Talk about feeling stupid! Here is the long story... 2 winter ago, we had a house full of guests staying for the winter holidays. Our demand for the hot water shot up significantly. On one of the trips down to the basement to bring up more supply, I noticed that there was a small pool of water by one of the 2 water heaters on the floor. We called these guys in since they have been "our plumbers" for several years and came highly recommended by our neighbors. And 1 week and $1500 later we got ourselves a new water heater. Yay! Although, I never noticed any more water on the basement floor and asked so when the crew came to install the new one. They told me some crazy "the metal contracts when water is cooled (we had turned off this heater by this time), that's why there is no water leaking". It didn't sound right at the time since Logically the hole should have gotten bigger if metal contacts. We just wanted the problem solved so we went ahead with it. We recently had the house energy audit by Mass Save. The auditor told us that the new, not the old, water heater didn't pass the backdraft test and is leaking CO Back into house. And since the other heater next to it is functioning fine. He doesn't think it's a chimney issue. Add salt to the wound is that after I researched on the Internet, I now realized the small pool of water on the floor was a normal phenomenon for the heater to relieve additional pressure under high demand. You bet we are not calling them back ever. I am now debating if I should complain to BBB and the company owner directly.

They sold their business and I am in the unfortunate position of finding a new plumber, so I called Foster Plumbing and Heating Inc. If you want to be scammed, call Eric Foster Plumbing and Heating. When I called them to make an appointment for routine maintenance of my year-and-a-half old AC, I was quoted a price of $225. Nothing was said about this being an hourly charge or about other charges. I have been having furnace and AC maintenance done for about 60 years and the charge for this work has been a flat fee. The work generally takes an hour or less. The only additional charge I have ever had o pay has been $10 for a filter if I did not supply my own. When I got a bill for $432, I was sure it was an error, so I called them to request a corrected bill. It was then that I was told that the $225 was an hourly fee. Since the technicians had not been at my home for more than an hour, the charge was still more than I had been quoted. I was then told that they had been working at my home for an hour and 15 minutes, so I was charged for an extra 15 minutes. However, Foster has a strange kind of math as they charged for a half hour for those 15 minutes. That would be $112.50 for that "extra" 15 minutes. Add to that the $94.50 which I was told covered the cost of the liquid used to clean the coils. Pretty expensive liquid, something I have never been charged for in the past!! I was also not told that there would be an additional charge when I made the appointment. I supplied my own filter. As an added "bonus", when I turned my shower on the next morning I was bombarded with ice cold water. Fortunately, I determined that the water heater temperature had been turned off by the technician and carelessly not turned back on. If it had been necessary to call Foster to solve this problem, I would have been billed another $225 or more. I am a senior citizen living on a fixed income, and I live alone. It is necessary for me to be able to hire reliable and honest workmen. Foster Plumbing and Heating certainly will not go on my list of honest and reliable workmen.

However, they are very expensive and push the boundaries of being honest and fair. We recently had a leak in our main drain pipe in the basement and called Papalia. They charge $99 for a consult, but it can be used towards repairs. They diagnosed the issue and then wrote up a proposal to fix it for $900. It sounded expensive, but we already paid the $99 and didn't want to start over again from scratch so we agreed. The plumber also misled us about how simple the fix actually was. It ended up taking him about 20 minutes to replace a 3-foot section of pipe with PVC. He also "forgot" about the $99 credit deal and tried to charge us $1000 and we had to call him on it before he would agree to honor the agreement. So they fixed the issue, the job seems to have been done well. But we way overpaid and every step of the interaction felt designed to mislead and extract as much money as possible from us. Not going to use them again in the future.

At that price, I expected preparedness and for the issue to be taken care of. When the plumber arrived, he looked at the pipe briefly and said he didn't have the required part and the supply store was already closed. No repair was started. They did not ask me to send any photos of the leaking pipe beforehand, which could have helped them come prepared. Despite this, I was asked to pay $300 for the visit. I was also told a receipt would be sent. Weeks later, I still have not received one. Charging a premium emergency rate creates a reasonable expectation of readiness and professionalism. In this case, the repair did not even get off the ground, and basic follow-through (such as providing documentation) has been lacking. The experience fell far short of what was promised.
