I was on a weeklong odyssey to get keys cut. Other hardware stores, ace or otherwise, either refused to cut my difficult key or couldn't make a copy that would work. "Slim" here made a working copy which then could be copied again, some of which worked. I don't know why this key was so meddlesome but the employees here took on a difficult task and helped me out until it was complete. Customer service is what makes a hardware store, so I can confidently say, having been to about a dozen of them over the last 13 years, this is the best in the area. read more

One thing that I have been doing as of late is little repairs here and there and becoming more proactive with my house plants and "Ace is the place." I live closer to the Annie's Ace in Petworth but I prefer the small town feel of Takoma Park. Plus I know that the staff is just as knowledgeable and that the residential parking is easier than the tiny parking lot in front of Annie's. The past two visits meant that everyone formed a line in front of the store and as customers exit, new ones enter. According to a sign posted in front, customers are encouraged to keep their time inside the store to 15 minutes which I believe is enough time to get what you need in addition to some things that catch your eye; air plants, Blues cd's or a bamboo spatula. After everything is done and you're ready to check out, you can sign up for a reward's card really quickly and be on your way. read more

If it was possible to leave ZERO STARS, I would. I was just charged $34 dollars for disposable gloves. And when I went back to return these ridiculously over priced gloves (within 10 minutes of buying them!) I was told they were an emergency supply and they were unable to return the unopened product! Prices are a slight bit more expensive than the larger home improvement stores, but for the convenience and smaller lines it may be worth the extra buck. Parking may be a little tricky depending on what time of day you visit and if they are getting their weekly deliveries, but there is parking in the lot behind Suntrust Bank which gives you the 1st hour free. read more

This is an absolutely delightful hardware store and I'm so glad to have them here in downtown TKP! Like the other reviewer for Ace (Geo N.), I also felt like I was cheating on Strosnider's in Silver Spring, but it was worth it. They have a bit of everything here and will rid you of the unpleasant chore of dealing with Home Depot for anything but very large items and major building supplies. I really, really hate the local Home Depot, so please patronize Ace with me! The staff really are helpful and attentive, so you'll never be left wandering or lost. If your items are heavy they'll carry them to your car, whether you're parked right out front or over in that lot behind the post office. If you need something they don't carry, let them know and there is a good chance they'll have it in stock soon - like my lamp oil. My husband and I just moved to the Takoma neighborhood from California, and we just purchased our first house. As first-time homeowners, we are learning just how much we don't know about hardware, paint, and essential homeowner tasks. So imagine our happiness when we discovered this store. We have been there four times in four days, and we will be back again! The staff is extremely helpful. One guy explained how to use a drywall anchor and made sure we had the right one. One gal gave me a tour of the paint department, but she stopped me from buying any paint that day. Why? Because the next day was free paint day, and she wanted to make sure I took advantage of it! I did, and was so pleased that they privilege customer service over making a quick sale. This past week, we have been to Home Depot, another hardware place in Takoma, and Ace for various household essentials. This Ace location is the only place we've been to multiple times, and the only place we plan on returning to. The staff alone makes this store shine. read more

I see that others have already noted the most obvious feature of this hardware store: helpful staff. I would find the staff overbearing at many other stores, but at a hardware store, I usually need the help. They pack a lot of selection and inventory into a small space, so finding things can be difficult without help, which is another reason it's good to have the helpful staff. I normally have a good experience at Ace. Today, not so much. While I'm being helped by an employee in one narrow aisle, another employee sweeps the dust and dirt towards the end of the aisle where I am (of all the aisles in the store) , asks me to move, then comes down another aisle towards me, leaving all the junk where I'm standing. Then I ask for help finding something to anchor a painting in plaster. The employee starts asking me about drywall. I ask for help from someone else. A second guy pulls some stuff out of a drawer and tells me to tell the cashier it's 20 cents and then walks off to help someone else. He comes back, and I ask him how it works/how I'm supposed to use it, and he says, "You don't even know that?" I head to the front and ask to speak to the supervisor. Turns out it's the drywall guy who tells me they aren't professionals and don't know everything people think they do and maybe I misunderstood. read more

Since I moved back to Takoma, I have frequented ACE at least 7 times in the span of two weeks. You can't really put a value on a hardware store that is walking distance from your house, has better customer service than the big box chains, and also carries candy you haven't seen since your childhood in the 70's. Their prices might be a bit higher than Lowe's or Home Depot, but I use them anyway for the majority of my purchases in the hardware area. The place is stocked to the gills with everything - in a maze of rows and shelves. I wouldn't be surprised if a minotaur is living somewhere in the back. However, I do know if he is he is likely wearing an ACE vest and will be more than happy to show me to whatever section I need. read more

I will never ever work at any Ace Hardware Store again. My experience working at the Takoma Park location was terrible. There was no staff training by the manager and I was expected to know tasks of the job that I was not familiar with. There was very little communication from the manager and other employees. I realize that this is a very laid back store to work at but the level of unprofessionalism was something I was not use to in the workplace. I realize there are things one must learn when starting a new job but in order to serve customers and be helpful there should have been proper training by the personnel in charge. They always have what I need, even though it's a small store. The employees are always quick, friendly, and knowledgeable. If one employee doesn't know the answer you need, they'll find someone else who has experience with your situation. No shoulder shrugging or telling me they can't help. GREAT service every time. I also won't go anywhere else for key cutting now. I repeatedly had problems with keys from a big box hardware store, no matter the location I went to. The keys I got at this Ace Hardware turn so smoothly that you'd never know they were a copy instead of an original. I don't know how they manage to do a better job, since the machine seems to do the work, but they are far superior keys at the same price. There's a parking lot with another entrance around the back, don't be fooled into paying for parking in the couple spots in front. read more

With all their tools and one of a kind gadgets I am always amazed by what they carry. From Dichotomous (sp) Earth to pink night light bulbs. Okay, I typically wouldn't review a hardware store because... 1.) I avoid having to go to a hardware store, I usually convince the fiance to do it. 2.) I'm a food reviewing kinda person. However, I got my nails done next door one day, and needed to pick up a lock for storage so I ran in real quick. Immediately, I was greeted by more than 3 different people. The employee behind the counter saw the lost and hesitant look on my face upon walking in, and asked immediately how she could help. I let her know I needed a lock, and another employee walked me to the section I needed to be in. The employee even talked me through the different locks. Yes, we are talking about just locks. And they were so accommodating and helpful. I went back up to the counter, made the purchase and had trouble getting my card out of my phone wallet. The employee was kind enough to help me. The entire process was painless. This is exactly what good customer service should be. They were on point, from the moment I walked towards the door. I was even greeted outside before going in. The prices are reasonable for a brick and mortar store. The store is definitely a lot bigger than it seems from the outside. A true "neighbohood" store. Oh, and my fiance came in one evening and they let her bring our pup in. They even offered her a biscuit treat! read more

Still looking out for Tim "The Toolman" Taylor everytime I go. This isn't Home Depot or Lowes. It's not huge with gigantic yards for lumber and building material. If you need that stuff, go to HD or Lowes. What this place IS, however, is perfect for the neighborhood homeowner to come find exactly what he needs in a short amount of time. What sets this place apart from the big stores is the service. Within 30 seconds of walking in there, I guarantee that someone will ask you if they can help you find something. If I didn't mosey around and look at all the stuff I wanted to buy but shouldn't, I could probably be in and out in 5 minutes every time. The staff asks because they care. Love having this place in the 'hood. The people who work here are friendly and helpful. Prices are not bad and there's a good selection for a smallish store. Love the new gardening section around the back. Also nice that they have my replacement carbonators for my sodastream machine. I also have an avid hatred for the home depot, so I'd knock any store up a point for not being them. But Ace is exactly what home depot is not, a store where the employees know the selection and actually care enough to point you to the right product. read more

Every visit to this store reinforces the "feels like a small town" vibe that Takoma Park creates. Of course, I've never actually lived in an actual small town, but have been to several with people for whom "antique" is a verb...so, grains of salt, and all that. The service is friendly and sincerely helpful. The variety of items, for the store's size, is excellent. The location and parking, given the small lots in the area, are convenient, and allow the backing up of one's ride right up to the loading area where the more bulky items (mulch, soil, gravel, other rocky things) are sold. It's always a pleasure going here; I have gotten to the point of using Home Depot and Lowes only for ordering things online, or on the rare occasions when I need something that Ace does not have. read more

Love the staff and the selection of non-typical hardware store items. Canning supplies, small appliances, quality paint. Usually prices are fair, sometimes great, occasionally over the top. Went in with my dog and picked up what is usually a 2 dollar dog treat. No price. Got to checkout and it was 10 dollars. So enjoy, but watch out for the occasional zinger. Popped in to grab a few tools, because aparently I am completely unable to keep track of where I place my Phillips head whenever I move - as many screwdrivers as I've had addresses, and then some. It is a solid local hardware shop, with most everything that you would need to keep your apartment or home in order, without having to grab some really nice power tools. Everything was well organized and easy to find, and while a little pricey, I felt it was fair. The staff here is super helpful - like crazy helpful. Follow you around and ask a lot of questions helpful. Depending on when your mood, that can be good or bad. No wants a bunch of smiley faces asking inane questions when you are hungover and just need to buy some fucking Sheetrock nails. But, it certainly does help when you are in a good mood, and people really should be nicer these days, right? Recommend, will be back. read more

The customer service here is consistently bad. No one is helpful or nice at all. Furthermore, they very seldom have everything that I need. I stopped going there several months ago but was forced to go back during social distancing as they were one of few places open. I was reminded why I stop going there. I have recently and unfortunately opted for amazon instead of going there. I really want this place to improve since it is a valuable addition to the community it serves. read more
