I discovered this little hidden spot thanks to yelp, and have seen many great reviews on it..however i was not that impressed. Coming on a Friday night might have been a bad idea, but yes it was packed. The server we had was a bit of a bitch. Kinda rude, and when i was tyring to request what i wanted it was hard to communicate with her and she wasnt really listening to what i was asking. The servers were hard to wave down to request for things. When she brought over my first dish she basically just put it on the table and walked away, and it was something i never had before so i wasnt sure if it was my dish i ordered or a free app. Since i dont eat pork, i couldnt try their infamous soup dumplings. I ordered steamed veggie dumplings. They took about 15 mins to come out, and honestly ive had better. they werent terrible..but the inside basically looked like mushy cat food. They were very filling i will give them that without a doubt. I liked the sauce they came with. I also ordered the cold Jelly fish dish. Ive never had this before and came here specifically for it. This was the dish the waitress basically put on the table without explaining what it was. It was a pretty big portion, very crunchy and sour tasting..rubbery also. I was not a fan of whatever it was soaked it...not my cup of tea i will say that. They give you free hot green tea and some peanuts...which is always nice i guess. I recently changed hand. Instead of chef from Hangzhou . It is run by a different group of people from Fu Zhou.. the food is still good. A few favorite Soo Zhou disappeared for obvious reasons. Anyway put the food is still good. In fact the pigs knuckles (yuen-te) is better than before. It has become a more of a Shanghai taste restaurant but without traditional Shanghai dishes. You really can't get homemade fresh cooked Chinese food anymore. This place is a prime example of this. The dumplings are from a bag of frozen crap we can all by a the grocery store. They are tiny, with a small amount of flavorless filling that has a low percentage of pork. The wrappers are thin and rubbery, not doughy and soft. The entrees are slathered in sugary bottled sauce. I grew up going to Hop Kee in Chinatown. This place im reminds me of childhood and it's so nice to have nearby. The friendly staff makes sure to explain each dish in detail if you need help deciding. You can see handmade dumplings being made as soon as you walk in. The soup dumplings are a MUST. We always get the shrimp chow fun and walnut shrimp. It's BYOB as well. THERE WAS AN EARRING IN MY SOUP DUMPLING ORDER! I am beyond disgusted with the carelessness and contamination in my food that I could not eat. It makes me more worried about unsanitary things that are not visible to the human eye that could potentially be in this order and my orders in the past. It would've made me sick if I found the earring mid-chew. We used the physical menus, and when we got our bill at the end we noticed that the price for every dish went up. The $2 fried dough became $3, the $8 appetizer became $10, the $20 fish became $22, and everything else increased too! We asked the people at the counter and they said that the virtual menu has the most up-to-date prices. How were we supposed to know this? And why did they hand us the outdated physical menus? They could easily edit the physical menus before handing them out to customers. We used to come here all the time but we will not be returning anymore. I've been coming here with my family for a while now. There's a crazy long selection of various authentic Chinese dishes. Parking is pretty limited and the restaurant itself is not too large, but it does have a private room available on the side! Service was speedy and the waiters are very attentive. WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD, YOU CANT FOOL ME. New wait staff and new cooks (the dishes weren't the same), this is definitely under new management. I've been coming to this restaurant for eight years. This is the first time I returned to Petite Soo Chow after their renovation. I walked into the restaurant with my husband. The first red flag was that the waiter asked if my husband was from around here. I guess the guy was trying to figure out if we were new patrons or regulars. Sorry soup dumpling lady, I like you a lot, but you did not put the same care into my soup dumplings tonight as you have done in the past. Too much ginger and all soup in the dumplings were evaporated. The young chow fried rice has different pork. Instead of the bbq pork, they replaced with with a softer pork that has way too much cinnamon. The salt and pepper pork chops came with a small bowl of salt and pepper instead of the long hot green pepper. The pork was also cut into much smaller pieces with thirty percent less portions from the original dish. I also ordered water spinach which didn't come out till after I finished my meal. We didn't even bother eating it and my husband sent it back. I'm used to the old wait staff bringing out all the items at the same time, not one by one after you finished each dish. In general (except for the soup dumplings), all portion sizes are much smaller. They can at least be honest and notify the customers of their new management. And all regular patrons of this establishment know that the old dumpling lady never got up from her dumpling corner. She just sat in her chair and kept pumping out soup dumplings with her head down. Well this new dumpling lady wasn't even sitting in her chair the whole time. She was way in front of the counter looking at the customers while talking to one of the waiters. We've been coming to the OLD Petite Soochow for way over a decade. We came here so much, all the waiters, waitresses and owner knew us by name. We always came in a large group of 10 and more and our orders were always similar - big multi course portions. Imagine the disappointment when they closed down! Then one day I passed by and saw that they were open again. We were overjoyed and planned another family gathering. That quickly dissipated as we found out that it was not the same. The workers, owner, AND food were all different. Most of the things we were used to are no longer on the menu. The taste not as good as before. The portions smaller and the prices higher. It was said that they were closed for renovations but I don't notice anything different with the decor. Whereas the previous menu TRUE Taiwanese food, this was more Americanized. It wasn't bad but definitely nowhere as good. The service was acceptable but not exceptional. They missed a couple items and brought them way late after we reminded. In all, it's OK Chinese food but not worth the long drive we come from (Orange county NY). We're back in being disappointed yet again but at least Soup Dumplings Plus is around and our other GoTo place. read more

This place is Jiangnan cuisine (where Suzhou or Soo Chow hails from as well as where Shanghainese food derives from) at its best. The flavors are bold but deftly applied by who I can only assume is an accomplished chef from the region. The restaurant may be unassuming from the outside (well, from the inside too) and shares a tiny parking lot with a ramen joint, but don't let that fool you - every dish we tried was superb and left me with a deep respect for the chef's talent. What we had: - Crab meat and pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings). These were perfectly translucent, thin skinned and juicy with triple umami of pork, crab meat and crab roe. It's rare to find this level of flavoring expertise in the states and I do declare these to be better than either of the popular joints in Flushing or any of the mainstays in NYC. Do not go here and not get this dish. - Silk gourd with enoki. The silk gourd was stir fried just right with a hint of crisp left to balance its silky soft texture. And the enoki perfectly picks up the delicious sauce that must contain some dried seafood based stock. I expected to use this dish as a palate cleanser in between other more flavorful fare but it was its own subtle yet delightful masterpiece. - Grandma's pork stew. Not sure if this was on the menu but our waitress recommended this in Chinese (外婆肉). It's a bit like red braised pork belly, a dish that is a classic in Chinese cooking featuring dark soy sauce, star anise and cinnamon to round out the flavors and this rendition executed it quite well. The pork belly used was of high quality with the texture soft along the skin and interlined fat and firm along the leaner meat but the shape, color and flavors were done just right. Bonus points for stewing some quail eggs alongside and for keeping the sauce super clean and non-greasy (an accomplishment when making this dish!) - But the highlight of this meal is the live eel (market price). It was one of only two they had available and we were fortunate enough to get one. I've had versions of this dish throughout my life from the stewed chunks to the sautéed strips with chive stems and white pepper. And while it's always been a favorite for me, I rarely order it because the eel meat is mealy and lacks its bounce in texture once it's been frozen (like most seafood). So when I heard there was live eel to be had (don't worry, they cook it so you're not eating anything raw), I knew I had to bite (see what I did there?). Boy was it worth it. I won't spoil it for you, and frankly I'm not quite sure I have the vocabulary to do this dish justice. Just ask if they have it and if they do, order it. Can't wait to return to try the dozen other things on their menu that had me intrigued. Excellent friendly service with "family owned for decades" vibes. Don't miss out. read more

My family and I have been coming to PSC for over 25 years (starting when they were located on rt 46). The food is incredible. They took a break and are now back! We came in for dinner tonight and the food is still terrific. The original owner and soup dumpling chef is still there making her famous soup dumplings. We left happy and full. Our favorites are soup dumplings, pan fried noodle, fish fillet, fried rice and snow pea tips. We will be back and definitely recommend folks to give it another try. read more

Xièxiè, God, for this place! One of my favorite places! The Pork Xaoi Long Bao (soup dumplings, dragon buns, heaven in a sack) is my addiction. They tried to make me go to rehab but I said nooo, no, no. Everything in the heavens line up to make this perfect. The skin is not too doughy or thick. The soup is plentiful and bursting with flavor. The meat is tender. The accompanying sauce heightens the experience. Some other honorable mentions are the Mapo Tofu, Salt and Pepper Pork, and Beef with Hot Peppers in Pancake Bun. The huge servings of soups served in clay pots are perfect for those frigid, winter nights. As for the service? It's a Chinese restaurant. Get over it. Last words: Authentic, great Canto cuisine on either side of the Hudson. If you want lo mein or pork fried rice, please reserve those dishes for the take-out restaurant down the street. I used to be a frequent visitor with my family back in the 90's when it was on Route 46; then it disappeared. Fast forward 10 years or so and voila! On my way to Edgewater theatres I caught a glimpse of the sign and thought "hmm that looks oddly familiar" Long story short it's the same place- same owner-same wait staff (for the most part) and the same level of delish soup dumplings! After trucking it to Joe's Shanghai in chinatown here and there it was such a relief to be able to satisfy my dumpling craving without the traffic and the added bonus of only a 10 min drive from Ft. Lee! YAY! I would reccommend of course the crab soup dumplings (pork is good too but crab is my preference); snow pea leaves i think that's what it's called in english (daio mew); sausage fried rice (sounds weird to nonasians but it's a yummy chinese sausage fried rice childhood fave); shanghai noodles are good too. It is as they say - they are there to seat you quickly, churn out food, and put you out after paying. They do get quite busy here! At one point, they ran out of cups for water... some couples near our group of four were unhappy at that (we came in just before the rush). You can watch them make the soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) behind a glass counter. There are some cold veggies up front in metal bins covered with saran wrap, and there was a customer seated there eating his fried rice... not sure I like that. Tea was slightly sweet without being over done, nicely made. We started by ordering the xiaolongbao first - do this, they take a while - one of the regular and another with the crab. The vinegar & ginger they bring out - they don't bring extra spoons with that, you'll have to ask. They were out of the chinese fried dough (twisted bread here, or you-tiao). The Chinese water spinach came out first, sauteed with garlic and a touch of rice wine at the end. Good, though definitely can tell there's either too much salt or MSG in there, and a bit oily, but not bad. Then the beef chow fun came out, and that was definitely too oily, albeit hot and tasted good. The pork ribs in a brown sauce came out after that, over shanghai tips, and they were sweet and falling off the bone, but not as authentic as my dining guests expected... ah, well. Finally, the xiaolongbao came out.. wow, they really use a lot of ginger in the meat there, it almost overpowers the taste. Juicy, not steamed on a bed of nappa leaves, but on some thin paper that they stick to a bit too much. They are very thin at the edges, and I'm impressed at that. Freshly made, indeed. Service was... well, better than I thought it'd be. While they were abrupt and fast, that's pretty much how I expected it. They did start to clear the table before we were done with our food, though they did pack up some of it. This place uses a bit too much oil and a bit too much MSG for regular visits, but it is a refreshing stop in Jersey. When you get there, you are thrown off because there's a little cafe in the front of the complex. Petite Soo Chow is in the back of the complex. For appetizers we ordered the soup dumplings. And I will go ahead and say that these are by far the best soup dumplings that I've had in NJ. Nice, soft, plump and with alot of soup coming out of the dumpling. Awesome! For entrees we got sliced beef in orange with tofu, the Dried crispy pork chops with salt & vinegar, squash with fresh mushrooms, and of course General Tso's chicken. Hey, my father's pick, don't blame me. Everything was fresh, tasty and most of all bountiful. We could not even finish all the food because there was so much. Oh, hi little hole in the wall restaurant :) This place is located randomly on a major street (maybe not so random then) and has a small parking lot that you can easily miss (Yes, I missed it) but regardless of these flaws (or mine) I would come back here over and over when I'm getting a craving for soup dumplings, sauteed watercress w/garlic, and mapo tofu. Luckily, this restaurant is 10 minutes from me so you know what that means...it's going in the "I'm taking you for granted" bin. HAHA! Right when you walk in, you'll spot an older woman hand making the dumplings on premise. Their soup dumplings have been compared to Joe's Shanghai but I've never been to Joe's so I don't knowz. My mom brought me here to have dinner for my birthday and told me that my brother and her have been going here for years. I got annoyed since they never told me about this place when I lived in town but glad she finally did. This is definitely a hidden gem. Its deep in a back parking lot off of gorge rd in cliffside pk. The menu was a bit overwhelming since there are so many choices but the dishes they were bringing out looked amazing. So we decided on the soup dumplings and spicy pork with vegetables. The quanity of food is alot and fed us perfect. I even had leftovers of the Pork. We ordered the dumpling's after seeing so many rave reviews on it and pratically everyone eating there had a order of them. Its BYOB, which is fantastic. When it gets crowded, dont be snooty cause you will definitely be seated with others. Cant wait to bring my boyfriend next time we visit with my mom. The food seems authentic.
