No! This place was really disappointing. Came here based on reviews, but I. would caution anyone to steer clear of this place. It started with flat champagne drinks. That's just a fail, and it suggests a place that doesn't bother keeping things fresh. It kind of went downhill from there. We were looking for nice fresh fish and chips, wile we were out along the coast. We live near the coast ourselves, and are no strangers to good seafood. We decided to do the Cod and the Halibut fish and chips. While the halibut seemed fresh, the cod was waxy and looked old, and frankly i found it somehow mildly nauseating. I couldn't bring myself to teat it. The batter was crsipy, but lacked seasoning and tasted really flat (cardboard?). Aside from that, the coleslaw seemed pretty old soggy. Gross. Not impressed at all - some of the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Some people may like this kind of food - but i will actively avoid this place the next time in Astoria. Hard pass. i'm nauseous just thinking back to my experience here. Could hardly get away fast enough... read more

To start with, I had a really hard time finding this place because the building and signs are different than what is available online. The halibut was soft and wet rather than dry and meaty. The crab louie salad was underwhelming in both size and flavor. We spent over $60 and didn't feel like we got much. So what is the name of this place? read more

This place was exactly what I was looking for -- fresh seafood. Even with a little cool overcast, we still chose to eat it at the picnic tables right on the dock. It is quite literally a hole in the wall. The clam chowder has a delicious, well-seasoned base; and it's full of clams and potatoes. I appreciated the fact that the chowder was not too pasty -- just nicely creamy. My wife opted for a full bowl of the Ron's Phone Chowder, which adds a pile of shrimp and crab, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. I shared an order of salmon fish & chips with my wife, and the freshness of the fish made the meal (although the coating could have been a little crispier). They included plenty of perfectly cook fries, as well as cole-slaw and garlic bread. With the abundance of fresh seafood available on the coast, it's amazing how hard it is to find places like this serving the good stuff. Definitely worth many return visits. read more

Time seems to stand still here. The fish rotates but the quality of the product is as stable as it comes. This food is timeless. It's just flat out done right. This is our stop. We skip other restaurants to eat here sometimes twice a day while visiting. It's not fancy food and yet in it's own way it is. You eat with your eyes. We always do the seafood chowder. Why? Because it is the best I've ever had. The steamers come in a pile with not one empty clam. You get what you pay for. Now this lobster/langoustine melt is such a rich treat. Served on crispy baguette. It's a sexy dream. You can get about anything on a stick. It's the best and we love you NW Wild. read more

A true definition of a local treasure, Northwest Wild Products is a throwback to fish markets from a bygone era. Beautifully smoked salmon on a stick and remarkable perfectly fried razor clams (also served on a stick) will cause you to wonder, "What took me so long to discover this Northwest gem?" The seafood chowder made on site is uncommonly rustic, hearty and flavorful. And prices are oh so reasonable for freshly caught seafood. Service is outstanding and friendly and the outside dining area provides a huge bonus sitting right in front of the west mooring basin: yacht, boat, and marine going vessels galore provide eye candy with a view of the Columbia river, the Astoria bridge and the cannery pier hotel. Went on a Tuesday in April, kind of low season Positive: Breading on fried fish was tasty Nice kids menu Not rushed, more or less fine service Not great: The space is not very nice and had some questions about sanitation Scent was rough Fish in case not ideally stored and didn't appear as fresh as would expect from this type of space Skipped the crab, looking sad in a small aquarium read more

This place was the highlight of our trip! It was a little hard to find, but so worth it! We started with the best clam chowder we ever had! Then we ordered the fried razor clams on a stick (crunchy batter, little chewy on the ends, but delicious center), smoked salmon on a stick (wild, but kind of dry), steamers (clams served in their own clam juice in a mini bucket with garlic/butter bread on the side, must-try!), yearlings oysters (we paid a little more for these smaller ones, and it was worth it! So buttery, sweet and fresh, must-try), & crab melt (not our favorite). Overall, excellent service, great deal for the quality and quantity of seafood, fun/casual atmosphere (outdoor decorated bench seating), view of the marina (like 5 ft away was water), friendly dog outdoors there that looked like he belonged to the owner or staff of the restaurant! read more

After packing up our pop-up trailer and visiting the beach we decided to find lunch in Astoria and were thinking seafood. The waiter at Drina Daisy had mentioned a fish marked with a cafe so our daughter looked it up while we were driving toward Astoria. Northwest Wild Products is a bit hard to find unless you know it is there. We found it and there was even parking where we could fit with our RV trailer in tow. They are on the pier facing the water. There was an inside dining area but we didn't even look at it as there is a row of picnic tables outside and the sun was just burning through the overcast. I had a cup of clam chowder and a dungeness crab melt. My wife had a bowl of the "Ron's phone chowder" which came with shrimp and dungeness crab added. It had a bit too much pepper for my wife's taste but she liked it enough she ate almost all of it. The chowder was a New England style (the only real clam chowder in my opinion) with a smokey taste probably from the bacon. It was one of the best chowders I have had in a restaurant. My crab melt came open faced piled with loads of fresh dungeness crab and it was delicious. My daughter got the steamer clams to share with all of us, a crab cocktail, a shrimp cocktail to share with our grandson and our grandson got octopus on a stick. Everything was delicious - except the octopus. I wondered why he only ate a bite of it. They had it doused with an Asian inspired sauce which really overpowered the octopus. I ate the two remaining pieces on the stick and they were OK, but not as great as it should have been without the sauce. It sounds like some of the items on a stick are good, but you might want to ask before you order them. I almost tried the local Fish and Chips. If I go back there, I will as they are probably the only place on the west coast that does sturgeon and I would love to try it. One of the workers there told me how great it was, but I had already ordered and paid for my order. This is definitely another goto place in Astoria. You just can't beat a fish market that buys from fisherman coming right off their boats. In the long past I ate at a couple of dive restaurants in Eureka, CA that were owned by a seafood company and had the very best seafood. Northwest Wild Products is the only place I have been to since that has matched their quality with fresh seafood. read more

Northwest Wild Products - Dungeness crab melt. Unfortunately Picts of the chowder didn't turn out :( - Seafood Markets Near Me - Astoria, Oregon

Before I begin, let me start by saying this was the best clam chowder I've ever had in my life. We were in town for a couple of days and checked Yelp for Seafood. We saw the 5 stars and stopped in. *Street Parking is free. *There's indoor/outdoor seating, spaced for COVID. *There's fresh seafood. *They sell assorted bottled sauces and breading for raw/fresh-seafood take out. *There's a full menu of entrees, apps, drinks, and sides. We ordered the $36 Crab meal, which included one, full dungeness crab with a bowl of seasoned dipping butter, a side salad, a bowl of clam chowder, and a buttered roll. We were asked where we wanted to sit, and we told them outside. We sat outside, but they didn't come to clean the table or take the empty beer cup from the previous patron. When they brought our food, they still didn't clear the old beer cup away. They brought us a spoon for the soup, but no fork for the crab or the salad. When I asked for a to-go bowl, she said she'd be right back but never came returned. There was only one other party there, and it just didn't feel like they really needed or cared about the customers. Both of us found the crab to be very very dry and the salad came without dressing. The 3 stars are all for the clam chowder. The best I've seriously ever had. When one of the employees came to our table, he asked if he could take some of our dishes away, left his dirty rag and spray bottle behind, and then never came back. I waited about 10 minutes and then walked inside and asked for containers for our soup, and he handed me the kind of styrofoam containers you give someone who's taking a sandwich to go. Anyway, knowing how many other seafood restaurants there are in Astoria, we probably won't come back... but we're excited about trying the others! read more

We only tried Ron's phone chowder and the razor clam on a stick, but we enjoyed both of them. The phone chowder has bay shrimp and crab on top and was nice and chowder-y and smokey with bacon. There was a lot of seafood and the consistency of the chowder was good. Though it was slightly salty for us, this was the best clam chowder we had on the coast. The razor clam on a stick is only $5 and well worth it. The razor clam is chewy and tasty and fried nice and crispy. And, you can sit outside and enjoy a beer with a beautiful view of the bridge. read more

Having never had a razor clam, we had to take the plunge. They cleaned and fried them for us - served with a squirt of lemon. Delicious. We also had to try the salmon jerky - quite good. Even though they have a lunch menu and offer a few inside picnic tables on which to enjoy your food, the main business of the establishment is a seafood market. Everything on display looked fresh and inviting for those of us 'seafood junkies'. read more

Delicious, hearty clam chowder, their house specialty. Bought fresh, local salmon to go, too.

Great Dungeness crab, I mean really exceptional. We live near near SF, we've eaten a lot of crab. This may be the best we've ever consumed. Amazing clam chowder. The fries were, sadly, inedible and the smoked sturgeon on a stick tasted like it had been poorly handled (lots of gross commingled flavors from the refrigerator I imagine) Every ounce of crab and chowder was consumed, the fries and sturgeon ended up in the trash. That being said, we will return, just more careful Re what we order. read more

This place is AMAZING!!! I had a delicious crab melt on ciabatta, the hubs had the fish and chips and we shared a smoked salmon on a stick. Everything was crazy good but the kicker was how magical the location is. You have to wander around a sketchy parking lot past an abandoned looking building and emerge onto a gorgeous pier to find a sweet little mom and pop lunch counter/convenience store/cannery. We stayed at the Cannery Pier Hotel a short walk away. This is a no frills literally hole in the wall joint. We ordered the crab platter. A lot of food for the price. they forgot the bay shrimp on our salad but no biggie. Go early as they run out of product by the afternoon. We got the last 2 crabs and they were huge. I swear it was the sweetest crab I've ever had. The service is awesome. There are a few picnic styled tables. Please be prepared to be patient . Good fresh seafood takes time. There is also fresh packaged seafood to take home. Lastly the crab platter is large enough for 2. read more

I ordered fresh fish to go - a little hard to find but the crab was great! And the service was great too!

Let me say this. I hope this review isn't the last I leave. But it is the most recent. First visit, 5 years ago? Five solid stars. Now? Needs new management. And staff. Lots to pick from this local market. We had the local fish and chips which was cod. Had fish on a stick smoked sturgeon is the best.

We spent the day in Astoria Oregon and were told that the best chowder around is from Northwest Wild Products. Color me intrigued! We, quite frankly, haven't found a chowder we like as much as our family recipe. Until today! This chowder has fresh clams, baby shrimp, prawns and chunks of crab. Finding a treasure. It is a lovely thing. Whether it is $20 in your pocket when doing laundry or a picture of your grandma in an old purse, finding a treasure is a good thing. We were headed down the coast from Raymond, WA to Portland, OR and decided to look up a place to eat. We chose this place because the bulk of the reviews were good. It's behind a building, tucked away...in a nondescript hole in the wall. Exactly where a hidden treasure should be. We went seafood crazy. We started with the clam chowder. Oh sweet mother of clam. The broth was rich and smoky, large clam pieces, potatoes and I swear some bacon was in there. Some of the best clam chowder I've ever had. Not too rich and next to no cream. Really a signature dish. Then we had razor clams. As big as my hand, lightly fried in a breading that was crispy and slightly sweet. We baptized it with lemon. It's all it needed. The Parmesan Oysters we next. Fresh cheese, big oyster and butter. No words. Just moans and discussions of a second order. Then we did the crab. We each had a half, super meaty, already cleaned and ready to pick. Huge hunks of meat. On the plate was pickled asparagus. A simple compliment that was appreciated. There is nothing fancy about this place. It seats maybe 8? Beer available but must be drunk outside. If the weather is good- outdoor seating abounds. I wanna go back. read more

I am not vegan, but I am vegan friendly. Northwest Wild Products is definitely not vegan friendly. So vegans, close your eyes and stop reading this review now, because a bunny was harmed in its making. Northwest Wild Products is a very small purveyor of wild fish and meat. That means they buy fish from Astoria fishermen and exotic meats from specialized ranches. They operate a small store and a stand for single servings of what they sell, ready to eat. The ready to eat menu is at their store and on Sunday at the Astoria Sunday market, same, rotating menu. Do you want grilled salmon, salmon with rice and vegies, teriyaki salmon, salmon cheese melt, albacore sashimi, grilled albacore, steamed clams, mussels, barbecued oysters, Kobe, buffalo, elk or venison burgers, rattlesnake, alligator or deep fried rabbit with fries? They have a rotating selection based on what's available and fresh. This small husband and wife operation has a steady line at their Sunday market stand. The stand has electricity for a stainless steel refrigerator, some steam trays and some very large propane grills under a carport tent. I had the albacore sashimi with teriyaki for dipping, sesame seeds and wasabi, a welcome break from the usual outdoor festival and market fare. The fish were rough trimmings, not center cuts as would be found in a Japanese restaurant. At $6, a fair price, not inexpensive or expensive. I also had deep fried rabbit with fries and tartar sauce for $8. I have never had rabbit before, it really did taste like chicken, but blander. Portions are not large, don't expect full-plate gut bombs. If you visit their Sunday Market location, there are plenty options for the other courses of your meal. I think rabbit would benefit from being taken home and slowly stewed with a lot of moisture and spices, but stay away from Fatal Attraction territory, though the meal is going to be fatal for the rabbit in any case. The rabbit came with fries. They were hand cut, skin on style, good, but soggy. I rarely eat them, but I think fries suffer with all the other things keeping the kitchen busy. Nothing special about the tartar sauce. They really weren't focused on spices, understandable, with their casual market eater customer. In deep frying, marinating and a uniquely spiced batter can go a long way. They might do better with a smaller, but more rotating ready to eat menu with more focus, maybe pull in a chef as consultant. Astoria residents and visitors are very savvy eaters. So I would suggest if you are going for flavor, to take home their unique products uncooked and spend some quality recipe time with them. Northwest Wild Products harks back to the days when everyone had to hunt for food, and I'm not talking about hunting for it at the grocery store! They are a great place to put some notches in your list of unusual food items to eat, a pretty mind blowing take on market food, a good small business, and a unique food supplier. read more

Northwest Wild Products - Bunnies and more! - Seafood Markets Near Me - Astoria, Oregon

What a find! While on Seafood Hunt 2012 with The Wife for our wedding anniversary we were craving crabs and other crustaceans of deliciousness. This family owned business is tucked away into a little marina side strip mall next to the Astoria River Walk. Don't let Yelp fool you; the real address is 354 Industry St, Astoria OR. 97103. They do a little bit of everything here; while they specialize in seafood they have an extensive list of exotic meats available from animals you never knew were edible (Kangaroo, Python, Alligator Sausage). They even do a little cooking here if you want a snack, but mostly it's a seafood place. We walked in drooling as we looked to our left and saw tanks of Dungeness Crabs staring at us (well, we assume they are staring at us it's hard to tell). There are coolers of seafood to the right and ahead of you are some darn friendly people ready to satisfy your cravings (for food). We bagged three crabs for dinner that night, had a blast talking to the owners and enjoyed it when some locals came in and we got to hear the local gossip. You can stand and watch the boats in the marina while they shell your crab (if you swing that way) or marvel at the list of available products. The prices are great and The Wife and I don't think we ever had a fresher crab in our lives. The owners told us that the little buggers had just come in off the boat that day. So much for the illusion that they were caught by the Hansen Brothers onboard the Northwestern. So whatever you need, it's here, from a snack of smoked fish on a stick to a full crab dinner. From Rattlesnake to Wild Boar. From crab to tuna to sturgeon. It's all here, and you should be too. read more

A really great little chowder and fish-and-chips spot and retail shop, run by wonderful people who are proud of what they do; hard to find but worth the effort! Chowder here is spectacular: a creamy, rich bacon and potato base with thyme and onion, generous chunks of flavorful clam. Just what chowder should be, and made in small batches apparently, which means it's consistent and fresh- and the beautiful aroma of it draws you right in. Best advertisement I've ever smelled! Clam strips and razor clam "on a stick" we're perfectly cooked, crunchy outside and not rubbery. Just excellent! Oysters here are undoubtedly fresh- but they're huge, unctuous and hard to swallow for the uninitiated. Go for it if you dare! Their retail food items are wonderful and exotic, with great local specialties and local seafood highlighted. In short, if you're a foodie and a locavore, don't miss this Astoria gem! read more

I was really looking forward to have some good seafood and this place had good reviews. Such a disappointment. We had the steamers and because when we ordered they were highly recommended, we went for the big size. Ugh... tasteless. They were supposed to be steamed in garlic and wine but all I had was salty water. The fried prawns were very oily and bread was soaked in butter ( I like butter but that was too much). The clam chowder was mediocre. And no utensils for the food. read more

I came to Northwest Wild Products cause of the Phone Chowder! When I think of coastal eats, clam chowder comes to mind. With a mediocre experience with clam chowder the night before, I was excited to see the Phone Chowder on the menu. You can't go wrong with a smokey bacon chowder with chunks of clams, large chucks of crab, AND tiny shrimps on top! I mean this chowder is fully loaded with seafood - I've never seen anything like it. It was delicious, though a bit on the saltier side. With the bland chowders I've had, this one was welcomed. I would definitely recommend it, though I would skip out on the bacon and shrimp on top cause it was a bit overwhelming with everything. I found I was digging for potatoes, clams and crab meat to cut the salt! The bf ordered the tuna melt - it was smaller than expected, served on two tiny rolls! But the melt was good, also loaded with seafood/tuna and was different cause of the dill. The bf didn't prefer the chips it came with though. Nice picnic table seating with views of the marina, you can watch people come in after chartering boats for a fishing trip and the guide filleting the fish on the dock! The owner, or whoever it was that took our order, wasn't the most friendly and didn't make small talk like our experience at Hanthorn. The Hanthorn experience was definitely more unique, which made it stand out over Northwest Wild Products but this place had a larger menu and a nicer setup! read more
