disorganized. there were no Assistants so that made things a bit disorganized. i was determined to see this through - it was only 5 weeks. she had a different dog for her examples, but this dog was not obedient either. i had to remind myself that when describing her philosophy, she said she didn't believe in Obedience, she believed in a Relationship with your dog. that's all well and fine, but her relationship with her dog(s) seemed to be they could do what they wanted & listen to her when they felt like it. my dog is too high strung for that to be an effective practice for us - i want my dog to "obey" for his own safety, not so i feel empowered. this was not going well. the final straw came at the end of that 2nd night. we were training our dogs on the Focus/Look At Me skill. my dog was doing pretty good. the instructor came over to see for herself & tried to give him/her treats but my dog wouldn't take them, as i'd informed her at sign-up. the instructor said "well, i can't get him/her to take a treat, see if you can." Really/Are You Kidding Me? my mistake, i thought that is what you do! at the end of the class we had one more skill to demonstrate (i don't recall what it was). she walked over to check my dog and he/she performed it fairly well. the instructor then said, i kid you not, "wow that's really good for a InsertBreedHere! and i don't even like InsertBreedHere!". luckily that was the end of class & we left, deciding not to return & just lose our money.
