This hardware store is amazing and a local gem. It's really everything you could want in terms of supply, service, location, and hours. The world would be a better place with more stores like this. They carry literally everything. I've never gone in and not been able to find what I was looking for. I've gotten Christmas lights, CO2 canisters, propane tanks, obscure screws, odd-sized Allen wrenches, trash bins, rope, chain, fasteners, and a lot of other things. Every time, somebody has been able to point me in the right direction and helpfully answer my questions. Things are a little crowed, but that's what you need to fit everything you actually want in the space and it's all meticulously organized and people can always point you to what you need immediately. read more

A local, independently owned hardware store (unclear to me if TrueValue is simply the franchise name) - convenient to the surrounding neighborhood and nice if you'd like a personal touch and/or don't feel like hitting one of the larger and impersonal big home improvement chains. But tradeoff is that it's smaller so less choices and not necessarily the most cost-effective. Like having them here though. read more

This is a great hardware store! I came in here today to get a couple of parts for a broken toilet (a tank ball and a flush lever). First thing I noticed was how friendly the staff is. The fellow behind the counter was courteous and was kind enough to point me toward the toilet parts without acting like I was interrupting his day. Their parts selection wasn't gigantic, but they had what was necessary. Obviously if you want the finest flush levers and tank balls you might wanna go to Home Depot or Lowes, but for those of us who just need something to make crap go down the drain, this'll do. Checkout was quick, and the guy told me that their return policy is basically "just bring it back." Considering that I actually bought the wrong tank ball (I needed a flapper valve instead), that's a good thing! Overall I quite like this hardware store and I'd definitely come back. read more

Sadly, it is NOT SAFE to go into Glen Echo Hardware. After SEVEN MONTHS of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Billy the cashier still refuses to wear a mask. He still has a mask around his neck or pulled down so it doesn't cover his nose. This is a small store with poor air circulation. I will drive the extra mile and go to Strolsneider's on Arlington Road in Bethesda where the employees wear masks and practice social distancing. read more

This review is written in the time of coronovirus. I can certainly forgive the high prices charged for the difficult to find items that Glen Echo Hardware stocks. What I cannot forgive is that there is no attempt to regulate the number of people flooding the store, and no requirement to make customers wear masks in this tiny space. After months of confinement, I came face-to-face with people without masks who were practicing zero distancing. This is not a store that behaves like a good neighbor, and I will never shop there again...ever! Compare to Takoma Park Ace Hardware where there was a door monitor keeping a orderly spaced line outside; EVERYONE wore masks, and they had prompt and courteous curb-side pick up. read more

It is rare that you can go to a hardware store, ask for what you want and have knowledgeable people get it for you, or ask for advice and get a response that is informed, reasoned, and backed with experience. This place, though, is the real deal. I have always gone out of my way to get to this store, and never regretted it. It is also a good source for high quality specialty paint, such as the Fine Paints of Europe products, for special applications. I just used their satin oil paint from that brand on some kitchen cabinets, following the advice I got from Glen Echo ' s paint desk, and the finish came out beautiful and even buttery. Every neighborhood used to have a little hardware store and now there are only a lucky handful. Lucky us who can run up to pick up the right size screws, lights, plumbing, painting, etc. supplies for those little projects. And big projects, as I see the trades in there all the time. The friendly staff is a necessity as so much stuff in crammed into this little store that I is a bit tricky finding where what you want might be, but it will be found. OK, it is not as cheap as Lowes, but the folks are helpful and it is handy. They are a True Value store and have their specials. But nothing tells you that winter is coming better than seeing their stack of snow shovels out front. read more

When I (a white woman) go into this hardware store, everyone is incredibly helpful and friendly. Great little neighborhood shop. However, when my husband (who has brown skin) goes in, it's a completely different story. He is treated very rudely and swears he will never go back. Has happened more than once with multiple employees. Seems like they have a race problem. Needless to say we will not be patronizing Glen Echo Hardware anymore. Too bad b/c they are close to home. I bought a pack of ice melt before the big snowstorm hit our area. It is a 20 pound bag for $13.99 + tax, very very expensive. This must be a last minute deal so they can sell whatever price they want. My husband also bought 2 50-pound bags (much cheaper) so we have too many bags. 10 days later I tried to return this bag, the person behind the counter said I cannot return it because they had a sign by the counter which said "ice melts, shovels...etc. are seasonal items and cannot be returned", This is ridiculous because it is only early February and it is still winter season. I'm not trying to return it in spring or summer. Too bad they won't have me as a customer any more. read more

I really like this store. I drive all the way from Silver Spring to this store because they are more than just a retail store. The Staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable (at least in what relates to painting). Most of the time Matt is the associate who helps me. I always go with tons of questions to him and all of them get answered. So far all his recommendations have worked so well for me and my house. Thank God for Matt and Glen Echo! You make my life easier compared to the nightmare that is to get an answer at Home Depot. read more
