A balanced review, for store, pets hotel/play dates and grooming. I have a yorkie (yes, I think he is the bestest of ALL the restest) and have been going to this branch for 5 years now. So, a review: Five stars for pets hotel/play dates! My dog loves them. Tail wiggles and lots of kisses on the way there, fond farewells on the way out. I snuck in once only to see him cuddling with the caregiver during afternoon nap time. I love the attention, care and professionalism of all staff. And the few times we had to leave him at the hotel, he seemed that he didn't want to come back with us A special shoutout to Hannah, his trainer. She is his favorite human ever, and loves seeing her. Yorkies are super smart dogs, sometimes challenging to train. We started with puppy classes when he was only 5 months old with Chris (who is not there any more) and continued with Hannah. What an amazing individual! She gained his trust right away and taught us (humans) how to better communicate and work with him. When we were away, we book some one-on-one training with her too; keeping the dog both entertained and engaged is important! Three stars for grooming. I don't have a favorite groomer, but a couple of times his nails are overtrimmed and he is really scared going in there grooming salon... Three stars for the store. Nothing special. Brought my dog here - mini bernedoodle - for almost a year now and I thought they did an okay job up until this point. My dog had a full bath and haircut that was $125 (including tip) about 10 days ago and she's been having trouble eating since. I have her scheduled to go to the vet for the second time tomorrow because we just found her nail like this - full grown into her skin - and infected, which has made her sick (it was difficult to originally see because her paw fur is white). Not even the vet on our first visit noticed - but it's the groomers JOB to notice this AND cut her nails. I didn't even think this could possibly be a reason that made her sick and for the groomer to never mention this to me is insane - her nail did not grow like this in such a short period of time. I had one groomer who was very good with my toy poodle and now she's gone my pup had luxating patella. it's just a high and back end issues from time to time. now they claim they can't take her because she's disabled which is NOT the case. I have had to pay a special handling fee the tjme i have taken her. there was a lady I dealt with was nasty rude and not professional what so ever she's the one that told me. not sure the change I will never recommend this place. they switch up to often. read more

This review is for the grooming salon. I've been to other PetSmarts and have had good experiences with the grooming. I moved and this is the closest PetSmart to me. They said it would take about 3 hours, which is average time. They called me in about 2 hours saying that my dog was ready. I first noticed they didn't put a bow on her. Other PetSmarts have ALWAYS put a bow. Fine, whatever not a big deal. When they brought her out of the room they put her back on the table and started trimming. If she wasn't done WHY call me and say she was ready to be picked up. The trimming didn't take long but they should have done it all at once while they were cutting her hair before. Finally I get home to inspect and the cut looks terrible. I asked for traditional yorkie ears (cut down at the top and longer hair on the sides) and it looks like I could done a more even job than they did. read more

Needless to say, other customers have had serious issues with grooming their pets here (see countless other reviews) but my issue had more to do with racial discrimination. Their Manager Trevor refused grooming services for my dog because "there were problems" with prior bookings. When I asked what the "problems were," Trevor couldn't come up with any answer. Unfortunately I think this man seems to dislike people or color. I pried more and he mumbled something about a late cancellation.... we had to cancel because someone had a heart attack, and the other time my family member who was caring for my dog (and spoke broken English) misunderstood the booking time. When I asked Trevor to please elaborate on what the problems were, and offered to pay in advance and let him keep the money if we couldn't make it, he repeated that it was because of late cancellations and stated he would not be able to take the money. Although I explained that the person who booked it didn't speak the best English, and on on another occasion had an actual heart attack, he didn't care. To the owners of Petsmart Cambridge: it is appalling that you would employ a Manager who refuses to make any help or accommodation for an innocent mistake that was made due to a language barrier, and a missed appointment due to a heart attack. I understand that your groomers get paid on commission, but sometimes life happens. Please consider hiring someone with tact and who cares about problem solving for customers. It's easy to prioritize the profit margin, but decisions like hiring this gentleman will inevitably have consequences. Trevor: it is unfortunate, shameful and disgusting that you REFUSED SERVICE TO A BROWN WOMAN because of a mistake she made due to a language barrier. Our money is just as good as any of your white customers. Finally, the most applied thing is that we had purchased a grooming package for the dog and not only did they refuse to service us, but the manager hung up on me and refused to refund me, which is illegal per Massachusetts consumer protection laws. Went in for a cat grooming. I have a long-haired cat who had matting and was looking for a clean shave. I asked if I should stay in the area, they told me it would take 2-3 hours, so I went home. As soon as I got home, I got a call that I needed to come back and pick up my cat because she wasn't cooperating. What kind of groomer doesn't anticipate a cat to retaliate? They also don't do sedation which doesn't help at all. While she was there, they were able shave her entire back. She looks completely botched and has mats of hair hanging off of her. My fiance and I left our 7 month old puppy at the pet hotel from 6/16/22 until 6/21/22. When we picked him up today, his coat reeked of urine and his butt was crusted over with poop. We had to pick the crusted poop from his butt only to find a red rash on his bum. We gave him his bath and he still smells of urine. The bag of puppy food that we left them was full before we dropped him off and almost 3/4 empty when we picked him up. This means that they overfed him which probably led to diarrhea, which explains why he was covered with poop. Needless to say, we were upset and heartbroken that our fur baby returned to us in this condition. The fact that he reeked of urine meant that he was likely sleeping in it, which means they didn't even bother to clean his crate. The fact that his butt was crusted over with poop (with a rash underneath) means that they didn't care to wipe his bum after he had diarrhea. This is neglect. Even more concerning was the response I got from the store manager. She apologized for what happened to our puppy, but didn't seem too concerned. She said that they do their best to wipe the dogs down. She asked me "what are you looking for?" when I let her know that my puppy was neglected. I let her know that I would like some sort of investigation into what happened these past five days. I was hoping she would be eager to look into it to correct the issues so it wouldn't happen to another puppy. The sense I got was that this is the standard of care at their hotel. She offered to leave a message with the hotel manager, which I accepted. This kind of care is not professional and unacceptable. Whether they need more staff or professionally trained staff, is up to them to figure out. I absolutely will never bring my puppy to that hotel ever again. read more

My dog had grooming at this place and it was a very disappointing experience. They only spent two hours when it would normally take 4 hours to groom my other dog in another place. My dog came out all puffy and brushed up and didn't seem like she was trimmed at all except for shaved areas on her legs where the groomer she had mats. She didn't even try to even out or even blend in the hair. My dog looked horrible. She did not also smell like she had a bath. I paid extra $12 for teeth cleaning and when I asked the groomer how the teeth cleaning went, she said she only put toothpaste in the mouth because that will disintegrate the plaque. Omg. Really? I paid extra just for her to apply toothpaste in the mouth when I could've done that myself. Terrible. I wrote this review after the grooming and magically it disappeared. The store manager wrote me an email and apologized and offered for a full refund and free touch up and so I replied to the email to thank him and said I would take up his offer for the refund and touch up. Can you believe he never replied again? So this manager even lied about the offer. It was really infuriating. I booked 7 nights for my dog at the Cambridge Petsmart PetHotel weeks in advance. They cancelled my reservation with WELL UNDER 24 hours' notice, at almost 5 pm the day before I was supposed to drop my dog off at 10 am. I had to cancel my flights and rebook my entire trip because it was not possible to find another boarding spot open for my dog with - and I stress - zero business days' notice. The reason that they cancelled the reservation was that my dog has a mild exercise restriction for health reasons, which they said they could not accommodate. I had been very clear with them from the get-go about this condition, and the store employee I booked the reservation with said it would be no problem, as long I paid extra for the "individual" play time. Sure, alright. I also got a letter from my vet clearing him to stay at a normal, non-medical boarding facility just to be safe, and sent that to the store manager. I understand that a large company like Petsmart may not be able to accommodate dogs with any medical needs, even if the need is only "just let him stay in his kennel during group play time." I understand there are liability issues, and that some things slip during the holiday season. If they had just told me from the start they couldn't take him, I would have been fine with that. If they had booked him and then a manager realized shortly after that a vet's signature wouldn't be good enough, I would have understood. My issue is that they booked him with enthusiastic assurances that all would be fine, wasted several weeks, took the vet paperwork I sent them, and then called at 5 PM THE DAY BEFORE MY FLIGHT to cancel the entire reservation with no other option (a waiver, a conversation with the vet, hell, even some kind of token store credit as an apology) offered. I will not book another boarding reservation here again even when my dog is fully healthy. If the system is this disorganized in terms of approving reservations and then revoking them with so little notice, I frankly wouldn't trust them to be sufficiently responsible to care for my dog either. And I'm not risking canceling another trip home to see family just because they couldn't honor a boarding reservation, either. For Pete's sake, I should have just hired a dogsitter for less than half the money. read more

I had a phenomenal experience with the grooming services at this Petsmart. I dropped off my puppy (4 mo.) for the second grooming appointment in his life. I could tell immediately that they cared for my lil guy, gave him treats, and helped him stay calm. They finished up the bath and trim service in a very reasonable amount of time, and Eleanor the groomer gave him a marvelous cut. I seriously didn't know my mini schnauzer could look as suave as he did when I picked him up. After coming home, he doesn't have any nicks or scratches, his nails and paws are beautiful, and he bounced back to his usual self very quickly. So, my favorite groomer, Tonisha, left the shop recently. I loved her, she did a great job, and most importantly my pooch loved her! When she left, she called to let me know she was leaving since I was one of her regulars. She gave me 2 names of groomers she knew were good with poodles. I went with David, and he was great, too. Sad to lose Tonisha, because she and the doggo have a special bond, but David was great with him and he still looks amazing. Most (not all, but the vast majority) of my experiences there have been stellar. The online store is priced lower, but that doesn't seem unreasonable to me, since it costs more to run and staff a store front. If I know exactly what I need, I buy online and pickup in store for the discount. If I need to checkout multiple products before buying, I pay the in store price. That feels fair. read more

I recently went in for a trim and bath for my dog. As a result, my dog was given a bath great and nails clipped, but one paw her nails aren't even and the two front claws are still a bit long. Her paws weren't trimmed as I was hoping for. Lastly, I thought the anal glands were included, but apparently they werent because my dogs rear is reeking. I have learned my lesson and will never go back again. I forgot to mention they have grooming curbside drop off and pick up, but when I called they wanted me to go in. Service here isn't pleasant. The groomers have a bit of an attitude problem. It's a pretty penny for this service I barely gotten. My services for dog grooming will be going to somewhere else. read more

Discriminates against dogs with any vague appearance of 'bully breed.' As our primary doggy day care/boarding center was booked for labor day weekend, we signed our 2-year old boxer/boston terrier mix up for doggy day camp/boarding. He is a loveable small/medium sized dog who wants to be friends with everybody (and is a regular at a great doggy day care center in Boston). When dropping him off, the manager stopped the associate ringing me up, noted it looked like he had some 'bully breed' so he would not be allowed to play with the other dogs (and would not even look at his official adoption paper work, dog license, and medical records stating his official breed). As it was right before leaving on a trip, we had no other options. The policy is not highly visible or prominent when booking a stay for doggie day camp. He is a fairly high energy and social dog who needs activity and attention. He came back much more anxious than usual (or after staying at our main boarding center where he is allowed to socialize with other dogs). We will never be bringing our dog back here. No one with a dog that is a bully breed or has the vaguest look of a bully breed (this includes 'mini dogs like Boston terriers or french bull dogs). Dropped off an adorable pup for a bath and trim this morning. Just picked up my unrecognizable babe- his facial fur was essentially shaved all off and so was his backside in an uneven manner. Really, really hope it grows back quickly. I MAY use the store again for products, but may not, we have a closer pet supply store to home. She said that they will wash my chihuahua for 2 hours it's too long for grooming chihuahua, because everything what I needed it wash my dog, dry her, trim her nails and clean her teeth and ears! Do not take your elderly dog here. We've been to this location several times before and had a good experience. We have an old dog with hip arthritis, so he's slow when walking around, but he still goes on 45 min walks, kicks up dirt, dances around when being fed, etc. This weekend, something happened while he was being groomed. He now has a severe limp and doesn't want to walk. The groomer said he fell in the shower and asked that we not bring him back because their facility can't give him the care and attention he needs. I agree! But so far every other groomer has been able to, so we will definitely be going elsewhere after he heals. I don't know what it is about PetSmart that they can't handle a gentle older dog, but please do not take your dog there. read more

I had very bad experience with the grooming service today. I was informed that they were only be able to trim my dog's back nails, not front. It was very shocking as my dog has been in this particular PETSMART grooming place for nail trimming for 3+ years since he was a puppy. When I confronted this issue inside the grooming room, it turns out a new girl there who trimmed the nails for my dog today. First she said: "oh, it would be your dog is not familiar with this location." == I was like, why you are so confident that it is my dog's problem, not yours? and why you do not bother to check the transaction history to see how many times my dog was here for the nail trimming. But whatever, it is not important. It is important we make sure my dog finishes his nail trimming == that is what I paid for! So I suggested that we would like to make another appointment to finish my dog's nail trimming. During the appointment making, she then commented: "oh, we must make sure 2 ppl there for this dog's nail trimming; oh, the appointment only will be kept for you for 15 mins if you are late..." Finally I said: " this is a bit mean. I guess I will make the appointment later". I really cannot image how she mis-treated my dog during today's nail trimming process. Must be painful. I wish my dog can speak and tell me his experience. And theoretically the employees at Petsmart shall at least love the pets. It is so said that there is such employee blames everything to the pets and try to harsh on the pet owners to ensure that both pets and pet owners have a very unforgivable experience. This is a review for their training classes. My dog, Daisy, just finished 6 weeks of beginner classes. She learned so many new things! She loved going to class each week because she got to eat all kinds of yummy treats (dried liver!). In fact, she peed on the floor with excitement each time we went. Yup, we were those embarrassed dog parents who had to ask kindly if someone could come by with a mop because those puppy clean up paper towels were not enough for the puddle of pee on the floor. Sorry, I didn't mean for this review to be about my dog's bladder. Lindsay is fantastic. Her methods, using the clicker, embraced positive reinforcement. I felt like a proud mama watching my dog in class. We happily signed up for intermediate. PET GROOMING NIGHTMARE This PetSmart started charging $8 handling fee for my 15 year old, 5 pound dog. Then, the manager told us that its policy that the dog must stand up during the grooming and since our older small dog couldn't stand the whole time, were told to find another groomer. No dog, older, paralyzed or special needs should be turned away nor should the owner have to pay a handling fee. I do not understand how this happened so I wanted to voice my frustration. Just wrong. Made the mistake of taking my long-haired cat here. He is a 7 month old kitten and our first time with the grooming experience. They gave me a list of things they would do during the grooming process: bath, nail trim, shave, dry etc. and that it would take 2-3 hours. Within 10 minutes of my leaving I got a call saying the cat is not cooperating! I mean, even I knew having been through zero grooming experience that it unlikely he would last that long with loud, large dogs being groomed in the same room, how exactly did the groomers not anticipate this??! They charged $15 for nail clipping which is all he managed to get done in those 10 minutes, but once I got home I realized that even all the nails had not been trimmed fully! They obviously ignored that detail when charging. Absolutely rubbish experience. If they don't know how to manage cats, they should say it upfront instead of making one go all they way and then deal with aftermath. read more

Took my dog here to get groomed because our usual spot was booked up. The place smells bad, strike one. His cut was so uneven,strike 2. And he was bleeding when we picked him up. They knicked him in 4 different spots, strike 3. But they blamed it on him and charged us extra, strike 4. My dog is a rescue from an abusive situation, and yes he can get a little squirmy but no groomer has ever had a problem with him. Or if there was a problem, no one has ever treated us so horribly and unprofessionally as to blame him and charge extra for a botched job. He gets groomed regularly because of his breed. The manager of the pet hotel (didn't get her name but a middle aged white woman) was extremely rude to me when I dropped off my dogs for the doggie day camp and pet hotel. Gave me a terrible attitude for no reason when I provided her with my dogs' vaccination records. She claimed the records had to be signed by a vet and when I pointed out the vet signatures, she tried to condescend to me by claiming they weren't signatures but just some unreadable scribbles. She only ended up accepting them when I emailed over the invoices from the vet visits from when my dogs got vaccinated. Then her attitude completely changed and she started acting half-decent once she knew they were vaccinated and she didn't have an actual reason to deny me and my dogs service. I didn't even want to leave my dogs there at that point but was desperate as I was moving into an apartment that day and had no one to watch them. Will absolutely never take my dogs back again. Like Petco, this store is near a Boston MBTA subway station (Red Line Alewife stop) which makes it much more convenient to get to. The policy on replacing or returning dead fish is less strict than Petco - in fact, they are quite magnanimous and put the customer first in this category of activity, and the store has many useful products for fish care. I would rate PetSmart as perfect... anything else you need you can get from other local aquarium stores and online but aside from finding bio additives like Dr. Tim's One-and-Only (see http://store.drtimsaquatics.com/ ) you don't need much else outside of this store... this store is great to visit regularly and the fish sales are great. See my photos for a good look at the store. A few important pet fish issues: I recommend the bristlenose pleco instead of the ordinary pleco, which grows huge and stops eating algae when it is larger. The chinese algae eater grows big and aggressive and it is better to get a siamese algae eater or flying fox. The tiger oscar is a nice fish but will be territorial and will attack/chase other fish. The rosy red minnows (cheap feeder fish) are also not very good pets and will be territorial in a tank. You can own multiple (2-6) female betta fish in the same tank... they may chase each other a little but they tend to co-exist, just don't have more than one male in the same tank. In addition to the siamese algae eater and flying fox some great algae eating fish are the farlowella/twig catfish and the American flagfish. Be sure to go to Big Fish Little Fish near Porter Square, Cambridge to find some of these fish for sale. read more

PET GROOMING: This review is specifically for pet grooming. As far as the store is concerned, it is fine. It is reasonably clean, has inventory and you check out in a reasonable amount of time. I will give them 4 stars for their "store." As for pet grooming. We brought our puppy in for his first grooming which was a "puppy cut." Firstly, they were priced extremely well at $20 while all other groomers we called were $60+. So from a pricing standpoint they could not be beat. That being the case, I guess you get what you pay for. When dropping him off our expectations were that he was going to get the following; a bath, eye trim, anal trim, paw trim, nails clipped, and anal sacs expressed. When we got him back he had a complete bowl cut over his eyes. Granted, I will admit we did not know what to expect so would not have known to say we were not crazy about that look. My complaints are less about what they did do (as we do not know what to expect) and more about what they clearly did not do. He was dragging his butt immediately after which tells me his anal sacs were not expressed. I will leave a small amount of "benefit of doubt" as he may have been itching a bit since the area was trimmed. Ok fine. The major thing was that his nails were 100% not trimmed and this was my GF's number one thing. She even brought it up when we dropped him off. His nails were just as sharp with no sign of clipping. We had to do this after. Additionally, his paws were also not trimmed at all. He still had tons of hair sticking through which we had to do once he was home. If nothing else, I guess the $20 was worth it for a good bath and lessons learned. That being the case, we could easily do what they did. We will not be back. read more
