I live near this hardware store and am there often. The people are always nice and helpful but today the team went above and beyond. I had a kid's grocery cart toy that required some tricky screws, washers, etc. and I brought it to Petworth Ace for help. I worked with MIKE and CHRIS and they were absolutely AMAZING!! They spent a lot of time and effort finding the right parts and making sure it got fixed correctly. They were incredibly kind, patient and determined. I truly appreciate all they did to help me today and they are excellent employees of a truly great and valuable local store. We are very lucky to have them in the neighborhood. Annie's is an incredible addition, and asset, to the neighborhood. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. But watch out if you are waited on by Annie, the owner. She's probably the nicest and most concerned store-owner in the entire zip code, and you can tell she really likes what she does and her ability to provide this service to her customers. They also have a decent selection of pet items if you need close and need something in a jam. Don't expect the selection from a 20,000 sq ft big box store but I would be hard up on leaving there without something similar to what I went in to find. unless it was something incredibly specific. I make it a point to give my business to her store and it's a whole lot better than dealing with the Spartanly-stocked hardware stores hiding around Georgia Ave and 14th St, and definitely an upgrade from driving to the Home Depot near the NY metro station. My neighborhood hardware store! Friendly staff and decent selection of stock for those days when you don't feel like putting up with the vastness that is Home Depot. From drill bits to mason jars to light bulbs, we've had pretty good luck finding what we need in a pinch. Only con, the store is slightly more expensive than its larger competitors/Amazon but if you have questions, it's worth it to get that personable, thorough answer. I have never had such a good experience at a hardware store. I was looking to pick out some paint for my dining room, and for a variety of reasons was having trouble landing on one. The woman working in the paint section was SO helpful talking to me about the different brands, different types or paint and of course the colors. She brought over a paper with the different kinds of wood trip for me to hold up against the different paint samples and talked to me about the number of drops of blue and black in a paint to give me a sense of how neutral the gray would be. Basically I had no idea it was possible for someone to help you pick a paint color, but it turns out it is. I love the paint color and am going to drive across town back to Annies specifically because I was so pleased with the service there before. Found Annie's as I had some home projects I had to do around the house and wanted to avoid home depot like the plague. The customer service, the selection, and the location were all what I needed. As soon as you walk in someone is typcially there to greet you and ask to assist you. They will point you in the direction where the appropriate isle is or assist you personally. And so far everyone on staff has been helpful and courteous. The selection of hardward and tools may not be as large as a home depot or lowes, but for the most part they have it on hand or can order what you are looking for. And if it is in stock I have found the prices are competetive if not better. The location is great, on a off street without a parking lot maze littered with people and congested with traffic. My love for Annie's is partly based on my hatred for Home Depot, but it's still sincere. Annie's is the opposite of Home Depot in every way. It's a locally owned neighborhood treasure full of helpful employees. Everyone who works there seems like they have a lifetime of experience as handymen. The jacks-of-all-trades who work there are able to answer all my in-depth, rapid fire questions about how to frame a room, how to install drywall and electric outlets, etc. etc. You name it, and someone there is a pro. A few days ago we had an issue with the paint they mixed us and we went back in and they refunded us and made it right. When my old grill from Sear's finally wore out, I first went to a big box store to see what was out there. (What's a guy in August going to eat in DC if he can't grill a steak?) I ended up buying the grill I wanted at the same price from Annie's, without the hassle and with a prompt (and personalized!) delivery. I'm really pleased with the cover I bought with the grill too, because the one from Sears wore out, and that accelerated the grill's corrosion. I've been using Annie's for small purchases such as paint and gardening needs ever since they opened. When they don't have something I need, such as a particular kind of doorknob, they are able to get it really quickly, and the friendly staff always helps me find the right item. Annie's is my local go-to hardware store. I discovered it about a year after moving to Petworth. I can't believe I went that whole year without it! I clearly do not know how to use Google Maps ... or the internet. Here are some of my things about Annie's: Favorite thing #1: The location. They're conveniently located to my apartment and because they're not on a super busy road there is always available parking. They're only a few blocks away from the Petworth metro station, and a block from a major bus route (70/79). Favorite thing #2: Their dedication to the community. Annie's sponsors and participates in a ton of local Petworth arts and volunteer events. In the warmer months they allow The Bike House to host weekend bike tune-ups in their parking lot. And they always remember locals! The last time I was there I met Annie. She helped me find paint. I was a little neighborhood star struck (weird, I know), but it was great to see that she engages with customers just as her staff would. Favorite thing #3: The staff. Everyone is always very helpful and friendly, and if they don't know the answer to your question / needs they'll help find an answer. They're also honest, which I appreciate. If they think another product can do the job well, even if they don't have it in stock, they're upfront about it. I trust that they'll be honest with me. Not-so-favorite thing: The selection. Annie's is only a fraction of the size of Home Depot, so there's no way they can have everything you'll need every time. There have been a few instances where they haven't had what I needed, so I'd have to go to Home Depot. But, I'd say in about half of those instances Home Depot didn't have what I needed either! If Annie's doesn't have something in stock, they're always happy to order it for you, which I appreciate. read more

This store is a real godsend. Before Annie's, there was no place for those quick home repairs and maintenance items. Toilet valve broke this past week. Took the part to Annie's. Guy at the register saw what I had in my hand, "follow me", and I walked out of the store four minutes later with a new boxed valve. Guys at the register even had me laughing as I walked out the door. That's a good hardware store. Sure, I paid a 10%-20% premium on stuff, but I get what I need the first time, and I get it quick, so it's worth it. That's a good hardware store. Will be making many return trips. Very busy on the weekends. For good service, go on a weekday and save yourself some hassle. read more

Unfortunately many of the employees know very little about anything hardware related, anything diy related, and basic terminology on tools and products etc. and cannot answer questions about products, accessories, and/or procedures. I ended up using YouTube, google, and knowledgeable people who work in a trade for advice on what exactly I need to buy for a project. Help your employees learn! Teach them about all your products and the basics of tools, trade work, etc.! The trades are a dying but necessary field! read more

So thrilled to have this addition in the neighborhood!!! We needed it and I'm so excited not to have to drive up to Takoma or down to RI when I need something quick. I've only been twice but both times they had what I needed. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I love the small neighborhood touches, too--DC flag onesies? yes please! And I love that they're dog friendly!!! :) My one real concern is that once the evil, big, bad chain store opens, Annie's will suffer. :-/ I really hope not because it's a wonderful asset to the neighborhood. read more

Love having a neighborhood hardware store with the selection of an Ace chain. They won't have the selection that the big boxes do but that's almost a benefit. What is there is a thoughtful collection of great regular stock and interesting and useful seasonal stuff. I've bought paint there, a lawn mower, a garbage disposal, lots of misc hardware and so much garden stuff. The staff is super friendly and know their products and seem to enjoy making recommendations. One illustration - when I was going to buy plumbers putty I asked someone at the door who said, oh, yeah, aisle 14. I headed that way and heard her call for someone to meet me there to help. I arrived there just as someone met me at the start of the aisle and without a word on my part pointed at the putty, looked at me and said, "yes, that's what you want right there." I had a fantastic experience with Annie's today. First, I called to ask about something I really wasn't sure they had, and the man I spoke with on the phone individually checked and found that they had it (brass rods) in stock. Then, when I came over to the store, I ended up speaking to another staff person who wasn't sure about the item, but quickly recruited the rest of the team and they helped me find it. Unfortunately, the rods weren't thin enough for the project that I was trying to do, so I found the other items that I was looking for and was going to purchase them when a staffperson who had helped me asked if the rods were good. I explained my issue, and they successfully pointed me towards an alternative solution that fit my needs. Throughout, they were very friendly and approachable and I will definitely use this store for my hardware needs going forward. read more

(yes, I had a receipt and produced it) Might I remind you that, to meet your return requirement, I would have had to return the merchandise during the height of the spring outbreak of the pandemic when businesses were not taking merchandise back. I also agree with a few other patrons, other times it's hard to find some help and the person at the checkout couldn't really care less about what I'm up to or helping me out. OMG I previously loved this hardware store. My previous review was 5 stars but I understand that ownership has changed here and it shows. Being immunocompromised, I decided to call to ask if they had what I needed before I came out. And on two different occasions I called the store and both times the conversations were very short and they were extremely rude. Yesterday I called and asked if they had black mulch. Before I could finish a man said "Ma'am, I don't know we're out of a lot of stuff." I then asked if he could check and before I could finish my sentence he sighed and said hold on and put me on hold. When he came back he said yes we have black mulch. I let him know that I wanted to ask if he had 20 bags and he said Ma'am as if he was annoyed and I just said that's ok and hung up. I sent my sister the store to see if they had 20 bags of mulch. She called and said they have it. She then asked me if I really want to spend my money here, and I asked her why? She then said that she waited at the register while employees walked past her and when someone did help her she asked for the 20 bags of mulch. They told her that she would have to put the bags in the car herself because no one could assist her. I told her to leave and head over to Annie's Ace hardware in Brookland where she received the customer service we are accustomed to. I'm not sure if they now provide poor customer service or if we are just accustomed to the exceptional customer service that Annie's always provided us.
