Upon her passing, we contacted Ng Fook as we chose them to handle the entire process including sending the Mortuary attendants to pick up her body within a short time after being released. We later met with Alex Lee who explained to us the options available to prepare the decease one's funeral viewing. There is a price list outlining the costs for each service such as casket, makeup, hair, flowers, embalming, music band, monks to chant, room size, etc. Alex then told us what the customs are with a Chinese wake and funeral explaining step by step such as greeting all arriving guests, bowing, incents, joss paper money, knelling before the casket, waist and arm bands for the family, small flower to hold onto for 3 days, meals for the family after the service, etc. There is even an obituary section on their website showing information about the deceased, the viewing times and the final resting place. Everything starts to add up but we had an idea of what to pay beforehand as it was important for us to pick the right place for my Mom's wake. Upon the final stop at the cemetery, the staff continued with guiding us with what to do, positioning the family at the chapel, coin inside the envelope, consuming a piece of candy, stepping over a small flame, etc. Being in this business, the staff has to deal with constant sadness, stress, unhappiness, grief and turnovers of their customers. But it was assuring that everything went well making the entire ordeal manageable for my family and that my Mom was able to reach her final destination and to rest in peace. They quickly took possession of my brother before I arrived in New York and it was a comfort to my family that he was no longer in the city morgue while I flew out to NY. They made the entire process of his wake and cremation as simple and gentle as possible. Mr. Lee was the one who prepared my brother for viewing. Mr. Lee is an artistic genius, due to throat cancer my brother did not look as he once did but Mr. Lee worked a miracle and despite the circumstances of his death my brother looked as if he had just settled down for a nap on my sofa. I half expected his ankles to be crossed as was his habit in life. While searching for a funeral home I found out that the one my family traditionally used was having legal issues over quality and was forced to look elsewhere to arrange funeral services. I'd contacted several funeral homes before deciding to go with FAS due to their location and was surprised to find that they were the least expensive out of all the funeral homes I'd contacted. They were budget friendly without being skimpy. Located in an area with several funeral homes, they are small, not so flashy and easily overlooked but they provide wonderful service and are kind and compassionate. I was shocked how well maintained it was kept and how quiet and peaceful the area was as you walked around. I was also surpised to see people just sitting with their dogs or just relaxing on benches. The cemetery was started before germ theory took hold in this country, so all the burial vaults are lined with marble--hence the name. Because most headstones are flush with the ground, there is a peaceful, pastoral feeling. I was last there on an open day, and I saw a few people bring in their dogs; some dogs in the city have never felt grass beneath their feet! Truly great to see the reaction!
