    Carrot cake

Came here since I heard lots of things about the carrot cake so I made sure to order online beforehand. There was only 2 slices left when I snagged one. I'm glad I did because they sold out by the time I got there after work. Got the bangarang sandwich which has cream cheese with Portuguese herbs, cranberry, turkey and Swiss and got it grilled. Their other hot sandwich is the Bistro which I saw had a good cheese pull. There's at least 15 places to sit at inside. I asked for a potato salad with my sandwich and my friend got the Hawaiian Mac. So ..for $18 after tax and tip, we got a double Costco sized sample cup of whatever side we ordered which was disappointing. Sandwich was good. There's a water dispenser with free water. Carrot cake was not too sweet and moist. Is it the most epic carrot cake I've ever had? Nope. Would have liked more walnuts though.

The food is great. The service is great. The design of the deli is worth the trip alone. Huge selection of wines and beer. We eat there every time we're in Astoria.

The hype is real. The carrot cake is phenomenal. It's sweet but not toothache sweet. The cream cheese frosting is so tasty and comforting and the cake is even better which huge shreds of carrot. You almost feel like you're being healthy! For $5, I think it's totally worth the hype. Get one and indulge a little bit. Pro-tip: grab some items from their deli and head to the Astoria column for a picnic!

Amazing carrot cake but awesome chili as well! Fun convenience store with a small seating area where you can eat in food. Got the last piece of carrot cake so am super happy!

It reminded me of two Italian spots in Seattle's Pioneer Square. Very popular since most of the onsite seating were occupied (6/20/25). No surprise after glancing at their menu, easily I could gravitate towards several of their sandwiches. Lots of merch and deli items are also available to select from. I ended up ordering a half pound of proscuitto (0.52 lb for $17.67). This was carefully sliced thin, packaged, and wrapped carefully, which was duly noted and greatly appreciated. We paused at window counter seats and had to sample the purchase before departing. Absolutely delicious! Helped elevate a meal the next day too. I may have to return to indulge in one of their Italian sandwiches. Update: we did return to dine onsite at the same window counter seats (6/22/25). The Homie had the Hot Meatball ($14). Meaty with zesty sauce. I had the Salami Panini ($12), which reminded me of a fave Italian panini at Irwin's Bakery & Cafe in Seattle. Both were fantastic, hit the spot, clean plate club worthy, and definitely no takeout boxes needed! Gaetano's Market & Deli, a terrific find in Astoria!

Because we were driving through on our road trip, we decided to make a stop here for a late lunch this last Tuesday afternoon, around 2:15 pm. After we parked, we walked inside and headed towards the salad bar/ hot bar food area. After looking around (there is also a counter that you can order made to order sandwiches and burritos), I ended up deciding to purchase the following: Peanut Chicken Sesame Noodle Salad, $8.99- This was quite a massive portion so I only ended up eating about 1/3 of it and then had the rest over the next few days (I ended up mixing it with some chopped cucumbers and tomatoes that I had to make a large salad). I loved the peanut sesame dressing and noodles in this salad but wished there was more chicken. Mayak Egg Noodle Bowl, $8.99- My husband picked this salad for himself but I didn't have any. He thought it was good and appreciated something fresh, as his bowl had shredded cabbage, like my salad, and cucumbers and shredded carrots. Pumpkin Pie, $6.99- My husband saw this small pumpkin pie and decided to get it because he is such a big fan of it. I actually don't like pumpkin as much as when I was much younger. But I did like this pie and thought the flavors were well balanced, not too overly sweet. ---------------------------------------- (Total= $24.97) I really appreciated that the little dining area (there is also an outdoor dining area as well but because it had rained previously, we opted to sit inside) had plastic bowls and plates available for you to put your food in. This was helpful for me to be able to thoroughly mix my noodle salad since the dressing was mostly on the bottom. Then after I mixed it, I just put it back in the plastic container and only left about 1/3 of the salad in my bowl to eat. If I lived in this area, I would definitely be a regularly of this market (specifically for the prepared food area).

Here, the art of curing is not a craft but a calling. Lunch is a liturgy. The clam chowder arrives like a maritime memory-velvety, studded with tender-cheeked clams, each spoonful a foghorn in a bowl. The salmon burger, grilled to a rosy medium, defies the dry, crumbly fates of lesser patties; it is juicy, lush, and dressed with a tartar that brightens like a lighthouse flash. But the true epiphany? The lox on a bagel--silk-smooth, brined with the precision of a jeweler, draped over cream cheese that yields like fresh snow. It is not merely eaten; it is contemplated. We depart with coolers stuffed with their cold-smoked Sockeye salmon-amber-gold, peppery, almost buttery in its melt-destined for Manhattan bagels and late-night toasts. It travels like treasure. Yet Josephson's soul isn't found in the smokehouse alone-it lives in the warm, unhurried grace of its counter staff, each one wonderfully kind. Against the coldness of algorithms, this is hospitality as rebellion. Five stars? Insufficient. This is a constellation.

It was a good decision. Note for fellow travelers: their menu is small. They are a smokehouse that oh by the way has a small dining area as well, which they call the Chowder House. Small can be beautiful. Specialization has its benefits. We ordered the chowder and smoked salmon on rye. First, the chowder. It's the real deal, slightly thinner than some, but not too thin, and boy howdy delicious. Seriously, its some of the best. I would say it's up there with Gracie's Sea Hag in Depoe Bay. It does not skimp on the clams, and is chunky throughout. The smoked salmon on rye exchanges a bagel for rye toast, but keeps the rest of the traditional deli staple intact. There is cream cheese, capers, red onion, and, of course, the salmon. (I don't know where smoked raw salmon ends and nova lox begins. They seem to be the same.) This is where we begin to understand those benefits of specialization. It was simply the best I've had. It was well smoked and tasted fabulous with the rye. If you have passed this place by for years as well, stop it, and stop by. It's good stuff. They also ship their smoked salmon.
